BBC MANDELA LECTURES…BRENDA, AKALA, WINNIE, SABBIYAH, JASMINE.

To end a week of diversity focused events, the BBC hosted Mandela Lectures- three speakers, three ideas, One quote. Where founder of The Hip Hop Shakespeare Company – Akala, exec director of Oxfam international – Winnie Byanyma and philosopher and writer Sabbiyah Pervez, were asked to talk about Nelson Mandelas quote ‘’it always seems impossible until its done’’. Legendary broadcaster Brenda Emmanus hosted the intimate gathering on the BBC top floor at their multi million new building New Broadcasting House.

Winnie was a calm, paced empowering speaker. She made parallel comparisons between Mandela and her organization Oxfam highlighting that they both stand in solidarity with lone men and women. She implored

‘’I have seen first hand that small weapons can inflict horror. It took ten years of hard campaigning of Oxfam supporters to build public support for what we knew what was right. Lives will be saved now cos there’s an international law and we can make change’’. Oxfams vision is a just world without poverty where all are treated equally. This new world is within reach. Nelson Mandela taught us with willpower and mobilising to stand together we can change the world”.

She reminded us that the 85richest people in the world own the same as a third of the world
She informed us ‘’Exclusion and discrimination creates deep social problems. It keeps poor people poor and powerless. Here in the UK the gap between rich and poor is back at the great depression degree in 1920s. This is sixth richest country in the world yet people here are turning to food banks. Is this morally defensible?’’
She continued ‘‘we need goals for ending poverty in every country. We need to crack down on financial secrecy from banks and tax havens. This is money that should be going towards lifting the poor out of poverty. We need decent jobs for young people and to remove barriers to rising for women’’.

It was inspiring to hear about her own journey where she revealed

‘’I fled Edi Amin’s regime in Uganda in the 60s. I found asylum here in the UK and now run a huge company. Everyday I stand on shoulders of giants. A young African refugee like myself has been allowed to thrive. Be part of the movement for social justice. That’s what Nelson Mandela is saying to us. “It always seems impossible until it’s done”.

bbc mandela

Sabbiyah was very fast paced in her speech and her passion was clear.

‘’In the first generation of UK Muslims were told right from the beginning what they can and can’t do. They can’t let go of the old rules or they’ll lose their identity, so us in the next generation has conflict. Asian women are brought up to feel inferior to their brothers. If you’re constantly being told your only role is to serve as a mum and wife how can u grow as an individual. The Muslim youth are very marginalised. They’re all terrorists!’’

Finally highly articulate, knowledgeable Akala finished the evening with his very many deep facts and stats to blow your mind about black history around the globe. He spoke so fast that I had barely been able to take in one fascinating fact before he hit us with another. He noted that

‘’Nelson Mandela was in prison for almost as long as I have lived. It’s easy to view Nelson Mandela’s story from cinema seats. However not one single corporation after slavery ended was forced to pay out reparations. South African bank heads still kept their jobs after apartheid ended. To this day whites still control most of the African land. The ending of political apartheid is to be celebrated. But apartheid did not end. It was altered but not shattered. Currently, The third world is literally paying with their lives for the super rich of the first world’’.

Akala should be a regular on Question Time.

GIGGS LUNCH

Giggs hsak2_edit1
GIGGS AND JASMINE AT LUNCH.

I joined Giggs one afternoon for an extended lunch where we wandered around Whole Foods (as I assumed no-one would recognize and hassle him there) and searched meticulously for dairy and vegan food for his son who is allergic to food containing them. Giggs spent ages walking round and round aisles, questioning all the store assistants, asking intricate questions about what his son might like. One assistant was particularly helpful. Turns out after we finished eating that he was a massive Giggs fan after he tweeted him ‘’hope the vegan cake goes down well bro ’’ lol. I say ‘’after we finished eating, but alas, it was only I eating as Giggs being the staunch catholic that he is, was fasting for lent. Yes. Really!

DOWNING ST INSPIRATIONAL WOMEN RECEPTION

JD DS1
JASMINE AT 10 DOWNING STREET.

I ended my week at 10 Downing Street after I received an invitation from the Prime Minster to join him in celebrating many of the UKs most inspiring women. It was a very empowering evening in the iconic address where we all eagerly took photos with the most famous front door in history.
JD DS4

We were offered a fabulous yet simple array of refreshments. All the attendees were from a variety of worlds. Campaigners, heads of charities, leading businesswomen, news editors, Joan Collins, Carol Vorderman, Eve Pollard, TV chef Lorraine Pascal, newsreaders like Fiona Bruce, supermodels like Erin O Connor, Olympians and more.
DS INVITE

David Cameron flew back all the way from his meeting with Angela Merkel in Brussels to be with us as he didn’t want to disappoint ‘’the most important lady in his life’’- the elegant, sophisticated Sam Cam. He made a lovely welcome speech thanking us all for being who we were, doing what we do and being inspirations to other women. He emphasized that

”as the UK was the only country to have fulfilled its foreign aid commitment to the rest of the world this past year, that in the next year we have a right and moral duty to lead on stopping female violence and discrimination globally”

. He firmly focused on female genital mutilation and violence towards women and we were all on board by the time he finished.
DS SIGN

The UK has our own issues socially and politically, but I think if we’re all brutally honest, no-one could say we don’t live in one of the greatest countries in the world where women are allowed freedom of speech, education and many other things our fellow sisters globally do not. High five Mister Cameron!

GEORGE MICHAEL- PIC COURTESY CAROLINE TRUE.

The invitation stated ‘’George Michael cordially invites you to a very special playback of his new album ‘Symphonica’ at the Hamiltons Gallery, Mayfair. So off I went to go hear the latest album by the whites man with soul that has us all screaming along to his teen pop hits as well as grown adults solo soulful smashes across three decades.
The ‘Symphonica’ album was a labour of love, which fulfilled Georges long-standing ambition of showcasing his extraordinary vocals alongside a symphony orchestra in some of Europe’s finest, most prestigious venues.
I could tell by the types of older, more serous journalists from ‘’quality press’’ that this wasn’t just any old playback of an album. It was a breakfast session inclusive of a Wolesley style spread of mini pan au chocolate, croissants, fancy pastries, mini salmon and cream cheese bagels and good strong coffee.

Symphonica is Georges sixth solo album and will be released on March 17. In the vein of Frank Sinatra and modern day pretenders to the swing throne like Jamie Cullum, Robbie and Michael Buble, George has mixed it up on this album and selected songs by some of his favourite artists to cover.

He’s acknowledged respectfully by the top tier of music players and won Grammy Awards, Ivor Novellos, Brits and MTV Awards, but his coolest prize for me, is that In the highly regarded black music community, George Michael is also so loved he gets what we call a ‘’ghetto pass’’. Weddings blast his hits, Singers sing ‘’careless whisper’’ at karaoke, rappers adore him and pump him in their rides, basket ballers play him to focus, and carnival sets always showcase reggae and calypso versions of George Michael classics. He’s sung with Stevie wonder, was the first white male vocalist to sing with Aretha and proving the younger hip-hop generation co-signed him early, even Mary j Blige bounced on a track with him.

It’s no coincidence he has respect from strong ballsy characters. He may be shy but never one not to own his own mistakes, call out injustices and stand strong with his life choices. Having gone up against the gigantic machine that is Sony Records he fought a battle worthy of a gladiator and came out still singing. He caused political mischief years before Kanye with ‘’shoot the dog’’, which poked fun at George Bush and Tony Blair. He spoke out against the Iraq war. Turns out he was right all along. George has had several musical lifetimes away from the scene where he’s made no music and still returned from the ashes like a phoenix with new no 1 albums. Never count this player out.

The joint Royal Television Society / BBC event ‘In Conversation With Baroness Doreen Lawrence: In The Eye Of a Media Storm’ was an in depth discussion with Baroness Lawrence exploring what lessons TV and the media should learn from her family’s story.
Held at the Radio Theatre at the BBC’s New Broadcasting House, It was presented by Mark Daly, the BBC reporter who revealed racism within the police in the documentary ‘The Undercover Policeman’ and has made documentaries on Stephen Lawrence.

The event was part of a series of events across the BBC called ‘Reflect and Represent’, exploring how diversity can be a powerful creative driver. The room was scattered with influential power players like Pat Younge (former BBC), Marcus Ryder (BBC Scotland), Ade Rawcliffe (Channel 4), Michelle Matherson (former BBC now ITV) and RTS new chief executive Theresa Wise.
doreen seated

From the start the chat was lively with Doreen revealing that Daily Mail editor Paul Dacre only turned around to support her families fight for justice after he realised Stephens father/ Doreen’s husband Neville had done some building work at his home in the past. Doreen added that the early lies of the police were a blessing in disguise ‘’If that original police officer hadn’t lied I wouldn’t have been so angry to pursue justice and there may have never been an enquiry into my son’s death”.
In Conversation with Baroness Doreen Lawrence
Copyright Paul Hampartsoumian 2014

The same day of this conversation, the BBC were launching a new scheme with the Stephen Lawrence Trust to give 20 young BAME (black and minority ethnic) apprentices an opportunity into the media. “Its great but should’ve happened years ago” Doreen hit out. My own question is ‘would there be any real progression routes for these 20 apprentices or would they be flung back out a few months down the line?’ I guess time will tell.
There was one moment where I wanted to stand up and applaud as Baroness Lawrence emphasised that all the diversity quota initiatives weren’t working as she glanced around the theatre at the camera crews and stated “look around us here today…your cameramen here at the BBC today are all white-this doesn’t reflect our society make up fairly!”

Then presenter Mark started an area of questioning about Doreens relationship with her now estranged husband Neville, that a few of us found awkward and unnecessary. Doreen responded

‘’I’m not being disrespectful to Neville but people found it easier to talk to him back then than me because I asked the right questions and didn’t let them off the hook, he didn’t. My relationship with Neville is still very strained, but here’s still no one else in my life lol”.

To which Mark responded ‘’do you think that’s because some men might find you intimidating?’’ It took all my willpower not to jump up in protest!. I found this offensive. Does being a strong woman mean you’re intimidating? Or is it because she is a strong woman of colour? Would he have suggested a man was intimidating in the same situation?
A colleague and myself approached Mark post conversation to ask him about this and voice our displeasure. He stated that Doreen herself had suggested that maybe it was because men found her intimidating in one of their previous conversations. We informed him that then he should have put that in context to the audience, as it hadn’t come across positively. He accepted this.

Doreen did say that whilst the media get bashed about a lot (especially in recent years with the Levinson enquiry), that

‘‘the media played an important role in keeping the enquiry and our story alive. The corruption was deep in the Met at the time. I hate the attention and media as I’m a very private person but I do publicly what I do as I know I need to do it. I’d like to be a voice for people who don’t have a voice. In the House of Lords I will speak out about things that matter. Things haven’t improved since 20 years back. How can police get away with saying Mark Duggan was killed lawfully when he had no weapon? How was Joy Gardner killed with 15m meters of tape wrapped around her mouth?”

Pat Younge asked whether she felt the world was a safer place today for her grandchildren. “I question whether the worlds a safer place for my grand children. My granddaughter told another child that she wasn’t pleased with “its one of you who killed my uncle Stephen, that shocked me as we don’t want one of our children growing up with an unjust, incorrect sense of the world around them and had to sit her down explain that this was not how life was”.
After over two decades of campaigning Doreen admitted, “I am tired but if there’s a chance of seeing the rest of those men convicted I’d like to see it through- it was joint enterprise. And as long as I still have breath I will keep on fighting”.
A moving and personal story from a mother that has fought the fight of a gladiator to see justice done for her beloved son.

BLAZE AT THEPEACOCK THEATRE.

Four years ago I went to see a theatre show that incorporated hip hop dance and music with amazing stage sets, graphics and lighting. It as back at the peacock theatre in central London this month so I had to go again as I knew they would have updated the music and cast. Using dancers from all across the globe who bring their own unique style and personality to the solo and unison choreography sets, it was a great night and I cant recommend it more if you get a chance to catch it across the UK on tour. the dance sections are serious with scattered humour but the standard is high and will you holding your breath and gasping in delight like the rest of the families and dance lovers who were there.

PIXAR AT ROYAL ALBERT HALL.

Arts and culture mystros have always liked to juxtapose various arts to create new moments.
The art of ballet brings together classical music, dance and staged sets. Gymnastic acrobats and outdoor architecture formed the free running art of parkour. Last month, I attended a recital of poetry from young; inner city youth amongst the Turner painting at Tate Britain called Poetry Luv. This past week I attended the UK premiere of Pixar in Concert at the Royal Albert Hall which brings together ground-breaking animated films beloved by children and adults alike, with the music that is in these animated movies-but performed live. From Toy Story to Brave, animation powerhouse Pixar has redefined the cinematic landscape over the past 19 years, creating gob-smacking movies, but amidst the visual wizardry, one aspect of the movies that sometimes get overlooked is the music that punctuates all the animated action.

No longer. The UK premiere of Pixar in Concert at the Royal Albert Hall brought an audience from all walks of life and those timeless scores to magical life, with a show combining stunning footage from all 13 Pixar films (which have all been written by just four composers!). With live accompaniment from not just any band, but the nearly 100 strong members of the (RPO) Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra!
pixar

Celebrating the music from films like Toy Story, Cars, Finding Nemo, Wall-E and Up, the soundtracks always began with the orchestra for a few seconds before the visuals appeared on the giant central screen above them. The difference of course is that there are no character voices or dialogue from the films, so we were viewing simple pictures and breathtaking sound.
PIX

One of the opening sets kicked off with a Finding Nemo tranquil underwater track, combining flutes and guitars. It was so beautiful I had my own eureka moment as I decided there and then that if I ever had the option of choosing a piece of music to die to, this was the piece I’d want to hear on my final journey. As well as a Dublin date, Pixar in concert is happening globally all throughout 2014.

BEING MARY JANE
BEING MARY JANE
Have any of you caught the new BET series Being Mary Jane? I recorded a few shows at a time so I could fast forward through ad breaks and have a girly night in with my mates with a bottle of rose. We were hooked from the start! Mary Jane’s life is a parallel of so many of ours, but a few shows in I wasn’t sure if I liked her life decisions and choices although I empathise with her situation. A great series that has me totally hooked and is very right now for the new generation of media world loving sassy ladies and our dilemmas in relationships!

JASMINES JUICE- House Of Commons Royal Television Society Dinner, R&B Superstars Wembley show, Big Music Project, SKY News!

PIC COURTESY PAUL H.

HOUSE OF COMMONS OFCOM RTS DINNER
I started the week at an event at the House of Commons in the Members Dining Room, at the RTS (Royal Television Society) All Party Parliamentary Group Dinner in honour of Dame Colette Bowe, The outgoing chair of Ofcom who was stepping down after five years in the role.

OFCOM are the office for communications in the UK and the Independent regulator and competition authority for all the UK communications industries. They regulate the TV, radio, phone and postal services citizens and consumers use at home and in business, and are the body you contact if you’re not happy with anything you see on UK media channels. Viewers and listeners often complain to OFCOM about programmes they’ve seen or heard on TV and radio, so it’s a huge responsibility for Dame Colette Bowe and her team.

I arrived 30 minutes early to get through the rigorous security check at the main gate, which is akin to airport security for obvious reasons. By the time I’d had my photo taken, removed and replaced my shoes, belt, jacket and coat and made my way through the grand, cold stone hall I was just in time to join the reception drinks where I spotted my fellow RTS Futures committee, Channel 4 head David Abraham, photographer to the stars Paul H, Lord Patten from the BBC Trust, one of the top women in TV- Sophie Turner-Laing, Baroness Floella Benjamin OBE and BBC Scotlands Marcus Ryder.

Dinner was a lot of fun with discussions both serious and frivolous about current TV and big screen content accompanied by a sumptuous feast of roasted lamb, spiced chocolate truffle with caramel corn and traditional after diner coffee. A fascinating discussion between Sir Peter Bazalgette and Dame Colette about her time at OFCOM and thoughts on its future followed dinner.
We all listened intently as Dame Colette revealed that technology has totally changed news content and the things viewers are now more likely to accept on their TV screens, especially after the Woolwich tragedy.

Dame Colette stated ‘’People are more tolerant now on what they’ll accept. We received around 700 complaints about news shows giving this content a platform. Some said it was about child protection and this content should never have been shown, that the Murderers were given a platform. But in our opinion, no broadcaster had overstepped the mark. It was a seminal moment in UK TV history. Is was in the public interest”

Its OFCOMs job to regulate content on TV and Dame Colette was more than realistic about what is possible in todays social media driven society ‘’I feel strongly about kidding parents that someone somewhere can protect your kids from the big bad world online cos they can’t. No regulator can. You have to do what is possible. You can’t take on a job that’s undoable. There are limits to regulatory action’’. Ofcom works with “the art of the possible,” and “there are limits to regulatory action,” Bowe admitted.
When it comes to viewing content illegally online Dame Colette was on the side of the industry who have been losing money to piracy for years ‘’Piracy. I object to the word Piracy. It’s actually stealing’’.

A fascinating chance to hear first hand about the trials and challenges facing our broadcast regulators on a daily basis in 2014. Good luck to the next chair at OFCOM who steps into Dame Colettes shoes. Technology is moving media so fast that who knows what further changes will occur in the next five years. An undoable job? Sounds like it.

On arrival backstage in the Bassbuds VIP lounge I bumped into Tinchy Stryder who has new music coming very soon. He told me he’s evolved with the times. I think we all know he’s a master chameleon what with going from grimy RinseFM mic spitter to pop chart star whenever he needs to. Look out for his new music. Also backstage was Lisa Maffia who persuaded me to have my nails done in their VIP nail booth where nail technician Roxanne Campbell took amazing care of my fingers- a week later they were still looking groomed to perfection!
WRETCH WEMBLEY
WRETCH32 BACKSTAGE AT R&B SUPERSTARS.

The main arena was buzzing and as usual Mike Anthony, Treble Tee and their Rampage sound system were keeping the crowd on their feet dancing and whooping along to sets, during the gap between each act when the stagehands were resetting equipment and staging. There was a jungle, slow jams, bashment and hip-hop set. The crowd was up for doing the candy dance en masse which is always a breath taking vision to see thousands moving in unison.
TOTAL
TOTAL ATTEMPT THEIR BEST MIMING AS A TWOSOME.

One of my fave bands, TONI, TONE, TONY brought the show to a great midway climax before girl band Total made it crash. I say girl band but there were only two of them there, clearly mostly miming which was a disappointment. En Vogue then came and smashed it with the best performance of the night. Their costumes, vocals and set were a rounded 10/10. They sang and took it back to church, their costumes clearly had some thought put into them and their dance choreography was strong and slick. They brought the house down!
The Blacksteet story is a complicated one but in a nutshell, founding members Teddy Riley and Chauncey Hannibal fell out years ago. Chauncey took Teddy to court to have full rights over the name of the group and won. So now, when Chauncey performs with his line up the band is called Blackstreet. When Teddy performs with his line up they are officially called Blackstreet2. The both of them need to sort it cos I’ve seen both line-ups perform this past few months, and whilst Chaunceys was stronger vocally and with presence, without Teddy it just misses something. Please guys- bury the hatchet- life’s too short!

BIG MUSIC PROJECT AT O2
BME1
(Left to right) Musicians, Plan B, MNEK and Will Kennard from Chase & Status with Dean Joseph, aged 17, from Maidenhead (2nd right) during the launch of The Big Music Project

Hundreds of youth engagement schemes exist across the UK to attempt to help youth gain employment and life skills. a huge proportion of these use the power of music to work. I have been asked to attend, oversee, sit on boards and advise on many of these but I always leave feeling frustrated at their lack of longevity and real progression to actually change lives.
The TV show I exec produce- LONDON360- actually makes real life changes for young people who want to work in media from diverse backgrounds and this week I attended the launch of something that parrellels this in UK music.
The launch of The Big Music Project funded by the Big Lottery Fund- and delivered by Global, The BPI and UK Youth. The launch at the 02 arena in London saw over 150 youth from all across the uk (bussed in to be sworn in as hub ambassadors. These 150 are tasked with mentoring 10 of their peers in their city hubs across the UK in music related activities, talented shows and more.
BME SLIDE

£4 million Lottery funded cash has gone into this and aims to not just make young people more confident and gain employment skills, but also encourage them into a music career that isn’t the music star or producer. it highlights the other hundreds of jobs that exist in music from rigger, roadie, fire tech, jingle writer and so on. This area will also cover training on marketing, social networking, recording, production, PR, promotion, legal affairs and other elements that will help talented acts rise to the next level.
TheBigMusicProject-6
BIG DOG GEOFF TAYLOR SPEAKS.

Chief Executive of the BPI and The BRIT Awards, Geoff Taylor, enthused: “We’re really excited about the opportunities that The Big Music Project will create for young people who never dared to dream that the music industry would come direct to their doorstep with the skills, contacts, and reach that this initiative offers. We’ll give talented young musicians the chance to compete and perform in front of industry stars and decision-makers. And we’ll offer internships in record companies, provide work experience at the BRIT Awards, and signpost young people towards real training opportunities, so that they may one day find themselves working in one of the many exciting roles in the business. We can’t wait to get out on the road to discover a new generation of emerging talent and music executives. Get involved – it could be your chance to make it big!”
BME BRITBOARD

4milion’s a lot of money. Peter Ainsworth, Chair of the Big Lottery Fund, told me: “The Big Music Project is all about inspiring young people across the UK to fulfil their potential and achieve their personal goals. It is just one of a number of initiatives the Big Lottery Fund is backing that aim to empower young people to shape their own futures and to play an active role in their communities. This exciting event today is a great way to kick off The Big Music Project and is just the start of its engagement with young people up and down the country through a range of inspiring events, workshops and work experience opportunities.”

The Big Music Project (TBMP) is all about music, young people, and possibilities. This year long project, which kicks off in April, will include a national music competition – The Big Music Project Competition powered by Next BRIT Thing, alongside nationwide careers fairs, community projects through youth clubs and hundreds of work experience and internship opportunities, all fully supported online.

Aiming to build confidence, create real career opportunities, and secure positive outcomes and futures using the power of music, TBMP will harness the attraction of the music industry and its many ancillary careers to empower and engage more than 4.5 million young people aged 14-24 across the UK, using a list of 100 hubs and 1000 local champions identified and selected by UK Youth.

The afternoon included Q&A panels, performances by ridiculously talented classical and pop youngsters about to hit their own fame time, and an exclusive backstage tour of the BRITs set just 2 days ahead of the renowned Awards show. Speakers included artists Plan B, MNEK, Chase & Status, and Capital’s Pandora, music executives, and young people who have secured their first jobs in the music industry who were happy to share their journeys and experiences.
BME PLAN B
PLAN B TAKES THE MIC.

There was much excitement and screaming (that these young music wannabees will need to stifle in their future careers!), when Plan B stepped onstage to tell them about his charity Each One Teach One Trust, which is a charity founded to improve the lives of young people by providing access to new skills.

“If you don’t have a clear talent, it just seems impossible to make something of yourself in the society that we live in. There just doesn’t appear to be enough places you can go, offering advice and support. “We (EOTO) have decided to support the ‘The Big Music Project’ because it will attempt to do just that. By not only providing information, but creating and highlighting genuine opportunities for all young people interested in music and beyond.”

The aims of the BIG Music Project are to deliver a large scale, year long, media-led youth engagement campaign, reaching over 4,500,000 young people aged 14-24 across the UK, and focused on the opportunities created for them by their passion for and interest in music. It will take a lot of hand holding by mentors to actually achieve this. I’ve seen first hand that the promise of a carrot dangled is often not enough to engage youth who frankly have bigger dramas to survive. but TBMP will create some amazing first opportunities for a strong percentage of Britain youth, to make or produce music, thereby increasing confidence and collaboration skills, and building links across communities and this can only be a good thing in the long run. To nurture and develop young musicians both musically and commercially to provide them with a rounded view of the industry they aspire to work in isn’t something the big music brands have put so much resource into in the past.

Lookout for their four national The Big Music Project events that will attract over 1,000 young people each through major artist performances. These events will promote opportunities to engage with the music industry, sign up to the music competition and explore their work opportunities programme.
There aren’t many doors open to diverse unconnected audiences who want a part of the music industry pie. this looks like too good an opportunity to miss. you know what they say- you’ve got to be in it, to win it!

JASMINE WITH POET DEAN ATTA AT THE TATE POST SHOW.

Hosted by Poetry Luv, an emerging London poetry night, the event showcased the work of young performers and writers from Lambeth who had attended workshops inside their local library in Clapham as part of the Tell Tales project. Brixon based spoken word artist Elijah Kerr and club DJ Anthony Douglas created Poetry Luv in 2013, to help nurture and showcase young street poets and spoken word artists.

Elijah Kerr is an intriguing story in himself. He is also known as Jaja Soze is a rapper, spoken word artist and former gang leader of South London’s PDC (Peel Dem Crew) who since leaving prison in 2005 has turned the PDC away from crime and reinvented it as a record label from it’s studios in Overton Road in Brixton. Jaja helps young people in the community of Angle Town, Brixton. His projects are largely funded by the Heritage Trust and Arts Council through his company Indigo Youth. Jaja has a new spoken word album due for release in May so you’d think he’d be spending all his free time promoting that, but instead he was spear heading Poetry Luv.

Jaja revealed to me how this former gang leader was inspired to set up Poetry Luv.

‘’I started feeling uninspired by the music industry, and felt that poetry was a powerful tool to help inspire and educate our young people whilst still portraying our art form, so I hooked up with my school mate DJ Mr Play and Poetry Luv was born. We now have a huge following’’.

With Dean Atta and George the Poets popularity and signing to record labels there seems to be a shift back towards poetry being cool for young people again. Jaja states ‘’With artist like myself and George the poet the young people feel a connection as we speak their language whilst articulating it, so others can also understand we mix street culture with education, that’s why it’s becoming so popular. This art form will defo become huge and because it’s becoming popular young kids are starting to write, read and go to library’s to research’’.

Jaja explained how exactly since leaving prison in 2005, he’s turned his old PDC gang away from crime and reinvented it as a record label from its studios in Overton Road in Brixton.

‘’Turning our crew into a record label was a major challenge but we got through it. Now PDC artists like DVS are popping up in the no1 Hip-hop charts and my face is in the local paper for positive stuff. We now sign up-and-coming artists and run workshops in partnership with Lottery Heritage and Youth Music and I will continue to break barriers in order to inspire’’.

Jaja’s final word was of course about his own album out very soon. ‘’All I can say is it’s very powerful hence the title Power, and I hope it inspires and makes a young generation move forward and progress’’.

THE WHOLE DIGIDEBATE PANEL AT ITV.

Next ITV hosted a debate for young people and broadcast leaders titled ‘’ SOCIAL MEDIA is responsible for messing up a lot of peoples lives. In the past 12 months we’ve seen pop stars sex tapes and regular couples getting busy on public staircases. What is your take on social media-is it a platform for good or evil?’’

ADAM DEACON SPEAKS ON HIS SOCIAL MEDIA EXPERIENCES BOTH GOOD AND BAD AT THE #DIGIDEBATE.

Anyone and everyone has an opinion on social media nowadays. RICHARD Blackwood told me‘’ I think it’s a Blessing and a curse cause if used right you can turn yourself into a star from your own home but the flip side is everything and everyone is accessible and that is never a good thing!! SLIM added ‘’ Social networking is a bit like Hovis 50 50, it’s made it easier to cheat but easier to get caught. Overall it’s a good platform most embarrassing videos are put up by people’s good friends so I guess it shows you who your friends really are!’’ EDDIE Kadi jumped in ‘’ Social Media if used properly can be extremely beneficial to a business or personality. Though that person has to be able to use their brain. Train your dog well. So it doesn’t end up biting you or leaving waste all over the house.’’

MUSIC ACT DELILAH TALKS ABOUT HER EXPERIENCE WITH SOCIAL MEDIA FROM THE PANEL.

TV magic star Dynamo revealed ‘‘without social media it would’ve been very difficult for me to get out and get my magic out to the public. It was the first option I had because obviously TV companies weren’t really taking notice of a really young kid from Bradford back then and I didn’t really have the resources to make a big massive TV show like I do now but I had a camcorder and a laptop and I had the internet and YouTube and I just put videos on there and they started getting a hundred views if I was lucky and it grew to get millions of views with the help of Twitter and Facebook. So without social media then there is no magic’’.

Dynamo cautioned

‘’I think the scariest thing about social media is the fact that nobody has any privacy any more. Every single day there’s some sort of scandal that comes out online and I guess it’s bad for the news as well because the news breaks first on Twitter. So it’s hard to keep secrets but I guess that’s not necessarily a bad thing because sometimes there’s too many secrets kept from us by higher people. If that makes any sense? (wink) ‘’

Olympic athlete Jeanette Kwakye reiterated the pros and cons ‘’I think with social media it’s about getting your campaign out there, putting yourself out there whatever the cause may be. I would like to think that it’s a platform for anybody who’s got talent to showcase it and getting an honest opinion from everyone who’s out there and you know I think people have got jobs from putting their talent out there and I think that for me personally, it’s a good thing and it can only be a good thing. I’m a big social media user, I probably could live without social media but I’d find it quite challenging, but I do love it, I get to connect with a lot of my fans and kept in touch with a lot of friends and family who I haven’t seen in a long time.To be honest I’m actually quite aware of my social footprint, I do think before I post, occasionally I might have a bit of a rant but it’s never to the extent that I could probably go to but always to a level that I think is appropriate and I’m very aware and quite conscious of the people that follow me, especially on my twitter account and I wouldn’t want to get in any kind of trouble. I think the future of social media is it can only get bigger, it can only get better, there’s going to be more ways to interact and I think that we’ll close down on that 6 degrees. You know the 6 degrees of separation that we have? I think we’ll close down on that eventually. Down to 2 or 3 maybe and I think that by being connected as a whole universe is going to be something quite special. I think I am a little bit of a feminist. I’m a big believer in girl power, empowering especially young girls it’s very very important and I’ve been very lucky in my career to come across some amazing women so I think that being part of that kind of thing as well for me is quite special and I’d like to champion that at all times’’.

JASMINE WITH CHARLENE WHITE, JACK PETCHEY (WHO FUNDS HUNDREDS OF YOUNG EAST END YOUTH PROJECTS) AND ADAM DEACON.

Chart star Wretch 32 had a balanced opinion

‘’I think social media has changed the world for the better and tiny bit for the worse. The reason I say for the better, I’ve got a little brother who lives in Canada and now we’re buttons away. For the worse because you never know who is on the other end of the buttons, so it can be used well and misused at the same time. Being an artist it’s helped me a lot, obviously going from myspace to twitter to youtube etc. I definitely think it has done more good than bad, but with things as big as the internet and social media there’s always a flip side to it’’.

Pop star Conor Maynard recalled his best social media moment ‘’I think probably the most memorable moment for me was when my fans decided to name themselves, they called themselves the maniacs after Maynard (laughs) but it was the maniacs they went with and that was probably the most memorable and it’s stuck ever since. So that was a big moment for me’’.

TV and film star Ashley Walters lamented the time it takes him away from his loved ones

‘’for me in a family sense it means that we spend less time with our children and they talk to us less about things because they’re on BBM, Whatsapp, instagram, twitter or any of the other social networking sites so far us it’s changed in that way. When it comes to business I think over the last few years I’ve been able to reach parts of the world that I’d never been able to reach before, so it’s progressed my career and our business and stuff like that as well. So having that kind of global reach is an amazing thing. I remember the days where I had to use a phone box to call my mates so I grew up in that era and I think a lot of the kids today like I said our kids they’ve always grown up with computers and whatever so for them they’re a dab hand at it but for us we’ve had to transit with that change, but it’s been a great thing’’.

Hollywood star Idris Elba implored

‘‘the problem I have with social media is that people forget to talk to people in real life. It’s fine talking on twitter or on a text or on instagram but human contact is the best way to communicate your ideas and that’s what I have a problem with. Ultimately I’m a big fan of social media but I do think that people need to talk to each other more. My worst experience of social media is having really defamatory pictures of me put online and people who’ve never even knew I was in social media believing it’s the truth. It’s just awful. I’ve seen this pictures or stories of me on social media and I’m like these are so far from the truth and yet you’re getting people commenting like it’s the truth, so there’s the good and the bad, and the bad is like the devil’’.

After that it was favour for a favour time as ITV News anchor Charlene White asked me to come and sit on a media panel at the University of the arts titled ‘’Charlene and friends’’ for a chat about what we do, how we got to where we are, and advice we’d give to budding journalists. Charlene said we were ‘’a group of my favourite features and entertainment journalists across UK newspaper, TV, magazine and radio’’. Alongside me on the panel were Guardian journalist Simon Hattenstone who once got stoned with Snoop to get a great interview, BBC Radio 1 Newsbeat entertainment presenter/reporter Nesta McGregor who shared his red-carpet bloopers, and Closer Magazine journalist Joanna Abeyie who explained her journey to the top. Like us all who started from the bottom now we’re here, you too could join us.

‘ROMANTICS’ SAVE MORE THAN £2.5 MILLION THIS VALENTINE’S DAY BY SNAPPING UP DISCOUNTED GIFTS

love

The Beatles sang Can’t buy me love but apparently in 2014, you can. Can you recall a time without discounted daily e-mails from groupon and the like pinging into your e-mail box? Never before have I taken advantage of so many massages, facials and afternoon teas for a tenner. I’m not the only one jumping on board the special deal bandwagon either. BOGOF is not just for grocery trips.

Valentines day is creeping up upon us and Deal Zippy – the UK’s first daily deals search engine, aggregating deals from more than 30 of the biggest deal sites, analysed all Valentine’s Day deals purchased on group-buying sites including Wowcher, KGB Deals, Living Social, Mighty Deals and Groupon between January 1st and February 10th. The findings are staggering! We are a nation of discount loving purchasers even on and especially on Valentines Day.

With the most romantic day of the year approaching, what are people buying for their most cherished ones? Forget flowers and chocolates, lovebirds across the UK are buying heavily discounted jewelry and bargain lingerie. More than 19,000 romantic gents have decided to spoil their leading ladies with a £15 personalised, triple ring necklace with a whopping 79% off, while almost 1,979 will be presenting their wives or girlfriends with £14 Swarovski crystal heart necklaces on February 14 – saving 80%. Similarly, 4,249 men could be handing over the same exact box of lingerie to their unknowing female partners, hoping that £19 turns out to be money well spent. Almost 51,000 Brits have snapped up bargains for their partners.

Meanwhile, a staggering 34,971 Brits have entered a competition run by Groupon to win a Mariachi band to serenade/humiliate their Valentines. Love knows no bounds.

P Diddy told us its all about the Benjamin’s and an analysis of the average saving made on each deal this year revealed a huge £51 saved on every Valentines Day-related deal purchased. In statistical form, that’s 50,947 deals bought x £51 average saving = £2,598,297 saved this Valentines! With the average cost of a Valentine’s Day gift being less than £13 on deal sites why would anyone go for the fifty quid Interflora option?

I have to confess to be a little skeptical about the true costs of these gifts before discounted. I mean can the Sterling silver personalised triple ring necklace with free delivery being offered at £14.99 really have been £70 pre discount? Or is it clever wording that suggests its ‘’valued’’ at £70 before over 19,000 purchases hit ‘’BUY’’ on their computers?

Provng that the way to a mans heart may truly be through his stomach, nearly 3000 romantic souls have paid £17 for an All you can eat three-course buffet at the Hilton London Docklands Inc. ferry transfer from Canary Wharf Pier to The Hilton Pier.

Jason Grima, co-founder of deals search engine, Dealzippy.co.uk, comments:

“In the lead up to February 14, shoppers are bombarded with choice, so a great way for brands to differentiate themselves is on perceived value. A saving of up to 80% off is a no-brainer, even if it’s not particularly romantic to go for a bargain gift. But I’m sure most people would rather their other halves didn’t pay through the nose for something they bought last minute on the high street.”

So there you have it- in 2014, love means never having to pay 100%. Quickly subscribe to Deal Zippy where you can bombard your loved ones with 10 gifts for the price of one this year and recite ‘’ How do I love thee? Let me count the ways….’’

Frank Sinatra once said ‘’a simple I LOVE YOU means more than money’’, Kanye doesn’t want a Gold digger and J Lo told us her ‘’Love don’t cost a thing’’. Sites like Deal Zippy now make that a reality!

JASMINES JUICE featuring JOAN COLLINS AND JON SNOW!

joan
JOAN COLLINS OBE- AT 80!

When you think of the original diva, one lady came before Mariah, Cher, Céline, Dionne, Whitney, Janet, Madonna, Diana and the rest. Her name is Joan Collins and she is a living legend.
This week I was invited to spend the evening with her, at the opening night of her internationally acclaimed one woman show, (which included old-school gossip, shameless name-dropping and celebrity score-settling) that delighted the audience. One Night With Joan, directed by her current (fifth) husband PERCY GIBSON and production design by OLIVER SONES, is a once in a lifetime chance of hearing about an era of Hollywood from a witty, glamazonian divas lips right here in London town.

This is the second outing for this show so the script is well rehearsed, now renamed, as in early 2006, Joan toured the United Kingdom in An Evening With Joan Collins, a one-woman show in which she detailed the highs and lows of her career and life, directed once again by her husband Percy Gibson.

At the intimate Leicester Square Theatre Joan guided us through the story of her life, accompanied by precious old film footage, photos and shared stories and secrets of her celebrated life and career, as one of the world’s most glamorous and intriguing personalities.

Her opening night in London doubled up alongside the annual Chinese New Year celebrations so outside the theatre were millions parading and cheering whilst onstage at the age of 80; Joan was resplendent in her two diva looks. First in sequined flared pants with slashed expensive sweater and loads of neck bling, which showed her slim feminine figure off beautifully. Secondly, a full length sequined ball gown. Joan’s trademark chocolate velvet round curls were rigidly in place and dark red lips were in full effect “”I never go out without make up!’’

“I don’t think about my public image. I just do it. All the women in my life, my mother, grandmother, wore make-up and were very well groomed. I love clothes and looking as good as I can.”

The stage set was minimal with a simple throne for Ms Collins been-there-seen-it-all posterior and an old school telephone on a stand that rung every now and again to take us to the next chapter in her journey. ‘‘And then I got a call ‘’bbrring brring’’- it was Hollywood!’’

As Joan paced around the stage, she talked us through her early years being born in Paddington, London, the daughter of a dance teacher and nightclub hostess, and an agent whose clients would later include Shirley Bassey, the Beatles and Tom Jones. Showbiz was in her genes.
Her first acting role was at age 3 onstage in Brighton. As a teenager she used to write to movie stars for their autographs. How times have changed- now her fans can tweet and converse with her regularly!

The script takes digs of vengeance throughout. When starting out she was performing at the Arts theatre as a doll with her sibling. “One night we missed our enhances because we were backstage playing snakes and ladders. The Director yelled ‘’ you two will never be actors! ” And as she said that, in the background screen were shots of her in her biggest roles.

Joan talked us through her relationship with the press. ‘‘These were my press headlines; I was labeled Britain’s bad girl. Britain’s answer to Ava Gardner and I loved it’’

Another highlight of the evening was outtakes and her legendary bitch-fights with Linda Evans in Dynasty. Whilst most of us will immediately call memories of her in Dynasty (In 1985, Dynasty was the #1 show in the United States, beating out Dallas which ranked at #2) for her portrayal of Alexis, she informed us she was much more than that. She was nominated six times for a Golden Globe Award (every year from 1982 to 1987), winning once in 1983, the same year she was nominated for an Emmy as Best Actress in a Drama Series. Fascinating to hear that upon accepting the award, Joan thanked Sophia Loren for turning down the part of Alexis.

Among the many confidences, she told of the ups and downs of her career and screens rare and at times hilarious film footage from her life. She is happy to send herself up with cringe worthy old film roles and hilarious costumes. It was very endearing.
She talked about people who had been mean to her

‘’ I wanted to be Ava Gardner. But then I met my namesake Joan Crawford”. I was introduced to Joan. She blanked me!’’

We heard first hand about her marriages, her screen test for Cleopatra and discovered why she lost the role to Elizabeth Taylor, her first on-set encounter with the formidable Bette Davis, being broke and why and how Hollywood changed her fortune.

It’s hard to believe whilst hearing her tales of working alongside Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra and Gene Kelly that she can be her age, when she still seems so youthful. Maybe its her young connects like fashion model Cara Delevingne, who is her god daughter. Things haven’t changed that much for females in the celebrity spotlight in either Joan or Cara’s day. Joan revealed

‘’ I realized the studio were going to fire me if I didn’t lose 8pounds”. My cottage cheese diet failed so they gave me slimming pills. I did lose 8 lbs it was amazing, but I didn’t asleep for 2 weeks either, then I discovered these were Dexedrine- ecstasy pills! “

Joan recalled how Hollywood was a tough gig and she wasn’t always working. Her memories included loads of auditions and rejections. ‘’I decided to go to the job centre for my rightly earned benefits. I wore my best suit and the assistant said “hey didn’t you used to be Joan Collins?”
She laughed as she recalled starring in her sister Jackie Collins books ‘’I starred in “the stud” showing my boobs. I was chastised for being over 40 and naked. So I made….the bitch! Then I got dynasty! Or Die-nasty as we used to call it. It really was the battle of the shoulder pads. Sometimes they were so big we had to walk through the door sideways!’’ My fave Dynasty dress was white with a huge taffeta frill. We’d copy things from Vogue, Harpers and even Princess Diana!”

Clearly she’s always had a cheeky, sexy streak in her whatever the year; at the age of 50, she appeared in a twelve-page photo spread for Playboy magazine!

It was clear (by her version of the story anyway), that she played the game on her terms when it comes to men. Married five times and been hit on by practically every acting God in Hollywood. “I was such a good girl I married the first man who took advantage of me. One night he tried to sell me to an Arab sheik for 10k”, and tales of acting with Bing Crosby. ‘’It was like kissing an ashtray!….but Bob Hope was another story!” ‘’One night, Frank Sinatra called and asked me to dinner. He said he’d send his plane to pick me up. He was In Hamburg, I was in the UK. I politely declined with ‘’I have an early call tomorrow’’ he replied ‘’I can change your call doll”. I never went but Linda Evens did!’’ miaw. Thrown under the bus LOL.
Another similar Richard Burton story where she spurned his advances, ‘’but a few years later Elizabeth Taylor didn’t’’.

‘’Marilyn Monroe came up to me in a bar and told me I got a job cos she was too old. ‘’Watch out for the wolves in Hollywood’’ she warned me.

And ‘’ I met Elvis at a fancy dress party at Rock Hudsons home. I’ve been trying to find the picture of me and Elvis that was taken ever since”

The second half of the evening was a question and answer session with the chance to ask Joan anything you’ve always wanted to know about her amazing life. Her hubby chaired this part and it was interesting taking in their personal dynamic. He’s clearly a dominant alpha male that says what he has to and keeps her in check. They live between their homes in Los Angeles, London, New York and the South of France. He at half her age must keep her young too. The questions that came from the audience were facilitated via twitter. Very modern.

Joan really is the last icon standing after having rubbed shoulders with the greats.
Lets check the stats on this woman. She’s appeared in more than 118 feature films and TV series, her novels and memoirs have sold over 50 million copies worldwide and have been translated into 30 languages. She’s a regular diarist for The Spectator and a contributor to The Daily Mail, The Telegraph, The Times and Harper’s Bazaar. On stage, she’s performed on Broadway, the West End, and in
national tours in the UK and North America. On the humanitarian front, Joan Collins is devoted to the well-being of women, children and families and regularly lends her support and celebrity to causes that include finding a cure breast cancer and empowering children with learning disabilities. In 1997 she received an OBE for her lifetime contribution to the arts and her continuing charity work.

Joans final nugget of gold was ‘’Live for the moment and enjoy every second of it, I think of life as a predator. You’ve got to eat it before it eats you!”

JASMINE WITH JON SNOW-THE LEADER OF THE UK’S BEST NEWS SHOW.

I ended the week with Jon Snow at the ITN studios for a chat about young people and social media for a #digidebate titled IS SOCIAL MEDIA GOOD FOR YOUNG PEOPLE, OR IS IT SIMPLY A PLATFORM FOR VANITY, VENOM AND VULGARITY?
Jon introduced the evening by having the audience in stitches by telling us even though he was old he loved social media and used it for lots of vanity, vulgarity and venom but that its an amazing medium if used in the right way and the way forwards!

I caught up with actor and music star Ashley Walters (who when he wasn’t telling me about his new line of baseball caps and headphones) and his wife, who told me

‘’ it means that we spend less time with our children and they talk to us less about things because they’re on BBM, Whatsapp, instagram, twitter or any of the other social networking sites so far us it’s changed in that way. When it comes to business I think over the last few years I’ve been able to reach parts of the world that I’d never been able to reach before, so it’s progressed my career and our business and stuff like that as well. His wife , actress and entrepreneur Danielle Isaie added ‘’ Yeah. Definitely, It’s definitely made us more anti-social, like he was saying we’ll sit there, there’ll be like five of us in a room and literally we’re all on our phones like for 45 minutes to an hour and I look up and I’m like “hi, let’s have a conversation!” So in that sense it can be quite annoying.’’

Chart topper Wretch32 told me

‘’’ I think social media has changed the world for the better and tiny bit for the worse. The reason I say for the better, I’ve got a little brother who lives in Canada and now we’re buttons away. For the worse because you never know who is on the other end of the buttons, so it can be used well and misused at the same time. The main event took place at ITV where lots of young people, media leaders and broadcasters alongside celebs from ITV News presenter Charlene White and Adam Deacon gave us their views and things got very heated…..More on that in next weeks Juice!

JACOB BANKS AT HIS SELL OUT SHOW AT XOYO

I started the week at XOYO in Old Street for a sold out show by Jacob Banks. The venue was heaving with young, diverse trendies. The vibe was positive, excited and muso. His two female support acts did a great job but the main man was who we were all there to witness.
JB SETLIST
He performed an hour-long show with an impressive set list, and his label mate at RENOWNED music- Wretch32- even joined him for a track at the end. His Justin Timberlake and Luther Vandross mash up. Incredible!
JB KICKS
JACOB ROCKS ADIDAS KICKS.

Jacob is unique looking and unique sounding. With his laid back cool vibe. He was dressed from head to toe in black with just a peak of white sock escaping from his Adidas sneakers. His trademark wide brimmed hat was perched firmly on his head and complimented by a black, satin lapelled blazer.

KWABS
JASMINE WITH KWABS

Next I caught up with another young man causing a buzz on the scene and tipped for huge things in 2014- Kwabs! He’s been on every ‘’who to watch in music’’ list (MTV, RAIO 1XTRA) and his debut EP – Wrong Or Right will be released on Feb 4. The EP includes songs – Spirit Fade, Last Stand and a Ben Pearce remix of ‘Wrong or Right’.
Kwabs has a deep baritone vocal that rumbles and reverberates becoming an instrument of both power and vulnerability but most of all, that transcends description and which, quite simply, just has to be heard. He brings to the forefront a mix of his African roots with both R&B as well as gospel influences set against a backdrop of electro-synthesized soul. Already, he’s captivated audiences at his sell out shows across the capital. His growing reputation for an exceptional live performance has already won him praise from the likes of Jessie Ware, India Arie, Laura Mvula, Emeli Sande, Joss Stone and Plan B.
He revealed to me what we can expect from his new music

“There are still loads more musical flavours that aren’t out there yet. The fans will be used to hearing me sing on slower, brooding tracks so I intend to pick the energy up a bit. To that end, I suppose the biggest surprise will be when my music gets them dancing.”

Kwabs is a south London lad. I personally always avoid going south of the river. Yes I’m a north of the river snob. Kwabs attempted to sell south London to me ‘“It feels like a proper melting pot here, with different cultures crossing paths all the time, and I love that. It also has the BEST food, which is basically everything…” I wasn’t convinced but decided to focus on our mutual love of Africa. He’s West African, I’m east African. We laughed at the never-ending competitive banter between Ghana and Nigeria and which was best “That is a dangerous question! I honestly couldn’t say that one place is better than the other – I’ve never been to Nigeria. Our Jollof rice, though. It wins. Sorry guys.”

We returned to the UK and I wondered which radio station he was most in tune to? His answer was unhesitant.

“Radio 1xtra. I love that that station is always pushing new and interesting music.”

As that dreaded annual commercial money making day called Valentines Day is fast approaching, Kwabs revealed, “I can’t take that day seriously! I’ve been known to try and gather friends for incredibly unsexy anti-valentines lunch. Anyone who is romantic all year round is welcome to join me…”

Finally we touched on the dangerous yet exciting world of social media. This week at ITV I held a debate titled Is social media a platform for good with young people or a platform for vanity, violence and vulgarity? Kwabs added his two pence worth “Definitely both. Social media makes young people feel they can say what’s on their mind very publicly without real and direct repercussions to airing their views. Though that’s not to say that everything on people’s minds is worth hearing! The most enlightened or funny or interesting of us flourish on social media. And some others leave us with our heads in our hands. It’s all relevant stuff though, because it truthfully shows what a wide spectrum of people exists. “
Describing his best and worst experiences personally he laughed “I once had someone tell me on twitter that they didn’t enjoy my gig. You get over that pretty quickly, though. Life is way, way too short. I do get occasional marriage proposal over twitter! Those are more or less guaranteed to make me smile.”

JASMINE WITH STEFANO HATFIELD- HEAD HONCHO AT NEW TV CHANNEL LONDON LIVE WHICH MAUNCHES MARCH 31ST!

Finally, something making swaths of London’s media, showbiz and music industry companies are happy about the impending launch of new London local TV channel London Live. I sat down with the big man up in London Live Towers- Stefano Hatfield – for more information.

Its strapline phrases probably include the words urban, young and knowing. So many young BAME (black and minority ethnic) young people have been snapped up by the brand. My own reporters plus numerous other mini brands that have been hustling their art in London for years are finally getting their first big breaks.

New TV shows to look out for include;
Brothers with no Game- a comedy about four young Londoners with unsuccessful love lives, Spit TV- an exclusive one mic one take set of performances hosted by Ras Kwame, Nothing to Something- a string of high profile Londoners tell us how they made their way to success, Car Check- a top gear for the urban generation, Balcony TV music session- music acts recorded o a balcony overlooking Westminster, and The adventures of T-Boy- a multi cultural sitcom following the exploits of T-Boy a rich Nigerian who comes to live with his aunt and cousin in London!

Some will win, others may fail but at last a mainstream broadcaster is giving London’s ethnic minorities an equal opportunity on TV screens and that is something I applaud!

JASMINES JUICE- THE KOJO SHOW and COMICS UNCHAINED AT HACKNEY EMPIRE!

kojo card

Radio host Kojo sold out the Hackney empire for his show titled The Kojo Show and entertained a packed theatre of people with comedy sandwiched between celeb interviews with Noel Clarke, Derek Chisora, Kanya King and Ricky Norwood aka Eastenders Fat Boy.

But the best guest had to be the newest panellist to Loose Women (and about time too) Jamelia. She wowed the audience with effortless whit by talking motherhood, her new TV role and having to rein in her “ghettoness” for the mid morning viewer. There is something so classy and funny about her, maybe it’s her honesty and lack of show business that makes her so appealing.

She had the audience in stitches when asked why she’d recently turned down nearly every reality TV series under the sun she said: “Kojo you know me, you know what I’m like, and while I’m always myself I can’t risk the public spending 24 hours with me, you’ve seen the Big Brother house, you’ve seen how they don’t wash the chicken? If I was there with them doing that, I just can’t!”

When Kojo asked her how long we’d have to wait till she says the words rass and clart on daytime television she nearly fell of her chair. “Stop it, I have to try extra hard not to do that,” she said, and more seriously was proud to address the gap in the shows previously very white panel. “Its nice to be speaking for a large part of the audience, you know we all watch the show but we haven’t had a voice before, and now through me we do. That is progress.”

comics-unchained

Next I caught up with the stars of the COMICS UNCHAINED show, which is happening at Hackney Empire on Saturday 8th February (next Saturday!). Three of my fave British comedians headline this incredibly strong line up (which also includes other acts too). Slim, Richard Blackwood and Eddie Kadi lead the way!. What a line up – certainly not one to be missed.
I hit them with my quick-fire round of questions, (which as you can imagine), they took totally seriously- not!

QUESTION 1- this past few months and next year, films themed around black oppression seem to be very popular. We’ve had D’Jano, The Butler, Mandela, 12 years a slave etc- if there were a black oppression movie about YOUR life, who would play you and what would it be called?
RICHARD BLACKWOOD ‘‘a black movie about my life would be called The Road Less Travelled and I would play the Narrator plus the lead!’’
SLIM ‘’ it should have been Michael Jackson – Beat It’’
EDDIE KADI ‘’It would be called “I am so Fresh” It would be about being accepted regardless of my Identity and I would choose John Boyega to play it, as he is young and energetic. And good looking of course! ‘’
GLENDA ‘‘my block buster would be called AGE IS JUST A NUMBER, & it would be played by OPRAH’’.
AXEL ‘’Mine would be called 5 years of comedy…. Unchained. I would obviously be the main character in the movie but I don’t die or get shot at the end’’
A DOT COMEDIAN ‘’Will Smith, because he is one of the homeboys and he can relate to me. I would call it the struggles of adotcomedian’’

eddie k
EDDIE KADI AND JASMINE TALK COMICS UNCHAINED.

Question 2- CELEBRITY BIG BROTHER 2014- what did you make of the Evander Holyfield gaygate drama?
RICHARD ‘’ I feel Evander dealt with the Gay drama the only way he knew how. It’s a very touchy subject when your dealing with Born again Christians and their views on Gay relationships so I don’t think it should of been aired at all!’’
SLIM ‘’ I can’t knock Evander I’m a boxing man and he is one of the all time greats. You have to be very careful talking about homosexuality as anything you say can be construed negatively by those who wish to do so, but in my opinion each man to his own’’
EDDIE ‘’Unfortunately I have not been keeping an eye on BB…So I can not comment…’’
GLENDA ‘’ Evander said how he felt, like Berni Mac said, I’m saying what you want 2 say,:)’’
AXEL ‘’ To be fair I didn’t see it I only heard about it, so I researched on YouTube…I’m used to hearing older black men talk about homosexuality like that, and he was just voicing his opinions. I got no problem with that, id rather hear him talk about that then him talk about how much of a great boxer he was….KMFT’’
ADOTCOMEDIAN ‘’ Celebrity Big Brother is not my thing; I don’t watch those type of shows. So I’ll will pass’’.

Question 3-CELEB BIG BROTHER 2014- who’s the bigger plonker Dappy or Lee from Blue?
RICHARD ‘’ I know them both so no comment!!’’
SLIM ‘’ Dappy. At least Lee has some swag and doesn’t let horses kick him in his face’’
EDDIE ‘’ All I can say to this is I am a big Dappy Fan! He is entertainment!! Is he a plonker?…Na na naiiiiii!’’
GLENDA ‘’ NOW when I ask the Youngsters about Dappy, the word plonker is not the word they use, starts with D, ends with head, just saying’’
AXEL ‘’ Dappy not because of his ignorant behaviour in the house…but mainly because his name sounds like a new brand of nappies’’
ADOTCOMEDIAN ‘’see above’’

Finally, If you’re suffering from winter blues or struggling through January desperate for payday, spare a thought for those without a home to call their own. Then imagine being young as well as homeless. You could be forgiven for giving up and having no hope. Thankfully one group of young people from One Foot Forward temporary accommodation in Oxford have decided that 2014 is going to be their year. I have spent a few days mentoring and getting to know some of these young people with media interests. So they are voicing their hopes, aspirations and resolutions for this year through song, rap, poetry and blog. Working with local organisation, Brand New Start, they are taking their homeless experience and turning it into positive expression through the Write Start project. And they are not afraid to tell it like it is in front of a live audience – first stop they will be showcasing their talent at Oxford’s largest indoor shopping mall so if you live in the Oxford area keep an eye out for them. It is amazing how creativity can thrive in such a depressing environment. One young resident has been in ‘temporary’ accommodation for almost 5 years. Along with the others on the Write Start project, he is learning top writing tips, working in collaboration with his peers and going to shows and events that inspire creativity. They have the chance to get a qualification at the end of the project and that makes him one of the lucky ones…count your blessings if you have family, friends, a roof over your head and most importantly –feel safe!

JASMINES JUICE -THE RETURN OF TWO LEGENDS- STAN SMITH and SYLVESTER STALLONE.

IDRIS
JASMINE AND IDRIS AT THE STAN SMITH PARTY.

Adidas threw a party to welcome back the return of the classic Stan Smith trainer at the Truman Gallery in east London. I say the Truman Gallery, but in fact the party was in a shoe box. A giant Adidas Stan Smith shoebox!
SHOEBOX
THE PARTY WAS HELD IN A GIANT SHOEBOX FULL OF CELEBS!

The Stan Smith shoe has grown to become the best selling shoe of all time with over 40 million pairs sold. That said, despite its design being so simple, the actual story of the Stan Smith isn’t (look it up).
JEANETTE
OLYMPIC ATHLETE JEANETTE KWAKYE LOVES STAN SMITH.

When growing American Tennis icon, Stan Smith, began wearing the world’s first leather tennis shoes in 1971, they actually featured the name of a former French tennis player. After two successful seasons, with victories at both the US Open and Davis Cup events in ‘71 and Wimbledon in ’72, the decision was made to officially re-christen the simple white leather silhouette to the Stan Smith and history was written, though even today, French-made editions remain a grail.

The adidas Stan Smith shoe is one of the most iconic footwear styles in existence. Frequently voted a classic, since taking a break a few seasons ago its status as a shoe and cult icon has only grown. Uniting streetwear with high-end style, the Stan Smith model is one of the few truly unisex silhouettes out there. There are nuances for the experts, but it’s a shoe for everyone. There’s nothing nicer than a fresh pair out of the box, but they look incredible worn in too.

From high fashion to commercial outlets, imitations of the Stan Smith shoe’s simplicity and design are everywhere, yet no one has managed to top the timeless design to date.
42 years on, the adidas Stan Smith shoe still remains ageless. For all the remixes, restorations, variants, rarities and countries of origin, the Stan Smith shoe is a true Original.

JACOB BANKS
JACOB BANKS HAT HAD A FANBASE OF ITS OWN AT THESTAN SMITH PARTY.

The attendees spoke of their love of the classic Stan Smith as well as other topical issues like social media. Is it a platform for good or bad? Our LONDON360 reporters caught up with Idris Elba, star of Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, to talk about his experience with social media.

“I’ve seen this pictures or stories of me on social media and I’m like these are so far from the truth and yet you’re getting people commenting like it’s the truth, so there’s the good and the bad, and the bad is like the devil. “Social media is impressive and very important, but the thing about social media though, is it’s not reality. The problem I have with social media is that people forget to talk to people in real life. It’s fine talking on twitter or on a text or on instagram but human contact is the best way to communicate your ideas and that’s what I have a problem with. Ultimately I’m a big fan of social media but I do think that people need to talk to each other more.”

Every star had something to say on the issue of social media, proving why it’s the hot topic of the moment. The Jack Petchey Foundation, Media Trust and The Evening Standard’s London Live are holding a panel debate on 3rd February to give one hundred young Londoners a chance to get their voices heard on issues surrounding digital media – does social media voice to young people or just provoke vanity, violence and vulgarity? The event will be chaired by ITV News presenter Charlene White, and attended by a host of media industry experts.

An Evening with Sylvester Stallone - London
SYLVESTER STALLONE AT THE LONDON PALLADIUM. PHOTO COURTESY Jonathan Darby/PA.

If you’re an eighties child then action hero’s like sly Stallone, arnie and Bruce Willis were who shaped your former years. They epitomized the American dream, Hollywood alpha males and the dream buff body.
Like most stars of their generation they still hold a mystique. They’re not publicly available and never have been. Can you imagine these a list Gods on twitter putting up selfies and weekly gossip mags flogging their latest desperate attempt at a fragrance?
An Evening with Sylvester Stallone - London
STALLONE AND JONATHAN ROSS. PHOTO COURTESY Jonathan Darby/PA.

They’re untouchable, mysterious and iconic. So when I was invited to spend ‘’an evening with Sylvester Stallone’’ live on stage at the London palladium, I was transported back to the wild kid, excitedly shadow boxing the family in uncontrollable delirium after watching Rocky on telly.

Our host and guide through Mr. Stallone’s verbal career chat for the night was our own Brit legend and encyclopedia on all things showbiz and movies- Mr. Jonathan Ross.
Jonathan has a unique way of treating his guests with humble respect and ribbing them with the occasional teasing banter. He’s on our side but also on theirs and on this night he brought out a humble, adorable side of a living legend that no one was expecting.
After all that’s what Sylvester is. He’s gone from being the meathead action hero, to one of the last truly a list actors that still invoke an intake of breath on sight.
An Evening with Sylvester Stallone - London

Sylvester is more than just a Hollywood star. He’s a writer, producer and director of almost 90 movies and the only actor in history to open a Number One film across five decades. He’s had long career, from the breakthrough Rocky to his latest blockbuster movie franchise, The Expendables. His impending arrival had a whole street in central London buzzing.

The palladium was clearly sold out buzzing with excitement full of acting fans, boxing fans and a scatter of celebrities that included Boy George all spilling out into the street. A mix of suited black tie wearing VIPs and your regular Joe Smho in jeans and hoodie with the ladies all dressed to the nines. When Jonathan Ross introduced Sylvester to the stage they actually cut to a live camera that was following him from his dressing room to the stage, like his boxer character in Rocky making his way to the ring. This proceeded to make us ecstatically wild and I found myself caught up listening to a female shrieking and screaming along with the rest of the audience. The female was I.

He stepped onstage in a sharp crisp shirt, red hanky in his suit blazer pocket and an extremely sharp well cut perfectly fitted suit. He was yacht tanned and looked strong and well for his 67 years.
Jonathan on the other hand, over a decade younger, rocked a midnight blue velvet blazer and bright blue socks and as much as I love him did look unfit, pasty and punchy alongside Sly.

Jonathan guided him gently, treading carefully through the story of his acting life and Sylvester spoke humbly and movingly about his meager start. It was unbelievable that this guy once lived in a hellhole of poverty before making the big time and his recounting of his experience with fame was inspirational. From the now legendary story of how he was so poor he had to sell his dog (which he then bought back for thousands after getting work), and his inner conflict of taking more serious roles as an actor as opposed to the ones that made him famous, he was mesmerizing to watch and listen to.

Sylvester reminisced about his early acting days and how much he sucked

“I tried for a school play called (Sweeney) Todd goes West. I was horrible. My mouth was crooked I had slurred speech. (He suffered nerve damage when he was born, hence the speech problems you hear), I was told not to bother with acting”

An Evening with Sylvester Stallone - London

Yet Sylvester has no regrets following his passion for the big screen. ‘’I’m very very proud to have been able to play one character for life. Rambo was my darkest character. Me and De Niro talk about this all the time’’. (He name checks Robert De Niro numerous times is clearly is a fan that holds him in high regard)

“I was failing in California and needed an opportunity to make it. Just give me a chance I begged everyone and I was writing. No one thought I could write. One night I was watching a fight of Ali. So I got this idea of collecting from a loan shark and I wrote a script. I went to an audition and they said I wasn’t right. I then said something that changed my life. On my way out of the door I turned and desperately pleaded, ” I write a bit too”. They said ‘yeah bring us something one day”. And so I went home and grabbed some scripts and was back 10 minutes later’’.

Now that is persistence!
He continued ‘‘in everyone’s live there are three or four crossroads and this was one of mine. So they eventually offered me over 300,000 and I had to go for it. But they put a million clauses in my contract that said they could fire me for being late, being untidy, being rude, if my hair was parted wrong. I did everything right and went for it. ”

Sylvester had the audience roaring with laughter as he reminisced on how badly he reacted to his early fame

‘‘the success affected me. I was horrible. I was an authority on everything. If I could go back I would have punched myself in the face. I was bad!’’.

His arrogance made him write the sequel to Rocky. ‘’I wrote Rocky 2. Everyone on the crew hated my script so bad they all quit. They wanted him to party in the playboy mansion and finally die. I saw him as going on and on. It was a very different early beginning to the film brand that made my name. The original Adrian was a totally different woman, mickey was a racist and a lot of other differences’’.

Sylvester blames Rambo for his perma-tan. ‘’Rambo 3 is the reason; I was so burnt out in the hot sun shooting all day. That’s why I’m permanently red. I’m burnt for life.
I loved that movie. It wasn’t just violence- I showed real atrocities from wars around the world too’’.

We were all roaring with laughter again as he recalled meeting John Travolta shooting the dance classic ‘Staying alive’. ‘’John was trying to eat well. I’d place a plate of fudge on the table. Very soon the fudge was gone. John was dancing and at one point complaining about chaffing. I laughed at him incredulous “You’re chaffing?! In Rocky we were stitching ourselves up in between shoots!”

Expanding on his screen writing Sylvester explained ‘’The hardest thing to me is writing sequels. They’re hard to do if they’re good. I used to be an usher in cinemas though. So I studied films hard. I earned 30 dollars a week as an usher but I learnt how to structure and write a film by watching movies non-stop’’.

An Evening with Sylvester Stallone - London

Jonathon asked Sly to talk about his movie adversaries ‘‘with my enemies I have to make them twice as creative and as aggressive as Rocky’’. (Jonathon pushed on real life adversaries) “I’m not gonna mention Steven Seagal….the guys that do the same movie where they knock everyone out”. LOL great to know even at his great stage in his career he recalls the competitive beef and throws shade when needed!

He continued

‘’With me Bruce and Arnold. We all had our own different way of doing it. Me and Arnold hated each other in a good way. He’s a worthy adversary. We’ve spoken and we both agree that its sensational to have a worthy opponent’’.

His most ambitious project, the action thriller The Expendables, which he wrote, directed and starred in, see’s him hire an all star action cast including Jason Statham, Mickey Rourke, Jet Li, Eric Roberts, Dolph Lungren and Steve Austin – as well as Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Sly revealed that of all the actors he’s brought together it’s our very own Brit Jason Statham that’s his fave. ‘’When he smiles and jokes around he’s great. He might really make it in this business lol!’’.

Sly is very self aware of his luck with films being made at a certain time and the cutthroat industry. ‘’Raging bull would never have been made today. Studios and Hollywood are different. Today it’s a much cheaper budget, like a million a movie!’’ Revealing he always had a thing to play a fit, butch action hero he added ‘’the most iconic fictional charter for me in my early days was Steve Reeves in the Hercules films. He had the most perfect physical specimen ever and I also loved Kirk Douglas!’’

Stallone revealed he had turned down roles he regretted too in films like Coming home, Witness with Harrison ford. Romancing the stone. But all my failures opened up a door for success’’

In the audience Q&A session Teresa from Cheshire asked an average question. If there were “any actors you still want to work with?” Answer; Sean Penn.

Typically eye-rolling question came from Louise from Swansea. “I’m a lady of a certain age and weight. I can’t lose weight. Would you do a fitness DVD? That would inspire me?
Sly looked speechless and confused before stuttering ‘’I tried it once, I did a book called “sly moves”, it bombed!’’

Its easy to forget that although Stallone has established a worldwide recognition as an actor, he is also a writer and director that’s won the Academy Award for Best Picture. Rocky grew to a franchise of five sequels and in 2006 concluded with Rocky Balboa, a critical and audience success which resolutely confirmed both Stallone and Rocky as iconic cultural symbols. In more recent times, Stallone wrote, directed and starred in Rambo, which continued the saga of Vietnam vet John Rambo 25 years after the debut of Rambo: First Blood.

An evening with Stallone was less than two hours long bit the audience could have listened to him for hours. We were captivated, enlightened and entertained. Even though back In 2002 Stallone was honored by the Video Dealers Software Association when he was presented with the “Action Star of the Millennium Award” and Stallone is only the third person in Hollywood history, after Charlie Chaplin and Orson Welles, to receive two Academy Awards nominations for the same film, for Best Original Screenplay & Best Actor, its clear he’s much more than just an actor.

On January 24, he will be seen starring in Grudge Match co-starring with his new best pal Robert DeNiro. “It was great working with Bobby” we laugh a lot together”. I told him ‘I thought you were crap at that scene. I didn’t really believe you”. He replied “I thought u sucked too” lolol

In March, 2014, Rocky the Musical will open at The Winter Garden on Broadway. The musical is based on the original film written by Stallone with music by Stephen Flaherty and Lyrics by Lynn Ahrens (Ragtime).

To end the evening, the London Palladium inducted him live on stage into their newly created Palladium Hall of Fame – a room with panel of photos celebrating the greatest artists to appear on the stage. A photo was taken backstage before the show by Press Association photographer Jonathan Brady, and Stallone will go into the wall panel of American superstars, including Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr and Bob Hope.

Bishu Chakraborty, Managing Director of Really Useful Theatre Group said: “I have never ever seen a Palladium reception like the one Mr Stallone received tonight. The entire theatre were on their feet cheering and screaming as he arrived onstage. It was an unforgettable sound.”

Hollywood Mr Fixit, Rocco Buonvino, who produced the event with his partner Joe Ricotta, said: “Mr Stallone was totally blown away by the reception he received in London tonight. He wasn’t expecting that reception. He was funny, revealing and he even sang a bit! The night was a total triumph. After presenting Al Pacino and now Sylvester Stallone both on stage at the world-famous London Palladium, I have more Hollywood superstars waiting in the wings to get up close and personal with their UK fans. Watch this space!”

As Mr Stallone left the Palladium for a private jet from Luton airport to Los Angeles, his people carrier was chased down the street by over 100 screaming fans. As it reached a red light by Liberty’s, the vehicle was surrounded by a mob who started chanting “Rocky!” “Rocky!” “Rocky!” for several minutes before the light turned green and he could make his getaway.

This was one night Stallone finished smiling, slick suited, smoothly, without breaking a sweat.

JASMINES JUICE FEATURING ALESHA DIXON AND BRIT AWARDS NOMINATIONS PARTY!

ad1
JASMINE WITH ALESHA DIXON.

Always great to start the New Year with a positive talent that I’ve admired for over a decade. Miss Alesha Dixon was first introduced to me by my then boyfriend. She and I were dating two best friends from the same UK boy band. She told me she was in a band and they were trying to get signed. The band was Mis Teeq and years down the line they made it. She was always the sweetest most real person. No front, no issues or airs and graces. I liked her.
ad2
JASMINE WITH MIS TEEQ

Years on we worked together whilst I was at MTV. She was always the utmost professional and welcoming celeb. Never did I see her change. Totally down to earth and a right laugh. A lady that straddles the old skool manners and good upbringing with the street savvy know-how of being a mic spitter and taking on the boys at their own game.
ad3
JASMINE WITH ALESHA

Back then you were in two camps. Either you love her for her husky take no prisoners voice battering the mic at London’s garage raves (that’s me!), or you thought ‘’oh there’s that pretty girl with her voice on the mic again-. She was so hot that Pharrll Williams called to make her the lead girl on his video ‘’she wants to move’’ that was one in the eye for Harvey. She went from one of the cutest guys in UK music to the uber talented man god Pharrell!

The domineering men in the game didn’t faze Alesha. She and her band mates never showed the public if there was any backstage tension between them, she was innocently openly in love with her next boyfriend Harvey whom she married. Things turned ugly there but after the national scandal they both moved on to happier lives.

JASMINE WITH MIS TEEQ

I recall Alesha confiding in me about whether or not she should take the strictly come dancing role years ago. She feared the public wouldn’t take her music career seriously after it. Years down the line her courage paid off. Now she’s not just a chart music game, she’s a household name. She embodies qualities every young lady should aspire to. She’s classy, understated and knows herself.

I went down to St Martin’s lane hotel to congratulate her on her debut fragrance launch. Its her first dabble into the perfume world. When asked why she wanted to go down the fragrance path, Alesha said “Every girl loves perfume, and as a business woman it’s about expanding my brand and trying new ventures.”

She told me

‘’Today I launched my first fragrance Rose Quartz! I’m very excited, as I have been working on it for quite some time. I took my first meeting on it back in 2009! It was important to create a fragrance that I genuinely loved and I wanted to get it right. It is inspired by my love of crystals and their healing properties. Rose Quartz is the stone that promotes positive energy, self worth and love. I hope all women will love It as much as I do’’ She explained: ‘It’s a floral symphony with opening notes of bergamot, grapefruit, geranium and magnolia throughout’’

She hinted that her next fragrance will be named after her daughter Azura Sienna. ‘’’It’s called the crystal collection because if you come to my house it’s full of crystals. I have a crystal bible in my bedroom. My Mum is a bit of a hippy! She collects crystals – they all have healing properties and I wanted the fragrance to mirror this. ‘I wanted the packing and bottle to be heavyweight and beautiful I am surprised you can’t smell it now I’ve got 100ml’s on me! There’s nothing worse than buying a perfume that you are scared to use’’.

Alesha wore a House of Holland dress with Sophia Webster shoes and was so pleased with the launch ‘’the launch was lovely! I Left Azura with her daddy today, it was my first day back at work, I was a little nervous leaving her but it all worked out fine’’.

Alesha is now the embodiment of yummy mummy and MILF all in one but whilst she may be a totally classy lady her perfume is not overpriced and expensive. It is priced at £25.00 for 50ml and will be available to buy from leading fragrance outlets from March 2014.
Janelle Monae - The Electric Lady playback party
JASMINE AND JANELLE (PIC PAUL H)

Rounded off the week at ITV Studios for the Brit Awards nominations announcement. All the usual young whippersnapper suspects were out in full force in their trendy print t-shirts and beanie hats and heels. Great to see the Brits panel looking forwards at the future youth in music instead of backwards at majority oldies as they usually do. Whilst David Bowie was acknowledged, the rest were fresh and futuristic. Bastille and disclosure are unique and very un pop star like. There are nominations for other new artists including Rudimental, London Grammar, Laura Mvula, John Newman and Naughty Boy. The balance between UK urban and the rest seems genuinely fair in comparison to previous years when British urban based acts have been over looked, but with Laura Mvula, Rudimental and Naughty Boy getting nominations, the Brits and the UK music industry is a much healthier place than it was a decade ago. (I was particular cuffed that a favourite Janelle Monae was nominated!)
I was most excited about a new category that they announced- British video. Lets see if that encourages video directors to pull their finger out and persuade record label video commissioners to be a bit more experimental and creative than the usual booty twerking nonsense they’ve been spoon feeding our youth for the past decade.
Jessie J told me she was happy that so many styles of different music were being acknowledged and that soul was making a comeback. Rudimental said they had put in over 7 years of hard work before this point of recognistion. Favourite past Brit performances included Jarvis Cockers bum moment and Lady Gagas recent madness. The artists going this year said they’d start thinking of what rebellious stuff they could do to grab the publics attention….like throw M&M sweeties at each other! lol
This years show takes place at the O2 in London on Wednesday 19 February. Ellie Goulding has been announced as the latest live act to perform on the night, joining Katy Perry, Bruno Mars and Rudimental. Goulding won the Brits critics’ choice award back in 2010, a prize that this year will be awarded to singer Sam Smith. (I told you about him in my pre Christmas predictions!).
FINAL NOTE- my take on the Celebrity Big Brother Evander Holyfield gaygate drama is a Voltaire quote I live by ‘’ ‘I do not agree with what you have to say, but I’ll defend to the death your right to say it.’

JASMINES JUICE featuring CELEBRITY SELL OUTS!

JD-ALICIA2
ALICIA KEYS- TOOK THE CHEQUE!

So we ended the year with positive vibes, congratulating those that had made a mark on society and their field of business. But it’s the New Year and time for some real talk. Here is the Dotiwala NOT the New Years Honours list.

I am all about the hustle, making paper, getting caked, call it what you will. But you’ve got to be able to do it honorably or your reputation suffers and people stop respecting your moves.

Given the “any revenue is good revenue” mantra adapted by the music biz in the wake of the digital revolution, that is, make money by any means necessary; the product placement monster is now on steroids! It’s always been about being all about the Benjamin’s in hip-hop but have we gone too far? For people whose definition of success is directly related to their assets you can never go too far. They’ll travel to Timbuktu for their free lunch- not recalling that there’s no such thing as a free lunch. These days it’s all about blowing money fast (Rick Ross), straight cash and buko money (French Montana).

I recall at every company I’ve ever worked at that we have long sessions with corporate lawyers telling us not to ever accept payola or gifts worth over £200 from external clients, as that’s when we would be hauled over a furnace and given our marching orders. But no such rules nowadays for celebs and products.

People and extra curricular partnerships will always exist. Head of not very huge company decides to approach a very famous celeb with a huge cant say no offer to be their brand ambassador. There are so many good successful stories. Adidas and David Beckham, Beyonce (and every other female star) and L O’real, Puffy and Ciroc vodka, Pepsi and Nike in the movie back to the future, Manolo Blahnik and Sex and the City, Beyonce with Pepsi, Taylor Swift for diet coke, the list goes on and on.

Rihannas partnership with River Island works as all the clothes actually do look like they were designed by Riri (or her stylist-no matter), her fans buy into it as the River Island mannequins look like her. Also we believe Lady Gaga and diet coke go together-just look at how skinny this chic is now!

The biggest success story of recent years which made every music manager look up and have their head spin around 360 degrees was the now blueprint deal of rapper 50 Cent’s deal with Vitamin Water manufacturer Glaceau. In the early 2000s, Vitamin Water was attempting to break out beyond the health food market. Fitness buff 50 Cent, then the hottest rapper in the world, had been seen drinking the vitamin water and paying for it regularly himself, so the company approached him for a plug. Thanks to the foresight of his late manager, Chris Lighty, instead of a hired spokesman, 50 became a full creative partner with a signature flavor — Formula 50 — and a minority share of the company. With his involvement, the drink took off, and when Coca-Cola acquired Glaceau for $4.1 billion, 50 saw his personal portfolio swell by a reported $100 million. Now that’s a real believe deal.

Music industry stalwart Steve Stoute, recently named Ad Age’s 2013 executive of the year, jumped ship from Interscope as head of urban music in 2004 to found the Translation advertising agency, which was instrumental in bringing Justin Timberlake to Bud Light beer and many other music stars to mainstream brands.
Suddenly failed A&R men worldwide decided they would all do a Steve Stoute and act as a conduit between celebrities and brands. (Basically pimp out their music mates for 20% commission). Don’t let anyone tell you its all business. Real business managers see their act and a brand that elevates their client and enhances their reputation. A pimp manager reads that brand XYZ has millions and will spin any angle to make their client fit. Forcing a square into a circular hole.

There have been some messy examples. MTV signing up ambassadors that don’t necessarily support the pro-social cause but want more MTV exposure.
Similarly, there are horrible examples like Alicia Keys, for example, who raised some eyebrows and had us all roaring with ‘’she took the cheque’’ laughter when she was announced as ‘’creative directorship at Blackberry’’. We laughed harder a few weeks later when a post on her personal Twitter account was marked “sent from my iPhone.” (She claims she was hacked)

Dan Charnas, author of “The Big Payback: The History of the Business of Hip-Hop,” says

‘’when has Alicia Keys ever had the aesthetic to be a creative director of anything except an album? “It’s a title that makes the artist feel better about any misgivings they have about whoring themselves out to a company. But the fact of the matter is, if it’s a good combination, if it’s organic, then there’s nothing whorish about it. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with it, especially in this environment.”

Similarly when James Bond actor Daniel Craig started lyricizing positively about Heineken we all sat up and dropped our shaken not stirred martinis in disbelief. More eyebrows were raised when world sprint champ Usain Bolt paired up with Richard Bransons Virgin brand, the fastest man on earth married to the slowest internet provider online. He took the cheque. You gotta admire their balls.

My personal shudder factor goes into overdrive at gifting rooms at awards shows. Basically, a huge room backstage where minor celebs sprint to be gifted free stuff. Usually lingerie, drinks, mobile phones and sports brands. You’ll never find a bonafide superstar in these rooms as they either have things gifted discreetly or can buy it for themselves with no shame of prostituting themselves out to brands who pray they will tweet about them. I was at a gifting room this year when a c list DJ on a small radio station was grabbing stuff for his mums, wife’s and sisters Christmas presents. Cheap or clever?
FB naughty boy
NAUGHTY BOY KEEPS IT REAL AND BUYS HIS OWN CHICKEN.

Naughty Boy told me this year he didn’t want a Nandos black card as he could afford to buy all the chicken in the world and still sleep at night knowing he hadn’t pimped himself out. A slap in the face to the teamUK lads all tweeting about their Nandos black cards.

Celebs will take the cheque for doing no work at all. A simple tweet can earn thousands. Snoop Dogg gave props on Twitter to an ad for the Toyota Sienna minivan. Actress Tori Spelling linked to a website for rental cars. And reality TV star Khloe Kardashian gushed about the brand of jeans that accentuates the famous Kardashian behind. “Want to know how Old Navy makes your butt look scary good? Ask a Kardahian,” Khloe tweeted. Cringe!
A tweet from Khloe Kardashian Odom costs about $8,000, and one from singer Ray J is about $2,300, according to prices listed by social media marketer Izea.

Most intelligent clued up punters can probably tell when they are being sold fake product placement. If they don’t, they deserve the crap they’re buying.

VARIETY tells us that Steve Angello, one-third of the recently-disbanded Swedish House Mafia, wasted little time after the supergroup’s spring farewell tour to begin setting up his solo-career brand deals. Before even revealing album-release dates or touring plans, he went public with a partnership with Kraft, (foods) for which he will help promote a new energy drink dubbed MiO, designing a signature flavor and debuting new music on the company’s platform. He says without the ability to be creatively involved with the product and the marketing campaign, it wouldn’t have made sense.

“It’s just hard to find big brands like Kraft foods that are willing to be creative,” he says. “I’ve been approached in the past by big brands to do something weird that wouldn’t fit me. “If a cell phone brand came to me and asked, ‘do you want to be involved?’ I’d say ‘sure, but can I change the phones?’ … I don’t think you could really just put a product in my hand just for cash.”

Not all stars agree. This past fortnight a whole host of superstars from John Travolta, Faye Dunaway, Jerry Hall, Lindsay Lohan, Queen Latifah, Jermaine Dupri, Diana Ross and more all turned up to a young South Asian Princes New Years Eve party at The Dorchester. Can you imagine being so desperate to surround yourself with celebrities that you pay them all to simply turn up? And I’m not talking expenses; they’re receiving between £100,000 and over a million depending on what they’re prepared to do. Turn up/ turn up/sit on his table/ turn up/sing. Also, how desperate for a pay cheque do these celebs have to be to accept as opposed to spending this special time of year with their own nearest and dearest? Says a lot about what money can buy. Yes it can buy you celebs but not happiness!

So my NOT the New Year Honours List awards go to all the celebs picking up cash for a short term financial fix, but that have sold their souls and reputations down the line and to all the brands paying them big bucks- congratulations- you just threw your hard earned cash down the pan! 2014 is a year to honestly value yourself and your brands better. A pay off in 2014 wont help you sleep at night when you’re broke and a laughing stock in 2015.
Me? Bitter? Yes a little.

JASMINES JUICE FEATURING 12 YEARS A SLAVE AND…CLIFF RICHARD!

slave3
JASMINE ON A GIRLS MOVIE NIGHT OUT- WITH (L-R) DIANE LEPART-INVESTMENT FUND MANAGER, KANYA KING-MOBO CEO, JODIE DALMEA-PR, COUNCILLOR CLAUDIA WEBBE.

Happy New Year! I hope you all had a great holiday period? I ended the year with a relaxed one for once. It had been a hectic year and I needed to step back and reflect. I think the number of black oppression films I viewed just before Christmas also added to my sombre mood. It was a strange year as the movies about racial conscious came thick and fast. The film world is seeing a Black Film Renaissance but why did all the films have to be so depressing? I know these stories have to be told but like the same complaint we make on TV, don’t we have any feel good films to balance this stuff out?
First The Help, D’Jango , Mandela, then The Butler,. We complain that there aren’t enough roles for black actors then a whole bunch of films come along with roles for black thespians, yet they’re all depressing. It’s a lose -lose situation right here!

Whilst The Help was horrific, D’Jango was tragic it had humorous moments and was sold as a cowboy comedy in part. Mandela was a serious autobiographical tale told well against a background of apartheid. The Butler was based on a real story but it was a watchable story of sentiment. In 2014 we can expect the biopics about Martin Luther King and James Brown, so expect more sweetening up of real stories right there.

However, 12years a Slave, which is out to the UK public this month, is something you need to be mentally and emotionally prepared for. I was invited by my friend MOBO CEO Kanya King to go to a private early screening in December.

The film is the extraordinary story of a free man torn from his family in New York in 1841 and enslaved in the South. In the pre-Civil War United States, Solomon Northup, a free black man from upstate New York, is abducted and sold into slavery. Facing cruelty at the hands of a malevolent slave owner, as well as unexpected kindnesses, Solomon struggles not only to stay alive, but to retain his dignity. In the twelfth year of his unforgettable odyssey, Solomon’s chance meeting with a Canadian abolitionist will forever alter his life.

12 years is even being tipped to become the first film by a black director to win the Oscar for best picture at the Academy Awards in March.

The reason I think thismovie has touched audiences most with its realistic portrayal of slavery isbecause a pair of Britons finally brought the true horror and real take on this comprehensive take on America’s scarred heritage to the country’s silver screens. The other films add comedy and sentiment to the American story of slavery whilst the British filmmakers really don’t mess about.

The movie had all the press and celebs at Cineworld in Haymarket in tears. There were audible gasps andsobs all the way through the film screening just before Christmas. Its great that the younger generations who may not have watched Roots in its hey day can view this and take in just how recent slavery was. It took place during my own great grandparents era so not that far removed from today. No wonder communities still have deep psychological issues with society! After the film screening the director and lead man did a Q&A session with the audiencewhere they told of their experience making the film and how they wanted it to be a true reflection of a horrific historical period. One thing that struck me was a quote by director Steve McQueen. He said ‘’tragic and terrible things happen on beautiful days all the time’’ one persons great sunny day is another’s day of devastation’’

In making this film, black British director Steve McQueen, and lead man -actor Chiwetel Ejiofor, have shed light on unresolved tensions in a nation where African-Americans remain disproportionately poor, badly educated and locked behind bars, even as they are led by their first black president. It has made Americas sit up and question much. Will it do the same in the UK this month?

cliff
SIR CLIFF RICHARD!

From black oppression to white pop legend. I was fortunate to hear my mums fave childhood crush- Sir Cliff Richard- talk to The Wireless, Age UK’s radio station where he was fascinating to listen to but things that he said that stood out to me included him praising upcoming musicians but worries about how they are treated. He said: “When you think about it, even the losers on X-Factor are good. I mean, they’re really good singers these days. “When you think of One Direction, five of them, they all lost. None of them won X-Factor and they’re the biggest boy band in the World at the moment.”

Cliff is in that league of diverse music acts like Dolly Parton and Cher whom the black community love to love and play proudly at home. However, he expressed some concern about how bands are supported, “I don’t think the new groups and young singers have the same support system. Today you can have a number one, if your next record’s not number one sometimes they won’t re-sign. It’s because they don’t have the same faith in the artists that my producer and manager Norrie Paramour and Peter Gormley had.”

He also expressed his amazement at his latest album, his 100th album, saying, “I cannot believe how this could happen to me. I look back and think I didn’t have all those lessons and classes and stuff. I had nothing to fall back on. I mean this is ludicrous. And if people don’t understand why, join the queue, I’m at the head of the queue; I have no idea why.” that floored me!? his 100th album? Can you imagine? At aged 73 this man has just released his 100th album!.

Asked about whether he is thinking of retiring, Sir Cliff said, “Here I am at 73, and I’m not sure that retire is really in my vocabulary, but what I want to do sometimes is just stop. And so therefore in the future I might try and figure out how I can just stop.” But fans of the musician should not panic as he went on to say, “And then start whenever I want to again.”
Just hearing his get up and go attitude to life makes me feel like a sloth! I need to keep up with Cliff in 2014!

JASMINES JUICE- 2013 END OF YEAR REVIEW! THE DOTIWALA AWARDS!

NYC1
WITH MY FAVOURITE NYC ANNUAL FESTIVE ART – ACROSS THE STREET FROM RADIO CITY MUSIC HALL.

The last 12 months have flown by! I just returmed from New York after a very festive week!. Did you achieve all you desired? A great friend once shared her family tradition with me and now I do this with my nearest and dearest. We all gather at Christmas dinners and pop into a box a list with our 5 desires for the next year. We share them with each other before putting them into the joint box and then one of us seals it. When we gather again a year later we open the box to see what’s been achieved. This makes us not only put our desires out into the universe- speak on it and it will come to you- but also means now we have shared our ambitions with others we are under pressure to actually take steps to make them happen.
NYC2
WITH MY SECOND FAVOURITE ANNUAL NYC FESTIVE ART-USED TO THINK IT WAS LIPSTICKS UNTIL CLOSER INSPECTION REVEALED CHRISTMAS LIGHTS LOL!

Last year mine included making the final months of my fathers life as comfortable as possible and sharing conversations with him that I’ll never have the chance to have again. It also included a wish to concentrate solely on my mother after he passed so she could really make the most of her life and enjoy her elder years- I just took her to New York for her first trip out there last week – she had a once in a lifetime experience. It made us both so happy.
Last year I had also added that I wanted to share as many perks of my job with everyone around me. I share the love whether its music gig tickets, fancy balls, goody bags, books and so on. It makes me feel good. The more i give, the more i get back in positive energy. The harder I work the luckier I get!
NYC3
WHILST IN NY NELSON MANDELA PASSED. THIS WAS THE HARLEM APOLLO SIGN.

I had additionally also wanted to work in an environment where I could scale down the rock & roll side of the job and still do what I am skilled up to do- work in the broadcast media industry- but to balance that with giving back to others. I do this with the LONDON360 TV show, which brings in 120 young 18-25 year olds annually from across London’s capital and teaches them EVERYTHING about being a one man/woman TV/radio/print press/multi media genius. These reporters make TV features about London and act as a mini Reuters style news hub. Their hard work has paid off as this March their show and they themselves have been hired for a brand new London TV channel!
The only thing I could’ve done better on is making more time to exercise and finally do that ballroom dancing course I’ve always wanted to- so that will be going on this years list with the rest. Will you make a list too? Let me know what’s on it. I’d love to hear what your ambitions are.

Here are other people who achieved well this year in my humble opinion.

PHARRELL WINS MY BALLER OF THE YEAR AWARD WITH HIS HUGE YET UNDERSTATED COMEBACK.
laura mvula 2013
LAURA MVULA WINS MY BALLER-LADY IN MUSIC 2013!

Once again UK urban music acts continued to do well and pimped out the music charts both nationally and internationally. Honourable mentions go to Rita Ora, Naughty Boy, Tinie Tempah, Wretch32, Rihanna, Jay Z, and Emeli Sande but my BALLERS OF THE YEAR IN MUSIC crown goes to Bruno Marrs for an exceptionally strong body of work that works in the charts, on radio and parties, Pharrell for having the global charts on lock with his happy two-step grooves all year, Laura Mvula who came with the realer than real self, velvet vocals and brumy accent and smashed all music charts and finally Queen Bee Beyonce who flew in at the last minute and changed the game with new rules, like her hubby, by releasing a whole new album with videos with no promo!
jas_idris.2013JPG
IDRIS ELBA WINS MY MOVIE MYSTRO OF THE YEAR 2013.

In the movie and small screen world, actors and directors that get a nod include Noel Clarke who silently, humbly continues to make diverse films and bring in more and more young uns like Femi Oyeniran under his reign as well as act in blockbusters like Star Trek. Ashley Walters for his consistent appearance on mainstream TV and film. However, MOVIE MYSTRO OF THE YEAR Idris Elba takes the gold for killing it this year with his triple threat acts of Mandela, Luther and continues to push his passion with his on going music career.
Chuka-Umunna-MP-460x270
MP CHUKKA UMANNA WINS MY POLITICAL POWERPLAYER OF THE YEAR 2013!

Politics has never been stronger on the public agenda with mainstream events like the Woolwich murder, youth unemployment and immigration issues. So many great organisations are stepping up to make a pro-social difference. Orgs like Spirit of London Awards, One Big Community, the Amy Winehouse Foundation and more are stepping up to take ownership and make a change. However my POLITICAL POWERPLAYERS OF 2013 are the UKYP (UK Youth parliament) who are slowly and steadily making changes to students learning across the UK with their ‘curriculum for life’’ studies now being taught across UK, as well as young south London MP Chukka Umunna who has made a sharp rise in profile and helps engage more of the young and black community into politics in a refreshing new way.

SAMUEL BENTA AND CHARLENE WHITE WIN MY MEDIA MAVEN AND MAJOR OF THE YEAR AWARD 2013!
Charlene-White-pic-31

In 2013, more black and minority ethnic students are taking media studies as degree subjects than ever. We are making strides in having our faces seen and voices heard in the mainstream media. Young faces are grinding away daily to generate new platforms for media digestion. Special nods in my MEDIA MAVENS AND MAJORS go to Huffington Post editor Carla Buzasi, Radio 1 newsreader Tina Daheley, KissFMs Rickie & Melvin, Capital Xtras multi talented Kojo, Radio 1Xtras Sarah Jane Crawford and Charlie Sloth, SBTV’s Liam Toothill, and Maleena Pone –former LONDON360 reporter about to blow up on mainstream TV this coming year. This year my winners are young screenwriter and actor Samuel Benta for having his online TV series ‘’All about the McKenzie’s’’ commissioned by new London TV channel London Live which launches in March, as well as ITV News reader Charlene White who sits on our news screens daily delivering London’s news with style and panache and being strong enough to withstand social media abuse and stand her ground when abused this year for her decision not to wear a poppy onscreen.

george
GEORGE THE POET WINS MY SPOKEN WORDSMITH WIZ OF THE YEAR 2013.

In the arts and culture world, the art of the spoken word has had a fire reignited within poetry genres, young new names like female poetess Hollie Mcnish who is selling out venues and performing at the iconic Abbey Road Studios, MC Akala continues to move mountains with his hip-hop Shakespeare movement, young black gay poet Dean Atta who is fast and topical with his content. However my SPOKEN WORDSMTH WIZ award of 2013 goes to a young man breaking boundaries in music charts and performing live at sold out venues with politically, thought provoking conscious content- stand up George the Poet-inspiring a whole new generation of articulate fans.

Darcus Beese
DARCUS BEESE WINS MY INDUSTRY INSIDER INGENUITY AWARD OF THE YEAR 2013!

None of these stars would be stars without the insiders working for their advancement daily. The press, marketing and PR departments at brands are the secret make or break teams that influence what you see, hear and watch daily. People that deserve a shout out in 2013 are Industry players like Twin B- both brothers but in particular Alec ‘Twin B’ Boateng was appointed Artist & Repertoire (A&R) director of Atlantic Records UK, Music manager Zeon Richards who has worked hard to have his artists become household names. His multi-talented roster which includes George The Poet, Jacob Banks, Wizzy Wow, Knox Brown and artist Funny Tummy is lead by Wretch 32. Kwame Kwaten – music manager of the year- manages this years big shotter Laura Mvula- formerly managed singer Rumer, but with Laura proved it wasn’t just a one off, Sonia Meggie who runs the Inspirational You sessions, connecting people and opening minds, the hip hop worlds photographer to the stars- Paul Hampartsoumian- man that has loyaly captured the music scene on his lens for the past two decades, Princess Nyah empowering young ladies with her sessions, Yvonne Thompson- a very successful business woman that’s campaigning to get more women and BAME awardees on the Queens honours list. However, the INDUSTRY INSIDER INGENUITY AWARD must go to Darcus Beese –Island Records President (Amy Winehouse etc) – this year marks 20 years in his job-that’s a milestone right there for any man let alone a black man in a very male white world!

google adrian
GOOGLES ADRIAN JOSEPH – GOOGLE WINS MY BOMBASTIC BRAND BALLER OF THE YEAR 2013!.

It’s always important to understand that none of these industry insiders could do their jobs well without the support and empowerment of the brands that they represent. Brands that continue to champion and empower the community with events or resource like THE VOICE, BET, Flava Magazine, Adidas and more need a nod, but its Google who have stepped up this year and opened their doors welcoming people from all walks of life with their community engagement projects that win the BOMBASTIC BRAND BALLER of the year 2013.

PEOPLE TO LOOK OUT FOR IN 2014- NOEL CLARKES NEW MUSIC SIGNING TZY!

People to look out for in 2014 include Noel Clarkes new music signing-a young man called TZY, singer Delilah who may have lost her UK record deal but was swiftly picked up by none other than the music legend- Prince- who has been flying her out to his studio in Minneapolis to record with his team. British singer-songwriter Sam Smith who already has a No.1 under his belt after featuring on Naughty Boy’s ‘La La La’ and 23-year-old Kwabs who reflects a mixture of his African roots with RnB & Gospel influences set against a backdrop of electro-synthesized soul. Maybe we’ll see some of them on my 2014 end of year champions list!

JASMINE WITH REVEREND GEORGE HARGREAVES AND ACTRESS ELLEN THOMAS AT THE BLACK NATIVITY PREMIERE.

Fox Searchlight Pictures & Reverend George Hargreaves invited me to a Gala Preview of the new Hollywood musical film- Black Nativity. The film stars an all-star lineup including Jennifer Hudson, Mary j Blige, Nasir Jones, Forrest Whittaker, Angela Basset, Tyrese Gibson and more. It’s a joyous Christmas musical, told through uplifting, soulful gospel sounds and featuring a stellar line up of academy award winning stars and R&B superstars. It’s the story of Langston- a streetwise teen from Baltimore who journeys to New York to spend Christmas with his estranged grandparents. It’s a surprising and inspirational journey and along with new fiends and a little divine intervention, he discovers the true meaning of faith, healing and family.

The invitation only evening was held at the ornate Coronet Cinema in NottingHill Gate where a mini red carpet awaited our arrival. In the foyer meeting and greeting everyone was the Reverend George Hargreaves and already I could tell this was a promotional event with a difference. Not the usual press hacks or bloggers, the audience was a very different preview crowd than usual. All was soon revealed.

The reverend welcomed us all in the auditorium with a rousing welcome speech where he explains that this was a film that needed black audiences to visit the cinema and engage in the Christmas feel good spirit with its message, hence they’d invited a specially selected group of church leaders from all across the country to attend.

In the audience were a scattering of influencers and celebs including Sinitta with her gorgeous family in tow, Michael Jacksons nephews Tito Jackson’s son’s Taryll, Taj and TJ, who are better known as R&B /pop group 3T, Baroness Doreen Lawrence of Clarendon (who must’ve been in a bad mood as she refused to speak to us or take a photo in the press room!), lead singer of 80’s pop group imagination- Lee Johns, Miquel Brown (singer & actress), Pearly Gates (singer), Reverend Rose Hudson-Wilkin, chaplain to the House of Commons and the Queen, Pastor Nims Obunge, CEO of the Peace Alliance, Beverley de Gale & Orin Lewis, ACLT, Actor and singer Roger Wright, ex- Lion King, Thriller Live and ITV’s ‘Superstar’ , Ken Burton, judge on BBC 2’s eight-part series The Choir: ‘Sing While You Work’ fronted by choirmaster Gareth Malone.

After the film-which as promised was a great festive feel-good experience, we were asked to stay and mingle with drinks and food. If you’re looking for a film to watch with family and friends this Christmas this is a great option. Its out this week-December 6th- so lets show the movie houses that black entertainment movies can sell in the UK- after all, if we don’t prove that they do-then we cant complain that there is no industry here for us!

JASMINE WITH BIRTHDAY BOY RICHARD PASCOE (TOP RIGHT) AND FRIENDS.

Saturday night saw 300 Londoners ‘of a certain generation’ come together to celebrate the joint birthdays of iconic DJ’s Richie P and Matt White at the new, exclusive London Edition Hotel in Berners Street. The hotel is breath taking from the moment you step up to the doors and very New York in style and décor. For a hotel so stush, their staff manners were surprisingly polite, friendly and welcoming to a crowd for an urban event. (We all know how established high end establishments can be with black music nights). Anyway the staff couldn’t have been nicer leading to a very friendly warm night from the get go.

The basement clubroom is fully sound proofed, so even whilst the eighties classics were pumping hard baselines, the guests mere metres away above us weren’t disturbed on the ground floor. The party was a roadblock with personalized cocktails for the birthday boys (a rampant Richie and wicked White). The guests danced hard until 3am and I laughed at young un- CAPITAL XTRA DJ Kojo as he was clearly having more fun than I usually see him having at those young parties that only play grime and no one knows how to dance. This party was a sweatbox from start to finish from the jumping up and down. Great night!

ONE OF KINGSLEES CAKES WAS HIS LATEST ALBUM COVER.

The private party was full of Kingslees (Akalas real name) nearest and dearest and it was a night full of love, laughter and positive vines just as you’d expect from this mans close circle of friends. His mother, both grandmothers and an abundance of siblings joined him in sharing the two birthday cakes his ‘’wifey’’ had lovingly organized. One cake had his latest album artwork on it, whilst the other- suggested by his cousin- was a Wu Tang cake! Kingslee was laughing as they were presented to him alongside sparklers and champagne ‘’ I refuse to cut into a Wu Tang cake!’’

HOW TO MAKE IT IN MUSIC- BY BOB LEFSETZ (one of my favourite bloggers).

bob l
BOB LEFSETZ

Bob Lefsetz is an American music industry analyst and critic, and author of the email newsletter and blog, the Lefsetz Letter. The newsletter has tens of thousands of subscribers

PRACTICE

Your ability to play exceeds social networking.

Your chops are more important than your social skills. Frequently the best musicians are near mute, they speak through their music, which brings adoring fans to them.

First learn how to play. Everything else comes next.

WRITE

You can make it with other people’s songs, but it’s hard to sustain. Consider writing another club in your bag, not only does it give you more options it also makes you more attractive to labels and other investors.

RECORD

A great song translates with just you and your instrument on YouTube. But if it’s someone else’s song, you’re not going to go far. We all pass around YouTube covers, but none of the acts ever stick, because imitation is the sincerest form of flattery but it’s not the way into our hearts.

RECORD 2

Yes, if you hire name people and record in a top-notch studio your track will sound better, but ultimately it’s about the song. Slick means nothing if the song sucks.

DISTRIBUTE

Put your music everywhere. Starting on SoundCloud. It’s the default home of the wannabe. If you get any traction thereafter, get it on iTunes and Spotify, et al.

YOUTUBE

Comes after SoundCloud. A lyric video is good enough assuming people want to see it.

But if someone comes to your clip and the count is low it’s going to work against you, especially if you told people to go there.

HYPE

You start with your friends. And try not to burn out your friendships. Seed them with material. Listen to their feedback. Don’t lean on them to spread the word, if they like your material they will. If you give it to them and two weeks go by and you’re not hearing from other people, especially those you barely know or don’t know at all, your track wasn’t good enough. Maybe good enough for you, but not good enough to make it.

MAILING LISTS

Retain all the contact info of anybody who contacts you about your music. You want to know who your fans are.

MAILING LISTS 2

Put yourself in the shoes of your fans, look at it from their perspective, not yours. You may be frustrated you’re not more successful, but that’s not their problem. Only contact people when you think they’ll be thrilled to hear from you, when they’re interested in what you’ve got.

MAILING LISTS 3

If you’re getting positive feedback, feed information on a regular basis. If you’re seeding people and getting nothing back, the problem is you. Back to the drawing board. Yes, you may want to tell everybody they don’t get it and you’re misunderstood, that’s your prerogative, but that won’t help you make it.

TWITTER

Almost meaningless unless you’re already a star. Then it’s purely the cherry on top. And sundaes taste quite fine without the cherry. The problem with Twitter is most tweets go unseen. But if you notice retweets and feedback feeding the system is not a bad idea, as long as it doesn’t take your focus away from your music.

FACEBOOK

A home for looky-loos before you can afford your own URL/website. But don’t expect any virality on Facebook.

PLAYING LIVE

Comes last. It’s after you’ve learned how to play, practiced, written and recorded. If you put it first, you’re probably gonna be in trouble. Especially if you don’t know how to play and make mistakes. Yes, road chops are the best. But that’s assuming you’ve got somewhere to play. That’s the problem today, live music is not everywhere. Venues don’t want to pay and certainly don’t want to alienate their patrons. They’d rather spin records. So don’t beg anybody to play at their venue unless you’re going to make them money. That’s the cardinal rule. It’s your responsibility to bring people in, not theirs. Certainly if you’re completely unknown.

Having said all that, it’s not a bad idea to start out as a cover band. But use originals sparingly. And if people stop dancing and/or leave the room, pull them.

If you can get places to play, more power to you. But don’t put the cart before the horse.

BLOWING UP

It’s gonna happen slower than your wildest dreams. It’s gonna be long after your buddies have graduated from college and have careers and are starting families. If you’re not willing to risk it all and fail, music is not the business for you. And if you do fail, don’t complain, either get out or go back to the drawing board and work harder.

BLOWING UP 2

Your one big break is never the one you think it is, and is oftentimes a series of mini-breaks.

TV CONTESTS

Are about the shows, not the talent, about advertising, not music. At first, they were such a hit surprise this wasn’t completely true, but Kelly Clarkson made it a decade ago. Contests are short cuts that usually lead nowhere. They tar your resume.

MERCH

Assuming people come to see you, and like you, they’ll want to buy something from you, to evidence both their support and their identity. T-shirts are great, but make sure they’re well-designed and made with good materials, otherwise people will buy once, if that, and never again. As for CDs…this is what they’re made for, live gigs. They’re souvenirs. The music is available easily online. But personalized, signed product is not.

A MANAGER

No act makes it without one. Don’t sign a contract if you can get away with it. If you do, give up no more than twenty percent, hopefully fifteen. And hire a MUSIC BUSINESS LAWYER to negotiate the deal, not your dad’s attorney buddy. Whatever you spend will be a pittance compared to how screwed you will be if you actually make it and have signed a bad deal. The bottom line is when you start no one good wants to manage you, and chances are you’re going to leave your initial garage manager for someone more experienced. It’s gonna cost you, remember that.

AN AGENT

More important than a label these days. Agents work on commission, usually ten percent. And they don’t like to work for free. So if you’re not making any money, an agent isn’t gonna wanna represent you. I know it’s a conundrum. You need an agent to get work, but you can’t get an agent unless you’ve got work. Figure it out. Oftentimes it’s the drummer who both manages the band and gets gigs before professionals get involved. As to why it’s the drummer, we’re still trying to figure that out.

A LABEL

You might feel good you’re signed, but that don’t mean diddly-squat if it’s an indie who neither distributes nor promotes you. Give up rights commensurate with how much you’re being paid. Up front. Upon delivery. Guarantees of marketing and promotion are worthless, even if they’re in the contract. If you’re not getting any money, you want it to be a one or two album deal, with a hefty royalty rate and a return of rights upon termination of the deal or shortly thereafter.

A MAJOR LABEL

You give to get. Your deal will be lousy unless you don’t need them. If you’re pulling in thousands of people a night and tracks are flying out of the iTunes Store the major label will cut you a good deal, otherwise they won’t. And just because you have the deal don’t expect the label to break you. The hard work is just beginning. Give them tools, i.e. music. And play nice. Otherwise the label will blackball you, they don’t need troublemakers, unless they’re guaranteed revenue makers. And major labels only want acts they can easily market and profit from, i.e. radio acts. Remember that. If you’re not one of these, a major label deal is worthless, furthermore you won’t get one.

TRACTION

Comes slower than you expect once you’ve got a deal. It’s all work with very little reward for a very long time. In other words, if you’re not willing to enter the Ironman competition, don’t be a musician. Just when you’ve scaled one hill, there’s a mountain range looming in the distance.

HITS

You need more than one to sustain a career.

MONEY

Comes long after you think it should. Not only does the label take most of it, what you deserve isn’t rendered for eons, that’s the nature of royalties.

GETTING SCREWED

It goes with the territory. You’re never going to receive what you’ve earned. You just hire the best people and try to get the most you can.

SUCCESS

Won’t be as sweet as you think it’ll be. But don’t freak out in the middle of it. Because we need neither you nor your act. Do your best to be humble and sustain. Otherwise, you’ll be replaced.

EXCEPTIONS TO THE ABOVE

Exist. But they’re rare. Do you want to bank on being the exception?

JASMINES JUICE explores at the FREEMASONS BALL and starts Christmas with D&G!

MASON INVITE

Alongside the conspiracies that the original moon landing was fake, that 9/11 was orchestrated by the USA government, and the idea that the C.I.A invented and planted the deadly AIDS virus to wipe out homosexuals and African Americans, is the age old favourite – that secret societies rule the world.

I’ve been listening to scare stories about the illuminate and Freemasons for over two decades in the music industry, and have had a vague interest and intrigue about the group. In the past I haven’t bothered to actively pursue this fascination, but in recent years on finding out that close family members have in the past been masons and a couple still currently are (but refuse to tell me anything!), I’ve been more interested in finding out more about them.
mason cups

Coincidently this past the month the Freemasons put on a Ball, a white tie charity ball that revived a 150-year-old masonic social tradition. I was invited to both the ball and their building at Great Queen Street in Covent Garden to ask anything I liked and get a feel of the event so hoping to make their brand more open and inclusive to the general public.
MM VENUE
ENTRANCE TO THE BALL

The ball was as grand and opulent as expected and 1,000 guests turned up at the HAC – a very grand venue flanked in burning flames and sports cars, in the heart of Moorgate- to experience ‘’the best of English tradition, entertainment, and hospitality’’ and all money raised on the night went to two charities- Combat Stress and the Royal College of Surgeons.
MM TABLES

Hosted by the Masonic lodges of the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge, and with guests from several London lodges, the University Lodges’ Ball was open to members of the public too. Sponsors for the ball included Aerice consultancy who were headline sponsors, other sponsors included Davidoff, William Evans (guns and shooting accessories) and Fuller’s (beers).

The ballroom was filled with gentlemen in White Tie and ladies in magnificent evening dresses for what I was promised would be ‘’a night of sparkling conversation, entertainment, and dancing’’.

Whilst mingling pre-dinner and taking in the champagne reception and string quartet, all I could think of and smile about, was the fixation that my friend had e-mailed me the night before, warning me not to attend. He said

‘‘they are among us. Blood-drinking, flesh-eating, shape-shifting extra-terrestrial reptilian humanoids with only one objective in their cold-blooded little heads: to enslave the human race. They are our leaders, our corporate executives, our beloved Oscar-winning actors and Grammy-winning singers, and they’re responsible for the Holocaust, the Oklahoma City bombings and the 9/11 attacks … at least according to former BBC sports reporter David Icke, who became the poster human for the theory in 1998 after publishing his first book, The Biggest Secret, which contained interviews with two Brits who claimed members of the royal family are nothing more than reptiles with crowns. They supposedly count among their number Queen Elizabeth, George W. Bush, Henry Kissinger, Bill and Hillary Clinton and Bob Hope. Encroaching on other conspiracy theorists’ territory, Icke even claims that the lizards are behind secret societies like the Freemasons and the Illuminati’’

I put this to a few of the guests I mingled with who laughed and warned me to prepare for the drinking from skulls part of the evening post dinner. Others giggled and said the rumours were silly and that you could see by this evening that ‘’we provide more charity than any other group on the planet’’. One of my uncles is a mason and tells me that they are ‘’simply a group of men that like to unwind after a hard week at work, together over a meal, and do good work for their communities and society together’’ Some think that despite donating heaps of cash to charity, they’re secretly plotting your undoing at Masonic temples across the world.
MM DEP GM
FREEMASON DEPUTY GRAND MASTER JONATHAN SPENCE.

To me it seems like a funny, yet uber cool fixation. On one hand its as if the Masons are a bit like Boy Scouts for middle-aged men. In the 1950s, if you wanted to get on in the law, banking or politics, being a Mason was obligatory so on went the suit and the winking eye with secret handshakes they were all proud of. On the other hand imagine setting up a group or gang that is global, has the reputation of power yet so many amazingly dangerous misconceptions. A pretty secretive, strong brand that’s not even trying to sell us anything! They should consider selling mason branded golf clubs, aftershave, cigars, whiskey, shooting apparel, an airline and clothing.

Whilst they may not be trying to sell us anything, others are eager to hang onto their coat tails. This month a new nightclub has replaced the old Movida club and calls itself Mason House with all the visual hints at being associated with the fraternity, but the Freemasons I met were quick to distance themselves from it.
The ball committee told me that there were three reasons for the ball to be held aside from the historical; to have fun, to raise money for their charities and to contribute to the developing openness of freemasonry and help with the general public opinion of it.

We also spoke to a lady mason….

“I am here today as a Lady mason, so I can talk to some females who have a genuine interest in Masonry, to understand what it is about and how they can get involved.

I joined Masonry about a year ago, but it took me about a year to decide that I wanted to proceed and be initiated in the First degree. I did a lot of research beforehand, a lot of reading.”

Talking about what made her want to become a Lady Mason, she revealed:

“I was fortunate to meet some young male masons on the social circuit, who made me aware of a lecture taking place at Freemason’s Hall on the theme of Dan Brown’s book, ‘The Lost Symbol’. As I had been reading the book at the time, I was intrigued and went along to the event.

At the drinks reception afterwards, I met my future mentor, who enlightened me that his mother had been a Lady mason. He thought I would find Masonry enlightening, given I had expressed my deep interest in ancient civilizations particularly, Egypt. This was a groundbreaking piece of information, as I had been reminded many times, by male Masons that the fraternity was only for men; and that ‘gender rules’ would unlikely change in the future. My mentor had an entirely different approach, given he had joined Masonry because his mother had inspired him to do so!

Initially, I found out about co-masonry, which was conceived in France in 1882, when the first female was initiated into Freemasonry.

I was then introduced to the idea of joining an Order, specifically for women. I chose the latter for several reasons. Firstly, I attended an all girls’ school and in hindsight believe that having boys around would have been a major distraction with regard to study – the same ethos I applied to Masonry. One only needs to look at the Mosque or Synagogue and see that many places of reverence, require men and women to be separated – and this I believe is to assist the individual focus on what they are doing, saying, hearing etc.

There is also the issue that the United Grand Lodge of England, although may ‘acknowledge’ female masons in a social context, the Order does not ‘recognize’ female masons as Brothers within their Constitution. What this means, is that a woman may not enter any male lodge and be privy to their ritual, and the same applies vice versa.

It is a general sentiment amongst Lady Masons of being content with the way the status quo as has existed since 1908 when the Order was first established.

My dream is to one day be considered ‘equals’ with our male counterparts, who should recognize that although we do not attend the same ‘school’ we are nevertheless working from the same curriculum. No one has ever questioned my A grade in History GCSE as being any different to any male qualification of the same calibre. The same should apply to Masonry – in that if one has studied the Craft (first 3 degrees) and then progressed into other Orders through hard work and perseverance, then that should be enough for males to consider females as their equals.

I totally agree that we should have our own denominations, however it would be mutually beneficial if we get to share in learning about the secrets of the universe, so to speak. By secrets, I mean in a philosophical context. Subject matters that interested great minds of the past, or as Sir Isaac Newton described: “To myself, I am only a child playing on the beach, while vast oceans of truth lie undiscovered before me.”

Being a female that has worked within a military environment over the past 4 years, and the fact that women have only been ‘recognized’ in the armed forces for 10 years or so, has highlighted a social necessity in increasing women’s rights that are far more in alignment with 21st century social principles of equality and diversity. It is easily forgotten that during WWII, women were instrumental in keeping the nation functioning and manufacturing vital necessities, including HRH Queen Elizabeth II, who served as a Mechanic with Women’s Auxiliary Territorial Service. And yet, only 10 years ago were women allowed to officially join the Army. So perhaps we may see positive progress in the future with regard to Lady Masons on the Square, as more understanding and awareness develops of who we are.”

Of course I pushed her on ‘’the secrets of the universe?’’

“I think that’s all subjective to the individual. Masonry is one of those tools that can help the individual find out what they’re supposed to know. So it won’t tell you what you need to know, it will tell you where to look, and it’s up to the individual to go on that quest for further knowledge. Say for example, I was instructed to learn more about science, so I began studying and found out some astonishing facts about life in general, which I had no idea existed before research.”

Masonry is often seen as quite exclusive, but this lady mason reassured us this has changed: “I would say that ultimately there have been social reasons or social implications which have meant that people have had to keep it secret; so therefore a friend would recommend a friend, you wouldn’t just knock on the door and say “hey I want to join up”, because the members of the Order wouldn’t know if the candidate was a trustworthy person. I think nowadays, there’s no longer a desire or a real need for this whole secrecy, mainly due to changes in public opinion and a greater awareness and understanding of the principles (Brotherhood, Charity and Truth) from information available on the Internet.

If someone wants to join masonry, there is a requirement that the candidate believes in a Supreme Being. The individual can be from any religion, but would accept that there is a divine force that ultimately created the Universe. So a Christian would have the Bible present during their rituals, a Muslim the Qur’an, Bhagavad-Gita for a Hindu and so forth.

Most Masonic orders are seeking to find new ‘Masons’ rather than new ‘Members’. Quality takes precedence over Quantity. That means that after research and learning about what Freemasonry is all about, the ideal candidate desires to work hard at the Craft and become the best they can be.”

Lady mason was quick to put a stop to insinuations that being a Mason helps you get on leaps and bounds in life:

‘’Well, there are all these speculative notions that masonry offers you jobs whilst networking and this kind of thing, but that’s a complete fallacy. If you went to Public school, compared to a state school, and that was on your CV you’re more likely to be successful, right? According to society’s general stereotype. Or if the interviewing panel happen to be a member of one’s local Golf club, that may work in their favour in getting a new job? I think many people have this old school vision of masonry being like that; it’s not like that at all. In fact it is quite expensive for many Masons who have limited income or live on incapacity benefits / pensions – to pay lodge fees and buy necessary regalia. I’m sure those individuals would be keen to hear about the ‘lucrative’ prospects Masonry has to offer, of which have never been heard of by the majority of Brothers.”

Unsurprisingly, it seems that females fight for equality and diversity in the freemason world too…’’The United Grand Lodge of England, although it doesn’t officially recognize the Order of Women’s Freemasons, many of the higher members and superior officers acknowledge us. So they will talk to us about certain things, they might not discuss ritual and they won’t usually respond with the handgrip because they don’t acknowledge us as a ‘Brother’ basically. But hopefully in time, the chaps will come to see that the women are operating from pretty much the same workings, that we are doing the same things. A substantial number of Lady Mason’s in my Order are above and beyond many of the younger UGLE mason’s I encounter, in terms of the Orders they have joined and their Masonic rank. So hopefully we can teach them a thing or two in the future, and vice versa!

“I am very proud to be a Lady Mason. Albert Einstein conveyed my sentiments exactly with his quote: ‘One cannot help but be in awe when one contemplates the mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvellous structures of reality.’ ”

The chat with this lady mason had my head spinning. So many questions with PR friendly answers. However I didn’t have time to dwell on that as the pre-ball banquet was beginning with a special toast to Her Majesty The Queen in celebration of the 60th anniversary of her Coronation. On the menu were no human organs or sacrifices. Instead we were treated to regular foodstuff like smoked salmon, oven braised lamb shank and classic hot chocolate fondants with ice cream.

Post dinner we were invited to adjourn to either the grounds to take in the lawns and cannons, the grand ballroom with the Oxford Uni band directing us in some traditional Irish Rockall Ceilidh dancing, or for a freshly rolled cigar and shot of Remi Cognac in the outside Davidoff Cigar Marquee, where members of the SOAS Cuban big band were leading a Mariachi sing-along to ‘’I love rock & roll’’ whilst the public school boys got stuck right in.

Throughout the night there was also a silent disco as well as a silent auction. At this point the irony of the phrase alluded to with sinister goings on ‘’things being done in silence’’ didn’t escape me. The auction had numerous things you could bid for including artwork by Tracy Emin and Matisse, experiences at Monaco Grand Prix, the US Masters, dinner at Highgrove House, the Ryder Cup, Wimbledon, Maldives and racing around the Nurburgring.

It was a truly wonderful night that assumed would show me how the other half live, but actually the attendees were more diverse than I had assumed they would be. Fascinating to observe their easy interaction with each other and welcoming to newcomers. The ladies were gorgeous and beautiful in a very strong natural way with no sign of the insecure trappings of your average woman at the usual functions I’m used to attending. There was not one plastic surgery, hair extension, fake boob, fake eyelashes or other elements of insecurity amongst them. I guess most don’t have anything to prove to their peers. Also, I noticed that as a unified group the majority of Freemasons were unnaturally tall, strong looking glamazon types.

MASON ENTRY

The same week I visited the Freemasons Hall in the heart of Covent Garden where freemasons Daryn K. Hufton-Rees (Daryn Hufton-Rees, a second degree mason, who has been a mason for a very short period of time), alongside his colleagues Mike and Alistair, spoke to me about the history, diversity and traditions about Freemasons and encouraging anyone and everyone to attend.

They wanted to encourage inclusivity and put to bed myths and conspiracy theories about their organization. They repeated the fact that any of the public could visit Freemasons hall, informed me that brand like Amazon and Aston martin amongst other big brands hold parties in their venue for corporate functions. In fact, not too long ago the band Travis was performing on the grand masters sacred stage area. They clearly don’t take themselves that seriously.

Daryn told us that i membership numbers there are 197,000 UK craft masons, 6912 UK lodges. These figures include London ( met) craft masons 34,000
and London ( Met) lodges 1335.
Here’s our full conversation with Daryn, which I feel its better to show you transcribed fully so that I am not including opinions or taking his words out of context;

DARYN HUFTON-REES INTERVIEW

Freemasonry is a fraternal organisation for my section, there is a female groups of freemasons and also a mixed sex group of freemasons. Freemasonry means different things for different people, for me personally I have a dining club, we get together on a regular basis, four times a year, we have our lodge meeting which is the element of freemasonry, where we discuss what we’re going to be doing with the lodge, how we’re going to progress ourselves, then we go off and have something to eat and chat, this is a normal everyday meal with a group of friends, I choose to be a freemason specifically because of the comradely and there are some element of charitable work that I do and which the rest of freemasonry do that I applaud.

This building is open to anybody, we have a museum that people can see, we have guided tours that take place two or three times a day, very open. We also use it for promotions of films, we use it for film sets, the front door, you will see in a moment, is the front door Spooks uses in the BBC television programme. So that’s its non-masonic function, its masonic function is as the administrative hub of the lodges of England. We have a number of ceremonies here, where we use the lodge temple but we have a number of lodge rooms around the building, which separate lodges can actually utilize if they don’t have a place to call their own.

The ceremonies are little playlets that we do within our little group sot demonstrate principle of life, principle of movement within life. The specifics are available for anyone to see, you can actually go down to the shop and buy a book, which I have at home which lists what I’ve got to say, what the repeats are etc. You can see a lot of stuff on the internet, I personally would not want to give you the information because I feel it would spoil it for you. When I first became a freemason, less than a year ago, I could have taken all the surprise out of the experience but I chose not to and I’m very glad I didn’t.

Can you tell us a bit about the oath?
This is a misnomer. There are no oaths as such, you are asked a certain number of questions whether or nor you feel you’re suitable to be a freemason, whether or not you’re a decent chap or chapess, if there’s anyone within the lodge who would rather you weren’t a member of that lodge, which is where black balling comes from, so there are lots of little bits but there are no so called oaths, we don’t swear allegiance to some goat god, we’re not going to try and take over the world. To be honest, it’s difficult enough trying to run this place, running the world at the same time would be virtually impossible.

I’m a member of a committee in London for another area that I look at and one of the chaps who was on the committee, I found out he was a freemason, I’ve often wondered about them so I had a chat with him about it and asked whether I could be considered to join his lodge, I was lucky enough to be able to join, this was about 12 months ago.

This is the grand temple of freemasonry, it’s used very regularly for lots of different ceremonies, installing people into new positions within freemasonry, I’ve only ever been here as a guest, of a couple of friends of mine, who’ve been lucky enough to be moved through. I find the room quite staggering even now, I’ve been here a few times and as you can see, it is amazing. There are people who could tell you far more about the building than I can, one thing I can tell you is that star above you, which is part of the air conditioning system, when it’s brought down actually touches the two sets of chairs, that’s how wide it is.

Craft freemasonry, we is the freemasonry I’m in, is just three degrees; you start of as an entered apprentice. This mimics the levels of a real mason working hundreds of years ago on schools or universities. This is another reason why we have the thing about the secret handshake, the secret words and the other bits, well if you think years and years ago, when people couldn’t read or write particularly well, if you were an incredibly skilled person moving from one side of the country to the other, the person on the other side, wouldn’t know the truth in what you were saying, that you could cut stone to a certain extent, that you were able to move stone in a certain why. So different words were given to each other, different levels of handshake, different signals were used. These have sort of been absorbed into freemasonry, and we use them to show are other brothers where we are on the ladder
MASON STAR CEILING
THE STUNNING STAR CEILING AT FREEMASON HALL.
MASON CEIILING

If nothing is a secret, show us the secret Handshakes?
No, again you may happily go on the internet to see them, you can find them in many places, in the same way I decided to join the club, part of the idea of the club, even though it’s rather childish almost, is that it is a club with secrets. So if you were at university at a dining club or a seven year old with a den, you may have a secret knock to be allowed in, we like to keep that sort of tradition going. It’s an open secret, but it’s a secret I’d prefer not to give out.

You can come from any walk of life, you come from any education background, the things we’re not allowed to talk about in the lodge are politics, money and business, so they idea that we in someway scratch each other backs and move forward is absolute nonsense. Yes, the lodge that I am in is a male only lodge, however there are female lodges, there are mixed sex lodges, the myth is perpetrated that was are an exclusive club of middle aged chaps, predominantly we are middle aged chaps to be honest, but we’re not that exclusive.

If you go to out website, you can actually ask to become a mason there and we’ll point you in the right direction. An idea of inclusiveness, we have a university of lodges ball taking place on the 23rd of November and we are inviting anybody and everybody to come and enjoy the evening, again I find the argument that in some way an ageist, sexist or racist person really quite annoying, it’s not true, I really am not, and I would like as many people as possible to join the masons.

What are the masons doing to try and encourage diversity?
This is where we come to a slight stumbling back because the thing with the masons is we don’t push ourselves down anybody’s throats, we don’t holla about our charitable work, we don’t run around saying look, I’m a mason, although on occasion did we go out in public in aprons, which should give you a clue. But, we would like people to approach us about joining. So the idea that we are a proactive organization hunting down new masons, is something that I would have thought is quite abhorrent. However, we make it very very easy, if you wish to be a mason, to join. The internet is out there with lots of information which is totally wrong. If you want to find out a little bit more of the truth, if you like, then use the UGLE website.

So why don’t you allow women into this lodge and how can they get involved?
You’re probably going to ask me something regarding the break up and how we…the different ethnicities, different sexes we have. This building is predominantly built around craft freemasonry, which is a male freemasonry. When we speak to Mike a little later, he’ll be able to speak about the other buildings around the area, which have other types of freemasonry in them, including one which is all female and a mix sexed one. The idea of spread of ethnicity, if you see any evening where there are group of masons, you will see every creed or colour. I’m not going to say there are not some exclusively specific lodges, there are, I know of a lodge where everyone has to be blind to join. You can go ask a guest, if you’re not blind but everyone in the lodge is blind. That is the only lodge that has a level of exclusivity to that level that I know of.

Are there any lodges where race is a factor?
Absolutely not, there are no lodges where race has anything to do with freemasonry, before it became politically correct to have a group of people joining of you from all over, somebody from here, somebody from there and somebody from somewhere else, freemasons have taken everybody all the time anyway, we haven’t had to change because there was no need. Not because we’re arrogant but because we got it right in the first place.

Why do you choose to have gender specific lodges?
Gender specific lodges; have come about because freemasonry was originally a male only club. It was male only because of it’s history, there were very few, if any, women who were masons, as in stone masons, in the time of the 16th and 17th century.

After attending both the ball and building, I still have many questions so will continue to explore them.
While many Freemasons are active in politics and society, the fraternity does not control the government as far as we know. I concluded by what I was told, that Freemasonry is a very loose collection of fraternal societies, devoted to the common goal, of helping its members better themselves morally and spiritually. Ritual dramas, like archaic plays laden with allegorical symbols, illustrate the society’s principles for its members. The only requirements for membership are that you are adult, choose to enter freely, and believe in a higher power of some sort – after all, there’s not much point seeking spiritual betterment if you don’t believe in a spiritual dimension to the world.

There are lots of Masonic groups. Some are male only, some are female only, and some are mixed sex. There are undoubtedly rich and powerful Masons — as there are poor and disenfranchised ones. Rich and powerful people have competing interests and intentions; occasionally they work together or against each other. Freemasons, in general, tend to be pretty pleasant, both to each other and to everyone else, but they’re no better at collusion and conspiracy than, say, book of the month clubs. The press team told me that actually, Masonic law strictly forbids members from indulging in any favouritism, nepotism or cronyism, and behind-the-scenes dealing can get Masons thrown out.
MASON TRIBUTE
TRIBUTE AREA TO PAST MASONS AT FREEMASONS HALL.

The hilarious thing is also its not especially secret, either. Lodges tend to be listed in phone books, and have dedicated web pages. Members are welcome to tell other people of their affiliation. After attending their functions it seems to me that The only secret Freemasonry still has is the ways Masons can recognise each other – everything else, including detailed ritual scripts is freely available – and those are all easy to find on the web.
Like most of life’s secrets, there are multiple layers and corridors the majority don’t get to go down, but if you look at this link below where Freemasons openly debate, it’s clear they too are fed up of the rumours circulating about their group.

Mercedes-Benz links Freemasonry with Satanism in Super Bowl Ad

The Ghostwoods site concludes that masonry is ‘’ It is a cooperative effort to improve the world, by taking responsibility for yourself and the world around you, and working alongside like-minded people to make things a little better’’. My searchings’ so far conclude that this certainly seems to be the top line. A DESIGNER CHRISTMAS!

INVITE

My Christmas started with an Italian themed Christmas tree designed by Dolce& Gabana at Claridges Hotel. Claridges is by far the best hotel in London and one of my all time favorites. The service and manners guests are treated with are second to none. Whether you’re a regular Joe like me or a wealthy Arabian princess I’ve observed all guests are treated with equal grace and a smile. The concierge, who always recharges my phone wit his bank of chargers behind his desk, makes you feel like he is honored to charge your phone. It also helps that they’re based in an area of central London where it’s easy to park.

On pulling up outside the door, I noted that the banks of paparazzi were already gathered and clicking away at VIP guests entering. First came the leggy, willowy lovely Laura Bailey in her red coat and flowing ponytail. Then we had a bevvy of lovely ladies from Pixie Lott to Poppy Delevigne and the ultimate diva-Joan Collins! (It took all my will power not to jump up and down in mutual diva envy when I spotted Joan and recalled my early Dynasty viewing days).

Designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana created a special Christmas tree for the Claridge’s Hotel in order to bring the warmth and traditions of Italy to London. The Claridge’s Christmas tree has long been a festive landmark, drawing visitors from around the world to marvel at its magnificent design and for the 2013 Christmas tree the other guests that attended and enjoyed the event were: our host- Stefano Gabbana (who reminisced with me about our many MTV filming adventures and staying at his home in Sardinia to film his MTV Cribs show),

Stefano told me that ‘

’the seven metre-high Christmas tree represents iconic traditional, Sicilian elements drawn from the designers heritage land of Sicily’’. He added that ‘’more than 450 festive Italian baubles that have been hand painted with images of the Sun, Citrus groves, Almond blossom and prickly pears to recreate the idea of a Sicilian Garden. At the base of the tree there are 30 hand crafted Sicilian Pupi made to resemble the Charlemagne and other Medieval Knights. The Pupi have been carved out of wood and dressed in velvet robes, Green, Red, Yellow and Blue the colours that have always been associated with Italian festivities’’.

The grand staircase led to the balcony area where we were served the most festive food menu of delicacies I can ever recall experiencing. Fois gras mince pies, festive mincemeat macaroons, white chocolate truffle snowmen and mini edible Christmas trees were all offered by waiters from festive Christmas gift boxes. The champagne flowed all evening as I caught up with Eve and other journalists from the fashion and bourgeois worlds. Male supermodel David Gandy was such a gent and afforded his time to all clearly trying to get just a few seconds with him.

JASMINES JUICE featuring Women In Media, R&B Superstars- The Showtour and UK Youth Parliament.

Women in Media.
wim

A very elite set of leading women, from the world of UK media gathered at the grand stationers hall in St Pauls this week, to debate the experience of ‘WOMEN IN MEDIA’. In association with Huffington Post and the London Evening Standard, leading figures from TV, print and online addressed the role of women in media. After the obligatory glass of wine and female laughter filled reception, around 300 women were seated in anticipation to hear 5 very accomplished panellists speak. Anne McElvoy, very slickly chaired a top-level panel, featuring London Evening Standard editor Sarah Sands, Huffington Post UK editor-in-chief Carla Buzasi, Sky News presenter Kay Burley and The Independent on Sunday editor Lisa Markwell. After our brief welcome by the chairman of the London Press Club Doug Wills, it was straight into hearing the five leaders speak about their adventures, personal anecdotes and confessions.

KAY BURLEY, CARLA BUZASI, ANNE MCELVOY, LISA MARKWELL, SARAH SANDS.

London Evening Standard Editor Sarah Sands was optimistic about what its like for women in the media, coming from a brand like the Independent group, where there are 2 female editors and 1 non-white editor. Her company clearly, openly and proudly engages in diversity whilst placing the best people in top roles.
sarah sands
EVENING STANDARD EDITOR SARAH SANDS WITH JASMINE.

She pointed out that women also have a responsibility to other women in the media.

‘’When we see both sexes portrayed in the media- men are for authority, women are for decoration’’

She had us all laughing incredulously as she pointed out 3 stories in a recent copy of the Daily Mail; one about the youngest woman to lead a FTSE company, one about a female serial killer and the last…wait for it…about Fiona Fullerton not wearing any make up! Sarah added ‘’yes women in nice dresses are great for the front page of a paper and solves front-page ‘pretty girl in a skirt’ problems but is it any good for furthering the female agenda?
carla hp
HUFFINGTON POST UK EDITOR CARLA BUZASI WITH JASMINE.

Huffington Post UK Editor-in-Chief Carla Buzasi admitted that she had been lulled into a false sense of security in her early career, when working at numerous female glossy titles like Marie Claire and Cosmo, where there were mainly female bosses and editors. She admitted she was lucky to have continued her ascent, via women empowering her- like her current boss-one of the most famous women in global media-Arianna Huffington. ‘I’ve had lots of big, positive role models’’ she noted.
Carla revealed that a recent survey had shown that in 2012 only 22% of front-page by-lines were by women.

‘‘Just because we see some women at the top doesn’t mean that women are always represented fairly and I feel that responsibility as a female boss, so when we reached out for bloggers at the Huffington post, we championed female bloggers who were often more nervous about being opinionated and judged, by making a conscious effort to ensure we highlighted their bogs on our front pages’’ Carla added as an aside, I am good cos I hire super smart people to my team’’

Carla also revealed her proactive story of how she got her current job whilst she was still at Marie Claire. She had heard that the Huffington Post was going to set up in the UK, and researched and e mailed the boss Arianna, and asked for a meeting. They had a breakfast meeting at Charlotte St Hotel after which Arianna invited Carla to accompany her to a public event where Arianna announced (a surprise to Carla), that Carla was one of her new UK leaders for her brand. proof that not all females are nervous and unconfident at pushing themselves forwards.

The Independent on Sunday editor Lisa Markwell started ‘

’a problem women in media have, is men in media’’

. That really summed up the whole debate. Lisa had us all roaring when she recalled her experience at a dinner party where she had been introduced to group of people as editor of the whole newspaper and was repeatedly asked which ‘female area’’ she edited? Was it the fashion pages? Gossip page? Diary? Food? However she did give a nod to the male in her life when revealing that her own husband gave up work for 5 years to look after their young children and you could clearly hear the audible gasp of disbelief in the room as she told us all this. Lisa was still intrigued by the fact that in many industries (like politics), people were aggressively trying to tap into the female agenda, so why in media was there this huge disconnect with the needs of female readers and the feminist cause?

Sky News presenter Kay Burley was positive about how far our industry had come over the years and just how many more female role models exist now

‘’my world in media is unrecognisable now from when I began many years ago. I like to think that I am employed cos I’m a bloody good journalist, and ask the difficult questions, but when I make a mistake the national press jump on me in a way they don’t with my male peers’’ she told us a well known saying; ‘’doctors bury their mistakes, lawyers cover up their mistakes, journalists broadcast theirs!’’

Kay added to the slaying of certain print press titles, as she showed us the Daily Mirror Saturday feature this week, where alongside a picture of legendary singer Debbie Harry the headline was ‘’no doubt she’s dreaming of her youth’’. Females in media are always judged by their looks. This prompted Kay to openly highlight the fact that she herself has had a face lift, because she ‘’wanted to look as good as she could for as long as she could’’ not bacause she was a public face.
Kay also revealed that at her news brand they are making active changes after realising that one in seven of their every one of their interviewees was female. Now that number has changed to one in three after their commitment to changing that statistic, which is much healthier and diverse. (Wonder if that’s why I was on last month?)

Questions from the audience included a need to know just how much time exactly had each panellist taken off for maternity leave? what did they think about page 3 and the fact that apparently women have been proven to be bigger porn fans than men and more.

For my own selfish needs I would’ve liked to see a female of colour on the panel that was high up in the media world. Someone like Shaminder Nahal who used to edit Newsnight on the BBC and is now a senior editor at Channel 4 News. We do exist-its just we’re not seen.

Our chair Anne McElvoy wrapped the evening up nicely when she said ‘’London is the best place for women in the world, but you’ve got to sell yourself as well as your stories!’’

R&B superstars

The last Bassbuds sponsored R&B Superstars show at Wembley Arena was a great, well organised, a list line up of acts that was 6 months ago. Last weekend they threw another show-this time called ‘’The Show Tour’’ with an R&B Superstars line up that once again had the whole arena partying positively and a great evening.

ASHLEY WALTERS WTH LISA MAFFIA

In the main arena the first act I caught was my line up fave- Sisqo- this guy NEVER does a bad show. He’s always got the vocals and dance routines down to a t and is genuinely the male version of Beyonce but ahead of his time. 3 backing dancers-all track suited from head to toe in red, who accompanied him. Their dance routines and energy was dynamic and had the crowd on their feet throughout as the dragon slayed his performance easily. He really does make it all look so easy singing and dancing with 100% given to both art forms. VOICE Editor Dionne Grant and myself were screaming like a pair of teenagers.

Mario, J Holiday and Dave Hollister all put in good sets but with a minimum of hits between them the energy wasn’t as high as Sisqos levels but their vocals were still very on point. Donell Jones was dressed head to toe in D&G and had the crowd jumping as he sweat hard through his smoother than cocoa butter set.

GINUWINE AT THE SHOW TOUR BACKSTAGE.

Ginuwine really did pull out all the stops in his white outfit and had us all dancing non stop too. He –for once- had his shade stunners off so we could see his eyes. He got all old skool by grinding the poor stage and then ran a mini marathon around the arena where he serenaded the audience for all he as worth.

MARIO STRIKES A POSE AT THE SHOW TOUR BACKSTAGE.

Kelly Price (who was once Mariah’s backing singer), had vocals that were as strong as an ox. She took her set to church and back again, before the headliner act of the night- Ms Faith Evans smacked the final goal into the back of the net by crooning through her classic hits for a very souled out audience. Another amazing R&B Superstars line up show that brought back real singers and the genre of R&B to the stage in 2013. It did beg the question though…where are our current R&B stars of today? and are any of them British??

Youth parliament

The House of Commons. Home to scandals, broken pledges and petty squabbles between grown men who are out of touch with their community. However, times are changing. Last Friday, the green seats of the House of Commons were not filled with the predominantly white, middle-aged males that we’ve grown accustomed to seeing on television, but instead by a completely different set of people –– the Youth Parliament and my reporter for LONDON360-Iram Sarwar went to check it out.

The Youth Parliament debate, is an initiative run by the British Youth Council with the support of the Government, began in 2009 and has grown substantially in the last five years. The aim of these debates is to choose a campaign that will be the centre point of the UKYP’s manifesto for the next year. Five topics were shortlisted after a public vote in which 478,000 young people from all over the nation took part. These included: ‘Zero tolerance towards bullying in schools’, ‘Combating youth unemployment’, ‘Better work experience and careers advice,’ ‘Votes for 16 and 17 year olds in all public elections ‘‘A curriculum to prepare us for life’ and, last years and this years winning campaign ‘A curriculum to prepare us for life’.
It all looks great on paper, young people getting to debate on what matters to them, young people getting to sit in the House of Commons, young people engaging with politics, but is politics engaging with them? Does anyone (of political significance) actually listen to youth politics? Does it make any difference? As I entered the annual debate,
The Youth Parliament is, as Jamie MacLeod, the Member of Youth Parliament for Scotland (MSYP) says “an opportunity that gives young people a stepping stone to voice their concerns.” While the Youth Parliament might be largely invisible to the majority of the population, they have in just five years managed to engage almost 500,000 young people in politics with the youth elections, managed to get almost 20,000 young people to pledge public support for their campaigns and have received 159 responses from MPs about addressing the views of young people. That’s just in five years. Imagine where they’ll be in ten!

What stood out the most at the debate wad the diversity among the young MPs in age, race and gender? Around 40% of the young politicians were from non-white British backgrounds, contrasting the UK Parliament, which consists of less than 10% of ethnic minorities, and almost half the number of MYPs on the day were female, whereas the real UK Parliament is only 22% female. If this is anything to go by, politics in the UK will have a completely different face.

JASMINES JUICE featuring SOUL II SOUL VIRGIN MUSIC ANNIVERSARY, ARTEM, CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY, ONESNTWOS!

Approaching Christmas is always fun chaos and calamity in the UK and this weeks been no different. At the weekend I was on tourist guide duty as I had a niece over from the USA on her first London trip. As well as the usual hell of having to navigate the London eye and Madam Tussauds we had high tea at Dollys Basement Café in Selfridges- the best and most real and reasonably priced afternoon tea in town. Around £20 each instead of the usual £40 that Harrods and the Ritz charge!

NORDOFF ROBBINS KICK OFF

Sunday I popped to Nordoff Robbins celebrity football match at Crystal Palace where a number of famous men kicked a ball around for our entertainment. On the cold November field were Shane Ritchie, actor Danny Dyer, Former WBO, IBF, WBC and WBA Super Middleweight boxing champion Joe Calzaghe who captained one team and McFly’s Danny Jones will captain the other. They were joined by a plethora of stars including the Weasley twins from the Harry Potter films, Oliver and James Phelps, EastEnders stars Adam Woodyatt (Ian Beale), Jake Wood, (Max Branning) and David Witts (Joey Branning), plus Darren and Mike from The Overtones and Tubes and Franky Fryer from Soccer AM. They all pulled on their shorts for a great cause. Nordoff Robbins delivers music therapy to adults and children with issues like autism, dementia and more and are one of my favourite charities to support.

JASMINE AND JAZZIE- 10 YEARS AGO- NOW CELEBRATING VIRGIN MUSICS ANNIVERSARY.

Tuesday night saw me brave the streets of Camden to attend KOKO for the Soul II Soul concert to celebrate 40 years of Virgin Records. Soul II Soul are British music legends that are known worldwide, have a huge live festival fan base and one of very few UK black music acts that are known to Americans of a certain age. They most certainly would’ve helped put Virgin Music on the map years ago!

On Wednesday I spent a morning at the impressive Google HQ in London and was shown around their very futuristic, fun, playground of an office. At one point Internet inventor Vint Cerf walked past and I was genuinely gobsmacked at being in the presence of greatness.

Next I visited a quiet industrial park in Perivale, west London to see what special effects company ARTEM were up to. Artem have been quietly making huge SFX for TV and Hollywood movies for years and have an annual open day for the local community too. They showed us how they made SFX physically in a very digital world. We experienced gremlins that come alive, daleks that speak, halo characters, wind machines that swept us off our feet, 3D digital printers making feet (don’t ask), giant robots cutting and moulding movie character statues, giant animated foam heads and more! London is full of secret hidden stories of delight! Coincidently, ARTEM made loads of SFX for my next trip, which was to the theatre!
shrek

London’s West End has an abundance of musicals at the theatre, and I have in my time on earth, being a London resident since birth, experienced both of them. Most are great entertainment, a few aren’t worth their exorbitant fee, many are corny and cringe worthy as hell. This week I saw Charlie and the chocolate factory, which was everything a musical experience should be. At the world famous Drury Lane theatre, it is magical even as you approach the grand pillared building lit up with flashbulbs. The foyer sucks you straight into chocolate factory world with dressed up friendly and welcoming chocolate selling girls laden with trolleys full of Wonka bars in assorted flavours. (We bought two bars each and chomped them whilst watching)
CHARLIE_2578887b__130626032842

The interior of the theatre is as ornate and opulent as you’d expect and hope for from an old London venue and the theatre was packed full of excited adults and children anticipating the evening. We were not disappointed.
The curtain rose to reveal a beautiful 3D set that floated and slid on and offstage at intervals. There were so many sets, all stunning and breath taking.
CharlieandtheChocolateFactory_2941

From Charlie’s grandparents under the railway arches poverty struck home, to the gigantic gates of Willy Wonkas factory to the numerous sweetie making workshops- it was all a whirlwind of magic! We all know the story but its beautifully added modern tweaks with characters and music whilst retaining its original style and tone. The production was strong in all areas, from the huge panoramic sound production, to little Charlie and grandpa Joe having us empathising with their every emotion.
CharlieandtheChocolateFactory_2942

But it was the lighting projection and set graphics that created amazing illusions of travelling through whizzing elevators and through buildings that was mesmerizing. At one point a child character blew up onstage and her debris scattered all over us in the form of purple tinsel!
CharlieandtheChocolateFactory_2942

It was Award-winning physical special effects company Artem who I had visited earlier that week, who had been commissioned to provide tailor-made physical special effects for Sam Mendes’ new stage production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Working with Marcus Hall Props, the brief included devising a series of experiments for the Oompa Loompas to carry out in their laboratory, and to design and build an inflatable suit that would transform Violet Beauregarde, the gum-chewing winner of one of Willy Wonka’s golden tickets, into a giant blueberry.

The experiments needed to be visually engaging with bright colours, bubbles, and smoke, but they also had to be contained in a very small area on stage with dancing action around them.
Six different ‘laboratory’ units were built incorporating air and fluid pumps, with lots of tubing and crazily-shaped containers with bubbles floating from one and smoke rising gently from others to replicate the effects of the Oompa Loompas wacky sweet manufacturing experiments.
The inflatable suit was more complicated to create, as it had to fit each of the child actors playing the part of Violet Beauregarde and be self-contained under their outer costumes. It also had to be simple enough for the child actor to operate as well as being safe.
Laura Sindall, an Artem technician, created a couple of alternative designs that were trialed to get the best look. The air supply had to be tiny in order to be hidden, but at the same time had to be capable of ensuring full inflation of the suit. It was decided that diving components with their safety margins and long reliability record provided the ideal solution. Additional safety controls and the use of switching by the child meant the pneumatics could be contained in a small backpack the actor is wearing. Other safety valves ensured the suit could not over inflate and squash the child!

Mike Kelt, CEO of Artem, told us: “It was very amusing when the prototype was first tried out, satisfying for the production and, of course, great fun for the child! The challenge when working on such an iconic childhood favourite is to create something recognisable but at the same time innovative.”
flying lift

I go to the theatre to see shows very regularly and can honestly say this was a magical evening. We were all in awe, the whole audience was buzzing and the visuals effects, sets and sound production was awesome! We were gasping in delight every few minutes- (when we weren’t stuffing our mouths with copious amounts of Wonka bars that we had bought LOL!). It really is a musical on another standard level compared to many west end musicals today. I felt like a child again the visuals that stayed with me were so strong…Willy Wonka and Charlie actually floated in an elevator above my head! The show is booking until November 2014, and it’s suitable for all ages so If you are planning a trip to the theatre with children, as a couple or with tourists I suggest this as the one stop you make an effort to make!

ONESNTWOS ONLINE TV SITCOM

I finished my week by attending an invite only screening for a new online TV show called Ones n Twos which is written by a lady I’ve seen grow and develop in this entertainment industry- Annika Allen and her co writers Ben Peters and Marc Senior. Ones n twos is a modern day sitcom in the same style and tone as well loved TV series like desmonds and the real McCoy.
Actors poster final

The show was released online last week on 14th NOVEMBER 2013. Starring names and faces that you already know and love aswell as new comers like Danny ‘Slim’ Gray, Kat B, Mighty Moe, Axel Comedian, Linden Walcott-Burton Leonie Elliot, Paris Robin, Lenéa Herew, Ava Charles, Monique Fontaine, Michael Moulton, Johnathan Ukeuku and Wakjira Feyesa. Ones n Twos is a unique online comedy series that follows the lives of an eclectic bunch of DJs that broadcast live on pirate radio station OnesNTwos FM – the biggest little station in London. In each episode the DJs broadcast from the stations custom built studio in the station manager’s girlfriends flat. With clashing personalities, secret crushes and power struggles life is never simple for the team at OnesnTwos FM. This series takes the classic sitcom format placing it online for a great mix of humour, drama, comedy and entertainment.
annika
ANNIKA ALLEN, ANGIE LE MAR AND JASMINE.

Annika sat down with me to tell me about how the idea was born ‘We felt that there wasn’t a show on TV that we could relate too or represented black culture in a fun way without focusing on drugs, guns or violence. One half of our directing team Ben Peters came up with the initial concept. He spoke to the other Director Marc Senior about being involved and me to produce it and we kick started the project from there. Coming up with character outlines and a story arc etc.’’. She continued ‘‘we all come from an era where we remember our parents watching Desmonds and we loved The Real McCoy and The Fresh Prince of Belair. We wanted the show to have the comedy elements of these shoes and also a nostalgic feel for that time. Plus we’re all big music lovers. Ben has directed music videos for the likes of Wiley and Example and used to DJ. As a journalist and magazine owner I’ve interviewed some of the biggest music artists and we all have a favourite pirate radio station so we felt this wasn’t an area that had been tackled and it was something we could all relate to’’.
Like most new start up projects Annika explained the hustle that brought the team together ‘’I’ve known Ben for over 10 years and Ben introduced me to Marc. I think individually we all have different skills that we brought to the project that produced great results. For the wider team we pulled in favours and used our network to come on board. each episode is 10 minutes long and will run over 12 weeks every Thursday at 7pm on our YouTube channel @OnesNTwosTV.

Annika also told us it’s a new rules world as Jay Z said ‘’We wanted to create a show that was exactly how we wanted it to be without any outside influences. Plus if we waited on traditional funding or a commission we could still be waiting now. So we decided to do it ourselves in the hope that we can re edit the format to 6 x 30 min episodes for a TX on TV. With Felix Dexter passing, ChoiceFM no more and people from BAME backgrounds leaving the creative industries in their droves, we feel its a good time for a series like this to leave its mark. It features 3 of the best UK comedians, a catchy theme tune by Mighty Moe from the Heartless Crew, who plays Niceness in the series along with an amazing cast of aspiring actors who find it difficult to secure roles and had a great time starring in this series’’.

You can watch the show here on YouTube @OnesNTwosTV …http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kOZ8XGyilMA

With new local London TV station LONDON LIVE starting to broadcast in April next year commissioning young black actor/producer Samuel Benta’s show ‘’all about the McKenzie’s’’, the time to make your mark by going it alone via the internet has never been greater!

JASMINE’S JUICE featuring SKY NEWS, NUTCRACKER ON ICE, BUSTA, RED AND METH, MANDELA THE MOVIE, R&B SUPERSTARS AT WEMBLEY!

Jasmine Sky News 3
JASMINE ON SKY NEWS.

SKY NEWS

Got to love the last.min.com way of the media industry. I got a call on my day off my from a producer at Sky News- who asked if id be willing to come in a talk about that evenings Mercury Music Prize. I jumped in a cab an hour later to go chat to news anchor Dermot Murnaghan about it. The Mercury Prize is one of the most respected music awards in the UK. Unlike many others it doesn’t leave the music industry scoffing. It is diverse and represents all ages, classes, genres, sexes and styles of music. You can be as old as David Bowie this year-66, or as young as Laura Marling -23. Annually a variety of music genres are shortlisted for the prize and it’s always had a healthy sprinkling of urban acts from Dizzee Rascal, Ms Dynamite and Speech Debelle. When Dizzee and Dynamite won it we understood, when speech won both peeps from inside and outside the urban music genre were left scratching their chins. Not cos she’s not good- but it just wasn’t her time. Like a dinner with all the right ingredients she just hadn’t cooked through enough and wasn’t ready to receive such an accolade. After all eyes were on her she had nowhere left to go.
Jasmine Sky News 4

This year, as usual there wasn’t anything controversial critics could criticise about the category so some said the shortlist was too mainstream. This was laughable. Many in the music industry may have heard of the acts but outside of it barely any knew the whole list. My taxi driver en route had heard of 4 out of the 12. (Also, the prize has for the past 22 years been £20,000. Surely considering inflation and time this should be higher in 2013?) Actually it’s not even the first place spot that counts. Others on the list can make this money up merely by being nominated. in the year that Plan B was nominated he sold an extra 43,000 copies of his album, and this year Laura Mvulas manager told me since her nomination her album sales had gone up 500%! So it’s a well-respected award shortlist that artists and their teams love. Music teams are given a nod of acknowledgement that all their hard work isn’t going unnoticed, and the artist winner or not, gets to call themselves a mercury artist for ever. A great deal. We had a good chat about it on air and all was well. But there’s always one thing that goes wrong isn’t there? This time it wasn’t me. Dermot’s Autocue clearly said ‘’Jasmine Dotiwala’’ and of course he said ‘’Yasmin’’- twice!. Good to know even the really big pro’s make errors too.

NUTCRACKER ON ICE.

I visited the London Palladium to see the Nutcracker On Ice. This is a ballet that I took part in annually at my ballet school, and is the most fun, easy ballet story to follow so I took my other half too. He’s always been a theatre fan but I’ve never really been able to excite him with ballet. ‘’I don’t need to see dudes in tights babe’’.
nc
This story of a young girl called Clara and her families Christmas party is mesmerising at the best of times. Drosselmeyer, a local councilman, magician, and Clara’s godfather brings a gift of a nutcracker for Clara. As the clock strikes midnight and the party draws to a close, Clara falls asleep and the nutcracker gift appears as a real life size person in her dream that carries her to far lands of different ethnicities (Russian, Arabic, Chinese, Spanish) and worlds of magical sweet kingdoms. In point shoes and tutus’ this is a visual spectacle but on ice its even more magical and dreamlike with its floating, soaring skaters who interpreted the story beautifully.

The poster advertising nutcracker on ice features old stage and TV stalwart Keith Chegwin but don’t let that put you off, he’s barely in it. Instead try your utmost to get to one of its nationwide tour dates if you can. The show plays Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff from Fri 8 – Sun 17 November and the Mayflower Theatre, Southampton from Tue 19 – Sat 23 November. You wont regret it.

REDMAN AND METHODMAN AT HAMMERSMITH APOLLO- PIC Paul Hampartsoumian

The superstars of hip-hop show at Hammersmith Apollo, was a hotly anticipated gig that didn’t disappoint and luckily my music world connect Hakeem Stevens (CHOICEFM/ VP RECORDS/ USM MEDIA GROUP/ LOADS OF MUSIC LABELS LOL!), hooked a girl up with some last minute tickets. On arrival there was an ever growing, Heaving crowd outside with both tickets and guest list queue massive. Inside eve before the main show the venue was three quarters full already. The first thing I saw was Birmingham’s Lady Leshur who was mid set and had a great audience rapport and response. When you think that back in the day when Busta and peers used to first come and performing the UK, the UK warm up acts usually performed to a tiny crowd who didn’t much care about them this is a great progression. The crowd were positively jumping and cheering for Lady Leshur.

RED METH
JASMINE WITH REDMAN AND METHODMAN MID INTERVIEW IN THE OLD DAYS- THERE WERE 2 MASSIVE SPLIFFS BEHIND THIS SOFA THAT SHOWED UP WHEN THE CAMERA WASNT ROLLING!

Next Radio1Xtras DJ Ace warmed up the crowd nicely before Red and Meth came on. This was interesting, as I had wondered which act would headline. Busta is good but Red and Meth have a crazy funny magic performing together. Red and meth have had so many years performing together their stage set is tight and slick. They even had hype dance moves and unison routines.

JAS METH RED 3
JASMINE WITH RED AND METH IN THE OLD DAYS

Both big, tall and bounding across the stage together with dynamic energy, they had themselves and the crowd high from the moment they stepped onstage until their last bow. Their lyrical flow was as strong with clarity as if we were listening to their records, their passion and charisma talking and involving the crowd in a natural manner was slick and authentic. it made me acknowledge that acts that are half their age don’t have their stage experience or crowd reaction. They deserve a full 10/10 for their set….but…they did mess up timing for the whole show by turning up at the venue at 830 when they were due to be on stage and didn’t make their way straight on stage until 9.20 putting everything behind schedule so the UK acts had to fill in. They were drinking and smoking weed (nothing new there) and Busta was in the venue at 8.50pm as he wanted to see Red and Meth’s set and half way through came down to watch it from the side of the stage.

Busta, Meth & Redman
BUSTA RHYMES AT HAMMERSMITH APOLLO- PIC Paul Hampartsoumian

Everyone knows the venue time curfew is 11pm but by 10.20pm Busta still hadn’t appeared nor was there any sign of him due to Red and Meth’s antics. I know from past experience that Busta can put on a really, tight, slick live set with his cohort Spilff Star and it runs a good hour. (Yes, sad what I pick up over the years following acts around on tour making TV specials about them)So it was a domino effect and Busta Rhymes was late onstage, seemingly unrehearsed and without his usual sidekick Spliff Star, the set was flatter than should be and lacked the usual tight rehearsed lines and intro into each song.

He performed all of his hits and did a 50 minute set in the end. If he had to rush through stuff, the blame lies with Red and Meth who were (apparently) unprofessional from the time they came off the plane.

My own personal gripe was that half way through his set he spent a 10 good minutes of his set paying tribute to legendary hip-hop producer J Dilla and then told the audience’ ‘if you don’t know who f#*@ J Dilla is then go and do your f&*^^%& homework!!!’’. Now I have no time for music snobs. I found this rant totally offensive rude and unnecessary. Did he ever think that these younger or more uninformed hip-hop fans all come to love hip-hop via a different path? We all access our love for art via a million different routes. Some people are deep fans that know an artists back catalogue inside out, others come to music via their hobbies of dance, friends, radio and more. Having spoken to many of my live show promoter mates I know that these more ‘’uninformed fans’’ are the ones that attend gigs loyally and pay for their tickets unlike a lot of hip-hop heads (like me) who often probably came to gigs via the guest list and promoter comps. The fans Busta was dissing very likely actually paid full price for their tickets. These fans are lining your pockets and keeping your bills paid. How about educing them with ‘’if you don’t know who J Dilla is he was a very ground breaking, prominent respected music producer and I’d urge you to go check him out’’

Music snobs get short thrift from me. Who are you to judge what makes a better, bigger hip-hop fan? Why should an older, wiser more informed fan make others feel awkward because they don’t know who J Dilla is? How about nicely educating them instead of alienating? It’s like music snobs that get pissed off when new fans stand at the front of a rappers show citing’’ I was a fan before them, they don’t know what hip-hop is, how dare they stand at the front!’’ WTF? We spent years trying to make our genre of music big and commercial and now that it is you wanna bite the hand that feeds you for not knowing enough? As an American would say- sheesh!
Busta finished by rolling fast through a few hits but i think we all knew it was a fast fix rescue set (blame it on the high duo) as opposed to his usual awesome set.

JASMINE WITH OLD MATE IDRIS ELBA.

MANDELA- A LONG WALK TO FREEDOM MOVIE

Finally I attended a special screening of the new Mandela movie- a long walk to freedom. An amazingly powerful screen story about the great man, played by our very own Idris Elba, who in my humble opinion did a brilliant job. Idris South African accent is most certainly better than his American accent. He spent 5 hours a day in face make up to transform his face shape and appearance to become Madeba and looked the part. Its only when you see close ups of Idris eyes that you can see the power of his individual brand. His co star Naomi Harris who played his wife Winnie Mandela was as powerful and had us empathising with her every step of her own personal journey too. Both of their intertwined stories against the backdrop of apartheid in South Africa had the audience in tears and sobs were heard throughout the film. I personally found the story of Mandela’s close ANC comrades most fascinating. Amongst the tight male group of 5 was an African Asian man who did time with Nelson and fought alongside the black struggle. It made me realise that we brown and black skinned brothers and sisters have been closely knit throughout history. The film is out in the UK in January and it’s an all time classic. Surely Idris and Naomi will both get Oscars for this!

R&B SUPERSTARS COMING TO WEMBLEY ARENA NOVEMBER 16TH 2013!

Now time to prepare for the biggest R&B show this side of Christmas! The superstars of R&B Wembley Arena show featuring Faith Evans, Sisqo, Donnel Jones, Mario, Dave Hollister, Kelly Price, Bobby V, J Holiday, Ginuwine, Adina Howard and Chico Debarge. The last one was a great day out for the whole family, well organised and well worth it.
I jumped on the phone quickly with some of the acts. Sisqo told me: “last time Jas I came with my Dru Hill family, but this time its the solo stuff, it’s the stuff you wanted to see, Know you can never ever expect what the Dragons gonna do.” Faith Evans gushed in that sultry velvet like voice: “I’m gonna be putting down some good old skool R&B, make sure you’re in the house.”
J. Holiday added: “This a show you don’t wanna miss- see you all there.” (What he said!).
