JASMINE’S JUICE featuring JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE, DJ IRONIK’S BIRTHDAY PARTY and BBC WORLD TOP MUSIC TOURS DEBATE.

JASMINE WITH JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE.
A busy week preparing a lecture that we are holding at the BFI (British Film Institute) on the South Bank about filmmaking, and then off to the RTS (Royal Television Society) monthly committee meeting which is brilliant fun to banter about media and broadcast with my peers. If any of you young newbies to the TV world are looking to get in or up the ladder in television there’s nothing I recommend more than joining the RTS-its free- and their regular sessions at least once a month after working hours at all the big TV broadcasters help you go from runner to TV superstar very quickly. take a look at the site here and get involved-I’d love to meet as many of you here as possible!
http://www.rtsfutures.org.uk/
My highlight of the week had to be catching up with the delectable Justin Timberlake! I cant tell you how amazing this young man is musically. A true musician that has an impressive history of R&B knowledge all up in his head. Justin was always a pleasure to work with at both MTV and Channel 4 and has always been the most well mannered young superstar. Even at the height of his fame he has been the most well mannered, welcoming, friendly act. This month he’s back with new music and like the classic melody maker he is-the track SUIT and Tie’ is classoic Justin. a great hook uninfluenced the the modern day hype of dubstep or dance music. Justin is a strong believer in the classic soul music he’s grown up on and revealed that his new music is simply great material that he had been inspired to make after ticking many other boxes in his life. The music drew him back, the time was right and with love and melodic hooks in his heart he’s back! The rest of the album is exactly what fans of smooth R&B have been craving for so long. Could this be a wave turning back in favour of mainstream soul? I hope so!

JASMINE WITH DJ IRONIK!
Next it was off to DJ Ironik’s birthday party which was hosted by Lil Chris from Towie and also DJs Scottie B and DJ Woody from Choice FM.. As a testament to just how popular Ironik is in the industry, as well as his mum and family all being there other acts like Chipmunk, Russell Kane, Derry from X Factor’s The Risk and lots more.. And it was amazing seeing real party DJ’S like Scottie and Woody-who really always drive crowds into a frenzy whether at carnival, Ibiza, Aiya Napa or a house party-they truly know how to make a party rock. We partied till we dropped LOL. When I mentioned to Ironik that I wouldn’t be staying all night as I felt slightly older than his crowd he laughed and told me ‘’ Jas-don’t be silly my mums here-you’re NEVER too old!’’

Then it was off to borderline to watch PJ Morton at his showcase, (more on that young man next week).
After those I rushed off for an appearance on BBC WORLD TV where I was talking about the top 10 live music tour list from the past 12 months that saw Madonna lead the top 3 (at $296million!) that also included Bruce Springsteen and Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters. The youngest act in the top 10 at number 4 was Coldplay.
In comparison, teen sensation Justin Bieber, who played a 35-show tour, failed to crack the top 20, taking in $40.2 million, at No. 23.
This led the BBC to question ‘’if pop music is a young persons game how come the top 10 live music earners are over 40?’’ Well let me break it down for you dear readers.
The main thing here is the longevity of the pop star. The more years they’ve been around the more experienced they are so their shows are brilliant. Older bands know how to create a stadium experience.
For big established older acts that do a much shorter run of shows for much higher ticket prices, their costs for catering/ live musicians, roadies, security is much smaller.
Barbara Streisand, Madonna and the Stones tickets often start at 500 pounds. Younger acts like Rihanna’s start at 27 pounds. Rihanna has to do a lot more work to try and equal her elders.
She might get the daily column inches, which of course lead to chart hits as young people run and buy her material but ultimately she’s more famous than she is rich. So there isn’t always a correlation between chart hits and real money made by the music act.
The bigger acts like Madonna and Rolling Stones will perform at massive venues for a shorter period as opposed to Rihanna who will do numerous numbers of night after night at the 02.
Older acts have fans that have been loyal to them for years and they continue to pick up new fans from younger generations.
Older music fans and audience’s have a much higher disposable income so the older music starts can charge big bucks knowing that their fans are more organised, will book tickets early and pay whatever they are charged. When you are an older act your key appeal is to have an audience with a more disposable income- when you charge £200-£1000 per ticket you knock out the younger fans that don’t have the money. Younger audiences want cheaper tickets for a much more tangible experience.
So is there a difference between who tops the charts and who has the most successful tour?
Not really, anyone these days can have a number one hit with a song that comes from nowhere. See Psy last year. A great act will have a reputation for delivering a great live show.
A one hit wonder can even have a great one off show, (see Bobby Valentino, Sunshine Anderson, Tierra Marie etc a few years back), but the biggest tour earner will always be someone more established that can command cash.
The band the Black Keys tend not to have chart hits but have successful tour after tour, Pop acts don’t have that experience.
The figures are staggering, what percentage of those ticket sales do you think the artist gets to keep?
Every single show is different. It depends on the promoter. Pop stars are guaranteed their fee, it’s the promoter who either makes above the odds or loses money.
Some acts will demand 100/200, 000-million per show, but then an act like Mariah or Beyonce can charge anything for a private show and both have been rumoured to have received up to 4 million for one night for a private show, so it really depends on each individual deal.
You may notice that most major music acts these days tour alongside promoters like Live Nation who pay over the odds for the artist so they squash their competition and other promoters. They might not make loads of cash but they get the kudos for being the staple, trustworthy promoter.
Which countries are these acts touring, are they going to established countries or are they trying to break into new markets? Have any of them ventured into territory where they haven’t been before?
Honestly nowadays acts will go wherever pays them…they have their set territories that work for them, but then once in a while a promoter in Timbuktoo or Turkey offers a big pay check for a gig so they’ll go. The artist doesn’t ever take the risk, the promoter does…
So when you next see your average UK pop star in the tabloids day after day don’t assume they’re wealthy-their record label is-they’re most likely not. Hopefully you can now understand why the older music acts that have been around since the 80’s and 90’s aren’t past it- they’re rolling in it!
The only unfortunate thing about my whole appearance on BBC WORLD was that just before I was seated in the hot seat I had been told I had at least 10 more minutes before I was on air, so I moisturized my hands having just come in from the cold. Suddenly 30 seconds later, I was dragged onset and the presenter Peter Dobbie immediately reached out to shake my hand with a smile. I automatically clutched his with my hand all moist and creamy!. I saw him inwardly squirm and wipe his hand as discreetly as he could on his chair. How embarrassing! I didn’t even have a second before we went live to explain it was cream not sweat. So my apologies Peter- I’m really not a sweaty Betty!

JASMINE’S JUICE FEATURING GEORGE THE POET AT THE ROYAL ALBERT HALL!

JASMINE WITH A JUBILANT GEORGE THE POET AND A PROUD WRETCH32 AT THE ROYAL ALBERT HALL!
Last week I had the honour of witnessing something refreshingly new, unique and positive in the UK music industry.
I get invited to showcases that are promoting new acts all the time. Much of the time it’s a struggle to even reply to every invitation so similar are all the artists’ looks and sounds. People see Beyonce and Jay Z and try to emulate them. We don’t need a cheap version of a great act that we already have.
This is why anything that’s sent with a personalised invitation and great manners that intrigues is a winner. I wasn’t the only one that thought so as on my arrival at the Royal Albert Hall’s very private rooftop live music room-the Elgar room- was heaving with every table full of playlist heads, A&R teams, print press journalists, bloggers, radio heads and more. The buzz was quiet but strong.
It helped that the invitation had promised ‘’ Wretch and Zeon have asked to extend a personal invitation for you to join us for the George The Poet’s headline show in the Elgar Room at the Royal Albert Hall, January 14th 2013.George sold out the event in less than 24 hours and with that we anticipate this being an amazing night. Also to add to this special evening Jacob Banks will be the supporting act. It would be amazing if you are able to make it down to be a part of a landmark moment for the young man.’’

They weren’t lying. It was certainly a landmark moment. The grand venue is special. It can’t just house any old random newcomer. You need to be as dynamic as your surroundings. Everyone was on time, seated, drinks on table and there was a great vibe of anticipation in the room. The room is a large square with a wide stage, which comfortable houses a complete live band and a patent blood red grand piano. This means every audience member has a great view of the act. Around the room are huge arty black and white prints of classic acts like James Brown and Little Richard. It’s a nicer version of Camden’s Jazz Café.

1Xtra DJ Vis introduced the night and brought on opening act Jacob banks who started with a cover of the all time classic ‘Let’s get it on’. Even though it’s hard to judge talent when they perform cover songs-he owned it in his own very relaxed style.
Jacob looked like a classic model dressed all in black everything trousers, shirt, coat and acoustic guitar. He performed 3 more songs for an enraptured audience; “Simone”, “Coward” and “Something beautiful”. Jacob has strong wispy yet soft vocals. Very reminiscent of lighthouse family lead singer Tunde Baiyewu / and soul singer Lyndon David hall RIP. He sang his whole set with his eyes closed. Shy or caught up in the moment? No one cared. He was hypnotic.
Jacob won the Adidas competition to work with Plan B back in 2011 as part of their ‘ALL IN’ campaign and I could see from the sports brands table that they were very proud and delighted seeing Jacob on stage and appreciating that he is in the great hands of manager Zeon Richards under the Renowned Collective. Adidas might be a humungous global brand but don’t sleep on the breaks they’ve given new, disadvantaged up and coming talent in the UK over the past few years, in the worlds of sport, music, comedy and more.

In the audience and up on their feet the crowd included eighties singer Gabrielle (Dreams can come true), the Adidas team Paola, Akua, Aisha, music producer Naughty Boy (Chip. Wiley, Emile Sandi), former Radio1Xtra head Ray Paul, Radio1Xtra playlist head lady Laura Lukanz, Girls Aloud member Nicola Roberts, Radio 1 broadcaster Nihal, Tinie Tempah, Richard Antwi-director of Levels Entertainment, George the poets parents, friends and family.

After a very brief break for a drink, Vis introduced North London’s finest Wretch32 who is from the same music stable as Jacob and George (XYZee Ltd/ Renowned Collective) . Wretch bounded onto stage wearing a sharp black suit and welcomed us as he explained why George the poet had his total support ‘’ when I saw George perform I was immediately a fan of his work’’. Later George and Wretch’s manager Zeon told me that he literally had to hunt George down after seeing him perform. Apparently he asked him to call him numerous times but never heard back from George. Zeon finally got through to George via Georges girlfriend. Perhaps its cos George is in his final year of his politics degree…at Cambridge and therefore otherwise distracted!

When George finally took to the stage he was immediately engaging dressed to resemble a young Malcolm X wearing thick-rimmed black specs, a black suit, white shirt and maroon tie.
The show started with a solo George introducing a young, male, black character called ‘’Malik’’ whose story he would tell us throughout his set.
His set began in total silence, and then eventually a lone violin, then a piano, then a guitar, then his opening act Jacob helped him sing hooks and finally a small choir of singers scattered throughout the audience. George would build his narrative up into a crescendo where the audience were literally hanging off his every word and then bring us to a climax with a clever line or observation (“A man either kills or destroys- don’t be Scarface-he kills his boys”) and we would applaud or cheer.
You would think after every part of the story the set was over such was the audience applause, but then George would gently start to speak again and the lighting would change colour for each act and we would be back on his journey with him again.
Make no mistake; this was no ordinary spoken word poetry show at all. Onstage behind George were 6 huge video set lights and a bank of video shoot strip lights. They looked dramatic. Like a hip hop video visual. It was clever juxtaposing simple word with modern day visuals.
The performance was of a real ghetto story of struggle and strife and family breakdowns in a poem called “Malik”. A story that millions of young disadvantaged men of colour across the globe can relate to. It’s your fathers, brothers, son’s story. It’s clever.
A true theatrical spoken word experience that kept us engaged, it felt like a new artistic modern genre.
I could see it as a regular theatre tour across the country, but also as a 1 hour TV special on Channel 4 or MTV.
A friend that was my plus one who hadn’t originally wanted to come as ‘’spoken word isn’t really my thing’’, was visibly moved and impressed and couldn’t stop gushing about how inspired she was. George will have this effect on you all. I guarantee it.

JASMINE’S BIRTHDAY KARAOKE 2013!

JASMINE’S BIRTHDAY KARAOKE. Friends including MOBO CEO Kanya King, Trident Police’ Claudia Webbe, PR MAVEN Jessica Huie, music scene photographer to the stars Paul H, actress/singer Preeya Kalidas, record label boys JP and Trenton and more.
Every year the pressure heightens to outdo my last birthday adventures. You know I lived the YOLO brand way before Drake had teenage northern kids yelling about it in Magaluf!
Previous years have seen me celebrate many of my born days in new york, los Angeles, on a boat, in a plane, having my notorious underwear and pyjama parties in the 90’s, to Motown themed and old skool hip-hop themed parties, to dinner in the private dining rooms at The Ivy and Chiswick House in most recent years. My birthdays actually in January but many think its in February, April or may as I always have a smaller gathering of close friends in January and then another big party later in the year. Why not? I take my cue from her majesty the queen who has a public and private birthday. It’s a great way to extend your celebration for 6 months of the year.

JASMINE WITH HER GIRLS L-R, MARCIA, MONIQUE, ANNELIESE, ANITA, HEATHER AND CLARE.

This year I couldn’t bear the thought of yet more food and dinner after so many holiday seasonal dinners at Christmas, which was just a fortnight ago so I decided we needed to do something different. I told my nearest and dearest to come and join me for a karaoke evening at Bloomsbury bowl where we had the private jumbo-sized room to ourselves.
The dress code was black and white for artistic reasons. The night began at the nice and early time of 6pm. with so many friends in the music industry-many of them DJ’s- one has to often juggle times so everyone can be included. By 6.30pm the room was already half full and both ChoiceFMs best DJ- Manny Norte (rocking a black and white Ali tee) and actress/singer Preeya Kalidas (rolling in a Russian glam hat!) were rocking the mic to our delight!

JASMINE GETS SINGING LESSONS FROM ACTRESS/SINGER PREEYA KALIDAS
My mate Oliver made a very handsome Frank Sinatra and as he chose great track after track we got into our best musical theatre vibe.
Manny also played conductor and mystro as we did our best renditions of john Travolta and Olivia Newton John in ‘’Summer loving’’ (at that point al the Bloomsbury Bowl customers crowded at the see through glass window to peer at us do our thing so loud were we!)
Everyone got all church and gospel when ‘Like a prayer’’ was on, and then a little x rated when Biggie Smalls remix of Nasty Girl cam on. (These music industry folk can be just as vulgar and outrageous as the acts they represent!)
There were only 2 mics but that didn’t stop all of us just joining in and singing along to every song that played. My girl friends Monique and Heather were wilding out to everything! New Scotland Yard’s Trident Police’s Claudia Webbe was brilliant dueting with Preeya on Lauryn Hills killing me softly. Preeya’s dulcet tones were singing away whilst Claudia did the straight mic man ad libs-it was hilarious! Preeya ‘’ Strumming my pain with his fingers’’, Claudia ‘’yes his fingers!’’ MOBO CEO Kanya King looked gorgeous in her movie star black frock and hair did! She was shy about taking the mic but you know me, I thrust it at her so we all had a great trio going in Salt and Pepa’s ‘push it’.

JASMINE WITH THE BBC’S JAY DAVIDSON AND MOBO’S KANYA KING

All the guys had fun with the rap songs especially Jay Z and Kanye’s verses. Photographer to the UK music world Paul H and Manny Norte did a great set of very manly hip-hop tracks; they also rode madness ‘’Baggy Trousers’’ word for word. Former MC now music manager JP was under pressure but did Jigga more than enough justice, Someone mentioned that they ‘’rode that track like Dizzee and Wiley’’ at which there was much hilarity!
Legendary cookie crewmember Cookie had us rocking as did PR glam chic Jessica Huie. BBC marketing maven Jay Davidson was jumping around to cypress hills jump around. My mate Marcia looks the spitting image of a young Whitney Houston so of course she belted out Whitney classics (see if you can spot her in the group photo!), whilst her husband Fabien came in black and white chef garms so we referred to him as Raekwon the Chef all night.
Amy Winehouse management team member Trenton did Amy proud with his rendition of her classic hits (even though he did have to look at the words- why weren’t they imprinted on his brain already? LOL). My oldest best mate Anita who’s known me since I was a cocky, prissy 10 year old princess did her best to keep me in non tipsy order, my old ballet school pal Clare knocked out a few old skool dace moves. My close friend, new Yorker, former Def Jam, V2 Music, music manager Anneliese screamed her lungs out on Estelle’s American boy-it’s the American in her.
Then Marvin Gayes sexual healing took the party in another direction as my homie Troy broke into a duet with Jay-wild!
There was a particularly poignant moment near the end. My surrogate big brother Richard Pascoe was in hospital but he has never missed any of my birthdays in the past 2 decades. My other half dialled him up on facetime on his IPad screen, and there from his bed was Richie wearing a black and white outfit, eating chicken and red velvet cake and singing along with us. The whole room then broke into Queens Bohemian Rhapsody in his honour as we all screamed our lungs out.

TALENT MANAGER RICHIE PASCOE JOING THE PARTY VIA FACETIME FROM HIS HOSPITAL BED WEARING THE REQUIRED BLACK AND WHITE AND SINGING ALONGSIDE US!
A great moment. A great night. A great set of people!

JASMINE’S JUICE featuring festive fun, PIERS MORGAN, CHRIS BROWN and KANYE WEST!

JASMINE WITH HER MENTOR PIERS MORGAN
Happy New Year! I hope yours was as fun and relaxing as mine which mostly consisted of cosy, frolic filled moments with family and friends. A lot of board games like Taboo were played, a lot of screaming went down for Connect 4, a lot of hearts were beating hard after Wii dance offs to the Michael Jackson Experience and too much weight was gained eating copious amounts of rich food!. Time to feel guilty and hit the gym before that summer bikini has to make its debut!

I was also lucky enough to go to the Christmas carol service at St Paul’s cathedral. There’s nowhere more festive and Christmasy to hear the choir sing whilst sipping peppermint hotchocolates and eggnog lattes. On new years day we watched London’s New Years Day parade where competing drum line bands from America and dance troupes from the UK performed impressive numbers in the freezing January cold in skimpy costumes whilst we were wrapped up in our snug hats, scarves and fur mittens.

Throughout the festive activities it was important to keep my eyes open to the realness out there too and nothing could’ve been realer than the stories that kept hitting us from across the globe. Firstly the horrific tragedy in the USA where a mentally affected young man shot and killed so many school children and teachers. The same day we heard about the China tragedy where a similar incident with a man stabbing young children shocked the world but at least in the Chinese tragedy the children were still alive!. One of my mentors, the often loved but mostly hated broadcaster Piers Morgan, who has gone from a newspaper pop culture columnist, to the editor of a UK newspaper to now hosting his own TV show on American network CNN, was very vocal about Americas gun laws pleading with the public to make a change.

Americans have embraced their right to protect themselves and ownership of guns is so important to them. They state things like ‘’guns don’t kill people, people do!’’ Now I know the worldwide stereotype of many Americans is a lack of brain cells and tunnel vision but even a nursery schoolkid knows that only people with guns can shoot other people. Americans started a petition to deport Piers Morgan home. They don’t like us Brits (who are supposed to pander to their every thought), to challenge them on anything. Piers might irritate and be very in your face but he’s real. He speaks like your mate down at the pub, not a puppet puled by establishment strings. We have loaned him to the yanks-I hope they can be open minded enough to hear that he speaks the world’s thoughts on the gun issue. Slavery was once seen as a right to this nation too. No one ever thought we’d see a black president either. It’s never to late to change.

I was reminded of our own issues here when I attended a theatre play called the forty elephants, which I’d heard great things about all through the autumn months. A thought provoking stage play, by new writers & directors Nadine Woodley & Dani Moseley on the hidden, yet rising issue of girlgangs in London.

Think about the word ‘gang’. What image comes into your mind? A group of young urban black males is probably the first thing that pops up. This type of gang would be described as vicious, threatening and brutal; but would you use these same descriptions for a girl gang? Or do you see them as a milder version that commit petty crimes and just seen as girlfriends of the male gangs? I do not recall hearing anything on the news about girl gangs – and why is that? Maybe the media don’t see girl gangs as a threat to society and perhaps the public wouldn’t even be alarmed by them. Nonetheless, after seeing Forty Elephants, I have been more informed on a culture that was unknown to me.

Crude dialogues and monologues with vulgar gestures and expressions shocked the audience to realise that this is how girl gangs would behave. A normal group of female friends have been transformed into a jealously driven clan of girls who strive to gain power and money amongst the male dominated street culture. Even though it sounds like a play that does not seem to be humorous, it was impossible to keep a straight face throughout. The girls mocked how immature and juvenile boys acted around girls and showed the boys who ‘run tings’, whilst even scaring the boys at most times. They laughed at the cruel and meaningless attacks they committed, and then bragged about them at the feasts at the chicken shop they would have after their fights with rivals. Girls carrying knives was another shocker to the audience. Young boys would be constantly ‘stopped and searched’ by police, but girls would never be suspected of carrying dangerous possessions.

Although their casual conversations about their fearful day-to-day acts seemed like fun to the girls, there was obviously a reason that made them turn out like this. Issues such as troubled family problems, wanting to be taken seriously by men, following the crowd and peer pressure are just a few reasons to why the girls believe what they do is right. Being a part of the ‘Forty Elephants’ meant to them a sense of togetherness and security for each one of them. But they didn’t foresee, inevitably, that all would turn sour amongst the gang.

The actresses Nadine Woodley and Dani Moseley wrote and directed Forty Elephants wishing to show an eye opener to the increasing underground culture that we should fear. Afterseeing this play I questioned, how many people have been attacked by a girlgang? And how many males have been attacked by a girl gang but could not admit so, only to protect their masculinity? There are numerous programmes and courses to keep young boys off the streets, but what is there encouraging girls to do the same?

They have truly highlighted the struggles that some young girls face in life; not in a degrading way, but in a way that motivates the audience to make a change. If you get a chance to see this play do so. The writers have used art to portray life in a way that really hones why we must protect and nurture our young ladies who see the Rihanna’s and Kim’s of the world as their role models.

JASMINE WITH CHRIS BROWN

Rihanna and Kim Kardashian have probably had the most global column inches this past 12 months and no doubt will continue to make them in 2013. Their respective drama’s around domestic abuse and home made sex video tapes haven’t set them up in the best possible light, but like I said above –its never too late to change. They’ve made their marks and are now independent women. Rihanna’s has shown forgiveness and Kim has matured into a very able businesswoman. Being partners to famous females like Riri and Kim isn’t easy. When I recently caught up with Chris his attitude was that he has repented and will live his life as best he can but can’t be a slave to the publics opinions.

JASMINE WITH KANYE
On his visit to London last week Kanye told me he can’t wait to be a father. I applaud Chris Brown and Kanye West on coming through their respective issues in the past to stand strong by their ladies. I congratulate them all on their success. May 2013 be even greater for them all.

JASMINE’S JUICE featuring DAVID GUETTA, WILL I AM, IDRIS ELBA, ADAM DEACON, COLIN SALMON, JOCELYN BROWN, Spirit Of London Awards and more!

JASMINE WITH BRITISH OLYMPIAN WEIGHT LIFTER ZOE SMITH AT THE SOLA AWARDS!
Its Christmas week and no doubt by now most of us are sick of the endless rounds of office and social parties and just want to tuck into that big Christmas dinner! I have already had 6 consecutive Christmas dinners in a row so I’m already sick of it. Why do restaurants do this-save it for the 25th!

DAVID GUETTA, IDRIS ELBA AND WILL AT WILL’S LATEST BRAND MONEY MAKING PARTY FOR HIS IPHONE5 PICTURE TAKING GADGET APP.

FUN WITH THE BOYS AT WILL’S PARTY!

It’s been all GO, GO, GO for me with one event after another! I’ve been singing Kanye/ Jay Z’s ‘’on to the next one…’’ over and over in my head whilst rushing from one venue to another and slipping from one frock to another….from Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park, to attending St Pauls cathedral for Christmas carol services, to record label Christmas parties, to Will I Am’s latest party-he definitely takes the crown from Puffy as liking any excuse to get with a brand and throw a party!

JASMINE WITH BBC LONDON’S TOP BROADCASTER EDDIER NESTOR FOR THE MEDIA DEBATE AT BBC BROADCASTING HOUSE.

I began the week hosting a breakfast debate for Media Trust at BBC NEW BROADCASTING HOUSE for a very select group of media editors (BBC, ITV, ITN, THE VOICE, local press), journalists, London funders and organisations (Amy Winehouse foundation, Isis young offenders prison, transport for all, blind sport, Lambeth dads and many more) . The debate was chaired by the ever-articulate broadcaster Eddie Nestor who proved why he’s the best thing on BBC RADIO LONDON. Like a true verbal choreographer he ran the debate better than Dimbleby on Question Time asking all the right questions, goading and cajoling where needed and controlling the conversation if it got too heated. A great moment in an amazing new building (that’s open to the public from April next year!).

JASMINE WITH ACTOR/DIRECTOR ADAM DEACON AND THE WINNERS OF THE SOMEWHERE_TO BRAZIL FILM COMPETITION AT THE BRAZILIAN EMBASSY

ADAM WITH THE SOMEWHERE_TO WINNERS AND YOUNG PEOPLE AT THE BRAZILAN EMBASSY

Next I attended the very opulent Brazilian embassy on the strand where youth organisations Livity and Somewhere_to were holding their Christmas party and screening a short film directed by Adam Deacon. Adam had chosen some winners from a competition for Somewhere_to, to direct a video in Rio, Brazil for the group. The evening highlighted that as well as carnival dancers, lovely vibes and of course loads of lush nibbles and plonk.

JASMINE WITH HER LADIES TALK TEAM AND ACTING LEGEND COLIN SALMON!

JASMINE WITH THE LADIES TALK TEAM AND SOUL LEGEND JOCELYN BROWN.

Midweek it was off to the Battersea studios to record our weekly show for LADIES TALK (SKY 218) where this week we had the acting legend Colin Salmon and soul legend Jocelyn Brown (somebody else’s guy) join us on the panel. Both were hilarious fun for the Christmas special and revealed some great anecdotes! Make sure you catch it.

JASMINE WITH A COUPLE OF THE MCFLY BOYS ON THE RED CARPET AT THE SOLA AWARDS-02 ARENA
Then it was off to the 02 Arena in Greenwich for this years Spirit of London Awards which is one of my favourite events of the year. Last years was held at the Royal Albert Hall and was an amazing evening of celebrating young peoples amazing achievements in front of an audience of celebs from many walks of life. This year I felt the show lacked the spark of last years. The 02 was too large a venue and not all seats were sold. It felt flatter than previous shows even though they had a brilliant all star line up. As well as that, this year the young winners weren’t allowed to make an acceptance speech due to time constraints, which was a pity as it lacked the ‘ahhh’ factor that last years ceremony had. we wanted to hear from the kids-that’s the main focus right!?
Having said that, the night was still lots of fun with a cold, yet busy outdoor red carpet where we caught up with presenters like Noisettes and Olympian Zoe Smith, as well as performers like Angel, Labyinth and McFly. (Special shout out to Zoe and McFly who spent ages waiting on the freezing red carpet with the LONDON360 team to feed to a live BBC broadcast- true professionals!) During the show we heard wonderful, many unbelievable stories about the young people across the country doing amazing things for their communities as well as mind blowing personal achievements. an evening that left us secure in the knowledge that contrary to belief the youth of the UK are great and doing things that we should all be really very proud of!

JASMINE WITH BOXER DAVID HAYE

Other people that I want to commend from the scene that have really made their mark this year despite obstacles are boxer David Haye, east London duo Rudimental and west London’s Rita Ora.
David had some controversy over the Derek Chisora drama but made it back into everyone’s hearts by showing just what a lovely guy he is on I’m a Celebrity. I know he will achieve his ambition of making it in the acting world too- he’s a grafter.

JASMINE WITH 2012’S BIGGEST LONDON SUCCESS STORY-MS RITA ORA!
Rita Ora needs a special salute. I remember her grafting all the way back in 2007 many years ago when she duetted with Craig David on the single ‘’Where’s your love’’. Since then she’s had her ups and downs. She managed to get Jay Z to sign her to the Roc, and believe you me; life on a label that big is not easy. Competing with stable mates like Rihanna and dealing with press intrusion at the level at which she did this past month with the Rob Kardashian drama takes balls. She has remained sophisticated and quiet on the controversy front and I really believe that she’s put West London on the map in a great way! She really is really one to watch for 2013 alongside east London duo Rudimental.
They currently have a track which features Angel Haze called Hell Could Freeze. Their Feel The Love is a monster SMASH anthem, certified platinum in the UK and is one of the biggest selling records of 2012. The track is also platinum in New Zealand and Australia. I think the number 1 they already have under their belt is testament to the fact that things can only get bigger for them in 2013…. they even squeeze in time to mentor young people…now that’s good karma.
I hope you’ve all balanced out your good karma for the year, its never too late. Apologize to someone if you need to, remind someone else that you love him or her. Invite in a lonely person for a hot drink. Happy holidays to you all! Tomorrow is never guaranteed so live life hard!

JASMINE’S JUICE featuring RUDIMENTAL. DIANE ABBOTT ON LADIES TALK AND THE UK YOUTH PARLIAMENT!

JASMINE WITH MP DIANE ABBOTT!
Started the week at the sold out Rudimental gig at Hackneys Chats Palace. The Venue is a beautiful old Victorian churchy looking building which was full of a really young crowd of fans gagging to see their hero’s-the duo that are Rudimental.
Rudimental’s band and vocalists were really on point, particular salute to the red haired female vocalist, who was feeling it and letting out some passionate tones. The band had so much energy onstage that the crowd couldn’t help bouncing up and down all night too. This band is SO good when in a full live show. That’s what people should see otherwise folk have them down as a drum n bass outfit when they are more of a band, more musical than that. They all play instruments and they are at the core of this ‘thing’ which includes session singers, vocalists, trumpeters, drummers etc etc. definitely a great act to see if you want to dance hard and leave the venue having taken part in a very energetic interactive gig!

JASMINE WITH THE LADIES TALK TV CAST AND MP DIANE ABBOTT!

Next it was time to record the Ladies Talk weekly TV panel show (SKY 218), which has been swimming with celebs this fortnight! On last weeks show we had actor David Harwood MBE on and this week its Colin Salmon! My recent favourite has got to be MP Diane Abbott though-she was SO ENTERTAINING and real!
Diane is the first black woman to be elected to the House of Commons. In 2010, she became Shadow Public Health Minister after unsuccessfully standing for election as leader of the Labour Party. That’s how big her balls are-she stood for leader of the labour party!
I have to confess I wasn’t that bothered either way when I first heard she was our guest a few weeks back. I’ve seen her on various TV shows over the years. Thought she didn’t really engage with me and was like most politicians a little out of touch.
Could I have been more wrong!? On the show she was dynamic, intriguing and hilarious with her fast wit and anecdotes and kept it very real when discussing her personal life, controversy in her 25 years career and more. She certainly proof of the black doesn’t crack theory; she’s 59 yet still looks 40 at the most! she dropped a few patois slanguage phrases into the interview as well as sharp funny responses to questions and was really very intriguing as a person. Can you imagine the struggles she’s had to go through to get this far? And she’s probably revealed none of the real controversy to date. Surely there’s a great book waiting to be written here?

JASMINE PREPARES FOR THE UK YOUTH PARLIAMENT IN THE HOUSE OF COMMONS GREAT HALL.
From one generation of politicians to another I then popped my formal attire on to brave the cold corridors of Parliament and the House of Commons where I accompanied the LONDON360 reporters and young people from all across the UK gathered for the UK Youth Parliament annual meeting.
Youth from all across the country had voted on 5 areas that they think are most important for their parliament to focus on for the next year. This day in the chambers was for all to debate for and against each motion and choose a winning campaign that would be the focused on priority for all youth in the near future.
The 5 topics which had been voted in were; Make public transport cheaper, better and accessible for all’, ‘Getting ready for work’, ‘Marriage for all’, ‘An equal national minimum wage for all’, and ‘A curriculum to prepare us for life’.
The day began in the great hall where teas, coffees and pastries were provided. I don’t know why but of all of us picking pastries the waiter leans over to me and says loudly ‘’its only one each ma’am!’’

JASMINE IS WARNED ITS ”ONLY ONE PASTRY EACH!”

It was fascinating to see so many young, politically engaged, ridiculously articulate people gathered eager to take on the days topics and I noted that these youth would be running our country one day. The biggest thing that impressed me was that unlike generations ago where politicians were of a certain sex, class and background-usually male, white and Oxbridge educated, this gathering had youth from absolutely every possible background regardless of sex, class and background and it was refreshing!
I spoke to a young lady representing Essex- she looked Essex-but was also a carer for her mother so all political decisions affected her.

Once breakfast was over we all made our way from the Great Hall to the Chambers.Along the very tiny narrow steep staircases and I inwardly scoffed ‘’surely the adult fat pouch MP’s can’t get through these daily?’’
Every young person had made the greatest effort to look smart and appropriate in their surroundings …and then I spotted her. A single female that had assumed wearing nothing on her legs would be a good idea. I also spotted another girl in high wedge raving heels-come on ladies!

CAN YOU SEE MISSY WITH ALL HER LEGS OUT?
The Principal doorkeeper of the House of Commons hosted and introduced us all and then the actual speaker of the HOC the Rt Hon John Bercow MP welcomed us and directed us on the running order of the day. Other adults present and supportive were Rt Hon Andrew Lansley MP and the Shadow Leader of the House, Angela Eagle MP.
The speaker said ‘what a joy it is to preside over such a calm and orderly chamber for the 4th annual UKYP!. I welcome you to this, our chamber, and hope your day is a success, look and remember the day you spoke and sat at the British hoc. We meet in a free society to debate what others globally cannot. One day the torch will pass from my hand to yours. Nurture it and protect it and pass it down to those that come after you. Before speaking stand and indicate your desire to speak, pause, say your name and the region you represent before beginning. Make your arguments succinctly; don’t interrupt your own speech as an MP this year did with his musical tie so please ensure your gadgets are all on silent. And thank you for being interested in your society- I always say ‘’If YOU don’t DO politics, then you have it done to you’!

THE LONDON UKYP MEMBERS ALL EAGER TO GET A CHANCE TO SPEAK.

Then a Message from the Prime Minister was read before the debates began.
Callum Crosier from North England,Northumberland introduced the Public Transport debate. He had clearly taken tips from Obama as his style of speech included repetitive phrasing at regular intervals “no no no”. He ended strongly with ‘’Divided we are weak, one nation, one notion, one campaign-better public transport”
Then from the East of England Amish Brown pleaded with us not to vote for public transport again ‘‘we haven’t achieved our goal this year. Let’s not vote again for this to be our most important campaign again this year. London already has discounts for youth public transport and there’s a national rail card”
The final speaker in conclusion for 1st debate summarized the motion in a very dynamic comical manner-remember him for the future-his name is Matthew Wilson.
The 2nd debate was about ‘Getting youth ready for work’ and covered areas like work experience, equal minimum national wage for everyone. There were a numerous that stood to speak with clear, confident voices and it was touching to see that whilst their vocals didn’t let them down, if you looked closely their hands were trembling! (After all this was also being aired live on the BBC’s Parliament channel too-no pressure!)
My assistant Rosa nudged me and whispered ‘”My belly pot feels sooo warm. I’m in awe. AND IM NEVER IN AWE. Brave confident and beautifully eloquent!’’

JASMINE WITH UKYP MEMBERS Chante Joseph FROM BRENT AND MICHAELLA PHILPOT FROM ESSEX.
The 3rd debate was Marriage for all led by Essex’s very own Michaella Philpot who looked beautifully groomed with full blonde head of hair and tan and really fought vocally for this motion. She had a little resistance from other youth who retorted ‘’it’s a Great motion but will the UK’s youth think this is a priority for their generation?
The male speaking against her motion added “Mr Speaker, as a person who’s not yet had my 1st proper snog yet- I’m not sure this is as much a priority as transport and work exp. I’d rather be well informed and travelled than well married- especially considering the annual number of married couples is at its lowest ever. We should focus on reducing the UKs high divorce rate. Love is love regardless of marital status”
Someone arguerd back “in a few years we’ll all be over 18 and married!” (my assistant Rosa, sharp as ever leaned over to me again and whispered ‘’that’s optimistic! Good luck with that lol!)
After lunch we had the final 2 debates, which were a ‘’minimum national wage for youth’’ where a very classy looking young black female Amaka Uchegbu- protested for the motion…

THE VERY BEAUTIFUL AND ARTICULATE UKYP MEMBER AMAKA UCHEGBU
‘‘The wage is so low its a disincentive for young people to work! It also discriminates against people from a lower socio economic background’’. ‘Will we look back and feel disgusted at the lower minimum wage for the young as we did for the slights against slaves and suffragettes?’ argued another young lady.

In the end it was the 5th debate that won as next years youth campaign and it was led by Sumaiya Karim for a ‘curriculum for life education’. This was a clear winner from my point of view as all youth should have lessons in how to run their financial affairs, sex education, mortgages, and much more.
I was a bit miffed that the adult members of parliament hadn’t all been made to sit and watch all these debates so they could see what’s important to young people and that how articulate they can be. only Simon Hughes MP and a few others popped in and out. Very poor.
So many youth stood out during the day including Chante Joseph from Brent who was an eloquent speaker and a passionate character full of personality who summed up the reason this motion was the right winner as she told the whole of the Commons about her ‘’”Dad who now works for spring studios with acts like Beyonce and Coldplay but always wishes he had life skills lessons as for years he didn’t understand so much of what he needed in society’’
LONDON360 reporter Eliot Goward had the young people queuing enthusiastically to speak to him on camera about how amazing and empowering their day had been and once again I mused ‘’young people , don’t let the media pigeonhole all of you as being unruly rioting layabouts- so many of you are world leaders!-the futures bright!’’

JASMINE’S JUICE featuring BRITISH YOUTH PARLIAMENT, SOLA AWARDS, ULTIMATE SEMINAR!

JASMINE AT THE HOUSE OF COMMONS FOR THE YOUTH PARLIAMENT ANNUAL DEBATE!
Young uns these days have it easy. Honestly. I feel so strongly about this that in the next few weeks I’m going to film myself having a rant on youtube. All I hear these days is how hard life as a young person is, but all I see around me are doors open wide to let them in- we can open doors but you have to walk through them yourselves!
As a youth I was working after school teaching ballet and streetdance, whilst at college I had summer jobs in Selfridges and Liberty. Whilst at university I was teaching aerobics in my local community as well as teaching jazz dance classes at Pineapple Dance Studios. I worked night shifts in my first TV job and I did it all with a smile cos I loved learning. There are media placements and workshops and courses that are free these days and I have young people calling in with excuses like ‘’its raining so I’m late’’, ‘’I didn’t know where I was going’’, ‘’I feel ill can I come another day’’. Really!? The internet tells you all you need to know about directions, rain ain’t never stopped me doing a damn thing and you don’t want to take opportunities that are handed to you on a plate? Really? Then you deserve to be miserable and unemployed at home!

This week I’ve witnessed amazing young people from the UK Youth Parliament speak at the House Of Commons, watched and met engaged youth at Media Trust take part in community journalist mentor sessions, seen hundreds of youngsters turn up to the Ultimate Seminar and next week I cannot wait to attend the Sprit Of London Awards (SOLA).
There are now more avenues than ever for youth to get involved with huge organisations and get connected on that first step of their career ladders!

I attended THE SPIRIT OF LONDON AWARDS last year at the Royal Albert Hall-it was an experience equal to the BRITS and MOBOS and even more satisfying as it honours and champions young people doing great things!
This years awards in association with PlayStation is on MONDAY DECEMBER 10TH at the O2 ARENA in NORTH GREENWICH.
Now in its 4th Year the awards were launched by the Damilola Taylor Trust in 2009 as a legacy project to Damilola and all the other young people lost to youth violence on streets of London through the Years. The aim of SOLA is to demonstrate to young people just how much their positive endeavours matter and how much they are valued. Looking to emulate the great celebrity awards events like BRITS and MOBOS with the only difference being that it is the young unsung heroes of London that become the celebrities for this event!
This years line- up is both amazing and eclectic and includes Labrinth, Diversity, Maverick Sabre, Chase & Status, Stooshe, Angel, Noisettes, ACM Choir feat Mizz Camara ,Mcfly and no doubt many more! Last year there were celebs, sports stars, everyone dressed in black tie and the show was produced beautifully!
The award categories cover virtually every aspect of interest and engagement for young people. The awards are open to young people aged 15 to 25 unless stated. Categories include Young London heroes (5-15), London Community Champions, Achievement through Music, Achievement through Sport, Achievement through the Arts, Achievement through Education, Achievement through Media, Achievement through Fashion, Young Business Entrepreneur, UK National Young Campaigner of the Year (5-15).
One final award is that of LONDON LEGEND – This award is voted for by young people and is given to an iconic Londoner they feel has graced London as a positive adult role model. In 2009 it was Sir Michael Caine – 2010 Barbara Windsor – 2011 Harry Redknapp! I can’t wait to see who wins this year!

In an arrangement with UK Athletics and Team GB London 2012 all the awards on the night will be presented by medallists from the Olympic and Paralympic squads- how exciting and incentivising for the young winners!.
Olympian Christine Ohuruogu told us “The Spirit of London Awards is such an important event and I have been lucky enough to have been involved every year from the start. This has been a fantastic year for London but the inner city areas still face huge challenges and so we should not lose sight of how important a project like this is – Putting the spotlight on the positive things young people are doing is not just refreshing it is vital if we are not to allow the small negative faction get all the attention – This is unfortunately what has tended to happen and SOLA brings some much needed balance in this respect”
SOLA Ambassador Dean Atta who is a very active voice for young people enthused “getting nominated for SOLA changed my life as it gave me so much more confidence in not just my poetry but also my ability to inspire others – The SOLA Foundation is now like a huge collective family of like -minded young people all of whom want to see positive change where negative issues effect young people – The Wall of Silence project shows just what we can achieve as a cohesive unit and it was great to see the police recognise this”

JASMINE WITH SOLA SUPPORTER LABRINTH!

Music star Labrinth who also performed at SOLA 2010 stated, “I love this event and all that it stands for. In 2010 I played an acoustic version of Bob Dylan’s timeless classic ‘Times They Are A-Changin’ as I think that it’s relevant to the project, and how it illuminates the positive things young people are doing in London”.
Ashley Banjo of Diversity said, “We performed at the inaugural event at the Alexandra Palace back in 2009 and then again at the Royal Albert Hall last Year. It truly is an amazing show and it is largely the unsung heroes that light up the stage with their stories – Diversity are so proud to be part of the SOLA family and cannot wait to get on The O2 stage this year to do our bit for the cause”
Mayor of London, Boris Johnson added, “The Spirit of London Awards represents everything that is great about London and it is so refreshing to see young people being rewarded for their positive contributions on such a grand scale”
Finally David Cameron – Prime Minister said, “These awards represent everything that is great about the young people of our Country. They are a credit to their community and to their city and I am delighted to see what a fantastic job the Damilola Taylor Trust has done in the way the project now has the young people who have come through the awards actually running the event. An extraordinary achievement and a fitting finale to what has been an amazing Year for our Capital City”
Every year I settle down with the Adidas family and my young reporters to watch this brilliant event and I will be front and centre cheering this years young winners on!

MOVERS AND SHAKERS IN THE UK MUSIC INDUSTRY AT THE ULTIMATE SEMINAR.
Next it was time for the annual Ultimate Seminar. I used to attend this as a new young buck in the music game way back in 1997. Back then it was called the Urban Seminar it taught me a lot about the industry and how it works. It also help me set up my network of peers in the industry I would claim as my own in future years. This event goes from strength to strength and this year saw a great turn out. Basically it’s a weekend event where hundreds of youngsters who want to work in some area of the music industry gather to hear a variety of special panels and speakers talk about the industry, how to do things, the highs and the lows. This years event at the University of Westminster saw a multitude of team UK players like singer Delilah, DJ Manny Norte, Island Records president Darcus Beese and many more come and share their specialist knowledge with the audience.

JASMINE WITH ULTIMATE SEMINAR FOUNDER KWAME!

My mate Kwame Kwaten- Co – founder, The Ultimate Seminar told me ‘’We started The Ultimate Seminar because there was a need to bridge that gap from classroom to boardroom – the music industry can be a treacherous sea for a person to swim in and sometimes you just need a heads up, someone to say I’m going through that too, and here’s how I got around it and dealt with it. This year we’ve had a great turn out and some real pearls of wisdom come from the stage and I think there are a lot of people that will leave today better off for it’’.

JASMINE WITH ULTIMATE SEMINAR SUPPORTER WRETCH32

Producer/songwriter Lucas Secon emphasized ‘’I feel it’s important to be able to relay to budding artists, producers and people in the industry how to break out worldwide from England, as England is now seen as a musically trend setting place and I feel like with my background in producing and songwriting with Christina Aguilera, Sugababes, Kylie, Britney, Mos Def all the way to alternative Gym Class Heroes, I’d be able to shed some different light on it’’.

ULTIMATE SEMINAR FOUNDER KWAME WITH ISLANDS RECORDS HEAD HONCHO-DARCUS!
One of my peers from many years ago, a great UK music man- Tim Blacksmith (Stargate Productions) smiled and looked proud as he stated ‘’The Utimate Seminar is a great thing to have – it’s important to inspire young people to be a part of making great music and being involved in the industry, whether it’s being a publisher right through to being in A&R. It’s always good to give back, I was one of those faces once, so I know how inspirational it was for me to hear some of the people talk and it gave me ideas’’.
Current TEAMUK chart hottie Wretch 32 said ‘’I think people have learnt a lot at The Ultimate Seminar – I’ve learnt a lot, and I hope that everyone we’ve spoken to has learnt a lot, without this event it just wouldn’t have been possible’’.

DELILAH AT THE ULTIMATE SEMINAR

So you see people, there are so many things out there opening doors to us all-you just have to open your eyes, search for them and act!

A MESSAGE FROM THE QUEEN TO ALL AMERICANS-(seconded by Jasmine!)

MESSAGE FROM THE QUEEN

To the citizens of the United States of America from Her Sovereign Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

In light of your failure in recent years to nominate competent candidates for President of the USA and thus to govern yourselves, we here
by give notice of the revocation of your independence, effective immediately. (You should look up ‘revocation’ in the Oxford English Dictionary.)

Her Sovereign Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will resume monarchical duties over all states, commonwealths, and territories (except North Dakota, which she does not fancy).

Your new Prime Minister, David Cameron, will appoint a Governor for America without the need for further elections.

Congress and the Senate will be disbanded. A questionnaire may be circulated next year to determine whether any of you noticed.

To aid in the transition to a British Crown dependency, the following rules are introduced with immediate effect:

1. The letter ‘U’ will be reinstated in words such as ‘colour,’ ‘favour,’ ‘labour’ and ‘neighbour.’ Likewise, you will learn to spell ‘doughnut’ without skipping half the letters, and the suffix ‘-ize’ will be replaced by the suffix ‘-ise.’ Generally, you will be expected to raise your vocabulary to acceptable levels. (look up ‘vocabulary’).

2. Using the same twenty-seven words interspersed with filler noises such as ”like’ and ‘you know’ is an unacceptable and inefficient form of communication. There is no such thing as U.S. English. We will let Microsoft know on your behalf. The Microsoft spell-checker will be adjusted to take into account the reinstated letter ‘u” and the elimination of ‘-ize.’

3. July 4th will no longer be celebrated as a holiday.

4. You will learn to resolve personal issues without using guns, lawyers, or therapists. The fact that you need so many lawyers and therapists shows that you’re not quite ready to be independent. Guns should only be used for shooting grouse. If you can’t sort things out without suing someone or speaking to a therapist, then you’re not ready to shoot grouse.

5. Therefore, you will no longer be allowed to own or carry anything more dangerous than a vegetable peeler. Although a permit will be required if you wish to carry a vegetable peeler in public.

6. All intersections will be replaced with roundabouts, and you will start driving on the left side with immediate effect. At the same time, you will go metric with immediate effect and without the benefit of conversion tables. Both roundabouts and metrication will help you understand the British sense of humour.

7. The former USA will adopt UK prices on petrol (which you have been calling gasoline) of roughly $10/US gallon. Get used to it.

8. You will learn to make real chips. Those things you call French fries are not real chips, and those things you insist on calling potato chips are properly called crisps. Real chips are thick cut, fried in animal fat, and dressed not with catsup but with vinegar.

9. The cold, tasteless stuff you insist on calling beer is not actually beer at all. Henceforth, only proper British Bitter will be referred to as beer, and European brews of known and accepted provenance will be referred to as Lager. South African beer is also acceptable, as they are pound for pound the greatest sporting nation on earth and it can only be due to the beer. They are also part of the British Commonwealth – see what it did for them. American brands will be referred to as Near-Frozen Gnat’s Urine, so that all can be sold without risk of further confusion.

10. Hollywood will be required occasionally to cast English actors as good guys. Hollywood will also be required to cast English actors to play English characters. Watching Andie Macdowell attempt English dialect in Four Weddings and a Funeral was an experience akin to having one’s ears removed with a cheese grater.

11. You will cease playing American football. There is only one kind of proper football; you call it soccer. Those of you brave enough will, in time, be allowed to play rugby (which has some similarities to American football, but does not involve stopping for a rest every twenty seconds or wearing full kevlar body armour like a bunch of nancies).

12. Further, you will stop playing baseball. It is not reasonable to host an event called the World Series for a game which is not played outside of America. Since only 2.1% of you are aware there is a world beyond your borders, your error is understandable. You will learn cricket, and we will let you face the South Africans first to take the sting out of their deliveries.

13.. You must tell us who killed JFK. It’s been driving us mad.

14. An internal revenue agent (i.e. tax collector) from Her Majesty’s Government will be with you shortly to ensure the acquisition of all monies due (backdated to 1776).

15. Daily Tea Time begins promptly at 4 p.m. with proper cups, with saucers, and never mugs, with high quality biscuits (cookies) and cakes; plus strawberries (with cream) when in season.

God Save the Queen!

JASMINE’S JUICE featuring INDIA, CDN AWARDS and STRICTLY COME LAUGHING STAR JERMAINE JACKMAN!

JASMINE WITNESSES FISH DRAGGED STRAIGHT OUT OF THE OCEAN IN THE FISH MARKET IN INDIA.
This week I forked out £30 quid for a horrific 70’s outfit from a fancy dress store for a 70’s themed birthday party, attended Hackney Empire again for the comedy show Strictly Come Laughing, had a romantic dinner at the ROOF GDNS restaurant Babylon, took the London360 news reporters to SKY TV for a meet and greet session , had our regular MTV NEWS reunion, grabbed a quick cup of tea with rapper/activist JAJA

JASMINE BUYS SOME FRESH FRUIT AND VEG AT THE INDIAN MARKET-SMELLS AMAZING!
I also took my mum to India for 10 days for her birthday treat. It was crazy! I love countries where everything is alien to us. When exiting the airport in Mumbai every sense is assaulted simultaneously. The heat is like walking into an oven. The unrelenting noise and sound of the people and cars honking is a shock. The sheer volume of people, cars, motorbikes, colourful clothing, animals and extraordinary buildings is mesmerising. The smells of exotic flowers, spicy cooking, piles of sewage and religious incense are suffocating. It’s a real holiday in that so much is different to what is ‘normal’ to me here in the UK! I travel a lot and many American, European and African cities all resemble each other, but it’s really in parts of Asia that I truly feel I am experiencing something new.
So it was a little disappointing to discover that the capital of Bollywood-Mumbai- is vastly becoming the same city as everywhere else! I’ve been before, but this visit showed how fast the country is developing. I loved it more when it was quite un influenced by western corporate brands, but now there are name brands everywhere. Body shop, costa, Starbucks, KFC, McDonalds, Pizza Hut and many more. I was stunned!

JASMINE OBSERVES INDIA’S VARIETY OF ROAD USERS IN PUNE!
On previous trips I’ve been used to seeing herds of ox, cattle, bull etc walking by in the roads. I’ve seen traffic stopped by the occasional elephant that’s decided to plonk itself in the middle of the road and all the traffic and people continue on around it without batting an eyelid. There was nothing quite that wondrous this time around-just the odd 4 legged straggler. Oh, aside from the fact that tailors out there charged 200 rupees to make a copy of any dress/blouse/piece of clothing I liked. That’s just over £2 what with 85 rupees making up a pound.

MCDONALDS LOCAL VERSIONS!
Then I popped to their McDonalds (which amusingly had a maharaja mac and MCspicy Paneer , MCspicy chicken as staple favourites), to find a fillet-o-fish cost more than the tailor charged to make a bespoke piece of clothing! Shocking! No wonder Primark prices are so cheap?! Surely India needs a better chart of fair pay?

ANYONE FANCY A GOATS HEAD FOR DINNER?
I did also travel to Pune. Originally known as Poona- where yoga enthusiasts from around the globe flock to retreats and schools. This was more rural feeling with its quaint old meat, fish, vegetable and fruit markets. I tried not to be a horrified, carnivore as I observed goats have their necks sliced open and huge piles of intestines pile up on the side.

A PILE OF INTESTINES WITH GOAT SKINS ALONGSIDE-NICE!

ANOTHER LIVE CHICKEN LOOKS CONCERNED AS ITS WEIGHED JUST BEFORE SLAUGHTER ”BUT I PROVIDED ALL THOSE EGGS FOR YOU…!”
I watched the sad looking chickens get weighed on a scale and have their necks wrung as they were picked to be a korma that night. I watched fishermen haul fresh, giant, still flapping fish into the fish market, I smelt amazing smells as I went shopping for fresh salad ingredients- their vast array of big, tasty fruit and veg tasted a lot better than ours.

CUSTARD APPLES! LOADS OF THEM! YUM!
My favourite fruit is a sitphal-known in the western world as a custard apple. Its green scaly crocodile skin and fleshy, juicy white fruit inside fascinate me! I’m also partial to a bright pink guava pear!

BRIGHT PINK DELICIOUS GUAVA PEARS!
We were there during the week of Diwali so regular sounds of bombs going off (I was reassured they were fireworks!), and festivity filled the air. Giant mountains of bright orange marigold flowers were dumped on the roadsides as workers sewed them together into garlands ready to adorn doorways, statues and people.

MARIGOLD FLOWERS PILE UP IN ANTICIPATION OF DIWALI

A FLOWER SELLER PAINSTAKINGLY SEWS FLOWERS TOGETHER TO MAKE DIWALI GARLANDS!
Whilst I was out there the Duchess of Cornwall – Camilla was also out there on a yoga retreat so the locals were all agog with Royal hype!
Also whilst out there Naomi Campbell threw a 50th birthday bash for her boyfriend Vladimir Doronin’s with no expense spared! The guests were flown in via 12 private jets and included Kate Moss, Demi Moore, Bob Geldof, Sarah Ferguson and Eva Herzigova. Diva Diana Ross performed for half a million and the only downer was the Mumbai based party planner being arrested for excessive noise as the fort where one of the 2 parties was held.
Recently loads of music stars have been out there to perform. They include J Lo and Akon and upcoming performers include Lady Gaga and David Guetta so it seems that celebrities are most definitely aware that India is a huge untapped gold mine that’s got mucho spending power!

On my return I was home straight off the plane and into the studio to film the LADIES TALK TV show for SKY 218. Straight after that it was off to the annual CDN Awards at the Hackney Empire, which this year saw us, win an award! Yeay! We were thrilled that Media Trust’s Breaking into News initiative enabled ITN and ITV News to win a prestigious Creative Diversity Network award, giving us great recognition (and positive praise from ITN/ITV) among a huge audience of media great & good, including Tim Davie (Acting BBC DG), our own trustee Sophie Turner Laing, and a few hundred others. BBC Acting Director General Tim Davie hosted the awards alongside Amanda Rice -Head of BBC Diversity. Davie praised the work of the broadcasters for their behind the scenes initiatives like the Hackney Weekend (Radio1) project and indie company Shine’s ‘The Hatch’ project which aims to give young marginalised people the opportunity to work on media production. Entertainment was provided by Shappi Khorsandi and Stephen K Amos. “I’ve been coming to similar events for years but this year it really feels like we’re winning on diversity,” said Channel 4 presenter Krishnan Guru Murthy presenter of the Factual Award. Best Diversity Initiative was won by- BBC Vision Intake Pool. Best Nations & Regions Programme WINNER was Making Bradford British (Love Productions for Channel 4). Coronation Street won the Radio Times Soap Award – voted for by the public. Best Factual Programme presented by Krishnan Guru Murthy was won by- Letting Go (October Films for BBC One) , and finally the 2012 Award for Outstanding Achievement presented by Tim Davie went to Channel 4’s Paralympics coverage which was more than well deserved!
It was a great evening full of positivity- even Lenny Henry’s presence didn’t irritate me as much as usual!. CDN Awards Creative Lead and BBC Diversity Manager, Chantal Badjie said: “we wanted this year’s awards to feel celebratory, entertaining and yet give a serious message. Based on the feedback from the audience and our partners across the CDN, it looks like we achieved that”

Finally hats off to the organisers of Strictly Come Laughing 4 at the Hackney Empire. This fantastic event showed the big-hearted side of comedy as all performers donated their time free of charge to raise money for the impoverished town of Kwahu Tafo in Ghana.
The sold out show was hosted by BBC London’s top broadcaster Eddie Nestor with film and TV star Robbie Gee and kicked off to a brilliant start by the up and coming and very funny Axel.
He was followed by a very risqué but funny set by Rudy Lickwood who suggested that one way to ensure young children were in their houses by 8pm would be to ‘’release all paedophiles onto the streets at this time!’’. Other comedians included one of my personal and crowd favourites Slim (who tells me he is planning another one man show sometime in 2013) Eddie Kadi and Kevin J who had the crowd in stitches with a short preview of their forthcoming show Ed’n’Kev, Stephen K Amos, Glenda Jaxson who had the men squirming with her stories about boring sex, Quincy, Mr Cee and the always funny, Tony Hendrix.

Remember the name, Jermaine Jackman, the 17-year-old Hackney singer (fresh from performing at the Apollo theatre in Harlem) received the nights only standing ovation and is set for big things.
We were also blessed with a heart-thumping, toe tapping treat from the cast members of award winning West End musical Stomp.
There was also a plethora of Celebrities doing their bit on the night including Britain’s answer to Denzel Washington the gorgeous Hugh Quarshie, also from Holby City Jimmy Akingbola who plays Malick and Chizzy Akudolu who plays Mo, star of Babyfather and Waking The Dead and about to become the 1st Black full time cast member of Emmerdale Wil Johnson and from EastEnders, Teachers, Casualty and so much more the gorgeous Ellen Thomas.

A great night full of belly laughs and we could all feel good about ourselves knowing every penny was going directly to help build a better life for the people of Kwahu Tafo Roll on Strictly 5(to find out more about where the money goes or to make donations www.friendsoftafo.org). Over £11,000 was raised on Sunday for Kwahu Tafo! now that’s people powered change!

JASMINE’S JUICE featuring former DAMAGE LEAD VOCALIST-COREE RICHARDS and JONZI D!

JASMINE WITH FORMER DAMAGE LEAD VOCALLIST-COREE RICHARDS
It must be tough being a leading act that paves the way for others, who year’s later profit from the ground work you’ve put in. Over the years the debate in music about whether old skool acts can be recompensed at all for their graft laying the path for their future successors has raged on. DJ Kool Herc and his early hip-hop peers often end up poor, ill and destitute whilst their newer counterparts like Jay Z, Lil Wayne and 50 Cent are rolling in the cash.
Similarly UK acts like Omar, Eternal and many more a couple of decades ago fought the system for years only to have minimal household fame.
Today when I see JLS taking over the world I’m proud and happy for them. Their parallel act back in the day could’ve been a number of bands like MN8, Another Level, Ultimate Kaos and more, but the one at the forefront could be seen as Damage. With their hits ‘Wonderful Tonight’ and ‘Ghetto Romance’, the band worked hard in the nineties with minimal success, as the UK charts weren’t as urban-music-friendly as they are now.
This week I caught up with Damages former lead vocalist Coree Richards. His story is incredible, full of highs and lows, pain and pride.

Coree revealed that up until 10 years ago the band were still performing to pay their bills and nothing more-the pleasure had gone from their group relationship.
He had shared his feelings with the band about wanting to occasionally do solo songs as well as remain with the band, as he wanted to be more individual and do his own thing. Many acts at the time did the same; for example boy band Boyzones Ronan Keating, take that’s Robbie Williams, Blue’s Duncun, Another Levels Wayne Williams and more. Apparently the group were extremely unhappy about this and forced Coree to choose between a solo career or them. After a while of painful deliberating Coree chose a solo path.
Coree revealed pained ‘’ the guys all stopped speaking to me after that, my communication with the boys went to zero. I was so depressed I went to Thailand initially to party and to distance myself from everyone. The main objective was to go find myself. The last few months living out there i stayed at a Buddhist retreat. This helped me experience real life without being in a fake bubble. It was hard. I had so many initial fears “what will I do next’.
Coree felt like timing had been against him ‘’ I had turned down a lot of solo deal offers and lost opportunities whilst within the band and now that it had taken me so long to decide I had lost my momentum so I partied and wasted my time literally getting wasted-’ I do look back and wish my timing had been better’.

I myself recall this time. I recall the London music scene whispering about how Coree had lost his way and found solace in drugs and alcohol. Coree nodded ‘’I eventually found my love for music again. I taught local kids to sing at local schools in Harrow near where I live-I still teach them, it helps me give back to the community’’
A while after this Coree bought himself a mac computer and started to learn how to produce for himself but found that many of his peers had turned against him. ‘’Certain producers that used to work with the band that Damage had given their first breaks to were either not returning my calls or trying to charge me sums that were out of my range!’’.
Other industry brands were seemingly blackballing him too. He added ‘’Damage used to be the ChoiceFM babies but now DJ’s like Jenny Francis wouldn’t even get back to me!’’
(Damage member Andre’s dad Daddy Ernie was a ChoiceFM presenter at the time so things there were probably always going to be frosty)

Things were to get colder for Coree. He remembered the last time he saw his one time fellow band members ‘’there was a Ghetto Romance party arranged in Muswell Hill. A past Damage outer team staff member had invited me to come along and try and be cordial to the boys, I turned up and security wouldn’t let me in. Eventually I was inside and all the band was really throwing me negative vibes and screwfacing me. I had gone on a peaceful vibe but Andre (who seemed the worse for wear-maybe with alcohol was quite aggressive’’.
(I could relate very well to what Coree was revealing to me here. I myself had been on the ugly end of Andre’s ego when I was the head of production at MTV BASE a few years back. MTV BASE and CHOICEFM had a joint float at Notting Hill Carnival. On the Sunday we were happy for all to join the float, as we weren’t working. But on the Monday we had a full float of staff and music acts and the float was dangerously over health and safety regulation numbers. We were told only working staff could remain on the float. Andre had a major problem with this and months later at DJ Swings death anniversary party thought it appropriate to drunkenly scream at me and aggressively tell me why deserved to be on that float cos his dad was once a part of ChoiceFM (LOL) and he had thought we were family! I had attempted to explain that it wasn’t personal and that business had to come first. He didn’t get that then so Corees story didn’t surprise me at all. It was shocking mostly as once upon a time Andre had the reputation of being the most friendly and cordial of the group).

Coree continued ‘’it was Very hurtful. They turned their back on me. They were my brothers. I was in a very troubled space. They told me that I now was risky to the bands reputation as they often worked with disadvantaged young Kids and that my troubles would reflect badly on them. They didn’t see the irony of the fact that they were turning their backs on a close one time family member who needed them the most at this point in his life’’.
Coree feels there was added pressure due to band member Jades relationship with Spice Girl Emma Bunton. He feels that ‘’Andre and Damage hang onto Jade, and the domino affect from there continues’’.
Coree revealed the way that he learned that he had been chucked out of the reformed group was shocking and unprofessional ‘’The band wrote a letter to our fans in 2010 to tell fans they’d asked Coree to leave. This was not what Coree wants. This is for 4 of us not the total 5’’. They did all this without even having the decency and manners to first tell Coree. Impressive.
Coree shrugs his shoulders ‘’ its all good though, I’ve moved on. Though it would be good to hear them all do new music. I’ve had meetings with mutual mates who had blacklisted me. Promoters often think all 5 members are turning up at performances. Often their shows see posters that are promoted as a 5 piece act even though I’m no longer part of the band’.
Coree continued to set up his own production company ‘’Black Swan Entertainment’’ and is currently working with a few producers like the UK’s Smujji who had a hit with FYA called “Must be love”
Other people he’s working with include afrobeats style producer Af3ka (Antoine Stone).
On his new material he has attempted a few new styles but stayed close to bands style cos of course he was the original main vocalist. So inevitably much of his material sounds like classic Damage material, which the fans love.
He’s currently made around 60 tracks for his solo album ‘’Damaged but not broken’’. The tracks are mostly Up-tempo. ‘‘There’s often a Dance remix for the fans that are now on that vibe. I’ve moved with the times. I have Dubstep mixes. Some soulful. But I’ve really concentrated on the lyrical content, not loads of monotonous repetition but a telling of whole stories’’.
Coree revealed a couple of the hardest tracks to make were based on personal experiences . One tracks titled “A fathers word” for his 2-year-old son. He revealed that he’s been fighting to see son for the last 2 years.
Another track-the title track “Damaged but not broken”- is about being in the band, having success and then the fame leaving you in the shadows.
Coree has felt a deep pain from abandonment and loss of his one time band of brothers but he remains open, honest and positive about his experience ‘’ I’ve made great tracks so I know they’ll push themselves through. There are a few new acts I like Jessie J, Beverly Knight and Emile Sande-they stand out to me, but I don’t wanna jump on the bandwagon and collaborate with lots of new acts. I wanna steer clear of being like everyone else. I want to fly the flag for UK soul again. I’d love to write JLS a song. There’s so much autotune around these days I keep asking myself ‘where’s the R&B?’’ Acts like Chris brown and usher are all selling their souls with their style now. It’s so Hard to get on radio stations now. Djs can’t play what they want anymore with playlists being forced upon them. I’ve been lucky with Radio1Xtra supporting me with my single ‘’Body Talk’’ which will be released in the New Year –it’s a sexy song, just what you’d expect from me LOL. The videos coming soon too. I reached out to director Max from Max and Dania who used to work with us in the past but…yeah you guessed it-he wouldn’t return my call. I don’t like to bug anyone so I’m directing and editing it myself’’.
Corees can-do attitude will surely persevere. He agrees ‘’ Doing music and being great at it is my way of dealing with my struggles. my fans keep me motivated when they communicate with me on corree_damage. This is the great times. Being a father affects my music cos its more serious now. I know I Must make more of a business with it and I want to give back to the youth and help the new generation’’.
And with that Coree smiled like a man finally at peace with himself and his life and went off to prepare for his impending trip to perform out in Dubai!. follow coree at @COREE_DAMAGE.

Finally a big Congrats to my one time dance partner Jonzi D for being awarded a Children In Need award of funding of £63,000 for his brand Breakin’ Convention for Hip Hop Hospital, a project delivering a programme of hip hop related activity to children’s hospital wards across the country. The Hip Hop Hospital sees Breakin’ Convention Artistic Director Jonzi D and artists from the company’s education team visit children’s hospitals across the UK to bring interactive workshops in rap, music, dance and graffiti to hospital bedsides and social areas.
David Ramsden, Chief Executive of BBC Children in Need, said: “We are delighted to be supporting Breakin’ Convention, which is one of hundreds of projects we support that help children and young people across the UK. We can only do this due to the incredible generosity of our supporters and they should all be really proud.”
Hip Hop Hospital, which began in 2009 with an inaugural programme at Great Ormond Street, offers a combination of group work and one-to-one sessions with the industry leading artists Breakin’ Convention provides. Young patients learn many of the key skills involved in hip hop culture, from how to sketch graffiti and spray paint, to writing raps, recording tracks and making beats. They also learn elements of filming and photography, as well as discovering more about hip hop history
Each of the workshops are filmed and documented as a short film incorporating the children’s music and raps as soundtracks, their art work as visuals, and recording the interaction between the patients and the artists for the children to keep after the project.
Jonzi D, said: “Hip Hop Hospital brings young people engagement and excitement into an environment that is otherwise seen as an unpleasant place to be, particularly for long term patients.”
One week, 2 amazing men who have beaten the odds to a victorious finish.

JASMINE’S JUICE featuring DELILAH and LADIES TALK TV SHOW!

JASMINE AND DELILAH
The striking singer Delilah invited me to see her perform at West London’s Shepherds Bush Empire. Her show Line up included acoustic vocalist Josh Kumra and the ever-elusive Wiley.

First onstage was Josh Kumra who is an act very in the vein of Ed Sheeran. His celebrity mate Mr Hudson came on with him to perform too. Josh is very good vocally and on guitar but maybe a bit shy, as we didn’t see much personality onstage. He could blow up with one big hit so he’s definitely a ‘’watch this space’’ kind of artist.

Wiley actually turned up-he’s getting good at this now. He bounced around onstage and did all his hit. He was rocking a very everyday casual jeans and zip up jacket outfit and true to form he had the crowd very hyped. I sometimes think he doesn’t look 100% comfortable in public. He needs to enjoy being onstage more as the crowd genuinely love him. At the end of his set there was an anti climax as he didn’t acknowledge and formally end his set with a thank you or anything, nevertheless the crowd adored him-especially since his track heat wave had recently been a number one. We love you Wiley-now love us back!

Then it was time for the main lady-Delilah!

DELILAH IN HER CROWD!
I was initially confused when I had heard others refer to her in person as ‘’Paloma’’? After questioning this I was informed that Paolma Faith had come out in public just before Delilah and so Delilah was forced to take another stage name 9her own real name is Paloma Ayana Stoecker)-how irritating must that be! So a few years down Delilah is here, it suits her and is inspired by her great grandma. I like Delilah’s story coming up in this music game. She’s had a real music artist’s path into the scene, which has prepared her for the rough road that many Brit school and x factor singers wont have a clue how to deal with. She’s sounds and looks unique. I like her image. Just check out her Wikipedia!.
Backstage before a show Delilah likes a quiet calm atmosphere with only her close team, hair and makeup. She doesn’t encourage friends hanging out and joking until after her show. She uses the time to get into her zone so that she can focus and do vocal exercises, which involve lots of screeching (a true singer!).
Delilah wore 1 outfit for the whole show. She didn’t need another-it was striking enough. Made by a designer called Tula who made her a bustier out of crystals to emphasise and highlight her glamazon figure. She rocked shoes by one of her favourite shoe designers Giuseppe Zanotti who loves her! (I need a special relationship with a shoe designer!)
In the crowd which was very diverse and mixed in age and race, were bloggers and the occasional star like wretch32.
A particular big moment that stood out was when Delilah did a cover of the Crystal Waters anthem ‘’Homeless’’ song. Surprisingly to me most of crowd knew it.

DELILAH DURING HER FINAL TRACK!
Delilah did her thing for a whole hour and even bought her sister Tabitha out onstage! (She of the ‘Tabitha mummy and me’’ song (who wouldn’t leave the stage after the gypsy woman song lol). Delilah shared the mic love though and also picked members of the audience out to sing onstage with her
At the end of the show when most of the crowd assumed the night was over, Delilah surprised them by turning up in the middle of the crowd and a lone strong spotlight switched on in the centre of the auditorium to see her sing her final number amongst her clearly very excited fans! Right at the end a shower of multi coloured glitter fell from the rooftop and covered her to everyone’s camera delight!
This lady’s one to watch as she sings strongly and writes her own music- signed to Atlantic records, she was nominated for best newcomer at this years MOBO’s in a very strong category and she was also just on Never mind the Buzzcocks so I can imagine that Jools Holland is just around the corner too! Afterwards we all went up to the bar for the after party, which was very intimate for the record label and family and friends.

JASMINE WITH HER FELLOW ”LADIES TALK” PANELLISTS ON SET!
Finally Twitter and Facebook was a buzz with the new TV ladies talk show- LADIES TALK on SKY 218. Its now 3 shows in and you love it!
On the panel are lead host ladies Angie Le Mar and Jacqui Joseph, joined by resident panellists Bonnie Greer, Jackie Michaels and myself. The first show saw us discuss sisterhood, Rihanna as a role model, are you too old to wear that? Jimmy Savile-gate, ambitious women, Camilla’s Indian yoga retreat and the top 10 excuses women make not to have sex! As if that wasn’t enough fun with the heated back and fort debates, we were joined by English actress Ellen Thomas who has had many television and film roles, but is perhaps best known for her recurring role in the Channel 4 Bristol-based comedy, Teachers or as Grace Olubunmi in EastEnders. Ellen looked ravishing in her cleavage-showing shirt and was an inspiring first guest o the show. This woman has been in practically every British hit show from Casualty to Doctor Who to Grange Hill, The Bill, Holby City and more. She revealed that she’s currently starring opposite Pierce Brosnan as his sexy secretary and starring in the new youth urban comedy film ‘’Its Alot’’.
Ladies talk discusses issues that affect us all, women and men of every age and culture and it’s a lot more connected than Loose Women. Its unapologetically saucy, serious, articulate and forward thinking. In the same way that Loose Women makes no justification for not having a resident woman of colour on the panel, we just happen to be a panel of ethnic women.
We are all part of history in the making in British TV. The format may have been done already, but what we bring is a new vibrant and coherent talk show that will change the face of talk TV in the UK, by showing them how it is done. For all of us exclusion is not an option, and we proved in the first 3 shows that making good innovative television is not solely for the chosen few. There is still a lot of work to be done. We are at the birth stage, so let’s keep the level of professionalism up and ensure that LADIES TALK becomes the most watched and talked about show on the daytime television network. It is important that we all play our part in spreading the word, it doesn’t matter how big or small your contribution is, they all matter. Join us in the audience every week by getting in touch with straighttoaudience@angielemar.com.
Watch us on SKY 218 at these times weekly-we’d love your feedback!

JASMINES JUICE featuring the MUSIC, VIDEO AND SCREEN AWARDS-BIRMINGHAM!

JASMINE WITH AWARDS HOST-ACTOR HUGH QUARSHIE AT THE MVSA AWARDS
So this week I’ve amused myself in a variety of ways. First I had dinner with model Rachel Ritfeld at her new London home. You may know Rachel from having graced many a magazine cover; music videos or catwalk shows as well as starring in a past Channel4 show A place in the sun. Hailing from Surinam in South America to central London via Europe is how Rachel Ritfeld has come to prominence in the world of all things glamorous. She’s also a goodwill ambassador for Surinam in the UK and involved in a plethora of ventures, ranging from catwalk model and entrepreneur, to being the one time UK face of American hip-hop guru Damon Dash’s exclusive line of bling-bling Tiret watches. Now a mother and TV presenter for a new range of TV shows you will hear about soon, this tenacious woman cannot be stopped.

JASMINE WITH THE ACTOR RUDOLPH WALKER AT THE MVSA AWARDS
Then I took my mum to the Ritz for lunch for her birthday. I receive daily Bookatable e-mail voucher options so when the Ritz one popped up a while ago I knew it was time to take mummy there. I’ve attended a few times for afternoon tea but never lunch and I have to say the experience was amazing! They greeted her so well. The maitre d announced ‘’welcome Mrs Dotiwala- and many happy returns of the day!’’ She was so chuffed! Our £50 per head voucher was for 3 courses and 2 glasses of wine but we received at least double that and rose champagne. The waiters couldn’t have made us feel more comfortable and talked us through every dish and wine impeccably. The whole experience lasted nearly 3 hours! They even gave her a Ritz goodie bag with birthday cake to take home at the end. The Ritz brand certainly has a reputation for a good reason. It was exquisite! A wonderful experience that id recommend to everyone! (With a voucher LOL!)

JASMINE WITH MUSIC LEGEND OMAR AND ACLT’S ORIN LEWIS AT THE MVSA AWARDS
Next of course we had the annual MOBO Awards where TLC, Trey Songz and many TEAMUK acts did their thing.
But before all that I was lucky enough to be invited to the annual MUSIC, VIDEOAND SCREEN AWARDS in Birmingham.
As ever my Dolce & Gabbana team raced a ballgown across to me at the last minute! My saviours! Thank you guys!
It was my first time attending THE MVSA AWARDS and it was a really well put together evening. At the Birmingham International Convention Centre, the venue was heaving with men in black tie and ladies in beautiful long, classy gowns. The ballroom was full of candle lit dinner tables with silver service waiting staff. The pre dinner reception saw photographers bustling with power players and CapitalFM Birmingham were also in the house. A few Birmingham-ites strolled over to tell e how much they enjoyed reading this column and in particular a young man seemed genuinely excited to meet me gushing about his excitement. I only wished VOICE boss George Ruddock who was also in the house networking with his fellow power players were present in that moment. I was about to ask the young man to re-enact his excitement in a staged moment in front of George but was quickly ushered into the ballroom, as the show was about to begin.
The awards were Hosted by Holby City actor Hugh Quarshie (Dr Rick Griffiths) and Eastenders actress Tameka Epsom (Kim). I have always though Hugh is the most handsome, distinguished older man and has a certain Denzel Washington thing going on! He and Tameka were a very entertaining double act. Hugh was gracious and sharp and Tameka as ever brought the quick 1 liners and comedy to proceedings!
Everywhere you looked were movers and shakers from the acting and theatre world and the vibe in the room was classy and sophisticated. On my table were comedy house talent manager Sarah Moore, actress Sharon D Clark (Holby City), Rudolph Walker (Eastenders Patrick Trurman) his real life daughter Shoena and his old screen wife Angela Wynter who played Yolande Trueman. Patrick had ladies queuing up all night to take a photo with him. At one point all the ladies on our table and his daughter felt like we were his security as we had to fend off his female admirers- he was so accommodating to all and a gallant gent all night-what a great guy!

JASMINE WITH MICHELLE KELLY, KUSH FILMS MARLON PALMER, MUSICIAN DAVID PROSPER AND ANGIE LE MAR AT THE MVSA AWARDS
On an adjacent table were Eastenders actor Chuckie Venn, luxury goods designer Alexander Amosu, actress, comedian and talk show host Angie Le Mar with her hubby David Prosper. Also in the house were singer Omar looking very lithe and dapper in his tweed jacket, actor Jimmy Akingbola who was very loud and had the audience laughing all evening with his infectious personality, lovers rock singer Janet Kay who performed her classic ‘’Silly games’’ during which I screeched at the top of my tone deaf voice, the ACLT’S head man and lady Orin Lewis and Beverley de-gale, ITN newsreader Charlene White, Birmingham’s very own justice Williams MBE and many many more.

ITN’S CHARLENE WHITE ACCEPTING HER AWARD AT THE MVSA AWARDS
The show was kicked off by an amazingly energetic troupe of young fame style singer/dancers that did a long set in which they had us all singing and dancing alongside them. The show is special in that it engages and empowers youth to produce the whole event from stage-managing to scripting. It was great to see them take charge and lead the event with confidence.

JASMINE WITH ”HER” MSVA AWARD
At the start of the evening THE VOICE big boss George Ruddock had asked me to present the award for best theatre production. He had done it himself for the past 3 years and decided to let me have a go. So I being a professional lass decided to hold off from drinking not a sip of alcohol until after I’d presented my award so the glasses of champagne and wine were lined up around my dinner plate awaiting me to finish onstage. Just before my moment however a stage manager informed me that George was going to be presenting the award solo so I could relax. Great I thought relaxing as instructed and knocked back 3 glasses of my awaiting plonk. 10 minutes later the stage manager returns to my table and whispers her apologies and informs me that I will indeed be needed to present the award alongside George. Whoops! My thighs were already feeling alcohol heavy and my vocal chords were slurring in a party of their own. Oh well I thought, do your professional best. It was okay in the end and as far as I know no one noticed my swaying state as I presenter the winning award to Julius Ceasar .
All the awards were interspersed with entertainment in the form of music, comedy and more. A young lady that performed a Whitney Houston tribute particularly stood out. She was beautiful and her vocals really did remind us of Whitney-she was strong and powerful-a great tribute! The night culminated with an after party at the very impressive top floor 360 degree glass rooftop Marco Pierre white restaurant on the top floor of the indigo hotel in the cube. Actor will Johnson DJ’ed and the drinks flowed until the early hours. Kush films founder Marlon Palmer had us all entertained with his banter and I stole Curtis Walkers comedy award so I could pose with it all night. A great awards ceremony that was on a par with the best of them- definitely the best screen awards I have attended. Very professional- great job by founder Dean Alexander.

JASMINE’S JUICE featuring James Bond and Cameo!

JASMINE WITH CAMEO AFTER THEIR SHOW, AT THE LEGENDARY JAZZ CAFE IN CAMDEN.
My uncle Johnny is a top money honcho at eon productions that make all the James Bond movies. Over the years I hear his amazing stories and anecdotes about the heads of the company-the legendary Albert ‘’Cubby’’ Broccoli and his daughter Barbara broccoli. The making of the James Bond films always sounds so exiting, romantic, top secret and the end product is always worth it. So when uncle Johnny offered me tickets to the cast and crew screening in Leicester square early one Saturday morning a week before the film was out in the public realm, I did of course jump at the chance. I
As expected, it was amazing! Adele kicks it off with the amazing theme song, which is true divalicious belting out of a ballad in typical bond style. Ca-ching goes her and her record labels already bulging weighed down pockets!
The opening scenes are always legendary aren’t they? I recall my last favourite opening scene was in Casino Royale film when they had parkour free running showcased. This time around the film opens with motorbike stunt riding highlighted and is breath taking! From the moment it starts it sucks you in for 2 and a half whole hours and you are gripped by the action and narrative, which this time around shows the evolving of the characters in the future. The ever-present ‘’Quarterman’’/ gadget man Q is a new nerdy very young teen looking boy who has years of acting left in him. Can you imagine his contract and the retainer this young actor must be on>? He really struck lucky. Similarly the film producers had to safe guard their infamous lady boss character M played by Judi Dench. They deal with the character so that M lives on. I wont spoil it for you in case you’ve not seen it yet –but Skyfall fall doesn’t disappoint. There are the regular product placement branded scenes focusing on Aston Martin, Omega watches, Adidas sneakers, and mobile phones but all done in the best possible taste.
Watching so much action shot in the streets of London with our buildings and tube trains excited me no end-I’m a proud Londoner and seeing it portrayed in movies like this makes me see that we can easily stand strong and equal against big bucks cities like new york on the world movie stage.
The 2 main young lead actress roles were cast to women of colour- a black woman-Naomi Harris and an Asian woman- Berenice Marlohe. That’s a huge deal in this day and age! My only gripe was I felt the females didn’t have as much sexy time and glamorous looks as in the past. I imagine the producers tried to keep with the diplomat themes of the current austerity themes. Oh well, I guess even Bond has to tighten his belt sometimes and get all A Team in the ‘’make your own weapons’’ moments! lol

Then all roads led for a whole week to Camden’s legendary Jazz Café for the much-awaited Cameo shows. I realised I’d been attending shows there now for 20 years and nothings changed in there. Same stage, same bar, same food on the menu. But it’s good and works.
Cameo were on fire! All their shows were sold out and nothing disappointed. Lead man known worldwide for his bright red cod piece- Larry Blackmon and the main vocalist Tomi were as strong as they ever were. The whole band was tight, sounded well rehearsed (the drummers solo wa impressive as hell!) and exactly as they did on record of not stronger. The members all dressed up in an array of crazy masks and capes as brilliant as Gene Simmons and Kiss costumes, and of course we all cheered when Larry took his place onstage with leather trousers and codpiece. All the press had been warned earlier to refer to him only as ‘’Mister Blackmon’’. Oh how I laughed! A male diva in an ocean of females. Hilarious! Also- as mister Blackmon walked past my dinner table, my industry pals and I gawped as we took in the size of his quite rotund, protruding butt. Honesty-it’s the biggest, juiciest ass on a male I’ve ever seen!
Mister Blackmon seemed a lot more serious than you’d imagine and warned his fans in the audience that they had better ‘’Buy Cameo’s next release, don’t download it for free or live music will cease to exist!’’. His rapping was as sick as ever. I realized he had been rapping with a charismatic flow hotter than most rappers had even been born!
He did make me laugh as he sternly informed the crowd ‘’A lot of people come up here and talk shit but I wanna tell u I really love you!’’.
The band performed all the classics like ‘’single life’’ and ‘’she’s strange’’ and ‘’candy’’. Candy was an eye opener as I imagined the whole crowd would be rocking and performing the now associated candy dance to it. But they didn’t. We then realized that the demographic in the show were older than the current clubbing generation and these oldies probably didn’t realize that the electric slide was now the ‘’candy dance’’. Halfway through the song mister Blackmon asked ‘’what happened to the electric slide?’’ Quick as a flash, determined not to let the teamuk side down, myself and my peps including BBCs Jay Davidson and Adidas boss Paola Lucktung sprinted down the stairs to the ground floor, pushed and weaved our way to the front of the crowd and led the dance troupe. It wasn’t the best exhibition of London showing what it’s got but was certainly an eye opener of how unconnected the oldies can become so fast!
All was okay with the crowd though when the Cameo classic “Hanging downtown” reminded the oldies of their 2-step favourite. They all danced in unison reminiscing about Sunday early morning scrubbing up in a party in their youth (and I don’t mean washing plates after food!).
Overall it was refreshing that the whole band took on lead on vocals and speaking throughout the show and of course when my fave ‘’ Word up’’ started, I literally sang at the top of my lungs and bounded around the top floor balcony bumping people like a monkey!. Come back again cameo- the people need more nights like this!

JASMINE’S JUICE featuring RUMFEST and Omotola’s film premier for AMINA!

JASMINE AT RUMFEST.

Spend your social time with winners is one of the best pieces of advice my dad ever gave me.
Luckily my friends are an ambitious pro socially minded bunch so lunches and dinners are as much about catching up on personal lives as well as connecting our various career projects and making our networks and brands bigger. This week I caught up with a family member who’s an accountant for a big movie company and shrieked at him and my aunt until he promised me James bond film premier tickets. I met BBC Radio London’s most dynamic broadcaster Eddie Nestor for lunch and strong armed him into giving yet more young journalists a break in radio, I met up with international model Rachel Ritfeld for dinner where I convinced her to speak to reporters about the fashion industry and body image.
Next, over dinner, I convinced Sandra Fearon who runs body image London to come into the media Trust and give mentoring sessions and workshops to young disadvantaged youth about grooming and appearance in the workplace, then I called THE VOICE editors and begged them to pop in and give feedback to the new LONDON360 reporters about print press.

RUMFEST CEO / RUM AMBASSADOR IAN BURRELL WITH HIS BROTHER.
My next trip was to London’s Excel Centre in the docklands for the much anticipated annual Rumfest where Saturday was so sold out it was heaving like carnival and Sunday was as manic but better for me as I could have at least a square metres circumference around me to breath. The venue was full of rum enthusiasts and taste connoisseurs who were holding out their complimentary rum glasses for shots and cocktails at more than 40 stands promoting rum from across the globe.
As soon as I arrived I was greeted by Rumfest CEO’s Ian Burrell and his siblings; sister Sam and brother. Immediately after checking out the always fabulous goody bag that he handed to us (which this year included a soca mix cd) , we saw a tall gent who was tasting rum and my mate excited nudged me going ‘’ooh look it’s Patrick Vieira!’’ Patrick was standing drinking and chatting with another tall gent and my mate excitedly squealed ‘’and he’s with Mikaël Silvestre!’’

PATRICK VIEIRA AND MIKAEL SILVESTRE AT RUMFEST.

As you can imagine all of this went totally over my no football knowing head until music manager Richard Pascoe, who working in the vicinity, had a quiet word in my ear ‘’Jas don’t you recall when you were on CHOICEFM with George Kay-George taught you a football chant-it was the one for Vieira’’. It all came flooding back! George used to make me chant ‘’Vieira whoa oh oh oh oh, he comes from Senegal, her plays for arsenal’’ every Friday live on air. As this was the only thing I could think of sharing with him I felt it best to let it go, nod hello, and keep it moving.
We saw excited inebriated punters taking excited photos with the skimpy costumed carnival dancers (how much do they pay people to wear those?) interestingly this time it was just about leering at the skimpy girls in costume as they had male models too. I noted that whilst I had imagined there would be a dominance of men at the event that it was pretty 50-50 with the ladies in full effect too!
In the final round of the rum-mixing event I witnessed a number of big names from that world demonstrate rum cocktails with interesting mixtures including tamarind, chocolate and more. I was most surprised to see a representative from music legend Chris Blackwell’s rum company attend too. I had no idea this music man (who helped launch Bob Marley, Grace Jones and U2) also owned a rum brand called Blackwell’s!. I caught up with the mixologist (get me with the proper jargon!), who told me ‘’Chris Blackwell is an international music icon, entrepreneur and cultural pioneer. His reputation and lifestyle are the inspiration behind the brand, and he is proud to offer the best Jamaica has to offer. Chris hails from one of its oldest merchant families, the Lindo family, who first came to the island in 1625. His grandfather owned J. Wray & Nephew—renowned for distilling the best rum in Jamaica. Chris continues in the family tradition with the introduction of Blackwell Fine Jamaican Rum, developed from his own recipe. With his music label, Island Records, Chris brought the best of Jamaican reggae to the world, now he brings you the finest Jamaican rum, made from Jamaican sugar cane and distilled by Jamaican workers. This isn’t a simple light rum, Blackwell Rum, known by Jamaicans as Black Gold, is colourful, rich and complex, like the spirit of this magical island’’.

JASMINE WITH RASTAMOUSE CREATOR MICHAEL DE SOUZA AT RUMFEST.
Just as I was making my way around the venue clocking merry old dudes, classy young bar owners, ladies holding their own up against the male swiggers I bumped into Rastamouse creator Michael de Souza whom I spoke to about how the children’s cartoon is doing and when it might be aired in the Caribbean. He revealed that they are indeed working on it.
As the designated car driver on the day I sampled a couple of cocktails before filling my shopping bag with one of my main loves in life- hot pepper sauce- which was being sold at one of the stalls too. Good thing too as at the end of the day I used a whole bottle on my roast chicken dinner just up the road.

Finally I headed off to Leicester square for my first ever Nollywood style film premier of AMINA. It was the movie Amina starring Nigeria’s biggest actress- superstar Omotola (whom I’d had the please of having dinner with a few weeks ago). The red carpet actually took 2 whole hours with TV and radio crews jostling for space amongst the countless African beauties in long embellished gowns and sexy frocks in an array of colours and headdresses. Many columnists were hanging around my the press boards hoping to grab a quick photo with Omotola before the film began but when the PR team advised us she hadn’t even left the hotel yet we decided we’d better take our seats. In the house were names like 400 metre athlete and Olympian Christine Ohuruogu. I was seated right behind English rapper/ actor Kano and his lady (who played a great role as the daughter in the film), so we giggled about how sharp his shape up was. I was sitting in between 23 males who were sharing a bucket of popcorn so it looked as if I was eating both theirs and my bucket.in case you spot any photos of Kano with me in the background, to clarify-mine was the small one!
The film was set in the UK and covers the story of Amina-a young girl brought up in a family where the father is violent and abusive. Amina’ tells the story of a young woman (Omotola) who, devastated by a series of life changing events, especially teenage pregnancy, suffers a total breakdown.
Her story develops and takes twists and turns until eventually she is institutionalised in a mental hospital. The film clearly had good intentions with its message and storyline and Nigerian actress Omotola was very believable and played her role well and with integrity. However the film was let down by things that were basics such as casting and focus pulling. Many scenes in the film had dodgy camera shots with focus unclear. Casting was questionable. First the adult character of Amina that Omotola plays has a strong African accent but the actress playing her in her youth was a straight up British cockney that looked nothing like her. Her mother was started off as a Jamaican and then seemed to take on African characteristics? Some scenes that were supposed to be set in the eighties and nineties had close ups on cars with 2011 tax discs! All these errors led to amusement and detracted from the film, which was a pity. Overall it was a good film with a serious message and dubious comedy moments which I’m not totally sure were intentional!
Now from one premier to another, I’m off to have a mani-pedi, hair done, make up done, personal trainer to get my silhouette into shape-as I’m off to…the James Bond premier!

JASMINE’S JUICE featuring NeYo and An Evening with Jay Sean.

JASMINE WITH NE YO AT HIS MALIBU RED PARTY SHOW.
On a torrentially wet weekday evening in the centre of London when the streets were empty, miserable and cold a nightclub was full and sweaty at 7pm. loads of Ne Yo fans had gathered at an intimate performance by the king of melody which was in association with his new beverage Malibu Red. The venue was Salon in W1 which if you’re as old as me can recall raving at when it was called both Legends and Samantha’s!

Every urban music act worth their salt now have a liquid they insist on promoting to beef up their already inflated salary and whilst Puffy pushes Ciroc, Jay Z pushes Ace Of Spades champagne, Ne Yo drink of choice is Malibu Red. Throughout the evening a variety of cocktails were enjoyed-they tasted good too. Ne Yo jumped onstage in his trademark black suit, white shirt and trilby costume to an audience of what seemed to be 98% ladies all hot and excited about the superstar act. Halfway through his set he declared he was overheating and after yells of ‘’strip’’ from the ladies, obliged by removing both his jacket and shirt to reveal….nope…not a ripped body…but a t shirt! How many layers!
He did give the pervy ladies what they came for by proving there was a hot ripped body underneath with the expected and now obligatory Peter Andre t-shirt lift.
Afterwards loads of fans including singers Alexandra Burke and Preeya Kalidas queued to grab a pic with him as I sat with his right hand man/ tour manager Ronnie Stephenson and laughed at how far Ne Yo had come in a few years after taking the risk to go from already successful songwriter to stage star! Hey if you don’t try it, it wont happen!.

JASMINE WITH JAY SEAN AT ”AT EVENING WITH JAY SEAN”
From one very talented male music act to another…
Next I made my way to the Hilton hotel in Wembley to spend An Evening with Jay Sean. Don’t jump to any conclusions it wasn’t just us. It was a packed rooftop bar full of movers and shakers from the Indian community. The event was thrown by the UK Asian music awards and saw other stars like Adam Deacon and Preeya Kalidas turn out in support of their peer Jay. The evening started with a heaving red carpet area where TV and radio crews were jostling for space alongside staff from MTV, record labels, bloggers, Asian woman magazine crew and a number of new music acts to speak to the celebs attending. Champagne trays were being passed around and there was a genuine feel-good vibe in the air as all present were here to celebrate a man who’s succeeded against the odds. Jay Sean was being honoured by Asian music awards for being their most celebrated artist over the past decade.

JASMINE WITH ACTRESS/SINGER PREEYA.
Actress/ singer Preeya was rocking a big faux fur coat, her signature tights pants and high platforms, Prince’s manager Kiran Sharma was warm in a roll neck burgundy sweater dress, also in attendance were a number of big Asian acts like Juggy D, Adam Deacon was smart casual whilst his manager Dhanny rocked a suit and quiff!
Jay Sean arrived and the red carpet exploded in excitement. He was suited up in a black number whilst his lady wifey Thara looked stunning in a green Victoria Beckham-esque dress? Once all the red carpet interviews and networking were over the audience took to their seats as BBC ASIAN NETWORK breakfast show presenter Tommy Sandhu lead Jay through a very entertaining interview onstage. The conversation flowed, the information was intriguing and the laughs were aplenty. It made me wonder why mainstream UK TV hadn’t snapped up Jay Sean to appear on mainstream shows like the X Factor and Jonathan Ross show. I mean, this guy has achieved things not even Robbie Williams has abroad! He has had USA number 1 singles and albums, broken all download records, had its in every continent and is treated like a superstar across the globe so why not England?

JASMINE WITH ACTOR ADAM DEACON.
During the interview Jays family and friends were all present in the audience and Jay referred to them often. He added that his Mum dad grandma and best mates have supported his musical dreams since he was13 years old. Furthermore, he revealed that on trips back home to London he ‘’always stay at home with my mum and dad- why would I want a hotel? Mums is like a hotel when I’m home!’’ Jays mum looked embarrassed as he hot her up revealing ‘’ mum asks how are your label mates? That little man?’’ I reply ‘’ Mum do u mean Lil Wayne LOL?’’. And Jay’s dad can’t get with the whole YMCMB (young money cash money billionaires) tagline and refers to his label as ‘’money money’’. LOL

He has so far won 15 ASIAN MUSIC AWARDS, which is a record. Jay gushed ‘‘the reason AMAs is really important to us here is as it acknowledgment that we as young Asian musicians are doing something well. It’s like a teacher praising your work at school. Someone has to do it if no one else will. We can then continue knowing we’re doing the right thing’’ I will feel blessed when Imagine a few years on when peeps say “I grew up on your music” how old will I feel! I remember when the Asian underground music movement was happening. What we have now n the bangra scene is really unique. Now our music acts are getting younger”.

He explained that he was drawn to R&B, soul and hip-hop via his aunts playing Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder music whilst he was a kid attending Latimer Upper School. He looked touched as he said that his grandparents had worked hard doing menial jobs so that their children and grandchildren didn’t have to go through life struggling- it was his granddad who used to be singer in family. His father was a gifted county cricket player but wasn’t able to follow that dream through, as he wanted to work hard so Jay and his siblings had a comfortable life.
Jay also added that his dad always said there were only 2 things to decide in his life to stay focused; his decision for a lifelong partner and career choice. That’s those 2 boxes ticked then! He did reveal he’s really trying to break the film arena too but alas after a few auditions still hasn’t been cast but will continue trying. (See that never giving up attitude right there?)
We laughed as he recalled how when he used to rap at the age of 12 his mum didn’t like it, as she couldn’t understand anything he said and pleaded with him to do something she understood.
Jay was in the UK for a rare few days as he was about to board a plane for japan and Australia the next morning to perform on Australia’s X Factor. He sighed ‘’A lot of people don’t realize how many hours goes into this. I’m on a plane every 3 or 4 days. I’m off to japan tomorrow, performing in Australia where I can’t believe I’m so popular! I wrote a song for an Australian group- a boy band called “Justice Crew” which went to no1! And that stuff makes a lot of money so I love song writing for other artists like JLS too’’.
I love Jay’s humbleness LOL. He laughed ‘’It still shocks me when 20,000 people in Madison Square Garden are singing back my words to me- it just blows me away man. Performing with Alicia Keys was nerve racking. It was one of my finest moments. I pinched myself. We both work on the Keep a Child Alive charity”

Jay answered questions from the audience at the end so I asked him whether even though England states it is a very diverse multicultural and open inclusive society, whether the British media just don’t acknowledge his vast achievements globally?
He replied ‘’ I love representing this genre, my race and everything. That means more to me than trying to make money. That keeps me inspired. A lot of uk media that wrote me off early on and didn’t support me often pretend they do and now greet me with open arms but I don’t let that stuff get to me. I am a British music act. Not an Asian music act. I have competed with the best and done quite well-it would be nice to receive that praise but it is what it is’
So I end this weeks column asking in the same way that young black British acts weren’t let through the door and taken seriously a few years ago-are the current young Asian generation in the same place? Will record labels open their eyes to just how many Indian music acts are out there and how much money and spending power their community has? Why aren’t the UK mainstream media not shouting about Jay Sean- he’s had numerous number 1 hits and is a global superstar-bigger than Take That were internationally…answers on a postcard, e mail, carrier pigeon, twitter …all appreciated!

JASMINE’S JUICE featuring SEANI B, ISIS PRISON BAFTA NIGHT and NAS!

JASMINE WITH BIRTHDAY BOY-DJ SEANIE B AND JAY DAVIDSON(BBC).

This week I’ve watched new up and coming London act Ruby Goe at her live gig at Camden’s infamous Barfly venue, accompanied superstar Jay Sean and his missus to a private intimate soiree thrown by the Asian Music Awards (more on that next week!) and old skool Radio1Xtra DJ Seani B’s old skool themed birthday party in Acton. As I rolled up I could immediately see what kind of party this would be. At midnight the club was empty with no queue outside. By 12,30am there were 300 people all trying to get in dressed in garms that were so outrageous and authentic I did wonder whether it was costume or their everyday garms? (Yep- I’m going straight to hell for that judgement LOL!). The party was popping from the get go. It was pure hood. Really old skool hood outfits, pure dance offs, shoes off gyrating and a different music set and DJ every 30 minutes so we heard swing beat, R&B, hip-hop, jungle, drum & bass, raga, dancehall, bashment and more. DJ’s included legends from Rampage sound system- Mike Anthony and psycho. Every time someone announced another birthday girl in the house the sparklers, goodie bags and Krispy kreme doughnut boxes appeared! Seani appeared in his Will Smith looking house party outfit of bright orange cap and shorts with a royal blue preppy blazer and announced that ‘’the future is bright the future is orange-via Primark’’! He then proceeded to work the party into a frenzy until 6am whilst knocking back copious amounts of pink champagne and Hennessey before making what he called ‘’ a documentary’’ which saw him yelling a variety of hilarious quotes to everyone’s mobile phones which were gleefully recording him to play back to him when sober!. I called it from the start. Hood! LOL. Happy birthday Seani!

JASMINE AT THE ISIS BAFTA SCREENING WITH FORMER YOUNG OFFENDER SHANE, ISIS PRISON GUVNOR GRAHAME HAWKINGS AND HACKNEY HEROINE PAULINE PEARCE.
Next I attended a film screening and post film panel debate at BAFTA in Piccadilly to view the short film that young offenders in ISIS prison in South London had scripted and help make called ‘’Getting Clean’’. It was a short comedy about a prisoner’s experience of society upon release and was very well written and entertaining. It made me wonder whether the public would ever be open to a prisoner’s film festival? In attendance were tastemakers, journalists, and prison staff, bloggers and young writers. The debate was lively, passionate and engaging. The panel also included Shane Boothe, Entrepreneur and ex-young offender , Niall Bryant, Head of Education, ISIS Young Offenders Institute , Pauline Pearce, Getting Clean actor and ‘Hackney Heroine’ of the 2012 riots , Steve Lennon, Film Producer and Project Tutor , Jason Warr, Programme Manager and Research Coordinator at User Voice.
The teams that had helped the film come together came from LIVITY (an organisation that helps engage young people), the big lottery and of course prison senior heads. Whilst the experience is invaluable for prisoners as it helps engage them, give them a positive focus, build their confidence, faith in their futures and team work, I did ponder about its ultimate potential…. whether with many employers thinking that ex criminals aren’t really employable and trustworthy, now that every company is doing CRB checks regardless of whether the staff member is working with young/ vulnerable people, how are the ex offenders ever going to find work and get that break? I wanted to ask panel host David Calhoun (from Time Out magazines film department) whether he would put his money where his mouth is and employ an ex offender within his film department but alas didn’t get a chance to.

Next I attended rehearsals for a new TV all women’s talk show called LADIES TALK. Headed up by writer, director and comedienne Angie Le Mar, the cast see’s a panel of ladies including American-British playwright, novelist and critic-Bonnie Greer, TV presenter / producer Jacqui Joseph , Jackie Michael and myself on a regular weekly talk slot on SKY TV where we will be discussing everything under the sun, topical events, saucy anecdotes, tell all stories and more with our weekly celeb guests! Its going to ruffle feathers let me tell you! If the rehearsals area anything to go by you will want to watch and be glued to your TV’s! We will be the better anecdote to loose women and the British even more entertaining version of Americas THE VIEW!

JASMINE WITH GODS SON-NAS!
I ended the week wonderfully when Paola (ADIDAS head honcho-in case you didn’t already know!), sent me some tickets to see my old sparring partner Nasir Jones. We have had many an interview in my MTV days where we would debate long and hard about music, the industry, his issues and life. Nas’ live London show at under the bridge was exactly as he always is-amazing! The venue was absolutely rammed like a New York club used to be back in the days of THE TUNNEL or like the Eminem movie 8 mile for you younger generation that cant relate to the real days of hip hop due to your birth year. It was so crowded in the club that each one of us barely had a 1 square foot of space to stand in such was the excitement to see this rap legend.
Unlike many of his peers who might rely heavily on stage sets, lights and pyrotechnics this was Nas at his usual raw best with a simple juxtaposition of DJ (Green Lantern), decks and his ever-famous ‘One mic’. Luckily for old and new fans he took it all the way back to first album-Illmatic and kept the big hits coming.
When he performed his single about his ex wife-singer Kelis, called ‘’Bye baby’’-(a song so deep and heartfelt where he wears his heart on his sleeve with much vulnerability) …he started talking about Kelis. He shared with us a story about how he had text her suggesting they have sex one last time before splitting. ‘‘Last night I text her saying can we make love just 1 more time but she didn’t answer LOL!’’
However, showing his pain he confessed to the audience ‘‘Ladies-when you got a good man-take care of him, don’t bug out if you messed up-some of you’ll need too much attention’’.
Disappointingly for the crowd, he didn’t perform his diss record to old nemesis Jay Z ‘(’ether’’) even though the crowd were chanting for it. He explained ‘’I’m glad you’re chanting for it, the fact that you’re doing that means I know that hip hop is in your heart, but that was then, this is now’’. We got a real sense of nas having grown up and put childish beefs behind him. Especially as he and jay are business partners and associates now.
Further showing his growth he added ‘’ I’ve come from ‘’life’s a bitch’’ to ‘’life is good’’ so see how my mind-set has changed in 20 years and my journey’’. We nodded. We understood. We chanted alongside him ‘’ Life’s a bitch and then you die, that’s why we get high ‘Cause you never know when you’re gonna go’’.
He kept his love for his family apparent when he performed his song ‘’daughters’’ from new album which talks about how he has to parent his child and includes the lyrics ‘’ They say the coolest playas and foulest heart breakers in the world, God gets us back, he makes us have precious little girls.
nas explained that his daughter Destiny, put a picture of condoms online on her instagram page and Nas was tweeted by fans to ‘’ ‘take care of his business’ understandably Nas was shook and berated his daughter in a song which she hated. Nas laughed as he described how he gave her a public global ass whooping in front of the world in this song that will live forever online and beyond.
He finished by saying he genuinely had a lot of gratitude that he was still playing live shows 2 decades down the line. This really was a once in a lifetime classic Nas show with a mix of both fans from every era as well as songs from each era of his career, clearly demonstrated when he did ‘’You can hate me now’’ and ‘’Made you look’’. People everywhere were slam dancing and I didn’t even have to move as I was being thrown around by the crowds’ momentum!
As my friend the female old skool rapper Cookie (Cookie Crew) told me ‘’that’s was hot! Straight outta the oven hot!’’

JASMINE’S JUICE FEATURING ISIS PRISON, RUM CRUISE AND KOJO’S LONDON COMEDY DATE!

(ALL PICS IN THIS BLOG COURTESY OF RICHARD PASCOE)

JASMINE WITH RUM CRUISE/RUMFEST AMBASSADOR IAN BURRELL AND CARNIVAL GIRLS ON THE RUM CRUISE.
This week I’ve been back in prison for the young offenders prison TV special that London360 reporters are making. I’ve had cocktails with the Arts360 reporters, I attended BAFTA to view the film GETTING CLEAN by my mates across at Livity (a youth organisation that does great things with media and young people!), and ISIS prison and mostly been juggling life’s many bouncing balls! In August, Livity ran a programme of workshops with a group of young men at ISIS Young Offenders Institute aiming to build skills, confidence and awareness of their employment options on release. Subsequently, they formed ‘ISIS Films’, and pitched the idea for a short comedy entitled ‘Getting Clean’. With a little help from award winning film crew volunteers (including director Robert Samuels and actors Pauline Pearce (the ‘Hackney Heroine’) and Darragh Mortell (the Tracy Beaker show)), footage of ‘Getting Clean’ was shot on location and returned to the prison, allowing the group to practice using their editing skills. This screening showcased the creativity and commitment demonstrated by all those involved. It was followed by a panel discussion exploring the challenges and opportunities that rose during the project, and the potential for similar models to be used to tackle reoffending rates in the future. too many of our young people are following negative paths and a disproportionate number are in prison. this event really showed how they changed peoples lives and needs the government to empower more projects like this to give youth a focus, passion and skill for life.

JASMINE WITH BRITISH SUPERMODEL TIA WARD ON THE RUM CRUISE.
It’s very rare these days to find a restaurant that’s reliable, traditional and of the highest standard. Cottons in Camden in a spot that I’ve been visiting for years. It’s renowned in the London entertainment scene for its great food, warm tropical ambience and reliability. Any TV company I’ve ever been at has cottons on speed dial for when celebs want some good old fashioned west Indian food of quality and substance. Unlike many other Caribbean food businesses that open when they like and are dead rude with their service (shout out Roti Hut in Shepherds Bush), not enough seating to always cater for customers (Mr Jerk in W1), food always runs out (Grannies in Dalson)…..Cottons is always open when it says its working hours are, always has everything on the menu and doesn’t serve up curry goat bone curry instead of meat (shout out Cottons in N1-not to be confused with Cottons in Camden-the 2 aren’t related).

CARIBBEAN MEDIA MOGUL DOUGLAS GORDON MAKES DEALS WITH RUM AMBASSADOR IAN BURRELL ON THE RUM CRUISE.
I can call up Cottons manager Ian Burrell and book a last minute table for celebs to come and eat in the private rear seating area like I have done with Black Eyed Peas and Timbaland, or call up last minute with a big order to be delivered to a plush hotel like I’ve done with Mariah and Jay Z, or simply pop in for a last minute cosy dinner for 2 and each time the service is impeccable. So when Ian started his rum ambassador business I knew it would be on another level. A few years down the line, his rum workshops, tastings and festivals are legendary and global. He visits numerous countries where he hosts rum focused events. Ian told me ‘’ Rum is more than just a spirit, it’s a lifestyle. This is why RumFest is a lifestyle show, through the eyes of rum’’.

SOUTH LONDON LADS ENJOY THE CHICKEN WINGS AND RUM COCKTAILS ON THE RUM CRUISE!
His RumCruise on the Thames River is now an annual event that I’ve never been free to attend-until last week. It was the press launch for his annual rum festival- (RumFest), which this year is at The ExCel London, 1 Western Gateway. Royal Victoria Dock. London. E16 1XL, on Saturday 13th & Sunday 14th October 2012. Last year it was at Earls Court and was heaving with a diverse crowd all weekend. You may recall that as well as rum shacks and modern bars with ice sculptures all hosting rum tastings, there were carnival dancers, sound systems, live bands and…the porn legend Ron Jeremy who always attends! I took the day off work to experience the rum cruise and didn’t regret it.

JASMINE WITH RUM CRUISE PARTY PEOPLE INCLUDING ATHLETE TURNED TV MOGUL DU’AINE LADEJO, SINGER DELILAH AND LONDON360 REPORTER ROSA DOHERTY.

SINGER DELILAH WITH HER UNCLE-ATHLETE TURNED MEDIA MOGUL DU’AINE LADEJO.
God ensured the weather was warm and the party was on from 12noon till 4pm. the boat cruised twice the length of the Thames from the docklands, past embankment to Chelsea pier and it was breath taking to see our city from the water. The sound system played sweet summer sounds to the press, friends and family gathered, the carnival costumed ladies served rum cocktails of every coloured variety and danced with party attendees, British supermodel that the press recently became very excited about due to her beauty and brains Tia Ward attended, as did athletic legend now TV star Duaine Ladejo attended with his family, singer Delilah enjoyed the cocktails, singer song writer Michelle Escoffrey danced away, Jamaican media conglomerate Douglas Gordon and family travelled in all the way across the Atlantic to attend, it was a very unique event and a chance to experience the juxtaposition of London and rum in a way never done before-

JASMINE WITH HER LIL NIECE AND CARNIVAL GIRLS ON THE RUM CRUISE.
By the end of the cruise all you could see were chicken bones in empty cocktail glasses, all you could hear was shrieking laughter and song, all you could feel was the vibration of feet on boat as the whole party did the cameo electric slide en masse! The sign of a great afternoon! See you for part 2 this weekend at Rum Fest!

JASMINE WITH COMEDIAN KOJO AND OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALLIST ANTHONY JOSHUA.
Next radio host and comedian Kojo had his London date of his ‘Special Delivery’ comedy tour in Camden hosted by his employers CHOICEFM. On the night he was on fire with his unique wit, freestyle, quick-fire crowd heckling and ‘questions to Kojo’ sections of his show. Olympic gold medallist boxer Anthony Joshua was also in the area with us and had all the young ladies drooling and looking for an excuse to rub past him as they sashayed sexily back and forth. Also In the VIP with me was singer Alexandra Burke who was there with her sister and friends. It was her sister’s birthday and at the end of the night a cake was brought onstage as the 2 sisters wiggled on in their tight foxy dresses and heels to blow out the candles (which Alexandra had forgotten to bring!).

JASMINE’S JUICE featuring SASSY SAS, BASHY FILM ”MY BROTHER THE DEVIL”, MOBO NOMINATONS PARTY, LAPADA ART FAIR!

JASMINE WITH MUSIC/MOVIE MYSTRO- BASHY AT HIS VIP FILM SCREENING FOR ‘MY BROTHER THE DEVIL’. (pic; R.Pascoe)
I like the regular things in my life. I am a Capricorn creature of habit. I like to read the daily papers, have a regular girly night with my ladies and fit in my gym classes. This past month (if you follow me on twitter) you will know that a lady called Saskia (#supersassysas) has been regularly kicking my ass. Hard. She’s my new personal trainer and has my body shook. I used to be a trained ballet dancer and have been fit all my life. My body is flexible, strong and my core strength impressive (even though I do say myself). So when I was offered sessions with Saskia I did think ‘’yeah come on then do your worst!’’ She did. My bones shake slightly every time I see her. She’s broken me down so she knows exactly what my fitness weak points are (crazy cardio) and does these exercises and nothing else. As a dancer that loves the beautiful lines and body mechanics of yoga I like graceful controlled exercise. So Saskia makes me sprint fast and high, do countless burpees (look em up), loads of frogs with my ass down (horrific!) and generally makes my body spasm and ache. Last week she made me do one-legged squats all the way down to the ground holding onto elastic bands to pull myself up- I nearly cried. I love it!

MY LITTLE 2 YEAR OLD TORNADO HOUSE GUEST WEARING ONE OF MANY OF MY SHOES! (pic; J Laurent)
Something else that made me nearly cry was my houseguests this week. My favourite Jamaican family who always look after us when we’re in the Caribbean came to stay for 10 days. Mummy, daddy and 2-year-old gorgeous daughter. 2 year old is the most gorgeous lil girl I think I’ve ever seen-with a personality to match! Like a lil tornado running on Duracell batteries she was up at 7am and asleep shattered at 3am! Being used to diving into her family swimming pool in Jamaica into the strong arms of her warrior physique shaped daddy, she throws herself around everywhere-mostly on her Auntie Jasmine. This part I love. However I should have been more child conscious before her arrival and popped my vast colourful, fancy shoe collection well out of reach because every 2 hours a different pair of my shoes were popped onto Ms Things tiny feet as she strutted into the living room to show us her latest find! – And lord does she have taste-she would always go for the designer brands! One morning I was at work when my other half text me a picture titled ‘’aw cute!’’ It’s a shot of the gorgeous lil tornado wearing my white Chanel shoes peep toes! Trying not to hyperventilate in my meeting I manage to continue talking in what I hoped wasn’t too strained a tone. I reciprocated by having her rock his numerous pairs of pristine never broken in trainers as soon as I got home. He didn’t send me any more photos like that again! The week was mega fun with activities galore (rum cruise on the river-more on that next time, Nando’s , Khans in Westbourne Grove, Richmond, Beaconsfield, Madame Tussauds, SeaWorld aquarium, London eye, London zoo, oxford street, and Primark! lol!) and it taught me a lot about how much more chilled I have become. A few years ago any of that shoe wearing action and pouring my mega expensive Jo Malone rose bath oil straight down the plughole would’ve had me taking faint and stroppy. Now I simply shrugged my shoulders and resigned myself to the fact that in 10 days it would all be back to normal! Come again tornado fam LOL!

JASMINE WITH LOICK ESSIEN AND BASHY AT BASHYS NEW FILM SCREENING FOR ‘MY BROTHER THE DEVIL’. (pic; R Pascoe)
Normal came soon in the form of Bashy who invited me to a VIP screening of his latest film. (I say normal, but he was wearing leopard print furry Adidas trainers that had an actual animal tail on the heels!) -West London swag LOL). He is obviously known as an amazing musician with lyrical skills, a conscious voice, a live performance that’s one of the best of his generation and a lovely well-mannered attitude. He’s pretty big if you know about the UK scene but honestly he should’ve been much bigger years ago. He’s always putting in his time and I know something big is around the corner for him. In the past few years many of his music videos have been mini movies- like Dame Dash used to make for Roc A Fella, or Michael Jackson used to make in his hey day. He’s also starred in real movies in small roles and is very good. His latest film is called MY BROTHER THE DEVIL which is yet another movie in the vein of London’s urban street fiction of violence. This is now a full on film genre. Shall we call it grimy movies? Shall we give Noel Clarke the credit for being the originator? Bashy plays the Mr Big Bad man. The film is gripping and depressing with a clear message for young men on the streets. Full of the usual tales of consequence and social depravity it takes a left turn twist that no one saw coming which shook the audience up, but I must salute the main family of Egyptian origin- all of them were superb!

JASMINE WITH FAZER (N DUBZ), MOBO CEO KANYA KING, TALENT MANAGER / PHOTOGRAPHER RICHARD PASCOE AT THE MOBO NOMINATIONS PARTY AT FLORIDITA. (pic; Paul H)
Straight after the movie, myself, Bashy and many other TeamUK movers and shakers wandered 2 minutes up the road to the MOBO nominations launch party at Wardour Streets Floridita venue was heaving with TeamUK acts, press and wannabee’s from the scene. (You know you’ve been in the game a while when you remember all the other acts that have had parties in the same venue-Usher had an album launch here once when it was still very fab and new!) MOBO head lady Kanya King introduced and told us how excited she was about the awards being in Liverpool again on November 3rd this year on a Saturday for the first time. Radio host Gemma Cairney spoke (think she’s a bad choice at these things- she isn’t known for championing urban acts or seen regularly on the scene the way many of her colleagues are- just my humble opinion). Up and coming acts like Angel and Delilah performed very well. As usual the crowd were very rude and noisy whilst the speakers and performers were onstage. Guests included; Stooshe who looked fab with loads of hair extensions, Tulisa who was very blond and a bit albino looking-she’s much cuter as a brunette, her body did look banging though like you could bounce pennies off it, Sincere-who looks more and more like Nas every day, Angel-who I don’t think has a body part left that isn’t covered in tattoos, Preeya Kalidas in a very Amy Winehouse hairstyle, Jessie ware looked as serious and as traumatised as usual, DJ Ironik was colourful and sweet as ever, Fazer looked dashing but there were some awkward sweat patches under his armpits at one point-nerves about bumping intonex Tulia or just sweaty?, pretty Cleo Sol had a long, furry ,pink thing hanging off her all night-I was going to kill it but feared for the animal rights people, Rebecca Ferguson looked scarily like she’d tried to clone herself into a unification of Beyonce and Leona Lewis, Delilah sounded wonderful and really stood out with many commenting on what natural style she had, Island Records table looked very slick and powerful headed up by Tinchy and head honcho Darcus, Amy Winehouse god daughter Dionne Bromfield stayed close to her boss Darcus all night , Misha B resembled a very young Chaka Khan and sounded strong vocally too and DJ Swerve held it all together by spinning on the decks. A fun night!

A DOUBLE SIZED GUN AT THE LAPADA ART AND ANTIQUES FAIR IN BERKLEY SQUARE, W1. (PIC; Karen Palmer)
More formal soirees next included attending BBC head Mark Thompson’s leaving do at Broadcasting House, then to Sadlers Wells for the Sony event where head Nick Gatfield spoke proudly of his upcoming acts and positively gushed about his boy band One Direction!
Then The Earl Howe, president, and the lord Chadlington invited us to the Lapada Arts and Antiques fair in a marquee in Berkley Square, W1. (http://www.hatchwellantiques.co.uk/antique_furniture/?cat=2&mcat=1 )
When my friend Karen Palmer (formally Jet Star Records / now parkour interactive visual creative director), invited me to accompany her we both imagined an actual tent like the ones of our youth erected in Ealing Park for the local fair. This, readers, was a mansion with 3 huge ballrooms, copious amounts of champagne and mint mojitos and swarms of London’s most wealthy old money. You could practically taste and smell the good breeding. Ladies of all ages were rocking pearls, Chanel suits and sophisticated flat moccasins or loafers or classic black stilettos, whilst the men all looked like they stepped off the ralph Lauren catwalk-even really elderly gents with swish cravats and neck scarves. They all had a unified look about them. They were a community that clearly socialised together often and were comfortable in their status. There were around 200 stalls with antiques, sculptures, antique jewellery, artwork both classic and modern, furniture worth thousands- it all made sense now. I’d always wondered where the very wealthy found these old oak tables, chairs, paintings that looked like they belonged in a museum and so on. It was fascinating. I was as gripped by the attendees outfits as I was the artwork!. Elderly ladies with striking unusual neckpieces, very elegantly dressed folk who didn’t have to bling to show their sophistication. Young supermodel looking privately educated ladies who had clearly been to finishing school and did the St Barts and Monte Carlo calendars annually! It was lie being given an access all areas pass to a Jackie Collins book!
My favourite collection was called air art by Hatchwell Antiques (http://www.lapadalondon.com/art-and-antiques/d/ejection-seat-by-martin-baker/109720 ) that make furniture from old discarded aeroplane parts like propellers, engines, ejector seats and more- it was striking but way to expensive for my meagre purse. About 10 years ago Alan Hatchwell started to sell exciting aircraft items (now referred to collectively as aeronautica) that work amazingly well as decorative items, and are also sought after by collectors. Alan has a love of aeroplanes so this is an interesting way to indulge his interest and certainly added an unusual range of works to the LAPADA Fair. I felt like id really managed to get my culture swerve on- if only I were wealthy enough to buy this art. Someone famous-Andy Warhol I think- once said that art is what you can get away with, in which case I’m off to indulge in some sofa lying art!.

JASMINE’S JUICE featuring ISIS and DYNAMO!

JASMINE WITH THE VERY UNIQUE TRAIL BLAZER THAT IS DYNAMO!
My reporters at London360 are currently finishing of an all-exclusive prison special about a young offenders institute called ISIS, which rehabilitates and trains up young men in prison. Many of the young men interviewed are very lost youngsters who simply didn’t have the best starts or breaks in life and much of their surroundings are responsible for their consequent actions and life choices. Growing up in disadvantaged areas, having one parent, having bad parenting, feeling responsible for their siblings, wanting to fit into gangs as they have no family at home, being lured into gang families by local hoodlums recruiting young criminals, having a lack of hope for the future, being exposed to a positive life, having positive people in their lives. If you only have to deal with one of these facts you might get through fine with other factors involved, but mash together even just 2/3 of them and the potential for falling into the wrong side is extremely likely. If we leave these young men in prison to rot away and strengthen prison gang ties we are only creating a vicious cycle that affects us all in society. At ISIS the prisoners are trained in a wide variety of skills like barbering, media production, cookery, motor vehicle maintenance, DIY, waste management, plumbing, in house Samaritans, all academic subjects and more. Once they leave and finish their sentence they attend a resettlement program. All this leads to us having less angry, desperate men being thrown back into society and makes the community a nicer place for us all.
The TV special will be on air mid October- I’ll keep you updated!.

When I think of young men that have told me that they had a positive strong male role model in their life-I always remember TV magician dynamo. I recall him years ago telling me about his grand father who had mentored him and his magic skills to distract bullies at his Bradford school. Dynamo adored his granddad and was extremely lucky to have a positive, male man looking out for him. Dynamo continues this pro-social part of his life by giving back when he can. As well as travelling the world performing his magic for celebs and Joe public, he’s always raising money and awareness for charities like the princes trust and cancer research amongst others.
Many moons ago whilst I was at MTV he and his manager met with me to try and get a TV show. I had always admired his skill and well-mannered attitude but wasn’t sure I could justify a magician on a music channel or have the first clue about how to physically film magic tricks. I wasn’t sure I could convince my bosses or myself it was relevant over a music show. Most people say they don’t have any regrets. I think that’s crap. We all have regrets and I’m grown enough to state mine. I now regret that I didn’t fight harder to make it happen as I can see why he’s very a part of this whole new recent #TEAMUK generation. Talent is talent now whether you’re a rapper; footballer, dancer, Olympian or writer and I can see that dynamo would’ve fitted right in!
Of course dynamo being a winner persevered with his always loyal and quietly strong manger Dan and so currently they can be seen on the second series of ‘Magician: Impossible’ at 9pm on Thursdays on Watch (SKY / VIRGIN) and it’s doing pretty good. Dynamo recently sat down with me to reminisce and smile at his achievements thus far
‘’ First episode, I think we got three point seven million viewers. It’s gone a bit crazy to be honest, it’s been a mad year. You know, I went from walking across the River Thames to getting mobbed outside HMV when I did a DVD signing. SO, yeah, I’m causing magic and hysteria everywhere I go’’.
I remember seeing dynamo pop up on music acts tours whilst I was filming shows like MTV DIARY and MAKING THE VIDEO and he nods as he admits ‘’ I’ve performed magic to quite a lot of people over the years, from, royalty like Prince Charles, to hip-hop royalty like Jay-Z. Most recently in my series I’ve stepped away from performing for the celebrities so much, because I wanted to capture the essence of the real people and the everyday man. We went out to Rio and was performing magic in the Favelas and with the street kids, and these kids, half of them don’t even have TV’s, so when you perform magic their faces light up, their eyes, like they’ve seen the most amazing thing they’ve ever seen in their lives, and for me right now, that’s what it’s about, it’s about capturing that moment of wonder, not just, a-listers, because, at the end of the day, I get to travel the world, putting smiles on peoples’ faces, and amazing them, and it’s not just about the A-listers and the celebrities, it’s about everyone’’.

Dynamo always gives credit where its due and revealed that it was a charity that helped him in the first place which is why he is so charity focused ‘’Well, without the princes trust giving me money in the first place, they gave me two thousand pounds, I wouldn’t have been able to get a camcorder or a laptop to go start filming all my videos, so then you never would’ve seen my things on YouTube or on the TV show, so, for me, it started it all, and I wouldn’t be where I am without them. And I think, there are thousands of, young people out there, who need that support, who are not getting it from other places. So for me it was the most important thing that ever happened to me, and I’m pretty sure that anyone else out there who’s been helped by them would say the same’’.

When I’ve seen dynamo perform to celebs, lords, politicians or your average man on the street my favourite thing is to watch their reaction which can range from joy, wonder to shock and fear!, dynamo laughs ‘’I most enjoy the reaction when I’m performing, you never know how people are going to react, some people faint, some people run away from me scared, some people are just gobsmacked like (facially gestures) they don’t say much for a long time. it’s different every time, so it never gets boring, I think if you watch the shows or watch any of my videos or me performing, even you can appreciate why the reaction would give me a buzz, cause often, you’ll find, it’s what you find amazing about it as well’’.

Of course no chat with this young star would be complete without him mentioning his greatest role model ‘’ as you already know when I grew up, my main role model for me was my grandpa, he was a legend in my life, still is, it was actually his birthday yesterday but he’s passed away earlier on in the year and it was a sad time, but, you know, I kind of celebrate his life every year now. And without him I probably wouldn’t be a magician, wouldn’t have the confidence in myself to keep pursuing this crazy career that I’ve endeavoured on, there’s people in areas that I grew up in, who are probably serving time in jail, who are probably not really doing what they need to be doing to have a successful career in life, I was lucky to have grandpa’’.

When we spoke to dynamo about our current young offender special about prison rehabilitation he said ‘’I think it would be unfair, to let people sit there to rot, obviously each case is different, but we are all human at the end of the day, and we all do make mistakes, some mistakes are far worse than others, and I think they get dealt with accordingly, but I think that at a young age it’s very easy to get caught up in the trappings of petty crime. There are more role models out there that they see doing negative stuff, than there are in their community so they’re likely to see a way of making a quick buck, they see a quick way out of their estate and they often try to go down that path but they don’t understand the consequences it could lead them to. so I think if you go in there, and they’re given the right direction whilst they’re inside, then at least it gives them a chance to redeem themselves, but also a chance for them to come out and have a good life and do positive for the community’’.

Dynamo himself grew up without his father there and admitted ‘’I think for me, because I only really had my grandpa as the male role model, I don’t fully understand what I’ve missed, but, you know, it’s hard for me to really say what it would’ve been like to have my dad around, cause he just wasn’t there. Maybe a better sense of direction, I would’ve have been allowed to be a kid for a bit longer, and not have to do all things, like look after my mom .So I think, not having my father around, not having a positive role model early on, stopped me from having the childhood that I probably needed’’.

On that note we agreed to cherish the positive people in our lives and let them know before its too late what they have meant to us! YOLO!

JASMINE’S JUICE featuring BAD 25 and KOJO LAUNCH PARTY!

JASMINE AT THE MICHAEL JACKSON BAD 25 FILM PREMIERE WITH SPIKE LEE.(pic – Paul Hampartsoumian)
Last weekend Sony Music threw a bash to celebrate their old act Michael Jackson’s legendary album Bad and hip hop photographer to the stars Paul Hampartsoumian ,rounded up a huge who’s who list of #TEAMUK movers and shakers to enjoy the lovely Sunday afternoon matinee premiere. The event was called Bad 25- 25 years after Bad came out. The event was a film made by the chosen director Spike Lee who attended to introduce the film and partake in a short question and answer session post film. Spike was granted exclusive access to all Michael Jacksons estates footage of him over the years documenting the making of most of the Bad albums videos and songs. There were even whole sections of Michael in the studio with various singers and producers like Siedah Garrett and Quincy jones.
Footage of Michael behind the scenes is extremely rare and fascinating to watch, as he was so private.
Bad gave Michael 9 no 1 singles, it had 40million in album sales, and the tour broke all records by being seen by 4.4 mill people across 2 years. It was the first live music concert my dad ever took me to at Wembley.
Spike turned up to greet this specially invited audience at the Odeon Leicester square wearing a classic MJ tee shirt, White tracksuit top, his now classic fisherman hat, specs and sneakers.
The film speaks to all those in Michaels life from the musicians, studio session players, singers, fellow dancers and performers like Jeffrey Daniels who taught him the moonwalk, singers and song writers, writers, record label heads, his music friends like Mariah Carey and Sheryl Crow, younger acts that were influenced by MJ like Chris Brown and Kanye.
The film was interesting in so many ways. MJ refused to refer to his music videos as such and always called them ‘’short films’’. You could tell it was indoctrinated into his entourage’s minds too. The same way Mariah refers to her birthday as an anniversary. The rivalry between MJ and Prince and MJ and Stevie Wonder were documented.
One story tells of when MJ and Prince met. MJ was convinced that a box that Prince had bought along with him had a voodoo spell that would affect MJ so he avoided it and him thereafter. In another scene we see a very young Michael and Stevie persuaded to sing a duet together. They were both bemused on camera and trying to out sing each other with their respective styles to a song that someone else had written. It was a hot mess and they both seemed to know it!
The hard work MJ did spending hour after hour watching all the old classic greats like Bob Fosse etc to influence his stage routines and costumes were amazing. He wrote notes to himself that were shown in the film. Notes that said things like ‘’watch the best, work harder than them to be the best’’.
There were sad poignant moments as well as hilariously funny sections of the films such as scenes showing MJ dressing up in disguises to go out in public without drawing attention to him. He looked like he had a lot of fun dressing up as a tramp or old man. He even dressed as a Jehovah’s Witness and knocked on doors! Were you one of the people that slammed your door in his face?
The film is amazing. Its beautiful that the family and his estate have allowed the world to see more of what this fascinating humans private life was like.

RICKY NORWOOD (FAT BOY-EASTENDERS), WRETCH 32 AND KOJO AT KOJO’S DVD LAUNCH PARTY!
Comedy king Kojo threw a VIP invite only party for his DVD launch. He performed a great live show not long ago at Hackney Empire and this weeks DVD launch was the show plus extra backstage moments. The DVD was the 1hr show with extended footage from the MTV Base show. Loads of DVD’s were sold and signed on the night by Kojo. The launch night was full of the scenes movers and shakers from both the comedy and music world that Kojo straddles. It was a fun night! Attended by Wretch 32, Misha B, Mclean, Ricky (Fat Boy from Eastenders), Perri Shakes Drayton, Kyra and Loik Essien to name a few.

JASMINE WITH KOJO!
Kojo’s about to head on his first UK tour called “Special Delivery” where he’s performing in 9 cities and planning an epic show next year. So with Christmas coming if your family loves to watch comedy skewed to an ethnic urban audience this would be a great gift buy someone!

JASMINE WITH THE EVER FUN, ALWAYS POSITIVE ALAN CARR!
All this fun isn’t very fun right now as my dads still unwell and hospitalized, but it is keeping me sane and otherwise distracted some of the time. He went in with a heart attack, sleep apnea, respiratory issues and a dislocated shoulder. He has now had all those get more severe and better up and down depending on what day it is. He also caught a hospital blood infection called sepsis, which can be deadly. One day he’s alert enough to demand his coffee and daily guardian newspaper, the next he’s barely conscious and screaming in pain! So it’s a rollercoaster of emotion and exhaustion right now but I know my life has been so blessed until now, that I know life has pain to give and this is my painful time. I am accepting and dealing and embracing. My family, friends and industry family (too many to mention including Lord Paul Boateng, Kojo, the mad Alan Carr and more) have been so attentive and kind. I really can’t ask for any more. Thank you God.
