JASMINES JUICE explores at the FREEMASONS BALL and starts Christmas with D&G!

MASON INVITE

Alongside the conspiracies that the original moon landing was fake, that 9/11 was orchestrated by the USA government, and the idea that the C.I.A invented and planted the deadly AIDS virus to wipe out homosexuals and African Americans, is the age old favourite – that secret societies rule the world.

I’ve been listening to scare stories about the illuminate and Freemasons for over two decades in the music industry, and have had a vague interest and intrigue about the group. In the past I haven’t bothered to actively pursue this fascination, but in recent years on finding out that close family members have in the past been masons and a couple still currently are (but refuse to tell me anything!), I’ve been more interested in finding out more about them.

Coincidently this past the month the Freemasons put on a Ball, a white tie charity ball that revived a 150-year-old masonic social tradition. I was invited to both the ball and their building at Great Queen Street in Covent Garden to ask anything I liked and get a feel of the event so hoping to make their brand more open and inclusive to the general public.
MM VENUE
ENTRANCE TO THE BALL

The ball was as grand and opulent as expected and 1,000 guests turned up at the HAC – a very grand venue flanked in burning flames and sports cars, in the heart of Moorgate- to experience ‘’the best of English tradition, entertainment, and hospitality’’ and all money raised on the night went to two charities- Combat Stress and the Royal College of Surgeons.
MM TABLES

Hosted by the Masonic lodges of the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge, and with guests from several London lodges, the University Lodges’ Ball was open to members of the public too. Sponsors for the ball included Aerice consultancy who were headline sponsors, other sponsors included Davidoff, William Evans (guns and shooting accessories) and Fuller’s (beers).

The ballroom was filled with gentlemen in White Tie and ladies in magnificent evening dresses for what I was promised would be ‘’a night of sparkling conversation, entertainment, and dancing’’.

Whilst mingling pre-dinner and taking in the champagne reception and string quartet, all I could think of and smile about, was the fixation that my friend had e-mailed me the night before, warning me not to attend. He said

‘‘they are among us. Blood-drinking, flesh-eating, shape-shifting extra-terrestrial reptilian humanoids with only one objective in their cold-blooded little heads: to enslave the human race. They are our leaders, our corporate executives, our beloved Oscar-winning actors and Grammy-winning singers, and they’re responsible for the Holocaust, the Oklahoma City bombings and the 9/11 attacks … at least according to former BBC sports reporter David Icke, who became the poster human for the theory in 1998 after publishing his first book, The Biggest Secret, which contained interviews with two Brits who claimed members of the royal family are nothing more than reptiles with crowns. They supposedly count among their number Queen Elizabeth, George W. Bush, Henry Kissinger, Bill and Hillary Clinton and Bob Hope. Encroaching on other conspiracy theorists’ territory, Icke even claims that the lizards are behind secret societies like the Freemasons and the Illuminati’’

I put this to a few of the guests I mingled with who laughed and warned me to prepare for the drinking from skulls part of the evening post dinner. Others giggled and said the rumours were silly and that you could see by this evening that ‘’we provide more charity than any other group on the planet’’. One of my uncles is a mason and tells me that they are ‘’simply a group of men that like to unwind after a hard week at work, together over a meal, and do good work for their communities and society together’’ Some think that despite donating heaps of cash to charity, they’re secretly plotting your undoing at Masonic temples across the world.
MM DEP GM
FREEMASON DEPUTY GRAND MASTER JONATHAN SPENCE.

To me it seems like a funny, yet uber cool fixation. On one hand its as if the Masons are a bit like Boy Scouts for middle-aged men. In the 1950s, if you wanted to get on in the law, banking or politics, being a Mason was obligatory so on went the suit and the winking eye with secret handshakes they were all proud of. On the other hand imagine setting up a group or gang that is global, has the reputation of power yet so many amazingly dangerous misconceptions. A pretty secretive, strong brand that’s not even trying to sell us anything! They should consider selling mason branded golf clubs, aftershave, cigars, whiskey, shooting apparel, an airline and clothing.

Whilst they may not be trying to sell us anything, others are eager to hang onto their coat tails. This month a new nightclub has replaced the old Movida club and calls itself Mason House with all the visual hints at being associated with the fraternity, but the Freemasons I met were quick to distance themselves from it.
The ball committee told me that there were three reasons for the ball to be held aside from the historical; to have fun, to raise money for their charities and to contribute to the developing openness of freemasonry and help with the general public opinion of it.

We also spoke to a lady mason….

“I am here today as a Lady mason, so I can talk to some females who have a genuine interest in Masonry, to understand what it is about and how they can get involved.

I joined Masonry about a year ago, but it took me about a year to decide that I wanted to proceed and be initiated in the First degree. I did a lot of research beforehand, a lot of reading.”

Talking about what made her want to become a Lady Mason, she revealed:

“I was fortunate to meet some young male masons on the social circuit, who made me aware of a lecture taking place at Freemason’s Hall on the theme of Dan Brown’s book, ‘The Lost Symbol’. As I had been reading the book at the time, I was intrigued and went along to the event.

At the drinks reception afterwards, I met my future mentor, who enlightened me that his mother had been a Lady mason. He thought I would find Masonry enlightening, given I had expressed my deep interest in ancient civilizations particularly, Egypt. This was a groundbreaking piece of information, as I had been reminded many times, by male Masons that the fraternity was only for men; and that ‘gender rules’ would unlikely change in the future. My mentor had an entirely different approach, given he had joined Masonry because his mother had inspired him to do so!

Initially, I found out about co-masonry, which was conceived in France in 1882, when the first female was initiated into Freemasonry.

I was then introduced to the idea of joining an Order, specifically for women. I chose the latter for several reasons. Firstly, I attended an all girls’ school and in hindsight believe that having boys around would have been a major distraction with regard to study – the same ethos I applied to Masonry. One only needs to look at the Mosque or Synagogue and see that many places of reverence, require men and women to be separated – and this I believe is to assist the individual focus on what they are doing, saying, hearing etc.

There is also the issue that the United Grand Lodge of England, although may ‘acknowledge’ female masons in a social context, the Order does not ‘recognize’ female masons as Brothers within their Constitution. What this means, is that a woman may not enter any male lodge and be privy to their ritual, and the same applies vice versa.

It is a general sentiment amongst Lady Masons of being content with the way the status quo as has existed since 1908 when the Order was first established.

My dream is to one day be considered ‘equals’ with our male counterparts, who should recognize that although we do not attend the same ‘school’ we are nevertheless working from the same curriculum. No one has ever questioned my A grade in History GCSE as being any different to any male qualification of the same calibre. The same should apply to Masonry – in that if one has studied the Craft (first 3 degrees) and then progressed into other Orders through hard work and perseverance, then that should be enough for males to consider females as their equals.

I totally agree that we should have our own denominations, however it would be mutually beneficial if we get to share in learning about the secrets of the universe, so to speak. By secrets, I mean in a philosophical context. Subject matters that interested great minds of the past, or as Sir Isaac Newton described: “To myself, I am only a child playing on the beach, while vast oceans of truth lie undiscovered before me.”

Being a female that has worked within a military environment over the past 4 years, and the fact that women have only been ‘recognized’ in the armed forces for 10 years or so, has highlighted a social necessity in increasing women’s rights that are far more in alignment with 21st century social principles of equality and diversity. It is easily forgotten that during WWII, women were instrumental in keeping the nation functioning and manufacturing vital necessities, including HRH Queen Elizabeth II, who served as a Mechanic with Women’s Auxiliary Territorial Service. And yet, only 10 years ago were women allowed to officially join the Army. So perhaps we may see positive progress in the future with regard to Lady Masons on the Square, as more understanding and awareness develops of who we are.”

Of course I pushed her on ‘’the secrets of the universe?’’

“I think that’s all subjective to the individual. Masonry is one of those tools that can help the individual find out what they’re supposed to know. So it won’t tell you what you need to know, it will tell you where to look, and it’s up to the individual to go on that quest for further knowledge. Say for example, I was instructed to learn more about science, so I began studying and found out some astonishing facts about life in general, which I had no idea existed before research.”

Masonry is often seen as quite exclusive, but this lady mason reassured us this has changed: “I would say that ultimately there have been social reasons or social implications which have meant that people have had to keep it secret; so therefore a friend would recommend a friend, you wouldn’t just knock on the door and say “hey I want to join up”, because the members of the Order wouldn’t know if the candidate was a trustworthy person. I think nowadays, there’s no longer a desire or a real need for this whole secrecy, mainly due to changes in public opinion and a greater awareness and understanding of the principles (Brotherhood, Charity and Truth) from information available on the Internet.

If someone wants to join masonry, there is a requirement that the candidate believes in a Supreme Being. The individual can be from any religion, but would accept that there is a divine force that ultimately created the Universe. So a Christian would have the Bible present during their rituals, a Muslim the Qur’an, Bhagavad-Gita for a Hindu and so forth.

Most Masonic orders are seeking to find new ‘Masons’ rather than new ‘Members’. Quality takes precedence over Quantity. That means that after research and learning about what Freemasonry is all about, the ideal candidate desires to work hard at the Craft and become the best they can be.”

Lady mason was quick to put a stop to insinuations that being a Mason helps you get on leaps and bounds in life:

‘’Well, there are all these speculative notions that masonry offers you jobs whilst networking and this kind of thing, but that’s a complete fallacy. If you went to Public school, compared to a state school, and that was on your CV you’re more likely to be successful, right? According to society’s general stereotype. Or if the interviewing panel happen to be a member of one’s local Golf club, that may work in their favour in getting a new job? I think many people have this old school vision of masonry being like that; it’s not like that at all. In fact it is quite expensive for many Masons who have limited income or live on incapacity benefits / pensions – to pay lodge fees and buy necessary regalia. I’m sure those individuals would be keen to hear about the ‘lucrative’ prospects Masonry has to offer, of which have never been heard of by the majority of Brothers.”

Unsurprisingly, it seems that females fight for equality and diversity in the freemason world too…’’The United Grand Lodge of England, although it doesn’t officially recognize the Order of Women’s Freemasons, many of the higher members and superior officers acknowledge us. So they will talk to us about certain things, they might not discuss ritual and they won’t usually respond with the handgrip because they don’t acknowledge us as a ‘Brother’ basically. But hopefully in time, the chaps will come to see that the women are operating from pretty much the same workings, that we are doing the same things. A substantial number of Lady Mason’s in my Order are above and beyond many of the younger UGLE mason’s I encounter, in terms of the Orders they have joined and their Masonic rank. So hopefully we can teach them a thing or two in the future, and vice versa!

“I am very proud to be a Lady Mason. Albert Einstein conveyed my sentiments exactly with his quote: ‘One cannot help but be in awe when one contemplates the mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvellous structures of reality.’ ”

The chat with this lady mason had my head spinning. So many questions with PR friendly answers. However I didn’t have time to dwell on that as the pre-ball banquet was beginning with a special toast to Her Majesty The Queen in celebration of the 60th anniversary of her Coronation. On the menu were no human organs or sacrifices. Instead we were treated to regular foodstuff like smoked salmon, oven braised lamb shank and classic hot chocolate fondants with ice cream.

Post dinner we were invited to adjourn to either the grounds to take in the lawns and cannons, the grand ballroom with the Oxford Uni band directing us in some traditional Irish Rockall Ceilidh dancing, or for a freshly rolled cigar and shot of Remi Cognac in the outside Davidoff Cigar Marquee, where members of the SOAS Cuban big band were leading a Mariachi sing-along to ‘’I love rock & roll’’ whilst the public school boys got stuck right in.

Throughout the night there was also a silent disco as well as a silent auction. At this point the irony of the phrase alluded to with sinister goings on ‘’things being done in silence’’ didn’t escape me. The auction had numerous things you could bid for including artwork by Tracy Emin and Matisse, experiences at Monaco Grand Prix, the US Masters, dinner at Highgrove House, the Ryder Cup, Wimbledon, Maldives and racing around the Nurburgring.

It was a truly wonderful night that assumed would show me how the other half live, but actually the attendees were more diverse than I had assumed they would be. Fascinating to observe their easy interaction with each other and welcoming to newcomers. The ladies were gorgeous and beautiful in a very strong natural way with no sign of the insecure trappings of your average woman at the usual functions I’m used to attending. There was not one plastic surgery, hair extension, fake boob, fake eyelashes or other elements of insecurity amongst them. I guess most don’t have anything to prove to their peers. Also, I noticed that as a unified group the majority of Freemasons were unnaturally tall, strong looking glamazon types.

MASON ENTRY

The same week I visited the Freemasons Hall in the heart of Covent Garden where freemasons Daryn K. Hufton-Rees (Daryn Hufton-Rees, a second degree mason, who has been a mason for a very short period of time), alongside his colleagues Mike and Alistair, spoke to me about the history, diversity and traditions about Freemasons and encouraging anyone and everyone to attend.

They wanted to encourage inclusivity and put to bed myths and conspiracy theories about their organization. They repeated the fact that any of the public could visit Freemasons hall, informed me that brand like Amazon and Aston martin amongst other big brands hold parties in their venue for corporate functions. In fact, not too long ago the band Travis was performing on the grand masters sacred stage area. They clearly don’t take themselves that seriously.

Daryn told us that i membership numbers there are 197,000 UK craft masons, 6912 UK lodges. These figures include London ( met) craft masons 34,000
and London ( Met) lodges 1335.
Here’s our full conversation with Daryn, which I feel its better to show you transcribed fully so that I am not including opinions or taking his words out of context;

DARYN HUFTON-REES INTERVIEW

Freemasonry is a fraternal organisation for my section, there is a female groups of freemasons and also a mixed sex group of freemasons. Freemasonry means different things for different people, for me personally I have a dining club, we get together on a regular basis, four times a year, we have our lodge meeting which is the element of freemasonry, where we discuss what we’re going to be doing with the lodge, how we’re going to progress ourselves, then we go off and have something to eat and chat, this is a normal everyday meal with a group of friends, I choose to be a freemason specifically because of the comradely and there are some element of charitable work that I do and which the rest of freemasonry do that I applaud.

This building is open to anybody, we have a museum that people can see, we have guided tours that take place two or three times a day, very open. We also use it for promotions of films, we use it for film sets, the front door, you will see in a moment, is the front door Spooks uses in the BBC television programme. So that’s its non-masonic function, its masonic function is as the administrative hub of the lodges of England. We have a number of ceremonies here, where we use the lodge temple but we have a number of lodge rooms around the building, which separate lodges can actually utilize if they don’t have a place to call their own.

The ceremonies are little playlets that we do within our little group sot demonstrate principle of life, principle of movement within life. The specifics are available for anyone to see, you can actually go down to the shop and buy a book, which I have at home which lists what I’ve got to say, what the repeats are etc. You can see a lot of stuff on the internet, I personally would not want to give you the information because I feel it would spoil it for you. When I first became a freemason, less than a year ago, I could have taken all the surprise out of the experience but I chose not to and I’m very glad I didn’t.

Can you tell us a bit about the oath?
This is a misnomer. There are no oaths as such, you are asked a certain number of questions whether or nor you feel you’re suitable to be a freemason, whether or not you’re a decent chap or chapess, if there’s anyone within the lodge who would rather you weren’t a member of that lodge, which is where black balling comes from, so there are lots of little bits but there are no so called oaths, we don’t swear allegiance to some goat god, we’re not going to try and take over the world. To be honest, it’s difficult enough trying to run this place, running the world at the same time would be virtually impossible.

I’m a member of a committee in London for another area that I look at and one of the chaps who was on the committee, I found out he was a freemason, I’ve often wondered about them so I had a chat with him about it and asked whether I could be considered to join his lodge, I was lucky enough to be able to join, this was about 12 months ago.

This is the grand temple of freemasonry, it’s used very regularly for lots of different ceremonies, installing people into new positions within freemasonry, I’ve only ever been here as a guest, of a couple of friends of mine, who’ve been lucky enough to be moved through. I find the room quite staggering even now, I’ve been here a few times and as you can see, it is amazing. There are people who could tell you far more about the building than I can, one thing I can tell you is that star above you, which is part of the air conditioning system, when it’s brought down actually touches the two sets of chairs, that’s how wide it is.

Craft freemasonry, we is the freemasonry I’m in, is just three degrees; you start of as an entered apprentice. This mimics the levels of a real mason working hundreds of years ago on schools or universities. This is another reason why we have the thing about the secret handshake, the secret words and the other bits, well if you think years and years ago, when people couldn’t read or write particularly well, if you were an incredibly skilled person moving from one side of the country to the other, the person on the other side, wouldn’t know the truth in what you were saying, that you could cut stone to a certain extent, that you were able to move stone in a certain why. So different words were given to each other, different levels of handshake, different signals were used. These have sort of been absorbed into freemasonry, and we use them to show are other brothers where we are on the ladder
MASON STAR CEILING

MASON CEIILING

If nothing is a secret, show us the secret Handshakes?
No, again you may happily go on the internet to see them, you can find them in many places, in the same way I decided to join the club, part of the idea of the club, even though it’s rather childish almost, is that it is a club with secrets. So if you were at university at a dining club or a seven year old with a den, you may have a secret knock to be allowed in, we like to keep that sort of tradition going. It’s an open secret, but it’s a secret I’d prefer not to give out.

You can come from any walk of life, you come from any education background, the things we’re not allowed to talk about in the lodge are politics, money and business, so they idea that we in someway scratch each other backs and move forward is absolute nonsense. Yes, the lodge that I am in is a male only lodge, however there are female lodges, there are mixed sex lodges, the myth is perpetrated that was are an exclusive club of middle aged chaps, predominantly we are middle aged chaps to be honest, but we’re not that exclusive.

If you go to out website, you can actually ask to become a mason there and we’ll point you in the right direction. An idea of inclusiveness, we have a university of lodges ball taking place on the 23rd of November and we are inviting anybody and everybody to come and enjoy the evening, again I find the argument that in some way an ageist, sexist or racist person really quite annoying, it’s not true, I really am not, and I would like as many people as possible to join the masons.

What are the masons doing to try and encourage diversity?
This is where we come to a slight stumbling back because the thing with the masons is we don’t push ourselves down anybody’s throats, we don’t holla about our charitable work, we don’t run around saying look, I’m a mason, although on occasion did we go out in public in aprons, which should give you a clue. But, we would like people to approach us about joining. So the idea that we are a proactive organization hunting down new masons, is something that I would have thought is quite abhorrent. However, we make it very very easy, if you wish to be a mason, to join. The internet is out there with lots of information which is totally wrong. If you want to find out a little bit more of the truth, if you like, then use the UGLE website.

So why don’t you allow women into this lodge and how can they get involved?
You’re probably going to ask me something regarding the break up and how we…the different ethnicities, different sexes we have. This building is predominantly built around craft freemasonry, which is a male freemasonry. When we speak to Mike a little later, he’ll be able to speak about the other buildings around the area, which have other types of freemasonry in them, including one which is all female and a mix sexed one. The idea of spread of ethnicity, if you see any evening where there are group of masons, you will see every creed or colour. I’m not going to say there are not some exclusively specific lodges, there are, I know of a lodge where everyone has to be blind to join. You can go ask a guest, if you’re not blind but everyone in the lodge is blind. That is the only lodge that has a level of exclusivity to that level that I know of.

Are there any lodges where race is a factor?
Absolutely not, there are no lodges where race has anything to do with freemasonry, before it became politically correct to have a group of people joining of you from all over, somebody from here, somebody from there and somebody from somewhere else, freemasons have taken everybody all the time anyway, we haven’t had to change because there was no need. Not because we’re arrogant but because we got it right in the first place.

Why do you choose to have gender specific lodges?
Gender specific lodges; have come about because freemasonry was originally a male only club. It was male only because of it’s history, there were very few, if any, women who were masons, as in stone masons, in the time of the 16th and 17th century.

After attending both the ball and building, I still have many questions so will continue to explore them.
While many Freemasons are active in politics and society, the fraternity does not control the government as far as we know. I concluded by what I was told, that Freemasonry is a very loose collection of fraternal societies, devoted to the common goal, of helping its members better themselves morally and spiritually. Ritual dramas, like archaic plays laden with allegorical symbols, illustrate the society’s principles for its members. The only requirements for membership are that you are adult, choose to enter freely, and believe in a higher power of some sort – after all, there’s not much point seeking spiritual betterment if you don’t believe in a spiritual dimension to the world.

There are lots of Masonic groups. Some are male only, some are female only, and some are mixed sex. There are undoubtedly rich and powerful Masons — as there are poor and disenfranchised ones. Rich and powerful people have competing interests and intentions; occasionally they work together or against each other. Freemasons, in general, tend to be pretty pleasant, both to each other and to everyone else, but they’re no better at collusion and conspiracy than, say, book of the month clubs. The press team told me that actually, Masonic law strictly forbids members from indulging in any favouritism, nepotism or cronyism, and behind-the-scenes dealing can get Masons thrown out.
MASON TRIBUTE
TRIBUTE AREA TO PAST MASONS AT FREEMASONS HALL.

The hilarious thing is also its not especially secret, either. Lodges tend to be listed in phone books, and have dedicated web pages. Members are welcome to tell other people of their affiliation. After attending their functions it seems to me that The only secret Freemasonry still has is the ways Masons can recognise each other – everything else, including detailed ritual scripts is freely available – and those are all easy to find on the web.
Like most of life’s secrets, there are multiple layers and corridors the majority don’t get to go down, but if you look at this link below where Freemasons openly debate, it’s clear they too are fed up of the rumours circulating about their group.

Mercedes-Benz links Freemasonry with Satanism in Super Bowl Ad

The Ghostwoods site concludes that masonry is ‘’ It is a cooperative effort to improve the world, by taking responsibility for yourself and the world around you, and working alongside like-minded people to make things a little better’’. My searchings’ so far conclude that this certainly seems to be the top line. If you’re interested then why not take a visit to their hall yourself, you can get a guided tour and ask whatever you like, and then make your own mind up.

A DESIGNER CHRISTMAS!

INVITE

My Christmas started with an Italian themed Christmas tree designed by Dolce& Gabana at Claridges Hotel. Claridges is by far the best hotel in London and one of my all time favorites. The service and manners guests are treated with are second to none. Whether you’re a regular Joe like me or a wealthy Arabian princess I’ve observed all guests are treated with equal grace and a smile. The concierge, who always recharges my phone wit his bank of chargers behind his desk, makes you feel like he is honored to charge your phone. It also helps that they’re based in an area of central London where it’s easy to park.

On pulling up outside the door, I noted that the banks of paparazzi were already gathered and clicking away at VIP guests entering. First came the leggy, willowy lovely Laura Bailey in her red coat and flowing ponytail. Then we had a bevvy of lovely ladies from Pixie Lott to Poppy Delevigne and the ultimate diva-Joan Collins! (It took all my will power not to jump up and down in mutual diva envy when I spotted Joan and recalled my early Dynasty viewing days).

JASMINES JUICE featuring Women In Media, R&B Superstars- The Showtour and UK Youth Parliament.

Women in Media.
wim

A very elite set of leading women, from the world of UK media gathered at the grand stationers hall in St Pauls this week, to debate the experience of ‘WOMEN IN MEDIA’. In association with Huffington Post and the London Evening Standard, leading figures from TV, print and online addressed the role of women in media. After the obligatory glass of wine and female laughter filled reception, around 300 women were seated in anticipation to hear 5 very accomplished panellists speak. Anne McElvoy, very slickly chaired a top-level panel, featuring London Evening Standard editor Sarah Sands, Huffington Post UK editor-in-chief Carla Buzasi, Sky News presenter Kay Burley and The Independent on Sunday editor Lisa Markwell. After our brief welcome by the chairman of the London Press Club Doug Wills, it was straight into hearing the five leaders speak about their adventures, personal anecdotes and confessions.

London Evening Standard Editor Sarah Sands was optimistic about what its like for women in the media, coming from a brand like the Independent group, where there are 2 female editors and 1 non-white editor. Her company clearly, openly and proudly engages in diversity whilst placing the best people in top roles.

She pointed out that women also have a responsibility to other women in the media.

‘’When we see both sexes portrayed in the media- men are for authority, women are for decoration’’

She had us all laughing incredulously as she pointed out 3 stories in a recent copy of the Daily Mail; one about the youngest woman to lead a FTSE company, one about a female serial killer and the last…wait for it…about Fiona Fullerton not wearing any make up! Sarah added ‘’yes women in nice dresses are great for the front page of a paper and solves front-page ‘pretty girl in a skirt’ problems but is it any good for furthering the female agenda?
carla hp
HUFFINGTON POST UK EDITOR CARLA BUZASI WITH JASMINE.

Huffington Post UK Editor-in-Chief Carla Buzasi admitted that she had been lulled into a false sense of security in her early career, when working at numerous female glossy titles like Marie Claire and Cosmo, where there were mainly female bosses and editors. She admitted she was lucky to have continued her ascent, via women empowering her- like her current boss-one of the most famous women in global media-Arianna Huffington. ‘I’ve had lots of big, positive role models’’ she noted.
Carla revealed that a recent survey had shown that in 2012 only 22% of front-page by-lines were by women.

‘‘Just because we see some women at the top doesn’t mean that women are always represented fairly and I feel that responsibility as a female boss, so when we reached out for bloggers at the Huffington post, we championed female bloggers who were often more nervous about being opinionated and judged, by making a conscious effort to ensure we highlighted their bogs on our front pages’’ Carla added as an aside, I am good cos I hire super smart people to my team’’

Carla also revealed her proactive story of how she got her current job whilst she was still at Marie Claire. She had heard that the Huffington Post was going to set up in the UK, and researched and e mailed the boss Arianna, and asked for a meeting. They had a breakfast meeting at Charlotte St Hotel after which Arianna invited Carla to accompany her to a public event where Arianna announced (a surprise to Carla), that Carla was one of her new UK leaders for her brand. proof that not all females are nervous and unconfident at pushing themselves forwards.

The Independent on Sunday editor Lisa Markwell started ‘

’a problem women in media have, is men in media’’

. That really summed up the whole debate. Lisa had us all roaring when she recalled her experience at a dinner party where she had been introduced to group of people as editor of the whole newspaper and was repeatedly asked which ‘female area’’ she edited? Was it the fashion pages? Gossip page? Diary? Food? However she did give a nod to the male in her life when revealing that her own husband gave up work for 5 years to look after their young children and you could clearly hear the audible gasp of disbelief in the room as she told us all this. Lisa was still intrigued by the fact that in many industries (like politics), people were aggressively trying to tap into the female agenda, so why in media was there this huge disconnect with the needs of female readers and the feminist cause?

Sky News presenter Kay Burley was positive about how far our industry had come over the years and just how many more female role models exist now

‘’my world in media is unrecognisable now from when I began many years ago. I like to think that I am employed cos I’m a bloody good journalist, and ask the difficult questions, but when I make a mistake the national press jump on me in a way they don’t with my male peers’’ she told us a well known saying; ‘’doctors bury their mistakes, lawyers cover up their mistakes, journalists broadcast theirs!’’

Kay added to the slaying of certain print press titles, as she showed us the Daily Mirror Saturday feature this week, where alongside a picture of legendary singer Debbie Harry the headline was ‘’no doubt she’s dreaming of her youth’’. Females in media are always judged by their looks. This prompted Kay to openly highlight the fact that she herself has had a face lift, because she ‘’wanted to look as good as she could for as long as she could’’ not bacause she was a public face.
Kay also revealed that at her news brand they are making active changes after realising that one in seven of their every one of their interviewees was female. Now that number has changed to one in three after their commitment to changing that statistic, which is much healthier and diverse. (Wonder if that’s why I was on last month?)

Questions from the audience included a need to know just how much time exactly had each panellist taken off for maternity leave? what did they think about page 3 and the fact that apparently women have been proven to be bigger porn fans than men and more.

For my own selfish needs I would’ve liked to see a female of colour on the panel that was high up in the media world. Someone like Shaminder Nahal who used to edit Newsnight on the BBC and is now a senior editor at Channel 4 News. We do exist-its just we’re not seen.

Our chair Anne McElvoy wrapped the evening up nicely when she said ‘’London is the best place for women in the world, but you’ve got to sell yourself as well as your stories!’’

R&B superstars

The last Bassbuds sponsored R&B Superstars show at Wembley Arena was a great, well organised, a list line up of acts that was 6 months ago. Last weekend they threw another show-this time called ‘’The Show Tour’’ with an R&B Superstars line up that once again had the whole arena partying positively and a great evening.

The Bassbuds VIP lounge backstage saw singers Mario, J Holiday, actor Ashley Walters and rapper Krept pass through.

ASHLEY WALTERS WTH LISA MAFFIA

In the main arena the first act I caught was my line up fave- Sisqo- this guy NEVER does a bad show. He’s always got the vocals and dance routines down to a t and is genuinely the male version of Beyonce but ahead of his time. 3 backing dancers-all track suited from head to toe in red, who accompanied him. Their dance routines and energy was dynamic and had the crowd on their feet throughout as the dragon slayed his performance easily. He really does make it all look so easy singing and dancing with 100% given to both art forms. VOICE Editor Dionne Grant and myself were screaming like a pair of teenagers.
sisqo
JASMINE WITH SISQO.

Mario, J Holiday and Dave Hollister all put in good sets but with a minimum of hits between them the energy wasn’t as high as Sisqos levels but their vocals were still very on point. Donell Jones was dressed head to toe in D&G and had the crowd jumping as he sweat hard through his smoother than cocoa butter set.

GINUWINE AT THE SHOW TOUR BACKSTAGE.

Ginuwine really did pull out all the stops in his white outfit and had us all dancing non stop too. He –for once- had his shade stunners off so we could see his eyes. He got all old skool by grinding the poor stage and then ran a mini marathon around the arena where he serenaded the audience for all he as worth.

MARIO STRIKES A POSE AT THE SHOW TOUR BACKSTAGE.

Kelly Price (who was once Mariah’s backing singer), had vocals that were as strong as an ox. She took her set to church and back again, before the headliner act of the night- Ms Faith Evans smacked the final goal into the back of the net by crooning through her classic hits for a very souled out audience. Another amazing R&B Superstars line up show that brought back real singers and the genre of R&B to the stage in 2013. It did beg the question though…where are our current R&B stars of today? and are any of them British??

Youth parliament

The House of Commons. Home to scandals, broken pledges and petty squabbles between grown men who are out of touch with their community. However, times are changing. Last Friday, the green seats of the House of Commons were not filled with the predominantly white, middle-aged males that we’ve grown accustomed to seeing on television, but instead by a completely different set of people –– the Youth Parliament and my reporter for LONDON360-Iram Sarwar went to check it out.

The Youth Parliament debate, is an initiative run by the British Youth Council with the support of the Government, began in 2009 and has grown substantially in the last five years. The aim of these debates is to choose a campaign that will be the centre point of the UKYP’s manifesto for the next year. Five topics were shortlisted after a public vote in which 478,000 young people from all over the nation took part. These included: ‘Zero tolerance towards bullying in schools’, ‘Combating youth unemployment’, ‘Better work experience and careers advice,’ ‘Votes for 16 and 17 year olds in all public elections ‘‘A curriculum to prepare us for life’ and, last years and this years winning campaign ‘A curriculum to prepare us for life’.
It all looks great on paper, young people getting to debate on what matters to them, young people getting to sit in the House of Commons, young people engaging with politics, but is politics engaging with them? Does anyone (of political significance) actually listen to youth politics? Does it make any difference? As I entered the annual debate,
The Youth Parliament is, as Jamie MacLeod, the Member of Youth Parliament for Scotland (MSYP) says “an opportunity that gives young people a stepping stone to voice their concerns.” While the Youth Parliament might be largely invisible to the majority of the population, they have in just five years managed to engage almost 500,000 young people in politics with the youth elections, managed to get almost 20,000 young people to pledge public support for their campaigns and have received 159 responses from MPs about addressing the views of young people. That’s just in five years. Imagine where they’ll be in ten!

What stood out the most at the debate wad the diversity among the young MPs in age, race and gender? Around 40% of the young politicians were from non-white British backgrounds, contrasting the UK Parliament, which consists of less than 10% of ethnic minorities, and almost half the number of MYPs on the day were female, whereas the real UK Parliament is only 22% female. If this is anything to go by, politics in the UK will have a completely different face.

JASMINES JUICE featuring SOUL II SOUL VIRGIN MUSIC ANNIVERSARY, ARTEM, CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY, ONESNTWOS!

Approaching Christmas is always fun chaos and calamity in the UK and this weeks been no different. At the weekend I was on tourist guide duty as I had a niece over from the USA on her first London trip. As well as the usual hell of having to navigate the London eye and Madam Tussauds we had high tea at Dollys Basement Café in Selfridges- the best and most real and reasonably priced afternoon tea in town. Around £20 each instead of the usual £40 that Harrods and the Ritz charge!

NORDOFF ROBBINS KICK OFF

Sunday I popped to Nordoff Robbins celebrity football match at Crystal Palace where a number of famous men kicked a ball around for our entertainment. On the cold November field were Shane Ritchie, actor Danny Dyer, Former WBO, IBF, WBC and WBA Super Middleweight boxing champion Joe Calzaghe who captained one team and McFly’s Danny Jones will captain the other. They were joined by a plethora of stars including the Weasley twins from the Harry Potter films, Oliver and James Phelps, EastEnders stars Adam Woodyatt (Ian Beale), Jake Wood, (Max Branning) and David Witts (Joey Branning), plus Darren and Mike from The Overtones and Tubes and Franky Fryer from Soccer AM. They all pulled on their shorts for a great cause. Nordoff Robbins delivers music therapy to adults and children with issues like autism, dementia and more and are one of my favourite charities to support.

JASMINE AND JAZZIE- 10 YEARS AGO- NOW CELEBRATING VIRGIN MUSICS ANNIVERSARY.

Tuesday night saw me brave the streets of Camden to attend KOKO for the Soul II Soul concert to celebrate 40 years of Virgin Records. Soul II Soul are British music legends that are known worldwide, have a huge live festival fan base and one of very few UK black music acts that are known to Americans of a certain age. They most certainly would’ve helped put Virgin Music on the map years ago!

On Wednesday I spent a morning at the impressive Google HQ in London and was shown around their very futuristic, fun, playground of an office. At one point Internet inventor Vint Cerf walked past and I was genuinely gobsmacked at being in the presence of greatness.

Next I visited a quiet industrial park in Perivale, west London to see what special effects company ARTEM were up to. Artem have been quietly making huge SFX for TV and Hollywood movies for years and have an annual open day for the local community too. They showed us how they made SFX physically in a very digital world. We experienced gremlins that come alive, daleks that speak, halo characters, wind machines that swept us off our feet, 3D digital printers making feet (don’t ask), giant robots cutting and moulding movie character statues, giant animated foam heads and more! London is full of secret hidden stories of delight! Coincidently, ARTEM made loads of SFX for my next trip, which was to the theatre!
shrek

London’s West End has an abundance of musicals at the theatre, and I have in my time on earth, being a London resident since birth, experienced both of them. Most are great entertainment, a few aren’t worth their exorbitant fee, many are corny and cringe worthy as hell. This week I saw Charlie and the chocolate factory, which was everything a musical experience should be. At the world famous Drury Lane theatre, it is magical even as you approach the grand pillared building lit up with flashbulbs. The foyer sucks you straight into chocolate factory world with dressed up friendly and welcoming chocolate selling girls laden with trolleys full of Wonka bars in assorted flavours. (We bought two bars each and chomped them whilst watching)
CHARLIE_2578887b__130626032842

The interior of the theatre is as ornate and opulent as you’d expect and hope for from an old London venue and the theatre was packed full of excited adults and children anticipating the evening. We were not disappointed.
The curtain rose to reveal a beautiful 3D set that floated and slid on and offstage at intervals. There were so many sets, all stunning and breath taking.
CharlieandtheChocolateFactory_2941

From Charlie’s grandparents under the railway arches poverty struck home, to the gigantic gates of Willy Wonkas factory to the numerous sweetie making workshops- it was all a whirlwind of magic! We all know the story but its beautifully added modern tweaks with characters and music whilst retaining its original style and tone. The production was strong in all areas, from the huge panoramic sound production, to little Charlie and grandpa Joe having us empathising with their every emotion.
CharlieandtheChocolateFactory_2942

But it was the lighting projection and set graphics that created amazing illusions of travelling through whizzing elevators and through buildings that was mesmerizing. At one point a child character blew up onstage and her debris scattered all over us in the form of purple tinsel!
CharlieandtheChocolateFactory_2942

It was Award-winning physical special effects company Artem who I had visited earlier that week, who had been commissioned to provide tailor-made physical special effects for Sam Mendes’ new stage production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Working with Marcus Hall Props, the brief included devising a series of experiments for the Oompa Loompas to carry out in their laboratory, and to design and build an inflatable suit that would transform Violet Beauregarde, the gum-chewing winner of one of Willy Wonka’s golden tickets, into a giant blueberry.

The experiments needed to be visually engaging with bright colours, bubbles, and smoke, but they also had to be contained in a very small area on stage with dancing action around them.
Six different ‘laboratory’ units were built incorporating air and fluid pumps, with lots of tubing and crazily-shaped containers with bubbles floating from one and smoke rising gently from others to replicate the effects of the Oompa Loompas wacky sweet manufacturing experiments.
The inflatable suit was more complicated to create, as it had to fit each of the child actors playing the part of Violet Beauregarde and be self-contained under their outer costumes. It also had to be simple enough for the child actor to operate as well as being safe.
Laura Sindall, an Artem technician, created a couple of alternative designs that were trialed to get the best look. The air supply had to be tiny in order to be hidden, but at the same time had to be capable of ensuring full inflation of the suit. It was decided that diving components with their safety margins and long reliability record provided the ideal solution. Additional safety controls and the use of switching by the child meant the pneumatics could be contained in a small backpack the actor is wearing. Other safety valves ensured the suit could not over inflate and squash the child!

Mike Kelt, CEO of Artem, told us: “It was very amusing when the prototype was first tried out, satisfying for the production and, of course, great fun for the child! The challenge when working on such an iconic childhood favourite is to create something recognisable but at the same time innovative.”
flying lift

I go to the theatre to see shows very regularly and can honestly say this was a magical evening. We were all in awe, the whole audience was buzzing and the visuals effects, sets and sound production was awesome! We were gasping in delight every few minutes- (when we weren’t stuffing our mouths with copious amounts of Wonka bars that we had bought LOL!). It really is a musical on another standard level compared to many west end musicals today. I felt like a child again the visuals that stayed with me were so strong…Willy Wonka and Charlie actually floated in an elevator above my head! The show is booking until November 2014, and it’s suitable for all ages so If you are planning a trip to the theatre with children, as a couple or with tourists I suggest this as the one stop you make an effort to make!

ONESNTWOS ONLINE TV SITCOM

I finished my week by attending an invite only screening for a new online TV show called Ones n Twos which is written by a lady I’ve seen grow and develop in this entertainment industry- Annika Allen and her co writers Ben Peters and Marc Senior. Ones n twos is a modern day sitcom in the same style and tone as well loved TV series like desmonds and the real McCoy.
Actors poster final

The show was released online last week on 14th NOVEMBER 2013. Starring names and faces that you already know and love aswell as new comers like Danny ‘Slim’ Gray, Kat B, Mighty Moe, Axel Comedian, Linden Walcott-Burton Leonie Elliot, Paris Robin, Lenéa Herew, Ava Charles, Monique Fontaine, Michael Moulton, Johnathan Ukeuku and Wakjira Feyesa. Ones n Twos is a unique online comedy series that follows the lives of an eclectic bunch of DJs that broadcast live on pirate radio station OnesNTwos FM – the biggest little station in London. In each episode the DJs broadcast from the stations custom built studio in the station manager’s girlfriends flat. With clashing personalities, secret crushes and power struggles life is never simple for the team at OnesnTwos FM. This series takes the classic sitcom format placing it online for a great mix of humour, drama, comedy and entertainment.
annika
ANNIKA ALLEN, ANGIE LE MAR AND JASMINE.

Annika sat down with me to tell me about how the idea was born ‘We felt that there wasn’t a show on TV that we could relate too or represented black culture in a fun way without focusing on drugs, guns or violence. One half of our directing team Ben Peters came up with the initial concept. He spoke to the other Director Marc Senior about being involved and me to produce it and we kick started the project from there. Coming up with character outlines and a story arc etc.’’. She continued ‘‘we all come from an era where we remember our parents watching Desmonds and we loved The Real McCoy and The Fresh Prince of Belair. We wanted the show to have the comedy elements of these shoes and also a nostalgic feel for that time. Plus we’re all big music lovers. Ben has directed music videos for the likes of Wiley and Example and used to DJ. As a journalist and magazine owner I’ve interviewed some of the biggest music artists and we all have a favourite pirate radio station so we felt this wasn’t an area that had been tackled and it was something we could all relate to’’.
Like most new start up projects Annika explained the hustle that brought the team together ‘’I’ve known Ben for over 10 years and Ben introduced me to Marc. I think individually we all have different skills that we brought to the project that produced great results. For the wider team we pulled in favours and used our network to come on board. each episode is 10 minutes long and will run over 12 weeks every Thursday at 7pm on our YouTube channel @OnesNTwosTV.

Annika also told us it’s a new rules world as Jay Z said ‘’We wanted to create a show that was exactly how we wanted it to be without any outside influences. Plus if we waited on traditional funding or a commission we could still be waiting now. So we decided to do it ourselves in the hope that we can re edit the format to 6 x 30 min episodes for a TX on TV. With Felix Dexter passing, ChoiceFM no more and people from BAME backgrounds leaving the creative industries in their droves, we feel its a good time for a series like this to leave its mark. It features 3 of the best UK comedians, a catchy theme tune by Mighty Moe from the Heartless Crew, who plays Niceness in the series along with an amazing cast of aspiring actors who find it difficult to secure roles and had a great time starring in this series’’.

You can watch the show here on YouTube @OnesNTwosTV …http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kOZ8XGyilMA

With new local London TV station LONDON LIVE starting to broadcast in April next year commissioning young black actor/producer Samuel Benta’s show ‘’all about the McKenzie’s’’, the time to make your mark by going it alone via the internet has never been greater!

JASMINE’S JUICE featuring SKY NEWS, NUTCRACKER ON ICE, BUSTA, RED AND METH, MANDELA THE MOVIE, R&B SUPERSTARS AT WEMBLEY!

Jasmine Sky News 3
JASMINE ON SKY NEWS.

SKY NEWS

Got to love the last.min.com way of the media industry. I got a call on my day off my from a producer at Sky News- who asked if id be willing to come in a talk about that evenings Mercury Music Prize. I jumped in a cab an hour later to go chat to news anchor Dermot Murnaghan about it. The Mercury Prize is one of the most respected music awards in the UK. Unlike many others it doesn’t leave the music industry scoffing. It is diverse and represents all ages, classes, genres, sexes and styles of music. You can be as old as David Bowie this year-66, or as young as Laura Marling -23. Annually a variety of music genres are shortlisted for the prize and it’s always had a healthy sprinkling of urban acts from Dizzee Rascal, Ms Dynamite and Speech Debelle. When Dizzee and Dynamite won it we understood, when speech won both peeps from inside and outside the urban music genre were left scratching their chins. Not cos she’s not good- but it just wasn’t her time. Like a dinner with all the right ingredients she just hadn’t cooked through enough and wasn’t ready to receive such an accolade. After all eyes were on her she had nowhere left to go.
Jasmine Sky News 4

This year, as usual there wasn’t anything controversial critics could criticise about the category so some said the shortlist was too mainstream. This was laughable. Many in the music industry may have heard of the acts but outside of it barely any knew the whole list. My taxi driver en route had heard of 4 out of the 12. (Also, the prize has for the past 22 years been £20,000. Surely considering inflation and time this should be higher in 2013?) Actually it’s not even the first place spot that counts. Others on the list can make this money up merely by being nominated. in the year that Plan B was nominated he sold an extra 43,000 copies of his album, and this year Laura Mvulas manager told me since her nomination her album sales had gone up 500%! So it’s a well-respected award shortlist that artists and their teams love. Music teams are given a nod of acknowledgement that all their hard work isn’t going unnoticed, and the artist winner or not, gets to call themselves a mercury artist for ever. A great deal. We had a good chat about it on air and all was well. But there’s always one thing that goes wrong isn’t there? This time it wasn’t me. Dermot’s Autocue clearly said ‘’Jasmine Dotiwala’’ and of course he said ‘’Yasmin’’- twice!. Good to know even the really big pro’s make errors too.

NUTCRACKER ON ICE.

I visited the London Palladium to see the Nutcracker On Ice. This is a ballet that I took part in annually at my ballet school, and is the most fun, easy ballet story to follow so I took my other half too. He’s always been a theatre fan but I’ve never really been able to excite him with ballet. ‘’I don’t need to see dudes in tights babe’’.
nc
This story of a young girl called Clara and her families Christmas party is mesmerising at the best of times. Drosselmeyer, a local councilman, magician, and Clara’s godfather brings a gift of a nutcracker for Clara. As the clock strikes midnight and the party draws to a close, Clara falls asleep and the nutcracker gift appears as a real life size person in her dream that carries her to far lands of different ethnicities (Russian, Arabic, Chinese, Spanish) and worlds of magical sweet kingdoms. In point shoes and tutus’ this is a visual spectacle but on ice its even more magical and dreamlike with its floating, soaring skaters who interpreted the story beautifully.

The poster advertising nutcracker on ice features old stage and TV stalwart Keith Chegwin but don’t let that put you off, he’s barely in it. Instead try your utmost to get to one of its nationwide tour dates if you can. The show plays Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff from Fri 8 – Sun 17 November and the Mayflower Theatre, Southampton from Tue 19 – Sat 23 November. You wont regret it.

BUSTA RHYMES, REDMAN AND METHODMAN AT HAMMERSMITH APOLLO.
Busta, Meth & Redman
REDMAN AND METHODMAN AT HAMMERSMITH APOLLO- PIC Paul Hampartsoumian

The superstars of hip-hop show at Hammersmith Apollo, was a hotly anticipated gig that didn’t disappoint and luckily my music world connect Hakeem Stevens (CHOICEFM/ VP RECORDS/ USM MEDIA GROUP/ LOADS OF MUSIC LABELS LOL!), hooked a girl up with some last minute tickets. On arrival there was an ever growing, Heaving crowd outside with both tickets and guest list queue massive. Inside eve before the main show the venue was three quarters full already. The first thing I saw was Birmingham’s Lady Leshur who was mid set and had a great audience rapport and response. When you think that back in the day when Busta and peers used to first come and performing the UK, the UK warm up acts usually performed to a tiny crowd who didn’t much care about them this is a great progression. The crowd were positively jumping and cheering for Lady Leshur.

RED METH
JASMINE WITH REDMAN AND METHODMAN MID INTERVIEW IN THE OLD DAYS- THERE WERE 2 MASSIVE SPLIFFS BEHIND THIS SOFA THAT SHOWED UP WHEN THE CAMERA WASNT ROLLING!

Next Radio1Xtras DJ Ace warmed up the crowd nicely before Red and Meth came on. This was interesting, as I had wondered which act would headline. Busta is good but Red and Meth have a crazy funny magic performing together. Red and meth have had so many years performing together their stage set is tight and slick. They even had hype dance moves and unison routines.

JAS METH RED 3
JASMINE WITH RED AND METH IN THE OLD DAYS

Both big, tall and bounding across the stage together with dynamic energy, they had themselves and the crowd high from the moment they stepped onstage until their last bow. Their lyrical flow was as strong with clarity as if we were listening to their records, their passion and charisma talking and involving the crowd in a natural manner was slick and authentic. it made me acknowledge that acts that are half their age don’t have their stage experience or crowd reaction. They deserve a full 10/10 for their set….but…they did mess up timing for the whole show by turning up at the venue at 830 when they were due to be on stage and didn’t make their way straight on stage until 9.20 putting everything behind schedule so the UK acts had to fill in. They were drinking and smoking weed (nothing new there) and Busta was in the venue at 8.50pm as he wanted to see Red and Meth’s set and half way through came down to watch it from the side of the stage.

Busta, Meth & Redman
BUSTA RHYMES AT HAMMERSMITH APOLLO- PIC Paul Hampartsoumian

Everyone knows the venue time curfew is 11pm but by 10.20pm Busta still hadn’t appeared nor was there any sign of him due to Red and Meth’s antics. I know from past experience that Busta can put on a really, tight, slick live set with his cohort Spilff Star and it runs a good hour. (Yes, sad what I pick up over the years following acts around on tour making TV specials about them)So it was a domino effect and Busta Rhymes was late onstage, seemingly unrehearsed and without his usual sidekick Spliff Star, the set was flatter than should be and lacked the usual tight rehearsed lines and intro into each song.

He performed all of his hits and did a 50 minute set in the end. If he had to rush through stuff, the blame lies with Red and Meth who were (apparently) unprofessional from the time they came off the plane.

My own personal gripe was that half way through his set he spent a 10 good minutes of his set paying tribute to legendary hip-hop producer J Dilla and then told the audience’ ‘if you don’t know who f#*@ J Dilla is then go and do your f&*^^%& homework!!!’’. Now I have no time for music snobs. I found this rant totally offensive rude and unnecessary. Did he ever think that these younger or more uninformed hip-hop fans all come to love hip-hop via a different path? We all access our love for art via a million different routes. Some people are deep fans that know an artists back catalogue inside out, others come to music via their hobbies of dance, friends, radio and more. Having spoken to many of my live show promoter mates I know that these more ‘’uninformed fans’’ are the ones that attend gigs loyally and pay for their tickets unlike a lot of hip-hop heads (like me) who often probably came to gigs via the guest list and promoter comps. The fans Busta was dissing very likely actually paid full price for their tickets. These fans are lining your pockets and keeping your bills paid. How about educing them with ‘’if you don’t know who J Dilla is he was a very ground breaking, prominent respected music producer and I’d urge you to go check him out’’

Music snobs get short thrift from me. Who are you to judge what makes a better, bigger hip-hop fan? Why should an older, wiser more informed fan make others feel awkward because they don’t know who J Dilla is? How about nicely educating them instead of alienating? It’s like music snobs that get pissed off when new fans stand at the front of a rappers show citing’’ I was a fan before them, they don’t know what hip-hop is, how dare they stand at the front!’’ WTF? We spent years trying to make our genre of music big and commercial and now that it is you wanna bite the hand that feeds you for not knowing enough? As an American would say- sheesh!
Busta finished by rolling fast through a few hits but i think we all knew it was a fast fix rescue set (blame it on the high duo) as opposed to his usual awesome set.

JASMINE WITH OLD MATE IDRIS ELBA.

MANDELA- A LONG WALK TO FREEDOM MOVIE

Finally I attended a special screening of the new Mandela movie- a long walk to freedom. An amazingly powerful screen story about the great man, played by our very own Idris Elba, who in my humble opinion did a brilliant job. Idris South African accent is most certainly better than his American accent. He spent 5 hours a day in face make up to transform his face shape and appearance to become Madeba and looked the part. Its only when you see close ups of Idris eyes that you can see the power of his individual brand. His co star Naomi Harris who played his wife Winnie Mandela was as powerful and had us empathising with her every step of her own personal journey too. Both of their intertwined stories against the backdrop of apartheid in South Africa had the audience in tears and sobs were heard throughout the film. I personally found the story of Mandela’s close ANC comrades most fascinating. Amongst the tight male group of 5 was an African Asian man who did time with Nelson and fought alongside the black struggle. It made me realise that we brown and black skinned brothers and sisters have been closely knit throughout history. The film is out in the UK in January and it’s an all time classic. Surely Idris and Naomi will both get Oscars for this!

R&B SUPERSTARS COMING TO WEMBLEY ARENA NOVEMBER 16TH 2013!

Now time to prepare for the biggest R&B show this side of Christmas! The superstars of R&B Wembley Arena show featuring Faith Evans, Sisqo, Donnel Jones, Mario, Dave Hollister, Kelly Price, Bobby V, J Holiday, Ginuwine, Adina Howard and Chico Debarge. The last one was a great day out for the whole family, well organised and well worth it.
I jumped on the phone quickly with some of the acts. Sisqo told me: “last time Jas I came with my Dru Hill family, but this time its the solo stuff, it’s the stuff you wanted to see, Know you can never ever expect what the Dragons gonna do.” Faith Evans gushed in that sultry velvet like voice: “I’m gonna be putting down some good old skool R&B, make sure you’re in the house.”
J. Holiday added: “This a show you don’t wanna miss- see you all there.” (What he said!).
