One beautifully hot evening, Electric Lady Janelle Monae took over the London skyline in an evening’s performance showcase at the new hotspot for the music industry-the Radio Bar at the ME Hotel. Over looking St Paul’s and the Thames, Janelle welcomed us all to her rooftop showcase ,where she encouraged guests to kick off their shoes and party with her and her team. ‘’It would mean a lot to me if you’d take your shoes off on the grass, this is the American south in London. Immerse yourself! To be really victorious u have to find pleasure in the small things” LOL.

Janelle was born and bred in Kansas, and like her homie Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz ,really did take the guests to a dreamlike state of happiness with her set, which was infectiously fun and bubbly. The new music reminded me of a mix between Andre 3000, Dinah Washington and Bruno Mars. It was happy. Much needed in todays doom led, materialistic crap that’s often in the charts.

As the champagne, wine and out of control nibbles (mash, steak, curried cauliflower, chicken skewers, mini burgers) were passed around on silver platters, Janelle served up a set worthy of a full on arena gig. Dressed in black patent loafers, trousers, braces and bowler hat with white shirt and black and white dog tooth checked blazer, her rat pack look started neat and groomed before she unleashed her electric dancing and wilding out onstage which saw the perfectly coiffed hair flung around and falling everywhere!

Janelle spoke about her love of art and her paintings. She has a painting of an “Electric lady” and with that title wants to create a label that defies the ‘modelisation’ of women. She explained to us that her new album carries universal stories in unforgettable ways. She was particularly proud of having produced one of her heroine’s Erykah Badu.

THE BEST MOMENT AT CHIME FOR CHANGE WAS THE J LO/MARY J DUET-UNEXPECTED AND UNIQUE!

CHIME FOR CHANGE!
The massive Chime for change show at Twickenham stadium was a huge deal! Very reminiscent of Live 8 decades ago it had a stellar a list line up of music talent that was well worth the money 40,000 ticket buyers paid. The show was to bring awareness to female issues globally. Gucci has announced a global fundraising campaign for women and girls who are victims of gender inequality, with a focus on pushing equal access to education, health and justice. Areas such as female health, education, safety and more were highlighted by a host of stars including Madonna, Jada Pinkett Smith, Aishwari Rai, Blake Lively, Zoe Saldana and Freida Pinto. The show was initiated by co-founders Beyonce Carter-Knowles, actress Salma Hayek-Pinalt, and Gucci creative director Frida Giannini.
I was lucky enough to have been invited by my cuz Janet Shaw who was working with the team that put on the whole gig- Control Room.

With my mentor Fleur Safarty (ex MTV SVP), we were treated to a spot in the executive box where a waiter plied us with drinks and food which included victoria sponge, scones with clotted cream and jam, giant neon coloured macaroons, sandwiches and more.

JASMINE WITH FRIENDS PARAMI, ROB AND FLEUR!
Rita Ora and Jessie J were opening warm up acts. That shows you the level of a list that was headlining. We saw Ellie Golding, Iggy Azalea, John Legend and more do their thing before Timbaland came on to play hypeman to all his hits. When Duran Duran front man Simon Le Bon joined Timberland for a Duran Duran song the over 30’s in the crowd (yep that’s me) went mad! It was a big look! Another big moment was just after J lo did her Malcolm X speech “I believe!…..that the girls need the right to education globally”. Halfway through her set the living legend that is Mary J Blige just jumped onstage to sing, “come together” (Beatles) with J LO!!!
Jada Pinkett Smiths speech about women who are human trafficked daily across the globe was sincere and powerful. When the final act came on we were all already in a spiral of roller coasting excitement that was about to reach crescendo heights. Queen Bey came on and killed it in her usual superhuman style with a few of her solo hits, a few Destiny’s Child hits, as well as paying tribute to Whitney…..(And Dolly Parton)…with “I will always love you” .Beyonce still looks like a superhero as she sings and dances to barely any playback…95% totally live! Incredible to witness! A great line up, fantastic live venue, and brilliant all round event for a great cause- KUDOS!

GINA YASHERE SELL OUT CONCERT AT UDDERBELLY FESTIVAL-SOUTH BANK!
gina y
JASMINE WITH COMEDIAN GINA YASHERE.

The hilarious Gina Yashere took part in the South Bank Udderbelly Comedy Festival where on a sunny bank holiday weekend, hundreds of people came out to watch her show performed in a giant upside down purple cow. Hence the title ‘’Udderbelly’’. It was great to witness huge posters of Gina all across the river bank before the show. This London lady has come so far. Broken out of the urban UK comedy scene and is now selling out venues across the globe. Pretty impressive!
She was so funny. Her jokes were both shocking hilarious and captivated the very diverse crowd. She shows her freestyle skills by bantering with a huge hen party who were in the audience, and also a young man who attended with his mum who may or may not have only been around 15 and a lil shocked by the X Ratedness of the content which took pot shots and Gina’s own particular crazy point of view on a variety of things including the Olympics, the Woolwich tragedy, Oscar Pistorious, rappers and more. A great cultured way to spend a sunny bank holiday!
JOSH KUMRA

MASTERCARD PRICELESS GIG- RITA ORA AND JOSH KUMRA!
JASMINE WITH JOSH KUMRA- WHO OPENED UP FOR RITA ORA
Miss ‘’killin-it-everywhere-right-now’’ Rita Ora performed at a very special showcase at Café de Paris for Mastercards Priceless campaign. Former Sony BMG boss Mervyn Lyn (strategic partnership solutions), invited me to see rita in action with her opening act Josh Kumra. Mervyn played host onstage for the night and worked the microphone better than most professional DJ’s usually hired to this. I guess he’s spent decades telling hosts what to say and how to say it- he’s now able to do it all himself!
Josh has been silently putting his work in with his manager former Sony boss Matt Ross. Josh’s acoustic set showed him to be a very capable and pleasant music act. His chart-hit time is coming soon. Rita, as expected, was mesmerizing. With her longer than long, poker straight GHD hair. Looking like a fly sexy mama in her black mini skirt, patterned see through blouse and vertiginous heels. Rita is an exciting performer and has moments that her fans remember. One such moment was when she grabbed a pair of drumsticks and used them as accessories to beat aggressively on a drum during one track called “making me uneasy” she has numerous Call and response duet moments with her crowd encouraging them to mimic her vocal training riffs. Another moment was when she covered a no doubt track stating she loved Gwen Stefani and been influenced by her for years hence the red fire engine lips and peroxide hair. She also did a cover of nerds “she wants to move” paying special attention to the ‘’she’s sexy!’’ lyrics. Clever girl. There was the now predictable homage moment to biggie as she spat his lyrics over “it was all a dream’’ which took us slickly into biggies “Party n bullshit”/that’s just how we do ” cover hit. A final memorable moment was when she grabbed and put on a fans “party n bullshit hoodie when she sang that song and then another fans cap for “rip”
There were a lot of suited business types up in our area who were hysterical with happiness dancing away to Rita-such is her aura.
Rita told us her 2nd album “out of love” was coming very soon and performed us a couple of exclusive songs from the new work. One titled “Boy you’re makin me fall head over heels out of love”.
In the VIP audience were TV talent music booker Susan Benitto, Sugababe singer Keisha, PR maven Vanessa Amadi, photographer to the stars Paul H, singer Lemar and more. A lovely, exclusive, evening. Congratulations to Shaun Springer at MasterCard. Another priceless night for music fans!

JASMINE’S JUICE featuring A.M Sniper and Shystie!

sniper
JASMINE WITH A.M SNIPER IN CYPRUS!
This week Jasmines Juice is tipping its hat to acts that keep grafting.
The ones that win are the ones that stay in the race. I recall 2 decades ago when Kylie first declared her interest in going from being an actress to a music star. She was the most ridiculed woman in music. She stuck at it and over the years the graft equaled success and icon status.
2 acts that I’ve seen multitask and work hard at their craft this past decade are male MC A.M Sniper and female MC Shystie.
Anthony Melas aka A.M. SNiPER is the main man out in Ayia Napa.He is the man that can in Ayia Napa yet he was born in England and grew up between London and Cyprus.
Fast-forward twenty years and A.M Snipers music is being played across Europe, he’s performed and collaborated with superstars from both sides of the Atlantic such as 50 Cent, Memphis Bleek, Akon, Wiley, Lethal Bizzle, K Koke, Sway, JME, Ghetts and Rick Ross and appeared in numerous publications throughout Europe.
I first came to hear about Sniper (as he was known back then), during his time with the chart-topping So Solid Crew, who he produced for as well as featured as an artist. This past year Radio 1 DJ Charlie Sloth has supported snipers music. The first single of 2013 to give us an insight of what is to come is the A.M. SNiPER humorous take on British bling (due for release in June). “It’s Big (The Kettle on my Wrist)” was written and produced by A.M SNiPER and is a “cockney” take on the rhyming slang for watch – kettle! On first view of this video it reminds me of a Busta meets Ludacris video. Its humorous, witty and a fun watch.
I caught up with A.M Sniper this week to ask where it had all gone so right! He laughed as he revealed ‘‘its big’’ the Video came about like this. I’m a English/Cypriot – and the video director Sheriff Francis is a video director who is Egyptian Greek, with millions of video views in his fan base. He reminds me of a European Hype Williams. I reached out and asked to work with him. We worked on the track together. He got it from the get go. A lot of people don’t always get the sarcasm I’m attempting to portray in this track and mistakenly think I love bling. I’m taking the piss, not trying to be materialistic. As soon as the director told me ‘’I see a Zulu chief opening up the shot’’ I was sold. It was mad fun on the set in Mayors Hotel in Napa, the AENEAS. What I wanted to achieve was the show people’s uniqueness in this video and how they get along. You can see an Arab sheik, a Mediterranean guy, a black golfer, a female bodybuilder…all different and unique. I used to notice a lot of European rappers wearing a new york Yankees hat, I went for a kettle aka watch, that’s closer to my culture than a NY Yankees cap! I was trying to show that music is superficial, you know me, I never use my money to utilize my music. a lot of current us hip hop albums sound like shopping catalogues’’
A.M Snipers Album ‘’1am’’ is what he’s working on right now. The ‘’a.m’’ are not just his initials. They also stand for the time of day he’s best-the early hours. He shrugs ‘’my name one day could just be ‘am’’
Ever the survivor, he’s always being hit with obstacles, trials and tribulations. ‘‘Between 2004-2011 I’ve been hit with numerous legal court cases to do with my previous music deals with the Around The World single with Roc A Fella, the music industry, contracts and record labels shutting down- this is the reason my releases have been inconsistent, but I’m a seasoned fighter LOL’’’’
In 2011 a lot of my frustration was released on my EP that I put out, after that physical and mental release I was ready to do an album, 5 years ago my mainframe was different-I wanted a no 1 but now I’ve gone back to scratch mentally, I’m proud of my journey. When I was 16 I was a DJ now I’m releasing records!’’

Asked about his friendship with Charlie Sloth he recalls ‘’Charlie , back in the day when I was doing stuff with Eminems DJ- Green Lantern, Charlie was doing a reality show called ‘’Being Charlie Sloth’’. Back then Charlie wasn’t as big as he is now but he’s the same guy today, he’s still real. We both wanted to create what the Americans have created in the states. Aside from UK festivals Charlie’s music festival ‘’Fire on the beach’’ in Aiya Napa (July 13, Aug 3rd)…is the only other festival outside of the UK that highlights and champions British acts. Regardless who you support it’s a unified scene. Devlin hasn’t been here before so that will be good too’’.

This summer in Napa, A.M Sniper will be performing with Dappy, K Koke and many more at “Fire On The Beach” and Labrinth and Tinie Tempah at the “Summer Love beach music festival” He smiles ‘’its going to be a successful summer. I have a couple new singles that I cant wait to perform called #BusPass with a surprise feature and ‘’no where’’, which can also be read as #nowhere ‘’now here’’.

Asked about the UK scene right now he nods ‘’ I love Rudimental, they make me feel emotional. I’m also very impressed by Naughty Boy. His numbers are real but he’s not about hype on twitter and stuff-that’s very impressive! I don’t like to be tagged as a part of only 1 scene. I chill with Giggs, Wiley. 1 is grime, the other is hip hop I like to stay diverse’’.
shystie
JASMINE WITH SHYSTIE-10 YEARS AGO DURING HER ‘DUBPLATE DRAMA’ ERA
Like A.M Sniper, Shystie has also been known to me for over a decade now. She used to be the lead actress in a very high rating MTV BASE show called Dubplate Drama. She was a mesmerizing actress who made it look easy to step sideways from music to the TV screen. But her heart lies with music. Over the past decade she’s grown up, found herself and focused on her music and is looked up to as a positive female giving breaks and advice to the younger females that are coming up after her.
shystie 2013 2
JASMINE WITH SHYSTIE 2013
Shystie, her manager Christian and I met up for a lovely lunch in Notting Hill last week to talk about her new music and return to the scene.

Last month she released ‘’Pinkmist’’. She explained the title as coming from the army soldier’s phrase about hitting targets and being confident.
She regained her music mojo after a holiday to Barbados after which she returned feeling fresh and rejuvenated. She found herself a new manager and took a year to work in the studio, listening to music on Youtube and listened to loads of Doc Brown and Missy Elliott.
She recorded new material in her hometown of Tottenham with her producer Elzbeatz. The new material is a lot more provocative than her past work. She laughs ‘’”We all gotta grow up sometime and get sexy”. I questioned some of her risky song titles. ‘’”Gimme head” is just fun talking to guys. That’s my favourite song. It’s not slutty, more empowering. My new stuff has more melody, its more sing song’’.
sexy shystie
SHYSTIE 2013 LOOKING ALL ”GROWN AND SEXY”
‘‘When I listen to new skool rappers now, all their materialistic stuff is boring. I gravitate towards the older acts. Even when Missy recently dropped ‘Triple threat’ it was amazing’’. It’s refreshing to hear Shystie speak positively about female acts that are her peers. Especially since she had a very public drama this year with fellow American MC Azelia Banks. Shystie admits the experience is behind her and it hasn’t affected her wanting to work with other female music acts.
‘‘As far as I’m concerned I came, I saw and from my experience I have conquered. I’m not bitter, suspicious or burnt by the experience. I’m grown and will move on to the next one, things like that don’t stop my path-its predestined’’.

JASMINE AND INDUSTRY FAM.
Finished the week with dinner with my external family. A lot of London’s movers and shakers are in this photo- see who you can spot! x

JASMINE’S JUICE featuring Floella Benjamin and Cash Money’s Veronica V!

FLOELLA
JASMINE WITH FLOELLA BENJAMIN AT THE BARBICAN- RTS STUDENT AWARDS.
Started the week attending the Barbican for the Royal TV Society Student Awards which is a great opportunity to celebrate the next generation of amazing TV makers this country will see fulfilling our visual taste buds with their content.
Numerous pre and post grad university students across the country enter their work into the annual competition and this was the final award distributing moment. As I walked in with my friend- Cookie- who runs Fortune Cookie PR (formally Cookie-the female rapper from the infamous UK hip-hop collective Cookie Crew), we grabbed our programmes and a cup of tea and biscuit. Just as we were chatting away I grabbed Cookies arm and staccato voiced said ‘’oh. My. Gosh. Is. that. Really. Her?’’ And lo and behold, there like an apparition before us was the woman who unknowingly brought up millions of British kids on TV in the 70’s and 80’s- the wonderfully maternal Floella Benjamin!
Now of course she is Baroness Floella Benjamin! We unashamedly abandoned our cookies and coffees and sprinted across to introduce ourselves to this Bastian of our childhood. Floella was gracious and welcoming and initially assumed we were students in the competition. We laughed at her thinking we could be so young and thanked her for making our day. Instead of simply being pleased to meet us, and waving us on our way, Floella and her gorgeously charming husband Keith chatted to us for ages. Keith is a well-known TV maker in his own right and they’ve been married 4 decades! Floella entertained us with tales of how she had to hustle to get into the game early in her career. She was great friends with carry on star Kenneth Williams and had us laughing at anecdotes of her conversations with him. Floella has a Trinidadian background and looked very chic in what I presumed must be a Chanel frock and loafers. She winked and revealed ‘’its from TK Maxx darling!’’. Back in her heyday Floella was fighting the diversity cause for people on TV by sneakily asked her BBC producers ‘’Cynthia, why don’t we include a black dolly/ Asian viewer/etc etc’’
Even when on a very important board panel discussing who’s heads should be on a set of stamps Floella convinced the panel that black faces needed to be represented so ‘’all the young children that have grown up with me have something to relate to’’
In her presence people from every walk of life just kept approaching her for hugs, photos and more with squeals of excitement. Her husband recalled ‘’ not so long ago, we were exiting the house of lords, and a policeman stopped our car and abruptly asked me to wind down the window. I did so and the policeman asked me ‘’is that really her? Floella?’’ LOL
The Floella effect! Which begs the question; if she still has this effect on all members of the public born across decades, why isn’t she still on television? She looked bloody amazing and when she spoke all around fell silent in awe and genuine interest on what this very experienced, worldly-wise lady had to say!

VERONICA CUTTING CAKE
VERONICA V CUTS HER CASH MONEY CAKE!

Next I caught up with the adorably chic new artist signed to Cash Money Records- Vanity Gardener otherwise known to her fans as Veronica V! I had been invited to host a dinner in honour of the lovely lady but alas it fell upon the same date as my father’s funeral so I missed out, however I did manage to catch up with Veronica afterwards who filled me in on all that went down.
DINNER GUESTS included people from many different areas of our scene. From the brand/fashion/media world were Adidas lady Paola Lucktung,
Mandy Pascal and Zainab Vandu-Chikolo from BURBERRY. From Veronica’s team were marlin Lynn, Veronica’s sister Valencia Gardner, Katina Bynum – Senior Vice President, Marketing – Republic Records and more. Also in the house were power players fro Cash Money- Ronald Williams – aka Slim, Vernon Brown – Cash Money Records Label Attorney/Business Manager
, my long time pal Vivian Scott Chew from Timezone International. Also in the house were two new cash money artists Chris Richardson (who was on season 6 of ‘’American idol’’) and Caskey!
CASKEY AND CHRIS RICHARDSON
NEW CASH MONEY SIGNEE’S- CASKEY AND CHRIS RICHARDSON.
Movers and shakers from radio included Laura Lukanz (1XTRA HEAD OF MUSIC)
,Davina O’Garro (1XTRA MUSIC PRODUCER)
,Lisa Cheung (CHOICE FM HEAD OF EVENTS)
,Charlotte Coker – (KISS SPECIALIST SHOW PRODUCER) .From record labels were
UNIVERSAL UK’s
Darcus Beese – who came for pre dinner drinks, Sarah Boorman , Ruth Parrish and Alex Boateng. ONLINE/TV people included Arfa Butt (MTV WRAP UP) , Rob Copsey (DIGITAL SPY), Annika Allen (FLAVOUR MAGAZINE) and Chantelle McCallam (BET INTERNATIONAL)
CASH MONEY CAKE 1
THE CASH MONEY CAKE- FOR A CREW THAT ALWAYS HAS ITS CAKE, AND EATS IT TOO.

Slim and Vernon didn’t sit for dinner, they arrived close to dessert delivery. They made a nice speech thanking everyone for attending and gave some insight on their plans for Veronica and Caskey ( a rapper that reminds me of puffy with his flow LOL) and Chris Richardson (who sounds like the new Justin Timberlake). Bringing the other 2 artists along on the promo trip was to give them an introduction to the UK/European media (they also went onto Paris and Amsterdam).
Dinner was scrumptious. Starter- Loch Var Smoked Salmon, Capers, Lemon, Brown Bread and Butter. Main- Roast Goosnargh Chicken with White Coco Beans, Mushrooms and Tarragon Sauce. Afters- Blackberry and Apple Pavlova with Caramelised Apple Or Banoffee Cheesecake with Salted Caramel Ice Cream. Mouth watering yet?
VERONICA ADIDAS 8
VERONICA CHECKS OUT HER ADIDAS GOODIES!
Over a cuppa Veronica told me that she ‘’started singing when I was 5, my mom said that I was in the backseat of the car belting out Shanice’s ” I love your smile” and she turned around in complete disbelief. I was in choir since the 3rd grade church and school so of course when I was 10 and I was fully ready to pursue music fulltime she was extremely supportive. I started by recording demo’s and that turned into tons of performances I just felt from God that music was my calling’’.

Veronica revealed all about her single ‘What Happened To Us’. ‘‘It was produced by the incredibly talented Polow da Don is a very special record for me. It was actually the very first record I ever recorded with Polow. We all knew it was special from the moment the intro came on. He wanted to give me a different type of swag so I followed his lead and wahlah….. I think women will be able to feel me with this record! I want to be a voice for women all over the world. The timid, the shy and the bold. Ive had the pleasure of working with Mr. Beatz who is a part of my YMCMB family as well as Detail, Polow Da Don, Jrock, Danja, Timberland, Ammo, King, Soundz, Morris Brothers, Darkmatter, Bigg D, RL from Next, the list goes on and on. God has definitely blessed me abundantly to be able to work with the talented people that I have. The thought of it humbles me greatly’’.

For years people have compared Veronica to both Lauryn Hill and Brandy to which she acknowledges ‘’ I LOVE them both so much that I was ecstatic to even be in the same sentence with them, I thought it was pretty cool.’’

Her story of hooking up with cash money is the usual great feel good story of a middle man pointing in the right direction ‘’Wow, Cash Money was a primary example of being in the right place at the right time! Period! We both recorded at the same studio in Miami and I guess one day the owner of the studio was in a meeting with Slim and Baby and he told them that they had to hear this girl that had been recording at the studio. I guess they liked what they heard because the rest is history! God is good..’’
Talking about her future the newest lady on cash money grins ‘’I see myself touring all over the world, modelling, acting, an activist for abused women and children. I literally want to do everything that God has ordained for me to do. And more importantly, I see myself always remembering where I came from and who helped me get to where I am. No worries, cause I know who butters my bread and that’s God! Can the church say Amen……….Amen!’’

JASMINE’S JUICE featuring PHARRELL, DIZZEE AND DAME DASH!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
JASMINE WITH PHARRELL.
This fortnight seen acts with longevity and kudos return to where they belong. Back in our ears and on radio. The worlds gone mad for Pharrell, Nile Rodgers and Daft Punks new song ‘’Get Lucky’’, and subsequently the new Daft Punk album.
Music snobs declare, that new music fans don’t really know Daft Punks old material, and are just jumping on the latest hype. Kids who think So Solid Crew are old skool have no clue who Nile Rodgers’ is, and needed to go research Chic’s ‘’Good Times’’, Le Freak and Diana Ross’ I’m coming out. Pharrell has always been a very understated music prodigy. Back under Teddy Riley’s wing when he wrote ‘’Rumpshaker’’ and produced ‘’Tonight’s the night’’ for Blackstreet, it was clear he was deep in this R&B game, with a very well tuned ear and love for the old skool anthems he grew up around. Pharrell isn’t just a great solo performer with a very distinctive vocal; he’s also the go to man way before Will I am, for making acts like Britney and Clipse hot. Pharrell’s mind is like Kanye’s. They’re both very articulate and intellectual and will debate in an interview with you for hours. Speaking to him again this week we reminisced about when he turned me onto Dan Browns books years before they were hot. Each time after that when we met we would have a book club chat about which books we were reading currently. This week ,mine was the Tommy Mottola autobiography, his – the Clive Davis one. Lol great minds think alike.
dizzee
JASMINE WITH DIZZEE.
Similarly, Dizzee Rascal, the most unhyped act, not into partying BS, is back with new music finally. His single with Robbie Williams -‘’Going crazy’’- has also set tongues wagging this week. I was lucky enough to have a sneak listen to a few more tracks and can honestly say he’s back. You have to admire the front of this East London cat, who just doesn’t care about hype or what his competitors are up to. He tours, does his own thing and makes his money. Cool as cucumber he returns to the music scene when he’s ready and takes over as if he’s never been away. I’ve always respected him for sticking to his word. He has had gripes with fellow artists and industry brands but once he disowns and cuts them off he’s on to the next one and a lone ranger in his field. A player who does things in his own way. The epitome of Frank Sinatra’s classic ‘I did it my way’.
damon
JASMINE WITH DAME DASH.
Sometimes ,doing it your own way doesn’t work for everyone.
How sad to see this week that Damon Dash ( one time right hand man of Jay Z), is facing eviction and huge bills he cannot pay. I recall this man making Roc-A-Fella the ground breaking label it was, via his hardcore take no prisoners attitude, where he forced Def Jam to promote the Roc logo, have Jay Z headline all tour promo, and never settled for 2nd best for his artists. Now nearly all of them from Jay to Kanye are living life comfortably, whilst Dame pays the price for burning so many bridges whilst he was on top. He is a classic example of a manger that enjoyed Puff-Daddy-esque fame and accolades, but didn’t fully protect his assets as he trusted his homeboys 100%. Years ago whilst working with Jay, Dame and Kareem Biggs (who last year went to prison for drug related offenses), I noted their ride or die mentality for each other. Whilst off duty on New Years dinners at Damon’s home in St Barts I witnessed his love and passion for entertaining his nearest and dearest. Nothing was too muchor too over the top- not even having Robert De Niro just sitting next to me by the pool! Then came the crack in the solid empire that the 3 built. For some reason Jay and Dame clashed. Jay wanted to take the label in another direction, Dame didn’t, he -Dame also wanted to involve Camron in co-leading the Roc. Dame wanted Cam to be CEO or some such bigwig title. Jay and Cam clearly had beef and Damon didn’t care. Against Jays will Dame was making moves as a solo leader. Little did he realize that simultaneously, Jay steadily with his ride or die right hand man John Meneilly was also silently making moves ‘’like the g in lasagne’’.Dame didn’t know what had hit him when Jay took over the Roc shares and sold to Def Jam leaving Dame wondering where it had all gone wrong. I miss Dame. Music needs characters like him. I wish he and Jay could recall their joint graft in making it in the early years. They were unstoppable.
The moral of these stories? Stay tight, communicate, and be in the game for the long road.

JASMINE’S JUICE FEATURING ”ONE MILE AWAY” and VANESSA AMADI’S ENGAGEMENT!

look at the ring
JESSICA, JASMINE, TAPPY, PAOLA, VANESSA, JODIE…ADMIRE THE RING!
Started the week celebrating my dear friend, PR guru Vanessa Amadi’s engagement with a female power players cocktail evening at the ME Hotels rooftop Radio Bar.
Myself and founder of Colourblind Cards Jessica Huie, Warner Music’s Taponeswa Mavunga, Adidas head lady Paola Lucktung and PR lady Jodie Dalmeda, all raised a glass to Vanessa’s impending nuptials with some opulent food and sexy cocktails and look forwards to the Nigerian wedding where I’m told money will be thrown around the bride at some point!
penny
PENNY WOOLCOCK- A GREAT FILM MAKER AND SOCIAL ACTIVIST!
Not many people put their money where their mouth is. I recently met an older, white, film making female director called Penny Woolcock, who’s made a film called ONE MILE AWAY. The intriguing thing about this is that the film is a true documentary about 2 gangs in Birmingham, and their former leaders attempts to call a truce to numerous killings. A dodgy prospect whichever way you look at it.
Penny Woolcock’s inspirational film about the work of a few committed individuals to build a lasting truce between the two rival gangs in Birmingham won the top prize at last year’s Edinburgh Film Festival, when Time Out called it ‘The Most Important British Film of the Year’, its had a bunch more stellar coverage in the Financial Times, The Observer and The Telegraph. The film follows the peace process between two of the biggest gangs in Birmingham, the Burger Bar Boys (B21) and the Johnson Crew (B6), to bring peace to their neighbourhoods. Her past work includes On The Streets (2010) a film about homeless people on the streets of London and 1 Day (2009) , a hip hop musical about a day in the life of an inner city hustler and postcode wars. Last month there were screenings across the UK of the ONE MILE AWAY film as well as a channel 4 premiere of the film.
One Mile Away was initiated by Shabba, a young man affiliated to the Johnson side who met Penny during her research for 1 Day. He saw her as neutral and as someone who had built trust on both sides. Penny agreed to get involved and introduced Shabba to Dylan Duffus – the lead actor in 1 Day and affiliated to the Burger side. The film follows their painstaking journey over two years to recruit more supporters from both sides. Along the way, they get advice from Jonathan Powell, who oversaw the Good Friday Agreement, and the riots erupt in Birmingham, with surprising consequences. The refreshing thing about this film is that it leaves a sustainable legacy for the gang members that took part in making it. The men run their own company with programmes that challenge negative mindsets in young people and support them through the education system. As team they have developed tailored interventions for different age groups. Their programmes target young people most at risk of being caught up in youth crime and dropping out of school:
They’ve called their movement the ‘’Road to Freedom Tour’’ and believe the One Mile Away film can change lives. And that’s why it needs to be seen by as many inner city young people as possible – at home, at school, in prisons – and as many police, judges, politicians and council leaders as we can get it in front of. The #RoadToFreedom Tour started on 15th April (start of the summer school term) and continues on until the autumn. However a tour costs money, and this is where they excelled as business minds. They put their cause on the now infamous kickstarter website –where the public can donate to a project they believe in- and then see it come to life and eventually maybe even get their cash back with a profit. With only hours to go before their time ran out on kickstarter to make the total needed to make the tour happen, the public gave generously and now the tours in full swing across the UK.
I still didn’t understand why an older Caucasian film director would care about making this documentary. Penny explained ‘’I initiated this film with channel 4, I live near Archway and used to see little bunches of flowers on pavements where people were getting shot, so I was shocked and wanted to talk about this more through my work . I find it very frightening that we live in this parallel world, where young people are killing each other, we’re all connected, there are people spending a fortune sending your kids to private school but they have to come back out to this real world’’

For Penny there is also a personal connection. ‘’After being mugged I didn’t want to be a frightened person, I wanted to see what made these young people behave like this and see if we could give a voice to their experience’’

The film developed into something more than just a film, because of a young former gang member called Simeon Moore who played Zimbo in the film. He was born in Birmingham and lives in Aston with his two kids. He first met Penny 5 years ago but only got involved in One Mile Away after seeing 1 Day. He is a big believer in a change of mentality. Zimbo believes that gangs are merely a symptom of a bigger problem and that rather than merely treating the symptom, which has been attempted many times before, we should tackle the bigger issue of mental well being. He believes unhealthy minds are one of the biggest problems facing young people of disadvantaged areas today. Zimbo is keen to see changes on the streets and in his community.
Zimbo tells me ‘’ my 1st impressions of Penny in 2005, were when she was making her past film 1 day, I was wary, thought she was police, I drove her assistant around the endz, but then I stepped away and thought best not to take a risk. A year later 1 day came out, and I realized she was real, so we built a relationship. The films opened doors for me, I’ve changed from a full time gang banger to running a company. I don’t watch TV as much, I read more, I research, I wasn’t that way inclined before’’
I was going in a good way anyway but I owe the opportunity to Penny, my mind was ready for her to come into my life. I am more musically inclined, not an actor, they were trying to get me involved in a long while, I’d always fob them off all the time, but I turned up one day, and told them what I thought. I said If you are going to focus on the real issues I will ride for that cause’’
Penny recalls ‘’Zimbo told me ‘’if you stop the gang violence everything else remains the same, drugs, violence -we have to address the mentality’’. So the actors were given business mentoring by Britdoc to use the film as a resource for social change. They wrote school programmes. Now its more of a movement, its Bengali kids in Tower Hamlets, white kids in Wolverhampton, its all youth’’

Zimbo added ‘’ With our tour we are getting a movement going with empowering gangs across the UK, all the youths want is to make money-they worship it, I’m trying to show them a better way of getting there. We are making it uncool to do negative things, we’re making it laughable to be criminal’. When I was rapping I was talking about the same thing I am now-some people call it snitching. I’m fighting against it, my last time in prison I’d had enough, I was on a 5 week trial, got found not guilty, I felt like a useless father, I’d been reading books, it all played a part’’. ‘’The secret’’ was the 1st book on my journey-I’m the controller of my own reality’’.
Zimbo debates the role of music in gang culture with me ‘‘the art of music is often hypocritical. The people making millions from it are not living that lifestyle. Rick Ross was a prison officer. I’m trying to make it difficult for UK rappers to rap about bullshit and negativity. I look at all these kids as my own. What we need to do is work from the top down. People in the mainstream like Rick Ross selling drugs, that makes the mainstream?’’
Penny told me that when she’’ first began doing research for 1 day, people thought I was working for the police. ‘‘But when I met Shabba. He trusted me. We’ve had a lot of trouble with the police, they went to every cinema in Wolverhampton, Dudley, Birmingham, and warned the cinema management ‘ there will be trouble if u show this film and so on. Even before the channel 4 screening the police harassed us on the day by insisting we add their logo to the TV screening to make it look as if we worked with them, thereby putting the young actors/ former gang members lives at risk’’

Zimbo nods ‘’ there’s a problem with the police, police trying to take c4 to court cos they weren’t shown in a good light in our documentary, they gave us a hard time throughout the process, so when we try to do something positive the police give you a lot of pressure. They’re trying to put their logo on the C4 film to try and get me killed. For the past 2 days penny’s been stressed right out-it makes it look like we’re working with the police-this could easily escalate things and incite violence, but they wont stop me-I’m a warrior’’
Zimbo praises Penny but questions the governments attempts at building peace on the streets ‘’it’s ironic that its taken a 63 year old white woman to bring some peace to our streets, she’s got nothing lucrative out of it-its really important that she was around, a lot of elder black people in our community haven’t stopped it in the past, but they are making money from it’’. 380million is spent on gang initiatives in UK. That’s a lot of cash, police have their own gang units-there are jobs in this, people, social services, job centres are making money out of it-why would they want it to stop-its not in their best interests, they start on the right path but once the ball stars rolling they lose perspective-it could have been dead years ago so I do feel resentful-I don’t know 1 active gang member that’s been helped by this money-where has it all gone? ’’
So Penny has made friends with gangsters, received death threats and fought a court case against the police (which she won) for this film and the youth of Birmingham but still isn’t deterred by the drama.
“I will be involved with the One Mile Away people for the rest of my life. It sounds cheesy but it is about love, in a way. I really believe in them and what they are trying to do.”

JASMINE’S JUICE featuring my daddy, Mr Dotiwala RIP.

daddy
DADDY’S GIRL- ME AND MY DAD.
This week, after many months of being unwell, my daddy passed away just 2 months shy of his 77th birthday. It was heart wrenching. In the past couple of years his health had declined with numerous ailments. Chronic arthritis, a type of sleep apnea, a dislocated shoulder, but the most deadly of them all, was a slow lung disorder that had been creeping up for years. His oxygen was really low, and therefore it looked as if he was nodding off asleep a lot. Some people in public may have even thought he was drunk on occasion. But no- as his oxygen stopped getting around his body and brain, he was slowly falling unconscious. His doctors used to tell me ‘’don’t worry, that’s what old folks do- fall asleep’’ etc.
My girl friends and I even used to joke and laugh about how we had photos of dad all around the world, Paris, Venice, Europe, all fallen asleep outside famous cultural monuments. Imagine how guilty I felt two years ago when a doctor clarified that my dad was literally suffocating slowly before our eyes and it was unstoppable. Dad had always insisted on keeping all the windows of the car and home wide open deeply inhaling for fresh air. It broke my heart to have to try and explain to him that it wasn’t the air and no amount of window opening would help his oxygen levels.
dad bellini
DADDY WITH A BELLINI- OUR FAVOURITE DRINK.
In the past two years I really began to understand what a carer goes through. Whilst working and playing hard, I took multi tasking to a new level by also being on call for any of dads needs 24-7. If he fell down at 4am, I’d jump in the car and go and pick him up; I’d drop off his shopping and groceries during my lunch hour at work. He was adamant he would never move out of his own home for more focused care. I know after sharing these stories with you in the past, that there are many young VOICE readers who also care for their loved ones. My utmost respect goes out to you. For two years it nearly brought me to my knees. How many of you manage over a lifetime during your childhoods I have no idea.
dad wine
DAD DOING HIS USUAL SOCIAL BUTTERFLY HOSTING WITH A BOTTLE OF ROSE.
I will try not to focus on dad’s final years when I think of him. He wasn’t always immobile and dependent. In fact, he was fiercely independent and bolshy.
dad labour tie
AT ONE POINT DAD WAS NEVER SEEN WITHOUT A RED TIE- RED FOR LABOUR!

Dad was born on July 1st 1936 in Mombasa, Kenya to the infamous Kenya Dotiwala’s – a very affluent doctor couple. The Dotiwalas in Mombasa were an extremely well-respected and wealthy family – dads father –Doctor Dotiwala -was very renowned. Dad had 4 brothers. Back then they were one of only two families in Kenya that owned a car and a TV. Every time dad told me that I’d dismiss it as silly, but at the church service last week, his Kenyan peers told me it was fact.
dad mum boat
DAD AND MUM ON A BOAT HAVING FUN- SOMEWHERE, IN THE GOOD OLD DAYS.
Dad met my mum (Roshan), in 1967 in Pune University (India), when he had travelled to study. Dad was a Bachelor of science (BSC), mum was a bachelor of arts (a BA student). Dad always joked that mum had hunted him down and begged him to marry her. They got married in India on 15th July 1967 and came to England on 8th February 1968. When they travelled across oceans between India, Kenya and England my dad boasted that every night they had sat and dined on the ships captains table.

After studying and marrying, on his return to Mombasa, Dad became a Customs and excise officer in east Africa. One now infamous night in 1968, Kenyan Asians with British passports were told they had days to leave Kenya, and flee to the UK if they wanted to keep their English citizenship. Dad fled (from a life of opulence, prestige, wealth and servants) with mum arriving in London practically penniless.
He joined the civil service in London before becoming interested in politics where he met his lifelong best friend- Paul Boateng. Dad, Paul and their various Labour party ‘‘comrades’’, like Councillor Colum Moloney fought tooth and nail for the community in Brent during the 70’s and 80’s. Paul did so well he became an MP, during his victory speech he said: “We can never be free in Brent until South Africa is free too.” He then famously declared, “Today Brent South, tomorrow Soweto!”. He became the 1st black cabinet minister in 2002, and then a Lord in 2010! Dad was always so proud of him and his wife Janet.
As I grew up I watched and heard Paul and daddy saying things like ‘’ my colour is part of me but I do not choose to be defined by my colour.” A lot of what I am now makes total sense when I look back at these influences. This week dads neighbours and friends told me that dad used to help everyone on Stonebridge estate, (where he lived), people who were at risk of going to prison or being evicted- dad would accompany to court and ensure they knew their rights.
At dads funeral Paul Boating gave a truly passionate and powerful eulogy, highlighting dads lifelong African influences followed by Councillor Moloney from Brent, who also spoke about dad. ‘‘He was my mentor- a minefield of knowledge and facts and had a very strong argumentative opinion’’ (at which point my other half glanced at me with a knowing eye LOL). Councillor Moloney added ‘’he knew all the bad men and others on the estate and helped connect their needs and stories to me in my weekly political surgery’’. Dads neighbour and friend Bernadette Walsh said ‘’once MP Dawn Butler came to visit us and your dad told her where to go in no uncertain terms after she had wiped £60,000 off the Brent budget’’.
Daddy’s friend Dulcie who owns the Trinidad Roti Shop in Harlesden said ”once a whole bus load of people in Stonebridge were terrified as a gang of young boys held up the bus with their pitbull dogs and forced it to stop…the driver and passengers looked terrified, but then your dad got on the bus 60 seconds later and the boys told the driver ‘we were holding the bus so my granddads friend Doti could get on!”

So daddy wasn’t always the elderly dependent man I witnessed recently.
My aunt Zareen- a professor in Boston, USA recalls ””your dad lived for several years with our family in Poona and went to school and college there. He had a very large circle of friends and endeared himself to them. People have many fun memories of Doti, as he was called. Once a policeman stopped him when he was siding a bicycle without a light and wanted to fine him. He looked at the policeman undaunted and said with confidence: “Go away. You can’t do a thing to me. I am a British citizen”. And he bicycled away, leaving a dumbfounded policeman just staring. For this and many fun things he did he is well remembered by his old circle of friends. ”

It’s interesting that his best mate Paul is of Ghanaian and Scottish background. He loved a fellow African. Dad’s carer Giusi (pronounced ‘juicy’),was of Ghanian and Italian descent and was sent to dad and I by God in his final months. Giusi went above and beyond her job role. She was thoughtful, kind and cheerful. She made life calmer for both dad and myself with her great ideas and solutions to every problem.Giuisi and dad were like good friends debating, gossiping and arguing over all dads rants. I will forever be indebted to her and Saga Homecare as well as Vernetta Beswick and Winston from Hillside Housing.

My memories of dad are ;
He was the man that a 7 year old Jasmine ran to the door to meet every night when he came home ….as he always had a red packet of Malteasers for me!
He encouraged mum to give me a pocket money raise at aged 10, after that he and I were known as the ‘’gang of 2’’
He insisted on sending me to ballet classes and at our annual ballet shows he was the embarrassing dad that stood up and clapped the loudest and wanted everyone to know I was his daughter
After he and mum separated when I was 7, he was allowed Saturday afternoon custody of me and would take me to a local restaurant – where he would help me with my homework and I would excitedly order ‘’red chicken’’ (tikka) -I got my taste for fine dining at an early age. Smile.
Every holiday we took as a family, I’d have photos of dad asleep outside the Eiffel tower, st marks square and on the cliff tops…we all laughed back then that dad was always dropping off….little did we know it was the respiratory lung disease beginning its slow deadly attack on his system which lasted many years
Dad once told a boyfriend I had at school, to get out of his house as ‘’no way in hell is a boy with an earring a real man and suitable to be seen with my daughter!’’
As soon as I educated dad in the eighties about café lattes and bellinis, he would never drink a ‘’common coffee’’ again
He wasn’t as marketing savvy as he liked to think-being addicted to can upon can of red bull in his old age -convinced it would ‘’give him wings’’/ energy!

Dad was born to be a party man-he was a night owl and wouldn’t ever be home before 2am or later. My own friends would often inform me the next day that they’d seen dad out partying at 3am on their way home! He would do anything not to have to go home. He wouldn’t care where he was, as long as if was out and about in public with people.
Once he convinced my whole girls brigade troupe from the church next door, to come on a ‘’free weekend to Brighton’’, we all ended up at the young socialists political convention!
Because dad was such a staunch Labour supporter I naturally veered to being a total Tory- once dad was furious with me that I was pictured in my weekly newspaper column with Boris Johnson ‘’you’re an embarrassment to me!’’ he screamed! LOL
He would notoriously forget all our birthdays and anniversaries and when confronted would always state ‘’I have the card I just haven’t had time to think about the meaningful words in them yet!!!’’
He was an obnoxious wannabee snob- I couldn’t think of becoming an air-hostess at the age of 9 as ‘’those girls are merely glorified waitresses in the sky!’’
He was a glutton. Any leftovers on anyone’s plate would be gone if dad was around. My childhood best friend and I called him the human dustbin
In later years his addictions aside from red bull were copious amounts of coffee and anything edible-especially his favourite-a chicken byriani
When my mates were over, he would eavesdrop at the door to get all the gossip and then tease us about things later
He seemed to model him self on James Dean, with copious amounts of bryl cream slicked back hair-not one which could out of place or he wouldn’t leave the house
dad champers
AS HIS LUNGS GAVE OUT HE STILL WANTED THE BEST THINGS IN LIFE.

Dad always demanded that I be the best I could be and do whatever I wanted as long as it was legal, I was safe and happy. He stood up for what he believed in ….not to mention being the last man standing on the Stonebridge Estate before it was torn down. In later years when he became a lot less mobile he must’ve contributed to at least 5% of Addison Lee’s annual takings and kept the majority of the local cafes/restaurants open.

Alas, by April 24th 2013, he had gone through too much frustration and pain, suffering and discomfort to continue his fight with life. He lived life to the full, finishing his final hours in public at the Serpentine lake in Hyde Park sitting next to me in the car, watching swans and ducks and cussing me…”THERE’S NOTHING WRONG WITH ME… NOW SHUT UP!!!” #Typical
After he was rushed by ambulance to St Marys in Paddington, my other half- James, dad’s child hood friend Manek and I watched dad change several shades of colour over a few hours. After completing all he had left to do on this earth, the next day April 25th, at 2:58pm we watched him give his final two shrugs and let out a sigh as if to say ‘screw this, I’m outta here’… And just like that, he left – ‘peacefully’, just as we had all wanted.

Right up until the final day, his mind was sharper than someone half his age. Not a day would go by without him reading the Guardian and Mirror-true leftie papers. We buried him with them and a jar of his biggest addiction-Nescafe coffee. I know he’s in a coffee shop in heaven right now demanding they heat him up a fresh latte.

Dad may not be walking on this earth anymore but his crazy antics will always live in my heart. His greatest joy this past month was hearing one morning that he had outlived Thatcher. Hobbling around on his zimmerframe with barely the strength to stay upright screaming ‘’that bitch is dead, get me a Captain Morgan and coke!’’

After dad had passed, and we were leaving the hospital, James noticed dads shirt, trousers and shoes were still in the private hospital room, I told him to leave them and the nurses would dispose of them. James didn’t want to ‘’leave dads spirit in the hospital’’ as dad always hated the hospital, so we bagged the clothes up and jumped on the over ground train at Paddington to go a couple of stops to get home. As we exited the station I asked James ‘’where’s dads bag?’’ he looked mortified and we both burst out laughing. The bag was still on the train, ….on its way to Oxford and beyond …just as dad would’ve wanted….travelling, onwards, not ready to go home. RIP Daddy.

JASMINES JUICE featuring THE PULSE TOUR and DWELE!

dwele
DWELE WOWED THE LONDON JAZZ CAFE!
Dwele at the Jazz Café was a memorable night of good solid musicianship. I caught up with Dwele after the second night of his London gig. He was ecstatic with the audience’s response and loved the chance to gel with the London based supporting band. ‘’I love London accents, the fashion, Adele and this great crowd’’.

Looking forward to this year’s summer festivals including the Essence Festival where Dwele will be performing his new album, Greater Than One, he smiled ‘‘this album has more Detroit artists on it, J Tate, L’Renee, Monica Blaire, and more. I’m a product of old skool Motown, I’ve got to keep the music alive, and I’m coming back to the UK on 10th May for Southport Weekender so look for me there!’’

JASMINE WITH THE MULTI TALENTED CARMIT BACHAR -ON THE PULSE TOUR!

Girl bands. They come. They go. They usually don’t stand the test of time. Alas, once many achieve group fame and success they can’t go the solo road alone.
But it’s a new day. Women keep their fingers in many pies. Their cups are not half empty or half full, as generally, they have a numerous cups. Multi tasking is the name of the female game.
Not long ago, Pussycat Dolls went from a Hollywood burlesque troupe to dominating the pop charts. For a short while. But then music bigwig Jimmy Iovine, decided to scoop the lead member up and catapult her to solo stardom and we assumed the rest would scatter by the wayside never to be heard from again.
But no- PCD’S Ashley Roberts joined the reality TV show path with her appearance in ‘’I’m a celeb get me out of here and Carmit-the fiery red head with attitude and a saucy smirk, kept on keeping on with juggling all her cups.
Thus far she is a relatively new mother, with a 2- year old toddler and hosting a dance tour all over the globe. This week that dance tour hit London.

Don’t get it twisted though this wasn’t just any dance convention. This is the elite of dance conventions.
Imagine if you will in the music world, record label heads like Russell Simmons, Clive Davis, Jimmy Iovine, Tommy Motola and Kevin Liles travelling the world sharing their knowledge with the musicians of the next decade. Or celebrity chefs Delia Smith, Marco Pierre White, Madhur Jaffrey, Gordon Ramsey and Jamie Oliver travelling altogether on a cooking roadshow. Well this is the one the younger generation wants right now-the Pulse Tour!

Dance has never been bigger. As a child, like many other kids, I rocked up to my part time ballet, tap and jazz classes, but back then it was considered elite and niche. Now with a million global TV show competitions, hip hop dancers teaching class at gym chains and more-dance is cool! Refreshingly as many males as females want to dance. Look at Flawless and Diversity!
This weekend the biggest buzz for London’s youth and young adults is for the Pulse Tour at Olympia in West London. Tickets are selling like hot cakes for the classes, which are led by the crème de la crème of the dance world. Every dancer has heard of these very strong dance personalities.
Cris Judd came to light after dating the infamous J Lo, but is a very established choreographer in his own right. Next we have reality TV star and choreographer to all the stars- Ms LaurieAnn Gibson. X Factor straight talking dance guru Brian Friedman and last but not least an incredible dancer- former fiery redhead pussycat doll Carmit Bachar! I caught up with Carmit a few days before the tour kicks off to discuss both of our first loves-the world of dance!

After congratulating Carmit on motherhood and her incredible journey back to showbiz, I confided in her that I was extremely jealous that as a young dancer years back I didn’t have anything as amazing as the PULSE TOUR in London.
She laughed ‘’All of us on the tour say we wish this was around when WE were younger, this has been going nine years in the states but this is our first year in London. Our faculty has around 12 of us and we have our own strong niche in the industry, it’s the premier dance convention that exists right now. If you’re aspiring to be a professional dancer then this is the tour to come and take part in’’.
Each teacher is not just famous, but has their own very unique style of teaching too. Carmit summed it up thus ‘’ with Brian-you never know what you’re gonna get, he’s very detail orientated, fast, always technical but fun! Criss Judd is very stylised, you almost have to wear a fedora whilst doing his moves, you can’t teach it but practice until it sits in your body. Laurie Ann- you never know with her either as she comes from an Alvin Aliey very technique oriented base but she also has her base in the hip hop world , as well as that she works with Lady Gaga and is very jazzy –she’s about the feeling. Me? I’m more on the sassy side like my former PCD style, a mix of street and sexy stuff, I call it sexy street sprinkled with technique-I like lines and flow!’’.
www.RichNSkinny.co.uk
JASMINE WITH CRISS JUDD.
This powerhouse of dance influencers and names came together out of mutual respect ‘’ We’re like the dance power movement globally, we’re friends, family, we’ve grown up together, and have mutual respect, We still take each others classes and we feel honoured to pass down our experience to the next generation of dancers now and you never know what could come of attending this tour. For example, Brian often teaches and if he spots new talent that he likes he hires them for X Factor in the USA!’’.

Back in the USA Carmit has been multi tasking wildly; hosting Pulse Tour conventions, her latest music project- a female duo that she’s a part of called Lady Station and being a ‘‘mommy’ ‘Being a Mother to a 2-year-old baby daughter has been totally worth it. I had a baby! I’m in heaven! It took me out of the game for a minute but was so unbelievable. It’s difficult to juggle, and yes, it would probably be easier for me to have been a housewife, but I’m fortunate to have an incredible partner, we’ve been together 14 years. He’s also in the industry and we share the responsibility, she’s with daddy right now, I’ll be home in a week, this is the longest we’ve been apart.

Looking at Carmit its clear her body has muscle memory and that post baby her body must’ve irritatingly snapped straight back into dancing goddess mode. She point blank denies that ‘’I only recently came back into my body after having my baby, aside from my physical form I still have out of wack hormones, I’ve always been an active and physical person but I had a 24 hour labour and emergency C section. Now I’m still healing and nursing and am very stringent with the choices I make with my food’’.
So she’s not a typical post baby Hollywood nip and tuck mum then? ‘’I did yoga for ages but my weight wasn’t dropping, it was so frustrating, and it was only after a year the weight started going. I did an active regime, with advice from Brian (Freidman), he got me onto Herbalife shakes and a healthy dinner routine. Now I’m back in a healthy zone and conscious about the stuff I put in my body. I look at my blood type to see which foods agree with me. Now I’m older and as a woman I feel the importance of the balance between mind and body. Power yoga is prominent in my life now’’.

I recall my numerous interviews with PCD in the nineties when they first came out recalling that Carmit was the very reason that powerful Jimmy Iovine at Interscope Records even spotted and signed the band. When the group was still doing their burlesque thing in nightclubs, Carmit knew No Doubt band lead Gwen Stefani, who had come to see the PCD girls perform. Gwen bought Jimmy along and the rest was history. Carmit recalls ‘’The way things fall into place there’s never rivalry, I was happy to link the group to Interscope, I met Jimmy through Gwen, Jimmy said what do you do?, I said ‘I’m a Pussycat Doll, he said ‘’what the f*** is that? Next thing, he came to see us with Gwen’’. So without Carmit, music and motoring power couple Nicole and Lewis, may never have been!

Carmit left the group in 2008. Reading between the lines its clear there were fallouts amongst band members. But I didn’t need to scrabble much for information, Carmit was pretty honest about the way history played out ’’We were all fortunate, I choose to remember the amazing times of performing onstage. Its unfortunate that girl groups have this stigma of bitchy rivalry. Unfortunately we fell victim to the same stereotype, but we will always share these amazing experiences. Now everyone’’s spread their wings. I’m happy that Ashley is doing so well here in the UK. In ‘’I’m a celebrity-get me out of here’’ she really surprised me, in the days of the band we used to scream if there was a spider in the vicinity-I cant believe she managed to do so much, I’m so proud of her!’’.

Dancing is a dream job for so many young people- but what are the realities of the job long term? ‘’Its fantastic that dance has been given so much exposure recently; it’s a new era. However when that happens you get a saturated market and now a lot dancers want to do it to be on TV, not to be able to dance. But look at the world now. With dance anything is possible! Dancers get to set trends these days, the market’s changed. If you dance, do it cos u love it. If the commercial world isn’t right for you, just participate in dance classes-this weekend in London has been mind blowing and we will be coming back again to make some of you stars!’’

JASMINE ON THE PULSE TOUR-OLYMPIA-HAMMERSMITH!

The day of the convention was every dancers dream. A whole day surrounded by your peers learning new dance techniques and buzzing off the vibe. It was relaxed but exciting. Like watching Fame. Dancers just letting loose everywhere. Criss Judd was the first teacher of the day and I was mesmerized by his uber calm, very chilled manner. His dance routine was Very Neyo style slow, slick and precise. His teaching method was Inspiring and motivating to the 200 young dancers who were Whooping and cheering this very self confident, zen like man.

JASMINE WITH LAURIE ANN GIBSON!
Next up was one of my favourites. The uber feisty reality tv show star and choreographer to the hip-hop fraternity- Ms LaurieAnn Gibson she stepped up and warned her class that todays routine will be ‘’Rachet’’. Hip-hop was in the house as the jerking, gyrating, pulsing and wilding out began to Nicki Minaj’s hit ‘ Bees in the trap’’
Laurie ann had One tracksuit leg up in typical ja roadman style ,straight up hood. She explained to the class ‘Hip-hop is a feeling, a way of life” her teaching is very musical with her not counting out bars of 8, but half beat boxing with her ‘’”boom ki kat boom!” style phrasing. With demands of ‘’ “Commit to the gangsta”, “I just want you to know you have your rachette degree” and ‘The harder the pressure the bigger the platform coming for you- you’re built for great things”…her class was high by the end!
www.RichNSkinny.co.uk
JASMINE WITH SISCO!
Next up it was the only British choreographer of the day- Sisco who was so reputed for greatness on the dance floor that every other dance teacher present was eager and scared to take his class. His moves were some of the strongest, manliest, fastest I’ve ever witnessed and I could barely keep up. As he demonstrated his routine the class would simply break out into spontaneous applause. The End of siscos class was like a scene out of fame where people were wilding out as if their lives depended on it!!!

I was really looking forwards to host and former pussycat doll Carmits class. As I had guessed she brought a very street sexy style to her routine switching up the days vibe so the girls were hyped to skin out with a few high kicks, pirouettes and floor writhing. Carmit is like the Yardie Pussy Cat Doll with her straight up dancehall moves.
www.RichNSkinny.co.uk
CRISS JUDD WITH BRIAN FRIEDMAN!
Final class of he day was taken by x factor star Brian Freidman who blew everyone away with his personality and got straight into it with absolute intensity and dynamic power. His choreography was more staccato and explosive. He is a straight hip hop dance star and beat boxed his way through teaching the whole routine.
He had us all laughing when he did a particular hop kick step and tipped his hat to Laurie Ann Gibson stating ‘’I watched that video “baby got back” a million times. If I could die and come back as a dance move it would be that! Lol’’ describing his routine he yelled, “Its like you’re going on a journey and your butt is your guide”

At the end of the day all the dancers and teachers sat closely and had a huge group Q&A session where they got to pick the professionals brains.
Dancers asked questions like ‘’How do I stay neat whilst dancing full out?-Brian replied ‘’core work ,planks ,dolphin presses, have a strong inner core and you’ll hit those positions’’
How to stay focused on the road and not get lonely? ‘‘You have to love it. Only love and prayer for it will get you through’’ Laurieann Gibson
How to do face expressions and not feel silly? – Sisco said ‘’like Beyonce-Create an alter ego’’.
Criss Judd added- ‘’dress for the part you want, not the part you have. Do you dance history research on great dancers like Michael peters, Jerome robins, Alvin Ailey., Fred Astaire, the Nicolas brothers. Bob fosse. If you don’t know where we’ve come from you’ll nave know where you’re going!’’
Catch the PULSE TOUR again in a city near you- a mind-blowing day for both dancers and spectators alike!

ALL THE INFO YOU NEED ABOUT THE ASIAN AWARDS
‘’These awards were born out of a single vision – to create an event, which would recognize exceptional achievement from those within the global Asian community, on a scale which had never been seen or done before. The Asian awards are about people – about those who stand up for what they believe in and those who step forward to make a difference ‘’- Paul sago Asian awards founder.
AW PAUL S PARENTS
JASMINE WITH ASIAN AWARDS FOUNDER PAUL SAGOO’S PARENTS AND MOTHER=IN-LAW
Paul is a man that started his career under the tutelage of Lord Alan Sugar. A straight speaker and a man most would love to call their boss. Always demanding the very best of his team and himself, he said he founded these awards after attending so many others and being left frustrated ‘’Unanimously the quality of these events wasn’t great, there would always be something; a spelling mistake in the brochure, the microphone wouldn’t work, the screen would disappear, they’d run out of time or the food wouldn’t be great. The second thing was the winners. I’d think ‘’truly why does that person deserve the award?’. We’re always looking to celebrate people who are genuinely outstanding in their field’’.
AW KANYA
JASMINE WITH MOBO AWARDS FOUNDER KANYA KING AS THE ASIAN AWARDS.
Alongside Sotheby’s, other sponsors of the evening included elite face Cream brand Crème De La Mer, Perrier Jouet Champagne, PR Newswire, the East India Company, Asian Wealth Magazine and Cobra beer.
Sophie Panizzo , the director of UK Sothebys International Realty said ‘’In a period when much in the news is about struggling economies , it becomes ever more important for us to remember that the world is full of amazing people , their achievements and accomplishments a constant reminder of what can be achieved with dedication and determination’’.
AW SWAY
JASMINE WITH SWAY AT THE ASIAN AWARDS.
Hosted by (half Asian) Lord Sebastian Coe, who said he was proud to be hosting the awards for the third year running, Sir Coe’s introduction was funny, engaging and sincere. (In my youth, when he was winning gold medals for this country in the Olympics and European championships, I don’t ever recall the British press mentioning that he was half Indian, with a father from Gurarat?).

EACH TABLE HELD A MINI TABLET TO BID IN THE SILENT AUCTION-VERY MODERN DAY!
On each table were two mini IPads for guests to bid for the items in the silent auction, which was a very chic and modern tech way of donating some money. A simple tap of a button and I felt good about giving, instead of the usual rigmarole of pens, booklets and filling in bank details! Often when I attending these functions I note that the auctions are very unsuccessful, but here you couldn’t stop the guests bidding!. It was quite exciting to observe the Asian wealthy tycoons all trying to outbid each other for Aston martin days, designer brands, music experiences, bespoke artwork, chef dinner parties, signed sporting paraphernalia from legendary sportsmen, holidays of a lifetime, even drumming lessons with Duran Duran’s Roger Taylor! At one point TV newsreader Tasmin Lucia Khan was onstage, auctioning off herself and other sexy ladies for an evenings dinner, and managed to set Dragons Den judge James Caan and another wealthy tycoon against each other to the audiences delight!
AW MACEROONS
DECADENT MACAROONS ACCOMPANIED BY COFFEE AT THE END OF THE ASIAN AWARDS FEAST!
Food was courtesy of Madhus and was unquestionably the best food I’ve ever tasted or seen presented at an awards show of this caliber. Sea bass with mango salsa wrapped in a banana leaf for starters. A royal thali (silver tray) with chicken, lamb, pomegranate and mint raita with pilau rice main. Finished off with a pistachio and almond mousse cake and masala chai panna cotta. All mouth watering to the palette and the eyes. Even the post dinner coffee arrived not with the usual petit fours truffle chocolates, but decadent flavoured macaroons. Waiters even regularly asked if anyone desired any more. If our over full stomachs could have taken any more we certainly would have. Full marks!
(one man clearly had eaten too much and had ITIS- here he is asleep post dinner -anyone know him?)

PETER ANDRE HAD A GREAT TIME!
Peter Andre arrived in sunglasses for an evening where he was going to be indoors. Thankfully he took them off when curtseying when introduced to Princess Michael. My mate commented that they couldn’t believe he was now pretending to be Indian so he could enjoy a free meal LOL! Former athlete, now TV sports pundit Colin Jackson looked suave in his suit. Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne spoke about the impact of Asians on the financial market globally. Eastenders actress and acting legend Nina Wadia won the bid in the auction for the Aston Martin experience for five thousand pounds and later, on collecting her award for outstanding achievement in television she began in the usual well mannered way but then slightly inebriated yelled ‘’oh fuck it-its about time!’. We cheered!
Radio 1’s hardest working broadcaster Nihal ran in to show his face before escaping to host his evening radio show.
AW BEV KNIGHT
BEVERLEY KNIGHT SANG AT THE ASIAN AWARDS.
Others in the house included singer Beverley Knight who sang mid awards, Gurinder Chadha, Amy’s father Mitch Winehouse, Emma Noble, Elen Rivas and nineties music act Sonique.
A very unique night where British Asians were proud of all the opportunities that this country has offered them, overseen and joined by many multi cultured high influencers and power players from every industry who were happy to unite to celebrate that! .

JASMINE WITH FILM MAKERS ROY AGYEMANG AND NEVILLE HENDRICKS.

FILM
The world’s getting smaller. We are no longer hostages to national media broadcasters who transmit every story from their own individual political angles. With social media connecting us in seconds to people across the globe, the truth is closer and more available than ever.
In my youth in the 80’s, I devoured media in the only ways available – print press, radio and TV. Therefore I was told the world’s news stories from one point of view. The British one. Like many, I still jump daily from many news platforms so I can see the same story from different points of view. Luckily I’ve also always worked in media establishments where I have access to a multitude of daily press. I like to think I see a balanced view of the world’s news.
As a teenager I recall visiting my parents birth homes in Kenya and India and my cousins laughing at my ‘’western brainwashed way of thinking’’ as I staunchly championed and supported my colonial British roots with pride.
A big eye opener was after 9/11 when; their thinking on why it had happened, who had caused it and why it wasn’t such a bad thing, shocked me to the core. Viewing their news channels and papers in Africa and Asia made me see that the world sees the west aka the USA ‘’and its puppy dog’’ – the UK, as the worlds playground bullies that pillage other countries for their natural resources, lie to justify their presence in other countries and think its ok to police the world.
Today it’s a very different world. Social media means that we hear the truth and diverse points of view without propaganda clouding our judgment as much as it once did.
Politically exposing documentary film makers used to be few and far between. Michael Moore and his peers make revealingly exciting docs that get mass media promotion but there are millions of lesser known doc makers that are about to break through the big screen horizon, and this week I was lucky enough to see 2 films by 2 very brave, pro-socially minded film directors.

The first was a movie about Zimbabwe leader Robert Mugabe. The second was called ‘’ONE MILE AWAY’’ (which I will tell you about next week).

Mugabe – The man that I had been informed by the western media was an evil villain. A dictator who was evil and needed to be brought down. The film was titled ‘’Mugabe – villain or hero?’’. Of course many of us would think clearly-villain! There are always three sides to every story though, one side, the other side and the truth.
Riverside studios in West London held a special screening that saw a diverse audience attend to make up their minds about the title. The doc was made cheaply. But its not its filmic qualities we are interested in-it’s the story.
The story of Zimbabwe, its people and history was told in an easily digestible manner from way back when it was called Rhodesia. The country was one of the last in Africa to fight for and win its independence from British colonization. The film showed how Mugabe was once a revered hero that moved in social circles with every great world leaders including American presidents, British prime ministers ,The Pope and even our Queen!. He was knighted by our Queen and visited London as her guest many times.
So where did it all go wrong? It seems that was when he decided to make the call for ‘’Zimbabwe for Zimbabweans’’. When he had to free his country and people of British rule he was suddenly cast as the evil dictator. In the now infamous Lancaster House agreement, Robert Mugabe and his supporters were pressured into signing and agreeing to wait ten years before instituting land reform. At the time, an agreement under Margaret Thatcher’s government had promised Zimbabwe that 10 years after signing the Lancaster house agreement, Zimbabwe land would be handed back to the people of Zimbabwe from the white farm and land owners. However once Thatcher was ousted and a Labour government took over the UK, they reneged on the agreement whilst Mugabe had played everything by the book. The then letter from Tony Blair’s cabinet member Clare Short, told Muagbe in no uncertain terms, that “I should make it clear that we do not accept that Britain has a special responsibility to meet the costs of land purchase in Zimbabwe. We are a new Government from diverse backgrounds, without links to former colonial interests. My own origins are Irish and as you know we were colonised not colonisers’’ and would not stick to the UK’s agreement.
Mugabe argues that land remains an issue because of the constraints placed on him by the 1979 Lancaster House agreement to end white rule in the former Rhodesia, and Britain’s betrayal of the promises it made to ensure a settlement. Since independence, only 10% of arable land has moved legally from white to black hands. Mugabe’s detractors say that that the black people that Robert Mugabe gave those farms to are political supporters of Mugabe who were given those farms as payoffs.
History states that more than thirty years after ending white-minority rule in Zimbabwe, Mugabe accuses the United Kingdom and the United States of promoting white imperialism and regularly accuses opposition figures to his government of being allies of white imperialism. When the United Kingdom once condemned Mugabe’s authoritarian policies and alleged racist attitudes as being comparable to those of German Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler, Mugabe responded with an extremely controversial remark, mocking the UK’s claims by saying about himself and his policies that “I am still the Hitler of the time. This Hitler has only one objective, justice for his own people, sovereignty for his people, recognition of the independence of his people, and their right to their resources. If that is Hitler, then let me be a Hitler tenfold.
Mugabe then left with no choice but to take matters into his own hands had to take the land back for his people by force. In any change to society, wars are fought and there are many casualties. Many would suggest that Tony Blair is a much bigger war criminal than Mugabe for sending our troops into Iran for the weapons of mass destruction drama. I don’t want to spoil the film for you but it an absolute must see to get a more balanced view of the relationship between Africa and the west. At one point in the film we even see leaders from China and Russia siding with Africa on the unfair sanctions and interference of the UK and USA in Zimbabwe. If the world is slowly getting wise to this concept of western bullying is it a wonder that we no longer feel safe in the UK anymore? What will happen in a generation when Africa regains its once former glory pre-slavery and colonization? Are we ‘’the West’’ doomed?

And here’s the most intriguing part of the story-this documentary was made by Roy Agyemang who used to be a KissFM DJ and TV producer for “Katie and Peter – the next chapter”
After the film there was a Q&A session where Roy revealed, “I wanted to show that Africans aren’t just killed by Tarzan. I went out there a proud British Ghanaian. I reconnected stronger with my African heritage – there’s no doubt about that. The UK only show press images of African leaders as negative dictators so I was spurred on to find out what was behind the headlines, we went out to Zimbabwe for 3 months and ended up there for 3 years! We were constantly fobbed off about getting interview time with Mugabe and at times did fear for our lives’’.
Now readers, I thought I knew the stress of making docs for usually a few weeks, with famous talent, albeit mine were all MTV music acts. Getting through layers of record labels, agents and managers is excruciatingly crazy at times, so I can’t imagine trying to work on a film for 3 years and risking my life in another country where government sensitivities are concerned.
Roy continued his thoughts on Mugabe ‘‘We in the UK awarded him a knighthood even though he was committing atrocities? Really?. It’s only when you go there that you can see the spiritual connection between the land and its people.
The funder of the film Neville Hendricks, who also used to work in the Katie/Peter team, was very passionate about the film, and even though he had advised director Roy to return to the UK when things got hairy he was pleased with the final outcome of the doc ” my take is that none of u would sit on a jury and hear the case just for the prosecution…the Lancaster house agreement was a deal which Britain reneged whilst Mugabe kept his word. What did we expect him to do? This is about right and wrong not black and white. I’d love to see an election in Africa where the west takes its nose out of the trough”
Many audience members spoke up in support of the films version of events and stance, and one lady born in Zimbabwe now a British resident summed it up for many of the Africans present when she stated that the film encompassed a true representation of her feeling of Mugabe being a hero.
A timely reminder of a famous Malcolm X quote ‘’Don’t be in such a hurry to condemn a person because he doesn’t do what you do, or think as you think. There was once a time when you didn’t know what you know today’’.

JASMINE’S JUICE featuring former Pussycat Doll, now PULSE TOUR host- CARMIT BACHAR

carmit-bachar
CARMIT BACHAR-PULSE TOUR HOST, FORMER PCD AND ”MOMMY!”
Girl bands. They come.
This week that dance tour hits London.

Don’t get it twisted though this isn’t just any dance convention.

Now everyone’’s spread their wings.I’m happy that Ashley is doing so well here in the UK.

If the commercial world isn’t right for you, just participate in dance classes. Come and join us this weekend. We’re all super excited as this is our first UK tour and we cant wait to dance with you all!’’.

JASMINE’S JUICE featuring London men doing it big! Artist Simon Frederick, actor Lonyo Engele!

sf3.gord macJPG
JASMINE WITH PHOTOGRAPHER SIMON FREDERICK AND HIS PORTRAIT OF GORDON MAC.
In totally unconnected circumstances this week a variety of friends from different social groups have asked me “why do black writers/ artists/ painters/ creative businesses have so much difficulty in getting mainstream recognition. I think its cos we don’t think big. Really big. Really commercial. Use all our connects and hustles. There are people that focus so much on their art but not getting it out there. Remember that old saying ‘”If a tree falls in the woods and no one is around to hear, does it make a sound?”? Similarly you could make the best album in the world, write the best book, be the best at what you do, but if no one knows about it who will be witness to your talent? If you are happy to create for your personal contentment then fair play but if not-GET IT OUT THERE!

JASMINE WITH SIMON AND HIS PORTRAIT OF DJ TREVOR NELSON.
I attended a photography exhibition for an old friend-photographer Simon Fredericks whose work “My friends at work” was also my mates at work too as we share similar social circles.

Simon had photographed people like actor David Harewood, actress Sadie Frost, broadcaster Trevor Nelson, former KISS Radio head Gordon Mac, freelance PR Jodie Dalmeda and Puma head lady Lisa Buchan and more, all shot in their working environments. He then added a variety of effects to the photos giving them a canvas painted feel and look. The final effect is stunning and powerful.
The Gallery Different in Percy St held a launch attended by most of the artist’s subjects and was covered by the Daily Mail newspaper and more.
Whilst being given a private guide around the art by Simon, I commented that one portrait was extremely strong. It was of Saville Row tailor Mark Powell. He looked tough, confident and ballsy. As fate would have it right at that moment Mark entered the gallery looking exactly like his character out of a Guy Ritchie east end drama. Cool as f*#* and his personality was just as cool and cocky as I love a geezers to be!

In an era where the extremely wealthy elite class have had enough of cribs, rides and bling, I can truly see portraits being the next on their acquisitions list starting with a “Frederick”. Warhol? Who’s that LOL?
lonyo
JASMINE WITH ACTOR LONYO.
Next, I woke up one morning to find my mate that lives up the road from me, who used to be an MC (called Come Ci Come Ca) on the mic at parties when I was younger, made a classic UK urban hit song called ‘’Summer of love’’ years ago, had become an American small screen star overnight! I keep seeing actor Lonyo Engele’s face all over posters , my American friends facebook timelines and trailers for current American smash TV series The Bible which aired on the History Channel. The miniseries was watched by 13.1 million total viewers, according to Nielsen.
You may recall me telling you about Lonyo last year making his acting debut in a film titled David is Dying ,which I caught at the BUFF FILM FESTIVAL. (British Urban Film Festival). He was a real stand out talent at that. David is Dying went on to win a Screen Nation Best Actor award ‘’the day before my birthday’’ beams Lonyo smiling in pleasant recollection ’’it was a great moment’’. The film also went on to win an American Black Film Festival Award and is the first British film to film that distinction!
Lonyo then broke down how he got his current big break ‘’then I went for an audition for The Bible. I actually get flown out to Morocco for it. I auditioned for 1 of the kings parts. At the same time I was also filming a BBC drama ‘’New Tricks’’. I got all this via my agent at Identity Drama School –his name is Femi. It’s the Number 1 black agency in the country and gave me a brilliant progression route to where I am now’’.
Lonyo alas didn’t get the role of the king but revealed ‘’I got a call saying I had got the guardian angel role. So I was flown to Morocco again for 6 weeks filming the part ,which Included 2 weeks of sword and stunt training. Clearly I had to know how to hold a sword for the role. The other angel was a world champion swords man so I had to really step up and focus’’.
The Bible series is made by British husband and wife team Mark Burnet and Roma Downey (responsible for numerous other TV smashes like Apprentice , Survivor, The Voice)…
When I asked which famous Hollywood style names were also in the show I was told ‘’the cast is an “international ensemble” chosen to avoid “distracting the audience with recognizable celebrities”; “many” of the actors came from a background in London’s theatre district.
Lonyo told me ‘’”My role is to deliver the message to Abraham that he’s being tested and to let him know that we’re going to destroy the city of Sodom, I was quite familiar with the Bible before. I go to church. But I had to re-familiarise myself with it. When it came to acting I Haven’t had much training and I’m still in training now. I had to go with my hunches. One hunch didn’t go well when I tried to act a bit cockney”. The Director was like “ummm less cockney please” lol “My script was juicy with lots of lines and action and we finished filming last year, it was on air in the USA throughout March but now there are plans to take it worldwide.’’
Talking about what’s next Lonyo humbly mentions ‘’at the moment I’m still finishing my next course of acting school and am in a play. I’m also having voice training for acting for the American market and my American accent is poor LOL. But having these past projects behind me will all hopefully help my future career on screen’’.

Smiling about his now regular red carpets and interviews by press he shrugs ‘’its all ok as I’m older now and had experienced that stuff when I was a musician. I prefer to work. But winning awards for acting is great. I don’t find the barriers are up there in the acting world the way it is in music due to my age. In acting you can start at 40-in pop music that’s well past it’’.

Lonyo revealed he still has fingers in many business pies; he is making documentaries and so on. He finishes with this classic quote ‘”Evolve or become extinct!”
His director Mark Burnett said ‘’regards THE BIBLE airing outside of America, Now we’re about to start around the world. This will be in every country of the world. More people will see this series than everything we ever made; together, combined. Billions of people will see this series. Billions’’.
Get ready people- west Londoner Lonyo is biting at the heels of Idris and will no doubt be a big name on your screens very soon.

JASMINE WITH THE ORIGINAL DRU HILL!
By now you all already know about the infamous R&B superstars show at Wembley Arena last fortnight. You already know it was a great evening-akin to an R&B legends festival. Well organized and running to time the evening showcased 6 acts; Damage, Changing Faces, SWV, Dru Hill, Blackstreet and Jodeci.
We arrived very early at 5.30pm for the VIP backstage reception pleasantly surprised to find the private suite heaving with people all in great spirits drinking and socializing. The whole night had been organized by my host Lisa Maffia with her partners Clint Ippoma and Steven Beckford. Yes, she of So Solid fame.

Just 2 days earlier she had performed a great show at the 02 Arena with her group playing her role of sexy front lady boss woman. Now 48 hours later she was in full business lady mode in a monochrome dress and vertiginous Chrissy Laboutin studded heels running around getting things organized with her team.
The launch was sponsored by audio sound company Bassbuds so the goody bags were astoundingly good. Each contained hair products, sweets, crisps, downloadables, Swarovski crystal earphones and mini speakers (which we fought over once we got home lol)!. Lisa very kindly walked around and handed them out and as much as I am used to a media freebie- I was impressed and thankful. Lisa made it a family affair as her partner was the host with the most greeting family and friends and his dad Michael was helping guard the goody bag area-we introduced ourselves after Michael said hi and informed me he read THE VOICE every week. He didn’t look old enough to be anyone’s dad! Good genes!

JASMINE WITH MODEL TYSON BECKFORD.(PIC Anneliese Harmon)
There was even more to be thankful for as the legendary visually pleasing male eye candy that is model Tyson Beckford was backstage causing a buzz amongst the ladies. I caught up with Tyson for a minute as we discussed old MTV issues. Lovely Misha B was sat with friends at his table. The always beautifully mannered Oritse from JLS was excited to be at the show too. We caught up at the bar and he explained that tonight’s acts were all the music he had grown up on.
The vibe was so good backstage that actually once the show began we were all still socializing. We literally took our wonderful seats just as Changing Faces finished. But all reports said the 1st 2 acts were good.
SWV in my humble opinion should have been nearer the top of the show. They are the ONLY ACT on the night that had their original full line up and sang strongly with powerful vocals. They held the crowd with hit after hit. In between acts the big boys at CHOICEFM-Jigs and Rampage had the party going with host Eddie Kadi who at one point had the whole arena-a sold out 11,000 crowd-all doing the candy dance!
The stage set changes from act to act were slick, quick and not noticed so entertained were the audience. Dru Hill were also great but it really was just Sisqo and overweight member Jazz from the original line up. And it showed. Sisqo was on fire! As always with ridiculous levels of energy as he bounced around the stage and held our focus. Jazz was too heavy to join in all of the dance routines so he literally stood by the side of stage and joined in the songs. The other 2 members just weren’t up to scratch. A pity as I would’ve liked to have seen Nokio and woody too. However luckily with Sisqo leaping from speaker to speaker and having us singing along to all their hits it was a great set. I was ecstatic as they performed ‘’Tell me’’ with the complete old skool, original dance routine where they bounced along the piano.
Next it was legends Blackstreet who showed their set was rehearsed down to the last bar. From the get-go all in white top to toe outfits and headwraps they had a dance routine comparable to the 90’s and hit after hit flowed from the band. Their sound was the best of the night in terms of band and production. However once again only Teddy Riley was present from the original line up and the end of the bands set was an ode to his contribution to the music world as he conducted a 20 minute mash up of every hit he had ever made from bobby brown, Michael Jackson, the whole swingbeat era and more. We weren’t complaining, every track was a jump out of your seat smash and we were dancing hard.
Then it all came to an abrupt emergency break halt. Where before we had slick, quick set changes suddenly we were left with a monotonous length of time as they prepared for the headliners –Jodeci. Now backstage there had been a big debate where I had assumed Blackstreet would headline. Next I was about to find out why they should’ve. Jodeci took ages to get their stage ready. The DJ’s started getting us ready by playing R Kelly vibe tracks. Suddenly the beats changed to jungle, grime and much more modern stuff which had us all bouncing around. Hell-the DJ even played Mary J Blige ‘’Real love’’ which I thought would surely put Jodeci member K-Ci off as his ex lover crooned about their ill fated relationship just before he took to the stage! (IT DID!)
What happened next was like slow motion. The band finally came onstage and for a hot minute it was looking good. They all strutted out in white shirts and sneakers with black trousers and leather jackets. It was a real rock star entrance. Then band member Mr Dalvin walked to the front of the stage and kept walking-right offstage and took a huge drop to ground where he fell on his back and stayed there motionless as if in shock before struggling up and spending painful moments trying to figure out how to get up onstage again. When we viewed this back post show on the video camera it seemed that he didn’t fall, he definitely jumped, but perhaps misjudged how high the drop was. Everyone was in disbelief. Jaws were hitting the arena floor in shock. Worse was to come. The vocals were awful. K Ci was struggling. The hits weren’t attempted. At one point the whole audience was booing. K Ci seemed oblivious and asked ‘’you want some more?’’ by now it was well past 11pm and much of the audience began leaving as it was clear we had already seen the best of what the night had to offer us. After another 5 minutes we too left. Even as we walked to the car we could see by twitter that it was getting worse and that at one point apparently Dru Hill came back out to help sing with Jodeci!? Oh the tragedy. It turns out afterwards that they had only bothered with a 3 minute soundcheck, Blackstreet meanwhile had around an hour and UK band Damage had to fight to get any!? Outrageous!
This is the band we had all saw as our version of the Rolling Stones. The band that everyone got frisky to. The band that females lusted over and males wanted to emulate. To see them reduced to this was car crash tragic-funny-disappointing. Dear immigration officers-please ban this act from the UK until further notice. Banished!

JASMINE WITH ELO-THE MAN BEHIND TKO MANSORY CAR CUSTOMISATION-(REMEMBER HIM FROM ALL THE BIG MODELLING CAMPAIGNS BACK IN THE 90’S?)
A few days later I found myself at the launch of TKO Mansory-a customizing service for cars for very high-end earners with a lot of wealth. Housed in a huge warehouse just outside of West London in Hayes, the evening saw a mixture of trendy model types, rich arabs, bankers and financers and the man who invented bikram -Mr Bikram Choudary!

JASMINE WITH BIKRAM CHOUDARY!
I was fascinated that Mister Bikram wasn’t 300 years old and looking like Jesus- he was a young, quite trendy LA hot bod! Literally! After I gushed at him about how much I loved bikram I returned my focus to the cars. It was fascinating to see all the cars. Every type of car you can imagine from Hollywood movie star cars, to sexy fast and furious style rides to Royality style Rolls Royces and Bentleys.
ELO TEAM
ELO AND HIS TEAM AT THE TKO MANSORY CAR CUSTOMISATION LAUNCH.
The evening showcased the vast variety of possibilities for cars if you have the cash to have the work done. Former model and face of numerous big campaigns in the 90’s –ELO-was the mind behind it all and with his wife Mai and 2 young daughters hosted a wonderful testosterone fueled night followed by an indulgent party at the Rose nightclub. If you like cars or live in London do go and check out the place- London motor museum. An amazing experience for the whole family!
SATURDAYS
THE SATURDAYS AT THE V INSPIRED AWARDS RED CARPET.
Finally I saw what was really important by attending the roundhouse in Camden where the annual V Inspired Awards were taking place. The V Inspired family are young people all across the UK that give up time to volunteer to do amazing things for the communities around them. Their stories are heartfelt and truly inspiring. Youth that are carer’s for their parents, youth that have set up charities and made loads of cash for their youth centres as they would have been scrapped by the council and more. The night was hosted by the man of the week-MISTER EDDIE KADI-and model Katie Piper.
The V Inspired National Awards aims to challenge negative attitudes towards young people by highlighting the talent, motivation and generosity of young volunteers.
The categories and winners were:
All Round Commitment to Volunteering: 18 year old Beth Carty, from Chester, set up a youth club to support families affected by ADHD after her frustration with the treatment of her younger sister who has ADHD. Beth also creates weekly sessions for the young people with to try new sports and make new friends
Best Young Volunteer: Amy May Knowles, from Cirencester, at just 16 is the main supporter for her mum who has three complex illnesses, but despite this, launched her own charity to raise awareness of CRPS (Complex Regional Pain Syndrome) and also chairs the Cirencester Youth Town Council. Her goal is to inspire children to help other people in life

JASMINE WITH V INSPIRED WINNER-Eliza Rebeiro
My particular favourite was the Bringing Communities Together award which was won by Eliza Rebeiro, from Croydon, who set up the Lives Not Knives project, after seeing two of her friends stabbed, with the aim of reducing gang related violence in her area. She runs road shows in over 30 primary schools and manages a team of 20 mentors. I’ve watched her project go from strength to strength-she’s a great young achiever with huge potential.
Terry Ryall, vInspired CEO says, “This year has seen some of the highest youth unemployment figures of recent times, so it’s testament to all the young volunteers here at the vInspired National Awards who have worked tirelessly to achieve their dreams and help others. The awards are a chance to celebrate all the great things young people do and celebrate their passion, creativity and determination”.

JASMINE’S JUICE featuring ROYAL TELEVISION SOCIETY AWARDS!

JASMINE AT THE RTS AWARDS-PRE DINNER RED CARPET
Started the week last Thursday celebrating Persian New Year with an abundance of food, flowers and family around our Persian church. Then ran off to so solids much hyped come back gig at the indigo 02. Next was the big Jodeci, SWV, Blackstreet concert at Wembley Arena, finally finished the weekend back at my own ballet school in west London-shout out BABEL SCHOOL OF DANCE and my ballet teacher Sara Ridley. Then it was the v inspired awards at Camden’s roundhouse. So much great engaging life in this city!
RTS
The most fun part of the week was attending the annual ROYAL TV SOCIETY dinner and awards. The RTS Television Journalism Awards were founded in 1978 and seek to recognise creative and excellent journalism by organisations whose broadcasts are received in the UK and by the agencies, which supply UK news broadcasters. The Awards ceremony is held each February in central London. At the Grosvenor house hotel, the evening was black tie and full of the really real powers behind the UKs TV. I was attending in my capacity of being an RTS Futures committee panel member. (The RTS fUTURES are an absolutely essential group to become a part of if you want to be in TV. Its free and easy to join up online and the best place to make those early TV industry contacts).
On the night the Grosvenor was a heaving, very formal venue of fabulousness. Black taxi’s pulling up, tipping out black tie clad tuxedo slick shiny shoed men. Very swishy knee length cocktail dresses on not to be messed with feisty TV females in vertiginous heels. The occasional long sweeping ball gown on a TV princess. I fell into the latter.
On arrival after sweeping down the famous ballroom staircase and passing the red carpet photo pit where TV faces like Ant & Dec, Keith Lemmon, Jo Brand, Coronation Street actors, high drama actresses and more were posing and pouting for the paps, I was guided to the very VIP reception on the balcony overlooking the Great Room. Determined to stay sober for as long as possible I scooped up water and wandered around seeing whom else I knew. I stopped at the huge dinner plan board to check out where I would be sat and whom with. To my horror even though the names were clearly in alphabetical order and clear as day I couldn’t find my name!. I looked again, tried all the usual mis-spelt spellings of my name but nothing. Just as I was about to question this with the head of the RTS organizing committee, I paused to check out who was at the uber fab top table? As I scanned the table plan I spotted my name. There must be a mistake I assumed. I can’t be sat with the Patrick Younge’s and Trevor Phillips of the industry. Yet-indeed I was. I didn’t point it out to anyone in case they’d realized they’d made an error and felt that id better get my best dinner party conversation genie ready fast.
TABLE DRAMA
JASMINE’S TOP TABLE SEATING PLAN.
Luckily all was well as I was sat next to other lovely RTS members that I knew so we talked shop, laughed, talked home DIY, men and more over the sumptuous 3 course dinner. The fish starter, lamb main and chocolate orange dessert were all delicious. The brandy/port option at the end as we toasted the Queen reminded me of the regality of the event and off the awards began.
The evening was hosted by female comedienne Jo Brand, who was hilarious, fast, witty and very entertaining. Whatever she was paid was well worth it. A TV audience are very tough to please. Many of us think we’re way smarter than your average Joe Blogs and it takes a hell of a lot to keep us cynics amused. We’ve seen it all, heard it all and experienced it all. It’s hard to impress a TV bod.
ANT DEC
THE LEGENDS ANT & DEC ACCEPTING THEIR AWARD-RIDICULING JESSICA EXPLETIVE FILLED SPEECH JUST BEFOREHAND LOL
I live tweeted all the awards as they happened to the great joy and disappointment of those not there that were part of teams that won or lost awards. By now you know the winners list. The most touching moments of the night were a unanimous standing ovation room for presenter Clare Balding, the whole of the Coronation St cast onstage to accept their award, Keith Lemmon heckling Jo, Ant & Dec acknowledging the previous best comedy winner actress Jessica Hynes expletive filled hilarious acceptance speech which included loads of “fuck film- TV rules’’ statements. (Funny the next days press suggested that the audience were gasping and shocked at her speech-nope-they were laughing and entertained-press hype LOL!) When THE BANK OF DAVE won best nations and regions show, Dave showed how eccentric his personality is by trying to do a call and response moment with the TV bigwig crowd which fell spectacularly on its head LOL. All the ladies present fell over themselves to gush over how sexy best male actor winner Sean Bean is.
The BBC lifetime award winner was sports caster Dave Gordon who made us all well up saying “thanks to BBC for making my dreams come true-I’ve enjoyed being an ambassador for them-I can die a happy man”. The final judges awards of the night went to channel 4 for its coverage of the Paralympics and to Danny Boyle for his vision of the Olympics opening ceremony. No one argued that UK TV was strong and made stronger by its pride in being British. A great night!

JASMINE WITH CHIP AND BIRTHDAY BOY-WRETCH!
Well readers I have competition. My annual parties have been a staple on the London urban lifestyle calendar since the 1990’s. From underwear parties at The Spot, to my joint Halloween parties with Mariah at The Collection and the Mandarin Oriental hotel, to my geisha girls meets pimps party at Queensgate where Usher, Lennox and Joe danced up a storm, to a multitude of other themed parties from Motown and Old Skool Hiphop at Anaya and more.
Other parties have come and gone but none have stood the test of time for the classic reputation of great music, great crowd and a truly unique night. Until now. A certain North London lad called Jermaine Scott otherwise known as Wretch32 has quietly started making his mark annually on his birthday with a really well turned out party. His crowd and peers from the next generation have been showing the rest how a classy shindig really does go down. Last year he held his birthday bash in Jermyn Street and by midnight it was full of his family, friends and peers like Leona Lewis, Kano, Bashy, and more.

JASMINE WITH PR MAVEN JODIE DALMEDA, DJ MANNY NORTE, MUSIC GURU RICHARD ANTWI.

This year he stepped his game up with a party at private members club Holborn House where the theme code was ‘’all black everything’’ probably to coincide nicely with his current hot single ‘’Blackout’’. Also the invite stated ‘’ Please note all mentions / advertisement of this event is strictly prohibited on any social networks or public forums.’’
Now you know once that’s up there on the invite it’s going to be a very exclusive, private affair.

JASMINE WITH WRETCH, GEORGE THE POET, GEORGE’S LOVELY LADY.
On arrival outside the very easy to park at venue, there were flame-throwing fire eating scantily black clad suspender and basque girls lighting up the street. In the past when attending industry bashes I’ve been careful to be demure and slightly business like as it wouldn’t be too professional to be seen all skimpy in the presence of young uns who I work alongside. However on this occasion I threw caution to the wind in the knowledge that I could be slightly less formal and adventurous as we’re all one big professional family now so my cleavage had a bit of an outing lol.

JASMINE WITH THE ALWAYS GORGEOUD PRINCESS NYAH

As I entered the venue I noticed a distinct change in the way I was greeted by all. Males were ‘’omg Jas-you look around 23! Amazing!’’ Females ‘’oooh Jas you sexy kitten look at you!’’ This made me both smile and worry, LOL that’s me, a Capricorn who’s never comfortable with compliments.
We went and made a beeline straight to our host Wretch to wish him Happy Birthday. The Wretch32 branding was everywhere-walls, cakes, cupcakes, ceiling, everywhere. Ever the gent he introduced us to everyone and beckoned for us to have a drink. At his side was his great friend Chip who had a huge welcoming smile on his face. I’ve always known Wretch and Chip to be supportive friends to each other from way back so it warms my heart to see their friendship is still strong and real. Throughout the night the two were seen to be laughing and hanging out together.
JASMINE WITH A YOUNG MAN SHE’S CHAMPIONED SINCE 2006-CHIP!
I caught up with Chip for a while and am happy to inform you all that his new music is imminent. I teased him on being all grown up now. He laughed ‘’yes Jas-look at me-I even have some chin hair now!’’
I had to do a double take when I spotted Misha B who had red hair extensions put in her hair-she resembled a very young Missy Elliott whom I worked with many moons ago. Whilst the majority of party people looked very slick and elegant in their black attire, there were as expected the usual few who were more keen to make an impression with their nakedness. One lady had on a bra and g string with a bit of net lace over the top. Another wore what was clearly a top as a dress and when she lifted her arms her underwear and way too much else was on show. Also there was A LOT of fake hair extension action going on. Ladies no one believes its your own once its hanging past your butt!. So many ladies did get it right though and looked gorgeous.

JASMINE WITH JODIE AND MUSIC ACT NY!

North London music act Nyomi Gray, known to many under the name NY, looked classic and sweet in her sequined mini dress, as did model Tia Ward in her shorts and shirt ensemble. Princess Nyah showed how to show a lil bit of flesh yet keep it classy. Radio host Reg Yates was chilling with his lady and having from early on in the night, as was new kid on the music block George the Poet and his lady.
I had to scold DJ Manny Norte for not following the dress code (again-he didn’t follow it for my party last year either), as he was certainly not in black but he did as ever rock the party so was forgiven. The other gent that kept the dance floor hot was Twin B who set it off correctly.
Wretch’s friends are indeed a diverse bunch and upstairs were Only Way Is Essex birds Lauren Pope and others that aren’t as well known. She was rocking a striking knee length black leather dress with metal studded shoulder and looked hot. Singer Egypt had on a dress that seemed to be stuck on with cellotape and was extremely riske!
Dancer / choreographer to the stars Royston was dancing around with singer Terri walker and songwriter Carla Marie. SBTV founder Jamal Edward’s also turned up not rocking the black dress code but I could see more than one person had told him off so I decided to smile and hug him for his misdemeanor and not mention what was already quite clear.
West London’s finest lyrical wordsmith and performer Bashy rocked the rocker look in a black leather jacket and had many a lady attempting to catch his eye.
Music industry major player Richard Antwi was very merry. (Don’t worry Richard-its our secret). Alexandra Burke looked cute, comedic mystro Kojo turned up late!, Sincere, Skepta and Scorcher partied hard. Naughty Scorcher also didn’t adhere to the blackout dress code!

JASMINE WITH JODIE AND CHOREOGRAPHER/ DANCER ROYSTON.
During the night the Fire eating ladies gyrated and writhed around on the bar, which did at times make ordering a bellini awkward. ‘‘Hi please can I get a bellini, a kir royale and a JD and coke?’’ (Whilst trying not to focus on the legs akimbo pum pum spread eagled in my face lol). A certain very high profile music industry bod actually had been watching too many hip-hop videos and at one point was seen pouring his champagne down said dancers butt as she crawled on all fours on the bar.

JASMINE WITH JODIE AND SONGSTRESS EXTRORDINAIRE-TERRI WALKER!

Wretch had a lovely breakout area upstairs with a photo booth where his guests were taking photo after photo to commemorate the night. Also on display were cupcakes emblazoned with the number ‘’32’’. One friend said ‘’aw is it his 32nd birthday today then?’’ ummm.
Also a huge square ‘’Blackout’’ cake was on display. Wretch was very presidential all night with an air of relaxed fun and hospitality where he made each and every guest feel welcome and at home. Like every great party shots were flowing, bottles were popping; much laughter was in effect, North London really repped well. Wretch isn’t just a champion in the charts-he’s a champion human being!

JASMINE WITH DEAN ATTA-FUTURE POET LAUREATE!
2 nights later it was time for a very cultured moment as North West London’s Dean Atta launched his book ‘’I am nobody’s nigger’’ at the Hammersmith Lyric Theatre. He performed a live set of poetry from the book whilst a live paint artist reworked the books title artwork on the stage backdrop. The evening was touching and inspirational. He performed pieces about his growing up in northwest London, his mother, his mixed race heritage and his sexuality. Dean is a very talented gifted wordsmith that can perform live poetry in a new and very unique manner. With accolades from other great wordsmiths like Benjamin Zephaniah and more he is on his path to greatness! Asked at the end of the evening what his future ambitions are Dean replied ‘’Poet Laureate?’’

JASMINE AND DEAN, WITH THE COMPLETED ARTWORK FOR DEAN’S BOOK.
And the media tells us consistently our young men of colour are no good, without ambition and not achieving? See above. That’s all.

JASMINE’S JUICE featuring IDRIS ELBA, TREVOR NELSON and GIRL POWER LUNCHES!

JASMINE WITH OLD FRIEND IDRIS ELBA AT LOVE & LIQUOR
March really is a month for fun. It’s as if all the end of year cobwebs and early new year depression have finally cleared, the daffodils are blossoming and the fabulous soirees are back in full effect!
This week alone has been like a chapter out of Craig David’s diary .The week began on the Friday- (THE VOICE week always begins Friday as we go to print every Thursday! Fridays the new Monday lol)

On Friday I dragged some friends down to West London’s Kilburn High Street where THE WIRE and Luther star, actor Idris Elba has a DJ residency for a few weeks. The club is called Love & Liquor and really is as good if not better than most West End clubs. Its bars are cool and sexy with a very New York vibe. Its DJ and VIP booths are aptly designed and look out onto an always-heaving dance floor. The drinks aren’t unreasonably priced and even better, whilst their door is busy and not easy to get in, they don’t seem to have issues with folk of darker melanin pigmentation and so the crowd mix is hugely diverse and sexy. Guests were dressed smart casual and trendy and the vibe was welcoming and all were dancing without the hostile over whelming vibe of drugs and sleaze that you feel at many West End clubs with their oppressive security these days. Even better, actor Idris was joined on the decks for one night only by my mate DJ Trevor Nelson who I had gone to the club with (thanks Trev). Between them both they threw down a wide selection of classic old skool bangers both big and niche that had the crowd jumping up and down all night. The VIP was heaving with ladies trying to catch Idris eye but as ever he was the consummate professional and kept it moving. I have known Dris since he was a raver back in the day standing in the corner of parties nodding his head passionately engrossed in the music. I’m embarrassed to say that a few years ago at a Jazz Café event when he came over to say hello, his cap was pulled so far over his head that I smiled, nodded and moved on quickly not recognising him. Weeks later he was a superstar. Anytime he’s met me during my days at MTV the men I worked alongside have been just as excited about his presence as the women!
The most fascinating thing about him really is that he remains as humble as he’s always been. On Friday at the club I could see that on the other side of the VIP he was chatting to people so I didn’t want to interrupt him (however well you know artists there’s always a teeny tiny part of you that thinks they might not remember you –silly but true!). I stayed put and was chatting to my mates when he came over and interrupted us and to say hi to me and we caught up. Many artists have way too much pride to do that. Just shows how absolutely real this man is. You can take the boy out of hackney but you can’t take the hackney realness outta him.
He laughed humbly when I congratulated him on his continued career success and sex symbol status pointing to his beard saying ‘’I don’t know about that Jas-look at my white speckles of hair in my beard –I’m getting old’’
Asking about his side line music career and passion he revealed ‘’I have to focus on the main job of the screen stuff and dabble in my music where and when I can’’
Meanwhile Trevor was very merry. In fact more merry than I’ve seen him in a long time. He was DJ’ing, dancing up a storm in the VIP, trying to remain professional as Jamaican girls were winding up on him in a very sexual manner- go uncle Trev! LOL!
Photographer to the stars Paul H was present, and for once not working so it was great to see him relaxing and not snappy snapping away with his camera. BBC marketing exec Jay Davidson (works with Idris on Luther) was wilding out too. Great to see her having fun! International PR maven Rozan Ahmed (United Nations) was working the room with the artist manager-the lovely Chanelle Newman.

JASMINE WITH TRAILER HAPPINESS (PORTOBELLO RD) OWNER SLY.
Adidas head honcho Paola Lucktung was looking fly in her black and silver sexy off the shoulder sheath dress. She was dancing up a storm with her mate fashion stylist Natasha Chang-Lewis.
Warner music’s one woman branding bombshell Taponeswa Mavunga was in the house as was the once in a lifetime personality of sly who runs the Trailer Happiness bar in Portobello road. A great raucous time was had by all.
A night well worth checking out again- shout out to the main man that runs the night-Clement!

SATURDAY AFTERNOON GIRLS POWER LUNCH- JESSICA HUIE, (BABY J), JODIE DALMEDA, NADIA EL KHOLTI, JASMINE AND ROZAN AT THE RUM SHOP.

Then came a Saturday afternoons ladies power lunch with PR Maven Rozan Ahmed, British PR maven Jodie Dalmeda (Sony Music/ Virgin Unite etc), Colour Blind Cards founder and CEO Jessica Huie and her baby, and Nadia El Kholti (Sony etc). We all met at the Rum Shop just off Portobello Rd and took over half the venue with food, noise, baby escapades and laughter! We debated so much and so loudly that we had to have a rule in place which involved us holding a white table napkin in order to speak and make ourselves heard!

The same evening it was time to pop on my ‘’ all black everything’’ themed outfit with me attending Jermaine Scott aka Wretch32’s birthday party on the weekend.
His invite said ‘’ Please note all mentions / advertisement of this event is strictly prohibited on any social networks or public forums.’’ You gotta love an invite that says that right? (More on that next week!)
Then on Sunday of course it was all about mummy- every year that passes and they’re still with us is not ever to be taken for granted!

On Monday after a day at work and an exhausting circuit gym session I attended a sold out Tabernacle in Westbourne Grove where we saw the great and the good of the music world gather to see one of the last intimate shows that future superstar Laura Mvula will perform. Key influencers like Mervyn Lyn and Mastercards Shaun Springer were in the house. Laura’s voice was stronger live with a full band than on record and she really blew the crowd away. Big things for her coming!

Next I had lunch with an old friend. Back when we were all raving at Subterania and Hanover Grand nightclubs, a young man named Lonyo Engele was a DJ, MC (known back then as Comme Ci Comme Ca ), and artist that sang a catchy summer hit called ‘’Summer of love’’ (got to no.8 in the UK charts). Last year he cut his teeth in the acting world playing the lead in a film titled ‘’David is dying’’ for which he won numerous acting accolades and awards. This year he’s stepped up a level by being cast in a screen adaptation of the bible aptly titled The Bible, which is getting rave reviews and humongous ratings in the states. (More on that next week too!)

Onwards to another acting world talent when I went to see film director Mo Ali, who invited me down to his film set to watch the filming of his latest movie ‘’Montana’’…yep more on that next week too-not enough room on one page.
The next evening I enjoyed a catch up with my fellow Ladies Talk TV cast (Angie Le Mar, Jackie Michaels, Jacquie Joseph and Bonnie Greer) in Soho. Currently the shows in between series but we’ll be back in a few weeks-look out for the bigger, new and improved series!
I love staying busy! My tip for life is acquire great friendships, nurture them, make them a part of your extending business network for brainstorming and have as much social fun as possible with them. The harder you work on your friendships, the better your business goes. Sounds strange but believe me it’s the truth!

JASMINE’S JUICE featuring KANYE WEST and BARAC ACTIVIST GROUP!

JASMINE WITH MISTER WEST.
My boy Kanye never fails to disappoint. He’s been hopping from here to Paris and back again this fortnight with his solo shows. Beautiful sets and costumes greeted us. The show was full of hits for part 1 and then expected in part were his going off road into ranting territory. He’s always been honest, opinionated and out spoken. He challenges the status quo and I will always love and respect him for that. Many music acts can’t even string together an articulate acceptance speech at an awards ceremony these days. Long gone are the days when real rock and roll stars had a political stance, an opinion about the world and encourages their fans to take an interest in it. Someone once said that if you have the chance to stand in front of any number of people and speak, you should make sure you have something significant to say. Acts like U2, Prodigy, Michael Jackson, Annie Lennox and more always used awards show wining moments to say something worthwhile. Nowadays people can barely join 3 simple sentences of thanks together. Clearly seen by Brit winner Ben Howard just a fortnight ago. Kanye has always been opinionated, well informed and out spoken, in the first few times I worked with him when he was still a producer for jay z and dame dash, he was eloquent and straight talking on what he liked and didn’t. He tried to convince jay and dame for years that he could be an act in front of the mic instead of behind it. Jay wasn’t convinced at all. Dame always wanted to give all his team a break and usually gave them a few shots at the big time. I attended a few dinner parties at Damon’s London, Chelsea crib around a decade ago. One infamous moment saw Kanye and Mos Def free styling in an upstairs doorway post dinner. They went back and forth on verses over and again. A few months later dame let Kanye step out from the production board and attempt a solo career. The rest, as they, is history. So kanye comes out, smashes it in global charts, dabbles in fashion, isn’t afraid to wear a ‘’tighter fitting jean’’ like a European and show his prison baggy dressed American brethren how to dress classily, he has the balls to say what we’re all thinking on the national hurricane Katrina telecast, he stands up and speaks up for the gay community, he openly and proudly admits his fascination for porn, he directs a pro-black film, he designs a fashion collection, he loses his mother, mourns for his mother, is responsible for urban catchphrases like ‘’ima let you finish but xxx…’’, he is openly happy about declaring his love for reality star Kim Kardashian, third in overall digital sales of the past decade. He changed the portrayal of hip-hop having to be about a street imaged thug. He made being smart cool. He has sold over 30 million digital songs in the United States making him one of the best-selling digital artists of all-time. He is also one of the most awarded artists of all-time. Kanye is a real man.
Kanye has accomplished more and influenced more of today’s popular culture than many superstars have managed in decades.
Every time I’ve interviewed him, as a journalist I’ve had to prepare really well. No run of the mill, fly by my pants interview I can wing. When you’re going to speak to Kanye you better do some great research, come up with some great questions and have an interesting conversations or this man will tell you about yourself. I always have a long, good nights sleep before talking to him. I need to come with my A game for him or I’ll soon be pulled up. He’s not a question answer type of star. He’ll push you and ask about your opinions and test your knowledge.
So at his recent London shows at Hammersmith Apollo he has the balls to rant about art not being for arts sake anymore and it all being about corporations, sponsorship deals and shampoo adds. He cusses the Grammy awards for bumping him one year for lady gaga. He makes news. People are outraged. Really? This is Kanye. He has hits, can put on a great show but also has something to say. This is my idea of a perfect artist-someone interesting that has something to say!
His father is Ray West, a former black panther, his mother Dr. Donda West, was a Professor of English at Clark Atlanta University, and the Chair of the English Department at Chicago State Uni. How could he not have excelled with DNA like that? I had the pleasure of working with and spending a whole day with Donda a few years ago. She was so inspiring and positive. Her energy radiated love and intellect. I adored her. She brought up her son to be unafraid of the world and articulate himself so he could stand alongside greats and be counted.
He’s done everything on his own terms; I for one will always be team Kanye.

JASMINE WITH ACTIVISTS LEE JASPER AND ZITA HOLBORN
Started the week in the House of Commons with activist’s Lee jasper and Zita Holborn. Others in attendance for the initial committee meeting included actor Vas Blackwood, representatives from the national union of teachers, council trade councils, London underground and more.

JASMINE WITH THE BARAC GROUP AT THE INITIAL LAUNCH AT HOUSE OF COMMONS

Lee and Zita have joined forces to form BARAC (black activists rising against cuts). The organisation want to bring awareness to the fact that after the 2008 recession the large cuts to the public service and jobs have meant that predominantly women of colour have been forced out of the workplace at a higher percentage than the rest of society.
All funding for all single supplement groups like Caribbean elders, Asian women, young black men and so forth has all been stopped. In times like this, austerity amplifies racism and deprivation and Lee and Zita are hoping to give a voice to all BME communities to take a stand.
They are also going to ensure that the UK celebrates martin Luther king’s 50-year anniversary of his ‘’I have a dream’’ speech in style. August 28th 1963 was when it happened, this august will mark 50 years since that great speech and so MLK50 is born. You heard it here first! Mark that date in your diary and look out for MLK50!

JASMINE’S JUICE faeturing THE BRITS and actor/ fim maker FREDI KRUGER (AKA Fredi Nwaka)!

THE FREE FOR ALL DRINKS ON BRITS NIGHT!
Well its official! The January blues are over and London is truly back to its fully rounded glamorous glitzy hub that it is the rest of the year! The Brits are one of the 1st big shindigs of my industry on this side of the globe and always a nice turn out. I’m a little disappointed there wasn’t much controversy this year. Controversy is what awards need to spread the buzz. Remember Michael Jackson versus Jarvis cocker at the Brits? I also love that the night always re-establishes the need for the MOBOS as hardly any of the UK urban music scene are ever rewarded and acknowledged by the Brits. A decade ago it was Craig David, this year it was Rita Ora. Nothing changes. Its good to know where everyone stands. Also on the flipside, maybe the Brits folks think ‘’those urban acts have the MOBOs so we need to ensure that the rest get recognition!’’.
It was one of the busiest Brits I’ve seen with the daytime sound checks and preparation manic. The dinner tables looked lovely at the 02 and the starters were already placed on the table before 5pm. (that freaked the bacteria phobe in me a bit!). One of the Brits big wigs Suzi Aplin was running around in her usual stylish, sophisticated manner. I first knew Suzi when I was a mere runner at TV production company Planet24. She was a great producer but I also took in her daily glam look and aspired to be just like her. Amy Winehouse’s father Mitch wore a shirt with her image imprinted on the rear. The jury was out on whether that was a good look with people looking a little disturbed by it. I didn’t see the problem. He’s there representing his daughter and wants people to be reminded. Nothing wrong with that.

THE STUNING SKYLINE FROM HERON TOWER-BRITS NIGHT!

The same night as the Brits was my and my partners ‘’first date Anniversary’’ which we always spend together doing something lovely so I had to kick out of all things Brits and had an amazing night at the tallest rooftop restaurant in the city at Heron Tower where Bellini’s and amazing food awaited me. The skyline is stunning and I can’t recommend the venue enough if you’re looking to impress. My other half did good LOL

JASMINE WITH ACTOR/ FILM MAKER FRDI NWAKA
The very next morning I had a meeting bright and early with a music act, turned movie actor, turned moviemaker. Back in the day he was known around London as the MC Freddie Kruger, now he goes by his real name Fredi Nwaka. I’ve known Fredi for years from being around the scene. He was always a very well worked out muscly dude who my girls and I referred to as ‘’Hench man’’ when we saw him at parties or Sunday afternoons in Hyde Park.
More recently he’s been on BBC NEWS bulletins for having his recent film ‘’if only’’ screened at Bafta and inspiring young people. I was keen to catch up with him to find out about his journey so far.
Fredi Grew up in Brixton (with his dad) and Chelsea (with his mum). He went to school in Wandworth and was in the “untouchables” gang. Like most gang entry stories they found him via word of mouth. At same time Fredi was djing on sound systems. This progressed to him doing reggae/rap style shows in the states. I remember him supporting R&B group H town many years ago in Stratford at the infamous Rex. At that show he jumped out of a coffin!. Freddie Nwaka became Freddie Kruga after someone told him “you remind me of Fredi Kruger”. Then the infamous slashing films came to the UK-and I compared the character to me with the synergy of knives and stuff and that’s how my stage name came about’’.
Fredi has had a long, hard journey with his music. He was once even part of the extended Wu Tang family! ‘’I was signed to Wu International. I had been on ChoiceFM back then doing an interview with Wayne Rollins and a Wu rep was there. He was setting up a European subsidiary of Wu. He contacted me afterwards and asked me to come onboard so I joined them. Alas the rep-Mark Corden fell out with RZA so that deal for me folded’’.
Another chapter in his music book came when he was managed by one of the legendary group members of Kool and the gang! ‘‘When the urban music group POV came to London to do shows I bumped into 1 of them (Hakeem) in Oxford Street who asked me where he could find a black barbers. I told him not in the west end and took him to my ends in Brixton. He ended up coming to my house and having tea with my mum and me. We stayed in touch. We formed a duo in America called Tanaka. Hakeem is Robert bell’s (Kool and the gang) son and so for a minute his Dad managed me. But that came to an end too and eventually I came back to London at age 28 after 10 years of trying to do this music thing’’.
Thereafter Fredi did bits of independent stuff everywhere. He made a DVD called “Married to the streets”. It was nominated at the screen nation awards. He won awards at the underground hip-hop awards. He starred in the 50 Cent, Danny Dyer movie Dead Man Running. The director of that film-Picky-is also working with Fredi on future projects.
Simultaneously Fredi has a day job that he’s held down for 16 years! That in itself is very impressive to me! More recently he set up a company called C.R.I.ME, which stands for creating role models in media enterprise. He then applied for funding and won lottery money to run filmmaking workshops in Balham. After that he cast actors from his workshops in his latest film “If only” which is a short anti gang/ youth violence film

The film focuses on 3 parallel stories about the consequences of being associated with being in a gang. He sent BAFTA the trailer. They said yes to screening it. Next the BBC heard about it and attended and news anchor Ayesha Buksh made a story on it, which saw Fredi appearing on BBC News bulletins all day one day last month.
Since then his film is being developed into a workshop, which is being taken into schools, colleges and prisons. It Forces young people them to ask questions that start “if only..” about their own decisions.
Making more films is the future for Fredi. He writes, produces and directs his own work and has just finished writing more feature scripts. A Comedy, a gangsta and a thriller. One will be shot in London, the others in the Caribbean and America.
He’s connected to other British filmmakers like the legend that is noel Clarke and they may have some work coming up together too.
Fredi’s final BAFTA screening for his latest film ‘’if only’’ is this Sunday March 3rd at BAFTA , 195 PICCADILLY. It’s open to anyone in the public so come and see the screening at 7pm. Many Vips and movers and shakers will be attending.
Link for tickets priced £8.00 available from www.shoobs.com (type If only in search). You can follow Fredi’s journey by following him on twitter here, @fredikruga.
This is the story of tenacity and graft. A typical example of someone having that go-getter streak that wont let closed doors stop him from achieving what he knows in his DNA he was born to do..
So now he has a future in film! So if one path doesn’t come through you go down another. I salute you Fredi!

JASMINE’S JUICE featuring Laura Mvula!

JASMINE WITH LAURA MVULA AT SARM STUDIOS-A STAR IS BORN!

I started the week at The MIND benefit hosted by Harvey Weinstein on Friday night, a swanky charity do with a lot of extremely wealthy folks turned out for a great cause!
The opulence didn’t stop there. we continued with a wonderful weekend of glitz on both sides of the Atlantic! A great way to excite a cold, snowy, soggy February.
Over in los scandalous it was the music industries biggest accolade –the Grammys. Beyonce and Jay cemented the fact that their extended clique is always the hottest. Jay’s boy Kanye has the world twittering about Kimye and their impending baby. Kanye’s ex Amber Rose was so pregnantly huge she could’ve been carrying triplets at the Grammys, Chris Brown –love his staying power but the full top to toe white suit just looks tacky and cheap now unless it’s a la Puffy on a boat and made of linen. Riri in her long red gown for once looked classy and pretty as a princess. Justin and Jay really did their James Dean and Sinatra thing performing suit and tie in their black tuxedos. Of course (Jays company) Roc Nation brunches are now legendary with Jay Brown (Jays right hand) and his team hosting them regularly in various cities around the world. The London ones have been slick and memorable and I hear from my sources that the pre-Grammy one in LA was uber stylish too.
This side of the water Roc Nations Rita Ora has been selling out and performing the hell out of her solo shows across the UK. I love Rita for her tenacity. She’s not a mega perfect vocalist like Adele but she doesn’t need to be. She’s a great performer, with a very fresh unique style and star quality. She has been on the scene years and paid her dues. The main thing I get from her is strength. You have to be damn strong to go through this industry with grit and panache and she’s succeeding so far and making Roc UK look great! This team seems to be killing every department so far this past few months. All jigga ever prophesised in The Blueprint and more has come to be!

The sexy soirees weren’t just stateside though. Here in Londonium it was the biggest thing for the acting accolades as BAFTAs were handed out to deserving folk. Unlike the Grammys which seem to be given out to anyone these days, the BAFTA is a much more hard to come by award and much of Hollywood were here on our shores for the occasion!
I popped on my tried and trusted D&G gown-this time a deep midnight blue one- and gathered up the length in my arms to splish splosh along the red carpet outside the Royal Opera House in my ballet pump flats before popping on my heels in a very undignified manner at the entrance of the venue. I mean I’m not going to be the random nobody on candid camera the day after having slipped in the slushy snowy soggy carpet!.
The turn out was stunning, as you’d expect. All the great and the good from very adept host Stephen Fry, actors Ben Affleck and Bradley Cooper, (these 2 were hanging out together a lot and had every female and male gushing with lust I kid you not!), director Sam Mendes, the ever ravishing George Clooney (us ladies were spoilt!), director Quentin Tarantino who I just wanted to talk to but like the music industry bigwig Lyor Cohen has that really big, intimidating presence. I now do talk to Lyor, I didn’t pluck up the courage for Quentin. Some you win-some you lose. I did however manage to get introduced to the adorable Ben Affleck (J Lo really lost out here!), he was charming and by the time he’d been onstage collecting a couple awards for his film Argo I was in love from afar. Especially when he made his ‘’thank you for allowing me my second act’’ speech. We all melted. Billy Connelly had we and my mate wetting ourselves as he described the award as a ‘’death mask on a stick’’. Samuel L Jackson and Kevin Spacey were on good form and I didn’t even kick Samuel as he walked past after hating his character so much in DJango.

JASMINE AT THE STYLE AWARDS

Then it was the ELLE Style Awards at The Savoy, I always dread fashion events as I feel paranoid with all the dark gothic looking black clothed people everywhere. They always give me that little side eye sneer when I turn up wearing a bright colour-this time red. But this time I was in good company as a few guests decided to ‘’shine bright like a diamond’’. It was a lovely very cool evening with radio 1’s Nick Grimshaw hosting. I hardly know anyone from the fashion scene so I was excited to recognise actor Chris Tucker, rocker Ronnie Wood, singer Katy B, designer Stella McCartney looked tired, rockers daughter Peaches Geldof looked gorgeous, pregnant and chic, MTV presenter Laura Whitmore in a bright yellow mini dress, actress Naomi Harris in a burnt orange long dress, Sophie Ellis Bexter in her usual pretty floral frock look, Daisy Lowe, Claudia Winkleman –always a very chic dresser, worst fashion look of the night went to Gemma Cairney in a frumpy quite unflattering knee length dress.
No one was surprised that a female focused magazine awarded Best Actor Award to Bradley Cooper (presented by Harvey Weinstein) and as much as I like to drone on about Emeli Sandé being everywhere all the time I was secretly pleased she won Best Music Act. Best International Designer went to Stella McCartney, which was well deserved. I think her hard work keeping her mothers legacy for sustainable clothes and veganism is commendable and she truly works her ass off unlike so many other children of superstars that turn up to all these events but yet are known for nothing but their famous parent. I’m afraid the rest of the company I knew little about as they were mostly designers and models whom I’d never heard of. I did spot singers Laura Mvula and Delilah sitting together though-both striking ladies with great music.

JASMINE WITH LAURA MVULA STRAIGHT AFTER HER ALBUM LITENING AND PERFORMANCE!

The very next day I was honoured to witness the birth launch of another future superstar at West London’s SARM STUDIOS where singer Laura Mvula had invited her nearest dearest (her mum was looking proud in the house) and a few specially chosen industry folks to hear her new album ‘’sing to the moon’’. This young lady has been on all the national chat shows recently and in newspapers as their one to watch this year so I was intrigued to meet her. Laura hails from just outside of Birmingham and was originally born Laura Douglas. Mvula (pronounced mmm-vula) is her married name- from Zimbabwe. It was apparent on arrival that something very special was about to go down. The studios security was extra tight as the phone and gadget police insisted on taking our phones before we even stepped through the door! (No one can be trusted these days-the popes own right hand man was leaking documents not too long ago!). Anyhoo-I digress. Once inside the big heavy secret studio door barmen were offering out wine, spirits and huge delicious cupcakes adorned with Laura’s name. There were even macaroons scattered around. We grabbed a huge sofa before all the seats got taken and settled in.

JAY DAVIDSON (DEF JAM/BBC) , ANNELIESE HARMON(V2/MTV/MWAH), JASMINE, JODIE DALMEDA (SBMG/VIRGIN UNITE), COOKIE PRYCE (COOKIE CREW/MUSIC MARKETING)….GRAB A SOFA AT SARM STUDIOS!

Manager Kwame Kwaten (who has a huge history with British music acts Shola Ama, D’Influence, Radiohead, Master Shortie, Rumer etc), welcomed us and asked us to help ourselves to food in the adjoining room. The abundance of Caribbean food was mouth watering. From local Caribbean fooderie Jay Dee’s we gorged on chicken, rice and peas, dumplings and more. Next Kwame thanked everyone in the room for their support of Laura and then introduced the main man Colin Barlow from RCA records who upon hearing one single song by Laura brought the lawyers in to sign her up. He spoke in a very real manner explaining why he found aura unique and admired her courage and brave new sound.
By the time Laura took to the keyboards to perform her song ‘’She’’ we were ready for a full hour of amazing audio luxury.
Laura is petite, pretty and very strong vocally. She was wearing fierce vertiginous high ankle boots, a dress and a fabulous big fur coat. She has a symmetrical clean sculpted look that made her look like she’s just stepped off the catwalk. She lightening the atmosphere by quipping ‘’as my grandma says you better sound good!’’ She has a calm self-assurance about her that’s mesmerising. The track was slow but she carried it in a room of very close listeners. Her vocals are strong and mesmerising. After the first live performance she played us the rest of her album. The experience was akin to a dream. The tracks are all very mesmerising with an old skool Hollywood movie vibe. The tracks have huge layered musical production with drums, strings and more feeling like a film soundtrack. The lyrics suggest a young girl hatching into the world independently and having to deal with life. The album feels like a whole story. It’s very personal. Made me think of Nina Simone, Jill Scott and Janelle Monae. My favourites were ‘’green garden’’ and ‘’I don’t know what the weather will be’’. There was a sense that we were extremely lucky to have witnessed such an intimate evening with such a soon to be huge star. As we chatted afterwards she confided to me that the personal inspirations behind her lyrics were her brother and sister-who had accompanied her by playing in her band on the night. Her manager told me he’s not encouraging her to move down to London laughing ‘’if that’s the kind of music Birmingham encourages her to make she needs to stay there!’’ This young Birmingham woman has Grammy written all over her music.

JASMINES JUICE featuring PJ MORTON

JASMINE WITH PJ MORTON!
Happy Valentines Day readers! I love you! Do you still get excited about Valentines Day or are you an older cynical reader that is more turned on by other things in life?
You know you’re getting old when you get excited about renovating your bathroom! Yes I was all-excitable when the lady from the bathroom company came over to measure up my lav for a new suite. I primed the house as if my mother-in-law were popping round LOL!

As you get older many of us hard beaten entertainment industry types also tend to reach out to pro-social causes to balance out our previously over the top, opulent, rock & roll lives. Honestly, when I say OTT I’m not exaggerating. My career has seen me swanning off to NYC to conduct a 5 minute interview with Madonna, spending a week instead of 2 days at Disneyland Florida cos Justin Timberlake was too upset to do press during his break up with Britney which happened on the 1st day I arrived so I was asked if I minded staying a few more days until he was up for it with his band N-Sync, taking a private jet from Sweden to Paris with Snoop and Puffy just so they could have some jet TV action in their tour diary, flying to Cuba for a week with Jamelia to film her Making of the Video-2 days filming, 4 days ‘’preparing’’, spending a long weekend in St Tropez on what Puffy called his boat (but was a 100 foot yacht) to talk about his latest fragrance, going to Jamaica to watch Beyonce perform at a festival, 15 minutes filming 3 days preparing, and so on. When you call that work and acknowledge the cost, air miles and reason for it all it eventually makes you feel guilty. Guilty of killing the environment with air pollution, guilty that you’re being paid to speak to superstars whilst others wake daily dreading their jobs. It all adds up to a lot of guilt. So when you get a chance to give back post party lifestyle you grab it with both hands and feet.
Much of the work I do now therefore combines broadcasting with a (CSR) cooperate social responsibility angle. This week that included attending AN RBS FINANCE COMMUNITY INVESTMENT EVENT called “CREATING A LIFE OF LOVE & COMPASSION FOR CHILDREN” in support of Nelson Mandela children’s fund. Also encouraging more young people who want to get into the TV industry to join up with the RTS Futures organization who can help them meet the right TV experts that can help guide their career paths. theres so much out there to help people, much of it is wasted as people don’t know about it. Search and ye shall find!
Next there was much buzz in the music industry’s inner circle about an act that’s about to blow called PJ Morton. Morton is an American writer and producer as well as a solo musician who is the keyboardist in pop rock band Maroon 5. In the past he’s won a Grammy for his song writing and production of India.Arie’s “Interested”. He’s also won numerous awards and accolades in the business and been noticed by AR Rahman (composer for Slumdog Millionaire), who asked him to contribute “Sajna” to the soundtrack and movie for the Vince Vaughn comedy Couples Retreat. As if that’s not enough he’s produced and written for musicians such as Jermaine Dupri, LL Cool J, Jagged Edge, Monica, India.Arie and more. This is a very well noted route –from song writer to star- that stars have taken in recent years to make it to the top themselves. Jessie J and Kanye West are great examples.
Last year he released his first solo recording, “Following My First Mind”, on Lil Wayne’s Young Money label. Adam Levine was on the lead single, “Heavy”. Now he’s about to release his first YMCMB full-length album titled New Orleans on May 14th .So when record industry maverick lady Vivian Scott Chew reached out from the States to invite me to his London showcase I was most intrigued to hear more and meet the talented man myself.
PJ’s showcase was held at a London nightclub that’s been around for years-Borderline- one of the few with a great stage, acoustics and has still kept its name from 2 decades ago!. Most clubs around now have been around for decades and I’ve seen them go through up to 4 name changes! In the house on the night were former Cookie Crew member-Cookie, BBC marketing’s Jay Davidson, Warner Music’s Taponeswa Mavunga, TV editors, A&R reps, record label folk and more. The great and the good in the scene were not disappointed with PJ’s live set-he is a very unique, impressive young man. He played keyboards, sang, rapped, spoke, smiled. His live set was polished and took us on a journey of calm relaxed tracks; sing along fun melodies and straight up jump around club bangers.
Its always natural to compare new acts to others when describing them to people but honestly this act went from reminding me of a little of many of the greats like Stevie Wonder, John Legend and Kanye West. Importantly he was unique in his style. He spoke to the audience; saw us all, had that gift that makes you feel he’s speaking directly to you and by the end of the set had the crowd high and sweaty. When I went backstage to meet him his crew it was the most relaxed pre-show dressing room I’d ever been in. they were chilling, happy, chatting, warming up. The energy was quietly confident and PJ was welcoming, friendly and chatty. Just a really nice guy. no wonder he’s worked with the best. They want him on their team. Lil Wayne and Baby don’t sign up anyone. They recognise talent, nurture it and set it free when it’s ready. PJ Morton is ready. He’s been real! He’ll be on the road again with Maroon 5 for their US and Euro tours. He has his own opening slot in each city and will be playing the O2 Arena June 23 and 24th. like a breath of fresh air in a world where many claim to be real musicians but aren’t this young man is going to do some lethal damage to the charts! watch him blow!

JASMINE’S JUICE- RE-EE-WINDING WITH CRAIG DAVID! THE UK’S BIGGEST MALE THAT WENT GLOBAL RETURNS!

JASMINE WITH CRAIG DAVID- JANUARY 2013.

A busy week with everyone preparing for the impending Brit Awards. Labrinth threw a personal pre-Brit dinner at his restaurant in North London. Choreographer to the stars/ musician Royston had his ‘’all black everything’’ birthday party. Up and coming blonde dj twins, the Mac Twin’s began their djing residency at the W Hotel and I finally managed to watch Quentin Tarantino’s much debated film Django

So I get a request to meet with one of the biggest male acts the UK scene has ever produced-Mr Craig David. He’s holed up at the Bagioni Hotel in Kensington meeting and greeting press and talking about his upcoming music. As I wonder how much he will have changed since I last worked alongside him, I am led into a grand room where Craig is sat at the end finishing off a press phoner and immediately all his fabulous Miami tweets about sun, gyms and eating healthy have appeared like an apparition in front of my eyes. Craig is bronze, fit looking and his face is sculpted and chiselled in a way that seems very mature and manly in comparison to the early days when he was simply slicker than your average. In a nutshell, he looks happy and relaxed and in control. We greet, chit chat for a minute and catch up before getting to it…
I had to applaud him on the focused training he constantly champions on twitter. Its called eatcleantraindirty and when I’m jumping around at my virgin active class and eating as interesting a meal that’s healthy that I can and hating on Craig’s always half naked, uber fit, sun streamed pics from Miami I try not to hate. Really. I do. But I hate. . He laughs ‘’Environment helps. When its cutting cold outside its hard in the UK to maintain a focus on training. But the place I am in my life I wanted a different result and I was doing the same thing. So I changed what I was working with. It’s the same with music. You have to get up early in the morning for interviews, promotion and the rest. If my mind and body can be stronger I have to win’’.
My career journey has mirrored Craig’s over the past couple of decades. I first met him when he won a competition to write a b-side to boy band Damages song. Then he became a fast garage star with chart hit after hit and sell out tours all across the world. I saw him at the Royal Albert Hall once-it was a fascinating show. Then numerous MTV News interviews later I made a Making of the video with Craig and Kano for their track ‘’this is the girl’’ in L.A. next I had a ‘’stay in your lane’’ moment with my MTV USA colleagues as we fought over filming his MTV CRIBS show here in North London- a shoot I had set up and nearly had taken away. We certainly have history!

JASMINE WITH CRAIG DURING MTV CRIBS FILMING.
It’s been a while since we saw him here in the UK so what’s brought him back? Well a world tour and a new album no less! Craig revealed ‘’Aside from making my mum and dad really proud and happy, it’s the accolades like the MTV 2nd greatest album ever after Michael Jackson and landmark moments like that that have stood out for me. I’ve learnt to not live in the past. I’m not the kid that made born to do it’’. The essence of writing songs excites me but I don’t like to reference my old material anymore. If you want that itunes 99p is you. Music stars get into a routine, they make the album, do the press, do the tours and start the cycle everywhere and there’s no free time. But I wanted to break the routine and live life and now come back into it’’.

Craig owes his healthy sunkissed toned look to his new life out in Miami. By speaking with him I got the impression that he felt the UK was distracting and negative and he needed a break at a certain period in his life. ‘’Every time I went between Miami and London, flying back into Heathrow was gloomy and flat. I decided to swap it around. I moved to Miami and sold my place here and now that I have no attachment to London I love exploring it as a tourist. I can now see why Americans want to visit London’’.
I know Craig is generous and giving- he once bought his manager Colin Lester-an Aston Martin. He likes the good life! I teased Craig about his instagram photos of his sports car outside his crib that just looked like a fantasy life. He smiled ‘’ do you know what Jas; I bought my dream car recently -the Ferrari. When I was in Miami at this steakhouse I after dinner I left and jumped into the car and it wouldn’t start and I started to get stressed about people seeing me unable to start the car and then I sat back and realised. It was a moment. I thought I am here in Miami, in my dream car, what’s the worst-case scenario here? Its one night of partying you’re missing compared to hundreds more nights in your life, so I embraced the sitting back and enjoying the moment’’.

JASMINE WITH CRAIG DURING MAKING OF THE VIDEO.
Craig’s new album is imminent. He’s been in the studio a while and the new material is tentatively titled Following My Intuition. The really intriguing thing about his new music is that Craig has reconnected with his old music Midas touch making partner- Anthony Marshall (who used to be a part of the UK music producers Ignorants) at Snap Studios. Craig explained the link up ‘’My manager Colin saw Marshall in a club and Marshall played him some new stuff and Colin suggested we connect again’’
Craig and Marshall have all the equipment and necessities you’d expect in a music studio; keyboards, tracks, mics, a grand piano where they try out all their songs and… immense amounts of chicken from Mr Cee’s Caribbean food shop in North London! There is one thing that Craig doesn’t like in the studio though ‘’We have Fifa competitions and the loser has to eat chocolate as punishment….Marshall knows with my training and attention to healthy eating that eating vast amounts of chocolates like BOUNTY would kill me mentally , so I’d be sitting there sweating during Fifa dreading the calories I was amount to have to take in!’’.
Fun and games aside, I for one am ecstatic that he and Marshall are making music together again cos I hated when Craig went all American with his production teams a couple of albums in. after all, why change an already great, award winning, no1 hitting formula?

JASMINE WITH CRAIG DURING THE EARLY YEARS AT MTV NEWS.

Like me, Craig hates the idea of an artist’s album being full of collaborations as it simply ends up sounding like a compilation album so you wont find loads of duets on the new material. However do remember it was Craig that gave Rita Ora one of her first breaks by duetting with her on his track ‘’where’s your love’’ so its not Jay Z who spotted her first!
Craig states ‘’ I follow her success and am so happy to watch her grow in to the performer that I always could see she would be. When she sang on Awkward on my Trust me Album there was the voice of a Mariah in a young girl that as she grows is maturing vocally and mentally. I remember telling her that it’s just about believing in your talent and being diligent in working hard to showcase…she’s done all those things and is reaping the rewards. I’m beyond happy for her’’.
Really Young music lovers might not remember this but at one point Craig was one of the UK’s most successful male solo stars of all time and most certainly not recognised as much as he should have been. He has sold over 13 million albums, achieved multi-platinum status in more than 20 countries, amassed numerous awards from around the world but many of us still feel he were snubbed out of a lot of British awards that you more than deserved. Looking back on that time I can see that he was definitely having the last laugh living a very fun, fancy life. The MTV CRIBS show I made with him and my MTV USA crew was a highlight as was Craig on the front cover of Vibe magazine!
The irony about the way the music industry has changed for youth in the UK now is that urban music is the modern day pop music and always in the charts, but hardly any of the current TeamUK acts will be truly international the way Craig is. Craig has no.1 singles and albums globally, so it’s not a huge surprise that his tour kicks off in Australia this March. When pushed Craig admits that from the UK scene he really likes Angel and thinks he would go far internationally with his real voice, accent and song hooks!
Speaking of international issues I reminded Craig about Drakes first show here in the UK a few years back when Drake had gushed on and on about how much he loved Craig’s music and had been influenced by him. I also noted that contrary to belief, Drake was not the first Jewish urban act to make it big-Craig also takes that crown. When drake bumped into Craig in Miami not too long ago, Drake had the same respect and admiration for Craig that he once had. Its official readers…Craig is back. Get on board or get out of the way cos his second coming is going to be bigger than his debut journey!
